My husband and I stayed at Lookout Mountain Lodge over the 4th of July. We've stayed here several years ago when it was Crow Peak Lodge. I was not aware of the past issues or reviews, we just needed a place to rest. My experience was decent enough to stay there again. I was tempted to reserve online but intuition kicked in and I called instead. And I'm very glad I did, when making my reservation I explained we are traveling late and would be able check in until wee hours in the morning. Well, I was accommodated with a lock box next the room with our key. All rooms are accommodated with lock boxes for late night travelers which is so convenient. And then I found out the lodge has new ownership and a management team. This dynamic duo is putting all their TLC and soul into the Lookout Mountain Lodge with renovations and the rates are reasonable. My son is a college-athlete at Black Hills State and we will be definitely making Lookout Mountain Lodge our spot for this academic year! read more

BLOODY HANDPRINT IN BATHROOM!!! MY fiance & drove from 16 hours to Spearfish for a family gathering on the week of the 4th of July. I pre-booked our room a month prior, over the phone with Monica, who seemed nice & accommodating. We arrived after midnight exhausted from the drive & just wanted to sleep. When we checked in and there were sketchy people waiting in the lobby to see if we were a no show so they could have our room...they were visibly upset that we arrived. We got our room and immediately felt like someone had just left it...it was NOTHING like the photos...the air felt dirty (for context, I lived in a van for a year traveling and camping I can rough it-this was next level) We looked around in grave disappointment and were about to just deal for the night as it was late and we were tired but on further inspection I pulled the shower curtain back and saw the bloody handprint in the shower & said...NOPE I'd rather sleep in the car. (I took pictures) So we went and talked to Larry (Monica's husband) who apologized and confessed he didn't have help cleaning and he couldn't keep up...He wanted to "upgrade" us to a better room *we were actively looking for another hotel online* So we go to the next room he shows us and he walked straight to the shower and pointed "look, no blood" Like...um, great. It was still gross with crumbs on the floor and stains EVERYWHERE, it stunk, and after pulling the comforter back it appeared the sheets were not changed, and he just admitted to me he couldn't clean them. So nope. It was probably close to 2 am at that point & we were fortunate to find a room at the Best Western for one night & stayed in Deadwood the rest of the trip. This is long and i'm sorry--but believe it or not they wouldn't refund the money. They lied and said upper-management doesn't like to do that...they said they couldn't do it over the Holiday weekend...and then they tried to say they upgraded us and we chose to leave. It was a bio hazard there...it was disgusting...then they tried to keep our money and were sketchy about it. I think if anyone inspected that place it would be shut down. We filed a complaint with the bank and showed we never stayed a night in that trash hole so we got our money back. DON'T stay there it's gross and the people who run it are equally gross. read more

Please LISTEN up...I never leave reviews, but felt forced to on this place. If I could leave negative stars I would! We just returned home after a two night stay. While the room was clean and accommodating, the "resort" is under extensive reconstruction. No problem, we are understanding people. We had two jam-packed days and returned to our room to sleep both nights. And not early by any means. Around midnight both nights, the construction directly above us started. The walls and ceilings in this place must be paper thin...but I don't think it would have mattered. It was as loud as you could get. We were both kept awake all night both nights. To the point of considering leaving at 3:30 a.m.! We called the manager who agreed to put a stop to it, but it continued through the night. We talked with Chris who agreed to refund our charges, that is how bad things were. When I had not received an email confirmation of the refund, I tried calling back only to find my number had been blocked. I called this morning from my office, Chris answered and rudely told me he had no intention of refunding a thing. He then hung up on me. This was the most horrible hotel experience we've ever had and we travel a LOT. DO NOT STAY HERE!! I cannot repeat that enough! read more

Initially arriving was easy, right off the interstate. The lady at the front desk was VERY FRIENDLY and so accommodating, she even let us park the moving truck we have across four spots to keep a better eye on it. The room is very clean, the beds are very comfortable (although I have been traveling for four days, hahah!). There is a mini fridge, microwave, flat screen, and a large bathroom. The tub looks inviting for a nice soak too. There is ALSO a nice patio area just out front, seating all around. Great to sit and relax and enjoy the weather here! :) Definitely returning! read more

Arrived at 1230 for my early check in after calling two days before to get permission to arrive early. Lobby was locked with a sign saying they'd return before 315. They returned at 311. No remote in the room for the TV so had to turn channels by hand. Fell asleep around 11 and woke up to a fight in the parking lot around 1130. Bad enough to call 911. One guy was asking the girl to "grab the knife!!" and the other guy ran as the cops showed up. I guess he'd previously been kicked out of the lodge. The guy/girl in the room played stupid and didn't answer the door for the cops until they were about to kick it in. Cops didn't arrest anyone. Breakfast was coffee and pastries. Not the best hotel. Not the worst. read more

Woke up to ear bugs crawling on me. When I told the manager he stated he has seen them in some rooms. The place is run down and you could not pay me to sleep there again after that stay. No coffee or any services. Ice machine out of order. read more

The room seemed like it once was a good place to stay but today does not seem in high maintenance. The room smelled bad, the AC made a lot of noise and the fridge didn't really work. The noise from the outside was load and the bathroom was very small. There were also stains on the bedings and on the carpet. Also, the internet did not work! read more

Stayed at this place twice going to and from Canada and each time was a pleasant experience. The second, however, really solidified this place in my heart. We hit a pheasant on the way back south and it left my bumper torn to pieces and practically hanging off my car. When we asked the manager (who recently started here as well) where to buy zip ties, she directed us no further than her husband who has been fixing up all the rooms in the place and sprucing up the facility. Both were very helpful and very generous and in no time my car looked almost like it has never been involved in a murder most fowl. The facilities themselves look older, but the insides are cozy and the beds are soft. We had a small room both times that was tucked into one of the inner corners. I thought the lack of windows in the room itself were odd (there's a window in the bathroom and one in the door with an inner door to block the light and allow privacy) but let me tell you, waking up in the darkness is such a lovely thing. Cheap rooms do have their perks. This cheap room came with a mini fridge, a microwave, and a slightly run down tv with an eh picture. We didn't need that tv though so it wasn't really a big deal. The air conditioner is located in the bathroom and is VERY powerful. Just time your showers to turning it off and back on and you won't freeze. It cools down our room very quickly, something most hotels have issues with achieving. I've been told the current AC in this room is getting replaced with a digital one, similar to the ones already being installed across the lodge. The water goes cold if you shower too hot too long, so start warm and increase sparingly. It'll let you shower longer. I've written a lot but let me say this: this has been one of the BEST hotel experiences I've ever had. The next time I'm this far north, I'm definitely looking this place back up. They are clean, affordable, and genuinely fantastic. read more

In fairness it was the only place below $100 that I could find so close to the Rally. I was not at all impressed. The set up the room is odd. Bathtub and toilet in one room and sink in a completely different room. We had to ask for a blanket when the nights get Siloam to the 40s and 50s, and was given a blanket full of wholes and clean. We were greeted by the neighbor on day 2 who was hanging outside in her pajamas and said she was waiting for her "dealer'. Our room was not cleaned in 3 days!! Bed wasn't made and trash wasn't taken out. We thought they were off on the weekend, but let it go until Monday morning. The response was shock that there was anyone was in the room!! Really?! I paid you for it! It's comfortable enough, and it was cheap enough, but I will be sure to save for better quality place to stay. read more

Stayed there March 6th and 7th. They charged us 3 times and said they would fix it. It's been 3 weeks now and won't return my calls. I recommend if you decide to stay there, do not give them your card directly! read more
