My husband, daughter and I had the most wonderful day in Death Valley, one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. We had already been through Shoshone early that morning, for a stretch break and a snack. After hiking, sightseeing and driving for over 14 hours, we roll back in to Shoshone with the intent on using the restroom, and heading on to Baker for Bob's Big Boy. I have been to Death Valley more times than I can count and I have never been to The Crowbar, but on this night my family and I are hungry and it sounds better than driving another hour to Baker.
My daughter and I walked in first, because my husband was moving the car. We wait to be seated because we are not sure of the "rules". From across the room the cook tells us to "sit anywhere", and we do. After we are all seated, a bleach-blonde waitress brings us menus and asks for our drink order. When she brings the drinks we are ready to order. There is a choice of tacos, beans, and rice on the menu; my favorite. The waitress informs me "we're out of beans and rice" so I start to look at the menu for an alternative when she says, "I'm going to help these people while your thinking", and she walks away. While we were waiting three more families come in and sit at various tables. She goes and helps a couple in the corner. When she finally comes back she asks if I'm ready and I ask her if I can get a salad instead of the beans and rice. She says yes. I also order chips and salsa (on the menu), and the waitress acts like I just jumped on her last nerve and replies, "we have 'em, but they take a long time to cook." I see I have overstepped on my menu selections once again and withdraw my request for chips and salsa. My husband and daughter order cheeseburgers and a salad, and we wait. The waitress greets another family and takes their order with much friendliness and then delivers two salads, and a basket of bread to the couple in the corner. After about 15 minutes, my husband stops the waitress and asks if we can get our salads. She says she will bring his but that mine will be served with my tacos. She brings his salad, and after about five more minutes our food is served. They brought me three tacos instead of two, and I thought "great, this won't be as bad an experience as I thought." I was going to ask for salsa to go on the tacos, but I was afraid. The food was OK, but this waitress must just not have liked the way we looked because every time she came to our table she was completely indifferent and rude to us, while she seemed overly nice to everyone else in the place. I couldn't figure out if we came in at the wrong time, (three groups came in after us and were treated pretty decently), or if it was just because I attempted to order what I guess was the most difficult thing on the menu. About the time I'm thinking we never have to come back here again, she comes over to bring the check. She lays the check next to my husband and says, "I'm just going to leave this here because I am going to be in the other room cleaning up", and she walks away. She brings the check to the next table (dessert family), and says, "thank you very much!" She never leaves the area like she said she was going to do. When my husband walks to the counter to pay the check it takes a few minutes for her to walk over and help him. He is holding the check and his credit card and she practically rips them out of his hand. He looks at me like we are in the Twilight Zone. We are just regular people looking for a nice place to sit down and get a bite to eat. We weren't expecting much, and that's what we got. read more
