Oakleaf took me by surprise. I'm not usually someone who goes for New American, but this farm-to-table restaurant completely won me over. It's perfect for a special night out. The space has a slightly dim, intimate feel with dark red walls and thoughtful details--even the plates feel intentional. The food is the real star. We had the tasting menu, and everything was absolutely delectable, aside from the duck (purely personal preference). I sincerely appreciate the choice of vegetarian, vegan, or omnivore options for the tasting menu -- that's quite special. You somewhat go in blind as to what you'll be served, which I really appreciate. For the omnivore tasting menu, there was a lot of seafood used, which I loved. The ingredients were married together well in each item. The price felt well worth it for the experience. They also offer a wine pairing for those interested. I'll definitely be coming back. OakLeaf in Carrboro is one of those rare spots that immediately feels special. From the moment you walk in, you're greeted with warmth, both in ambiance and hospitality. The space is modern and elegant but still cozy, with soft lighting, subtle earth tones, and an open layout that balances intimacy and energy. Service was outstanding from start to finish, attentive, informed, and genuinely enthusiastic about the menu. Let's get into the food, because this was one of the most exciting and consistently excellent meals we've had in a long time. We started with They Might Be Tostones, a clever and beautifully layered dish with Murasaki sweet potato, lime-pimentón crema, and chili crisp. It was punchy, bright, and balanced. The Warm Rustic Baguette with whipped butter and sea salt may seem simple, but it was divine, crusty on the outside, soft on the inside, and perfect for lingering. Dirt Candy, a medley of seasonal vegetables with toasted pistachio ail lade, was vibrant and thoughtfully composed. The Big Eye Tuna Carpaccio with red miso-citrus bagna cauda and delicate shoots was fresh and refined, with a perfect acidity and richness. We moved on to heartier plates like the Ricotta Gnocchi with Italian sausage, peppers, whipped ricotta, broccoli rabe, and chili flake. The gnocchi were pillowy and deeply flavorful. The Kabocha Squash & Farro with lump crab, pancetta, and miso butter was savory, slightly sweet, and full of texture. The Pan Roast with flounder, mussels, fregula, and smoky shellfish sugo was bold and briny, with layers of flavor in every bite. Two pasta dishes also stood out, the Ravioli di Manzo with Barolo-braised beef and Parmigiano was rich and comforting, while the Plin Piemontese, filled with pasture-raised pork and finished in crema di parmigiano, was elegant and silky. For dessert, we shared all three options and each one brought something different. The Citrus plate with steamed lemon pudding and lemon curd was light, tart, and texturally playful. The Cheesecake with maple mascarpone and cranberry compote was creamy, nutty, and not overly sweet. But the star was the Chocolate Fondant, extra dark, gooey, with salted caramel gelato and hazelnut crumble. An absolutely unforgettable finish. OakLeaf is a standout. Oakleaf is a farm-to-table, New American restaurant that delivers on creative dishes that highlight seasonal ingredients! It's also the first spot I've been to in Carrboro. Five of us shared these starters: - Kabocha Squash and Farro (roasted fennel, lump crab, pancetta, red miso butter): Absolutely delicious. Loved the diversity of textures- creamy farro, crispy pancetta, well-cooked squash. The crab did get a bit lost in the dish though. - They Might Be Tostones (murasaki sweet potato, lime-pimenton crema, chili crisp): My favorite! The crema was amazing with the perfect amount of spice and paired so well with the sweet potato. Could be interesting for the sweet potato to be a little crispier. - Big Eye Tuna (in the style of carpaccio, red miso-citrus bagna cauda, shoots): I'm not a huge raw fish girlie, but this was very fresh. - Warm Rustic Baguette (whipped butter, sea salt): Sleeper hit; the baguette had a perfectly crunchy outside and pillowy inside. The butter was almost airy, so good. - Dirt Candy (toasted pistachio aillade): Wish I could cook my veggies this well... The aillade was packed with nutty, garlicky flavor. I also got the: - Applebottom Jeans (bourbon, aperol, ginger, Eric Bordelet apple cider): Was recommended this when I asked for their sweetest libation. Admittedly, I was nervous about the bourbon: while there was a kick, it wasn't overwhelming and the cider was a great balancing ingredient. - Ravioli di Manzo (barolo braised beef shoulder, parmigiano-reggiano): Honestly, the sauce was too salty for me probably since it's parmesan-based but decent pasta overall. And I tried my friends': - Ricotta Gnocchi (Italian sausage, corno di toro peppers, whipped ricotta, broccoli rabe, chile flake): Loved all the textures and the bouncy gnocchi. - Plin Piemontese (pastured raised pork raviolini, crema di parmigiano): The creaminess balanced the saltiness from the parmesan well. Of course, can't forget dessert (they all hit): - Citrus (steamed lemon pudding, confit lemon, lemon curd, crunchy bits): Surprisingly, this was my favorite! Texture was more reminiscent of a cheesecake than a pudding which I think leveled the tartness well. - Cheesecake (maple-mascarpone cheesecake, nutty shortbread, cranberry compote): Texture of this was more like a pudding than a cheesecake lol, but I liked the subtle maple flavor contrasted with the cranberry. - Chocolate (extra dark chocolate fondant, salted caramel gelato, hazelnut, crumble): So fudgy, very dense which I wasn't expecting but ended up liking, perfectly complementary gelato, a delight. We had a couples dinner at Oakleaf and had a pretty good time. The wine was good, the food was 4/5, and the service was okay (a bit punchy, but knowledgeable otherwise). The atmosphere at Oakleaf is swanky, and the restaurant was full by the time we left. We ended up spending a little under $200 for 2 people (after tax and tip), and we didn't order anything crazy or dessert. I personally felt like we overpaid for what we got, but it was still a good experience. Parking on a Friday night was near impossible, but there's a nice free parking deck a short walk away. Honestly, it'll probably be a few years before we go back, but it's worth a try if you've never been before. read more

Mussels were typical French style with a nice tranche of bread and excellent marnière sauce. Mussels were very fresh. The tile fish was amazing. The truffle sauce alone was fantastic. The fish was cooked to perfection, flaky with a nice crust. Highly recommend. We ended with the chocolate fig walnut cake. This was a culinary miracle. I was expecting something along the lines of sticky toffee pudding. Not even close. The cake was incredibly light and airy, unbelievably moist and soft. Honestly I have no idea how this is possible based on the ingredients. This would have definitely gotten a Paul Hollywood handshake. Had a great dinner at Oakland last night. Sat at the bar and enjoyed the conversation with Dave the bartender. For an appetizer we had the burrata and it was great, probably better for one person vs splitting it. The fresh peaches, pine nuts and mint really mixed well together. The caramelized duck was fantastic. The pappardelle with bolognese was very good. The portion size was great for us and left room for dessert. First time diners here. Started off with a few apps, which set the bar high for the entrees. Tried the Full Cheese Treatment, a delectable assortment of charcuterie, spreads, olives and nuts. Also had the arugula with melon, baby gem Caesar and fresh, warm focaccia. All outstanding, which we demolished. Moved onto the entrees and had the Pappardelle, agnolotti, flounder and duck breast. The pastas were delicious , however made with non-tomato ragus and kind of mono-chromatic,. The duck was tender with stone fruit, and flounder light, just seemed to be lacking a savory element. This is our favorite restaurants in the area. It is absolutely fantastic and a great date night. We are only in the area a few times a year to visit family, but we always make it a point to come here for dinner. We love doing the chef's spontaneous tasting menu with the wine pairing. It's always worth it with a great variety of dishes with wines that pair nicely. It's tough to make recommendations since the menu changes pretty often, but we've loved everything we've ordered and we really enjoying trying new things on the menu. We also love the farm to table concept and the wine selection. Service is always great. They're very friendly, knowledgable and attentive. I recommend making a reservation. It's an intimate restaurant and they get pretty busy, especially on the weekends. Great farm to table restaurant in all aspects. While I didn't drink, it was hard to resist my wife's cocktail which looked great. My starter, tuna carpaccio was incredible. A good sized portion of tuna, very fresh fish with magnificent flavours, one of the most complex carpaccio/tartares I ever had. The duck breast as a main was also excellent, nice flavours and a very hearty portion of duck. The vegetable side (I think it was called Ground Candy) was also great, lots of interesting and fresh vegetables, with a ton of great flavours. The restaurant provides a casual elegant dinner atmosphere. This is a farm to table restaurant and so the menu can vary and overall the portions were not very large, but all very flavorful. My wife and I started with the brocollini and autumn greens. The brocollini was smaller than the autumn greens but we felt it was more unique and flavorful. For our mains we chose the tagliatelle and caramelized duck. Both were outstanding with the pasta dish being slightly smaller than the caramelized duck. For dessert, we tried the apple crumble with ice cream which was the perfect combination of warmth and sweet on a cold day. The service was fast, but the restaurant wasn't very busy that night. Employees know this, hear complaints constantly but do nothing, giving lame excuses like "we put carpets under the tables". That's NOT where the noise is coming from. ELEMENTARY remedy is to reduce the bareness of concrete and metal surfaces by increasing fiber, adding cloth hangings from ceiling, which is not expensive, but it seems it would take an audiologist to think of it and to follow through. Ignorance and laziness reign. The good aspects do not in any way compensate for the customer's inability to HEAR the people with whom s/he is dining. read more

I was a little worried when I emailed for a reservation and they never responded to confirm which required me to call and reach out and make sure they had it in their books. They asked if there was a special occasion and I mentioned it was my birthday. I'm not sure why they asked since it doesn't affect anything. We were greeted by a somewhat sour hostess with short hair who barely said two words to us. Then we sat there for 15 minutes before anyone came over to greet us or give us water. The waiter was very amiable though and it looked like only two waiters working the entire restaurant, inside and out so I don't blame him at all but I wondered after the handling the reservation, the aloofness of the hostess on top of feeling forgotten that I had made the wrong choice. He definitely saved the experience for us. I didn't see a cocktail that I thought I would enjoy but the bartender made me an excellent margarita. Not too sweet and the Sauza tequila was smooth and clean. They left a carafe of water on the table which I always appreciate so we didn't have to keep asking for refills. We started with appetizers, two salads and the scallops. I absolutely loved the spring greens with crunchy quinoa and goat buttermilk ranch! It was seriously the highlight of the meal and it's rare a salad can take that place. The little gem Caesar salad was so-so like most tend to be. I'm told the scallops were good though I don't eat seafood. The entrees we got were all pasta since two of us don't eat meat. It was disappointing to not have an alternative non meat dish because vegetarians tend to get tired of being pacified with heavy pasta dishes. I will say, at least they showed effort by offering stuffed pasta which takes skill and care so that part was nice. I got the herb & ricotta agnolotti, spring peas, burro fuso, black truffle cheese dish and it was decent. The peas really livened it up and made it lighter but I got tired of it after awhile. The roasted leek & mushroom ravioli, crema di mascarpone, cracked peppercorn sounded like it would be delicious but it was my least favorite. The filling wasn't very flavorful. The best dish was the ricotta gnocchi, piennolo di vesuvio tomato, roasted li'l zucchinis, parmigiano-reggiano. This was absolutely delicious and something I'd order again. What made this a four star rather than 3 star is the polenta. Such a humble dish, but it can't be missed. We ordered it for the table and it along with the salad would be a good meal in and of itself. That is a hug in a bowl. Get it. Unfortunately the desserts didn't knock my socks off. We each ordered one of the three and shared them. The cheesecake was cheesecake, pretty safe if that's your calling. They had a citrusy kind of flan which was probably the best though the glaze was a little overpowering for me. The chocolate cake was very rich and honestly should satisfy any chocoholic. The seating here is very good for fine dining. You actually get more than a small wedge of a table where you can actually get comfortable on the nice cushion bench wall. Nice to have room to fit all the dishes and not feel claustrophobic. It's pretty dark in there and I saw people using their flashlights on their phones to read the menu. It was also pretty stuffy considering the open space of the restaurant. It was a nice dinner but no reason for me to go back unless they have a vegetarian dish that isn't pasta but people with more dietary discretion should be fine. read more

All the culinary skill that made the Pittsboro location such a winner has made it to the new Carrboro location. The food was amazing and the decor is different but still appealing. They're still working out the pacing, but I'm sure that will come in time. The house-made tagliatelle with pork ragout was delicious--the pasta even had flavor; it wasn't just a vehicle to hold sauce. The duck breast was rich and tender. The scallops came perfectly caramelized on a bed of farro with a shellfish jus that tasted like the stock for some delightfully rich seafood bisque. At $31, maybe it could have had four scallops instead of three, but the farro helped to be filling. There are tons of appetizer choices, but only four main course options. But we sampled 50% of those and they were both winners. Only three dessert options other than the cheese plate and none of them really seemed appealing to me, but I'm not that big on sweets. Opted for the cheese and it was nice, especially the extra-funky bleu. The pauses between courses seemed a little longish to me, so they're probably still working out timing and that will come in time. The service was highly knowledgeable, but they could maybe back off just a touch on over-explaining the wine pairings. They could also stand to expand their alcohol range a bit--no citrus vodkas. The space is different from the rustic-industrial design in Carrboro, but no less appealing. The rich blue walls with gold-framed circular mirrors felt like some fashionable Parisian salon found its way to a multi-use building in Carrboro. But it's still very comfortable and not stuffy at all. I'll definitely be going back, as I'm sure the items will rotate frequently and I want to see what the chef comes up with next. One other request: it would be nice if they would join OpenTable so you don't have to email a reservation request and wait for a response. read more

What a fabulous find. The restaurant has a strange reservation system where you need to email them to get a reservation. Having said that the food is absolutely worth it. We tried two cocktails. I enjoyed them but found the balance slightly off with too much vermouth in "no sleep till Brooklyn". The lil biscuits were a flavor bomb and such a great way to start our meal. The earthy of the truffles balanced nicely with the saltiness of the ham with the buttery biscuit. The chilled shrimp had a nice spice and we enjoyed the sweet fresh corn. Small portion size for big price. I'm visiting from CA for a work conference and ended up here. I came during dinner time and the place seemed empty. The ambiance was alright-clean, modern designs. I would come here for a date spot or some drinks with the girls. I order the yellowtail carpaccio as an appetizer. The greens they put on top overpowered the fish. I eventually stripped away all the garnishes and was able to actually taste the tuna. I liked how it wasn't cut too thin but the portion was small, definitely not enough to share, but luckily I came alone. For my main course, I order the half size pasta dish of which the name I cannot remember. It was okay, nothing to wow about. But what was irritating almost comical was the portion size. It looked like it belonged on the kids menu. I finished the whole darn thing in two bites! Yes two moderate sized bites! It's not enough. It was $14 for such a microscopic portion. First time at Oakleaf after hearing good reviews from different sources. It's located not too far from UNC campus in a shopping center. As you approach the restaurant, parking is shared by the other eateries. Keep an eye on the parking spaces because some say 15 mins and others say 75 mins. Can't confirm how strictly those are monitored. I made reservations for 4 adults and 3 children for Mother's Day Brunch. To my understanding this is the only time they offer brunch. They have 4 dining area. The bar section directly in front when you enter, a private room past the bar, main indoor sitting to the left of entrance and past the main is outdoor patio. We chose outdoor to enjoy the weather. Some tables had umbrellas and some did not. The first thing I want to point out is the front hostess could have been more professional. There was a young man that saw us approach and warmly greeted us as he opened the door. The warmth stopped there when we met the hostess. Our server on the other hand made up for that encounter and was wonderful. He was well mannered, uniform clean, and knew the menu without hesitation. The food. I can't speak for lunches or dinners but the brunch menu was sparse. Our party didn't particularly have any issues finding something to eat on it but I can see if there are picky eaters this place may not be their cup of tea. What we ordered was plated nicely and delicious. Their salad was fresh and not overly dressed. The pancakes was the highlight and I would've ordered that if I was full from the French toast. Brought a really close friend here for her 80th birthday. All in all, place is a great for special occasions. From reading some of my other reviews, you'll know my thoughts on free desserts for birthdays and such and you don't get that here. She did get a birthday candle in her cake. That was...nice.... Handmade pasta really propels a dish and the fresh Ricotta Gnocchi was very nice, but the ragu bolognese was a little too...peppery? Steak was cooked to perfection, but left a lot to be desired. The full cheese board is something I highly recommend everyone getting, especially if your company has never gotten it before (our case.) Add the honey, add everything-really worth the experience. Dessert was a little different. Perhaps too fancy for southern preferences? Brown sugar tart was too hard; chocolate cake a little too...deconstructed for the birthday girl. Went to lunch at the Carrboro location for the first time after dozens of visits to the Pittsboro location over the years. Didn't really like the parking situation and the space was fairly pedestrian design-wise (not surprising considering it's in a new building in Carrboro. Most of the wait staff seems to have turned over too which is a bit saddening but our server today was fantastic. Overall the food was just as good as it was in Pittsboro. It seems like they've moved from a daily menu to a monthly menu which is sort of a bummer but there was more on the menu than before so that's a plus I suppose. Started with the charred broccolini with romesco which was good enough if a bit one-note. My wife got the polenta side dish as a starter and enjoyed it even though it was woefully under seasoned. Whereas the starters were pretty forgettable the main dishes were superb. My wife got the trout with hazelnuts and it was as good as the 10-12 times we tried it at the old location. It's not my favorite preparation they have of that trout but it's still delicious. For my main I got the black mussels with saffron jus and cauliflower. The mussels were cooked perfectly and the serving was huge. The saffron and cauliflower flavors complimented the mussels perfectly. For dessert we had the chocolate cake with chocolate crumble, ganache and malted milk ice cream -- it was as good as the similar dessert we had at the old location.
