    Venable Fried Chicken
    Kristine N.

Ordered the fried chicken topped with arugula and a side of whipped potatoes--chicken cutlet was crispy, arugula was topped with a handful of parmesan, and potatoes were smooth and creamy. Food was served quickly, but the flavor profile seemed one-dimensional. Restaurant seemed adequately staffed, and servers were friendly.

    The scallop special
    Christine F.

Made reservations for dinner , since we know it can be super busy . We were seated promptly, given menus and water. The restaurant was partially full at 6:30. Our server read us the specials and offered other drinks besides water. The scallop special sounded divine ; blackened scallops over coconut curry butternut squash with brussels sprouts, finished with a balsamic drizzle topped with frisée greens. The orecchiette pasta with broccoli rabe pesto, fennel sausage, chili flake with shrimp on top. Were the two dinners that we ordered. While we waited we ordered bread and butter. It can be a loud restaurant, no acoustic panels to help the noise level. There are some neat pictures on the walls to look at while you wait for dinner. The bread was hot and crusty- delicious. Our dinners came out . The scallops looked amazing so did the pasta dish. The scallops were cooked perfectly, a nice sear on them , wonderful flavor and no gritty sand to be found. The coconut curry butternut squash had plenty of spice , but not overpowering . The brussels sprouts were tender but needed a touch of flavor , they were a little bland by themselves. The frisée was an interesting component to the dish . The orecchiette pasta was cooked nicely , the shrimp added a nice taste . It was not overly garlicky at all. It was two delicious dinners. The restaurant started to fill up and the servers were very busy. It took a while for the server to check back with us . A second glass of wine took a long time to get but it eventually arrived. It would have gotten 5 stars if the attentiveness was present by the waitstaff. All in all I would go back again.

Venable is consistently perfection! The atmosphere is wonderful, every dish is phenomenal, and the service is top level. You can't miss! Elle, Jake, and Michael are especially great servers! Jake remembered us (and our order!) from a couple of months prior, and makes every visit special! Just awesome!

    NOT THIS!!

SO, I ordered the fried chicken. INEDIBLE flattened piece of dry white meat chicken covered with tasteless batter..ONE tiny teeny bone on the whole thing. I took two bites and the rest was ingested by my dog, Awful and perhaps the menu could have specified what to expect..see photo.

    Chevre Salad... delicious
    Christy J.

My friend brought me to this place for lunch. The ambiance was super cute and appealing. The server was extremely kind and helpful and attended to us a few times. The food and wine both were delicious. I wanted to eat light so I had the Chevre salad and she had the Venable Fried Chicken. I would have gotten what she had since it looked delicious, but I'll save it for next time.

I had a lovely brunch here with a couple of friends. We sat in window seat which was a bit warm on a bright and sunny day. We shared the croissant plate, light and fluffy pastries with an assortment of jams and butter. Delish! I had a build my own breakfast with eggs, grits and biscuit. My niece and a friend had the tofu chaat salad and said it was delicious. And my bestie had the pork stew. Everyone enjoyed their food and I also very much enjoyed my jubilee beverage. The space is light and airy. The service was great with waters refilled quickly.

The space has a slightly dim, intimate feel with dark red walls and thoughtful details--even the plates feel intentional. The food is the real star. We had the tasting menu, and everything was absolutely delectable, aside from the duck (purely personal preference). I sincerely appreciate the choice of vegetarian, vegan, or omnivore options for the tasting menu -- that's quite special. You somewhat go in blind as to what you'll be served, which I really appreciate. For the omnivore tasting menu, there was a lot of seafood used, which I loved. The ingredients were married together well in each item. The price felt well worth it for the experience. They also offer a wine pairing for those interested. I'll definitely be coming back. And despite being in Chapel Hill, it has ample parking that makes it easy to access.

The space is modern and elegant but still cozy, with soft lighting, subtle earth tones, and an open layout that balances intimacy and energy. Service was outstanding from start to finish, attentive, informed, and genuinely enthusiastic about the menu. Let's get into the food, because this was one of the most exciting and consistently excellent meals we've had in a long time. We started with They Might Be Tostones, a clever and beautifully layered dish with Murasaki sweet potato, lime-pimentón crema, and chili crisp. It was punchy, bright, and balanced. The Warm Rustic Baguette with whipped butter and sea salt may seem simple, but it was divine, crusty on the outside, soft on the inside, and perfect for lingering. Dirt Candy, a medley of seasonal vegetables with toasted pistachio ail lade, was vibrant and thoughtfully composed. The Big Eye Tuna Carpaccio with red miso-citrus bagna cauda and delicate shoots was fresh and refined, with a perfect acidity and richness. We moved on to heartier plates like the Ricotta Gnocchi with Italian sausage, peppers, whipped ricotta, broccoli rabe, and chili flake. The gnocchi were pillowy and deeply flavorful. The Kabocha Squash & Farro with lump crab, pancetta, and miso butter was savory, slightly sweet, and full of texture. The Pan Roast with flounder, mussels, fregula, and smoky shellfish sugo was bold and briny, with layers of flavor in every bite. Two pasta dishes also stood out, the Ravioli di Manzo with Barolo-braised beef and Parmigiano was rich and comforting, while the Plin Piemontese, filled with pasture-raised pork and finished in crema di parmigiano, was elegant and silky. For dessert, we shared all three options and each one brought something different. The Citrus plate with steamed lemon pudding and lemon curd was light, tart, and texturally playful. The Cheesecake with maple mascarpone and cranberry compote was creamy, nutty, and not overly sweet. But the star was the Chocolate Fondant, extra dark, gooey, with salted caramel gelato and hazelnut crumble. An absolutely unforgettable finish. OakLeaf is a standout. Every dish felt thoughtful, seasonal, and beautifully executed. We will absolutely be back.

Our server was very friendly and knowledgeable and gave us a rundown of the menu before we ordered. I decided to start with the Cheese Plate, which included 3 different cheeses, buttered baguette slices, jam, mustard, and pickles. I enjoy cheese plates, and this one was great, but I can understand it may not be for everyone. My wife ordered the Red Fish, which had a more Southeast Asian-inspired twist to it. It came over rice and pickled onions and beets, and the flavors were a blend of lemongrass and coconut. The fish was cooked well - nice and tender, not too dry - and the flavors went well together. I ordered the New York Strip, which was delicious - the meat was well cooked, had great flavor, and was a generous portion that was very filling. The only gripe I had was that the char on the eggplant overwhelmed the flavor, so most of what I ate tasted like burnt eggplant. The place is clean and fairly laid back for a more upscale restaurant. If you're looking for a nicer restaurant in Chapel Hill where you might spend a little more, but you'll get great service with interesting food options / combinations, then look no further than Hawthorne & Wood.

Service was great, and I was impressed that the staff remembered a food allergy in our party. We started with the cheese board--quality ingredients, though I prefer sliced cheeses and flatbread for easier sharing. The jam was a standout! My short rib entree was savory, with tender (but not fall-off-the-bone) meat, paired nicely with roasted eggplant, green chickpeas, and a touch of sweetness from the pomegranate jus. The eggplant was more charred than I prefer, but the flavors worked well overall. Cocktails were well-made, portions satisfying, and while entrées are on the pricier side, you leave full and happy.

My husband and I went on a late Saturday afternoon and we were seated immediately. We shared the Fido's Fries as an appetizer and I got the Chili Cheese Dogs as my entree. Almost everything could be made veggie or vegan so I asked for the dogs to be veggie. My meal also came with a side so I got the frickles (fried pickles). The Fido's Fries were beer battered fries, topped with cheese, bacon (we got the pork option but they have soy), scallions, & sour cream (on the side). The fries were absolutely delicious! I loved my chili cheese dogs as well. It was a very generous portion because it was two dogs and a ton of frickles. As a dog lover, I adored all of the dog art & statues around the place. The menu is even dog themed. I mean they call appetizers kibbles & bits. That could not be any cuter! There is indoor seating (with a bar) and outdoor seating. As you can probably already tell, the restaurant is dog friendly (with their outdoor area). They even have a dog friendly menu (called puppy meals). Service was superb! There is no dedicated parking lot but we easily found free parking a few blocks away. My mom is a vegan and we sometimes struggles to find creative meals when she visits. It's just silly It was cool to check out some of the downstairs area of the hotel but I wouldn't be back anytime soon unless for an event or another gathering. I will say everything that I got from the drinks to the shared appetizer of pistachio feta(?) and pita was good.
