The menu is small but thoughtful with great cuts of meat, a few appetizers, soup, salad, pasta, beer, and wine. After a long day of hiking, a glass of wine was exactly what we needed. We started with a luxuriously creamy, well-seasoned potato soup and an orchard salad bursting with blueberries, apples, strawberries, pomegranate seeds, cheese, and a bright balsamic vinaigrette. Then we split a juicy filet mignon, the kind where your knife simply glides through. Even the veggie medley and mashed potatoes were perfection. And whatever you do, don't skip dessert. The warm date bread with vanilla ice cream and date syrup is one of the best desserts I've ever had. A couple notes: look for the neon lights out front because it's incredibly dark and easy to miss the turn. The dining room is romantic but tiny, maybe five tables, so call ahead for a reservation. Amazing restaurant in the tiny town of Tecopa, CA near Death Valley (lot of hot springs here). It is the middle of nowhere, no real services, no cell service, yet there is this Amazing restaurant. Steaks and Beer does not look or sound like a fine dining restaurant, but it is (it's pricey like one, though). Excellent food, craft beers, and wines (the wine was not pricey). Even though "steak" is in the name and what they specialize in, there is enough creative vegetarian fare to keep the vegetarians happy (not vegans though). When I asked Eric (Erik?) the chef/owner what possessed him to open such a restaurant in such a place, his reply was "It's where poor people go to open a restaurant." Honestly, for a talented chef, it is the most brilliant concept ever. The place has tables for 16 and 3 at the bar, they are open for only 2 hours a day, 5 days a week, and they were full. Definitive "hidden-gem". Chill/apathetic vibes/thrift store decor meets surprisingly upscale menu. Tiny place in the middle of nowhere. They didn't open until 6pm on a Saturday. When we walked in, all tables had "reserved" signs on them but we were invited to eat at their small bar. At first I was skeptical but the menu offerings looked freaking amazing. Two of us ordered the grass fed burger ($22), one ordered the filet ($45) one ordered potato leek soup (meh), and we had the cauliflower arugula appetizer to start. Appetizer let us know the chef wasn't effing around. Burger was served with a lovely salad topped with fresh berries and a vinaigrette (instead of the typical fries). Steak was at least 2" thick. This was the best burger I've ever had at a restaurant. And my friend who ordered the steak said it was the best steak he's ever had. The dessert offerings were made in-house but we were too stuffed to partake. The chef is the owner. It was interesting that he took our order rather than the server/bartender but service was great. The restroom around the back barely functions lmao, but you know, out here, any toilet will do. If you're coming from CA on the 15, check road conditions before your trip. Our exit (Kelbaker) was closed and the next exit wasn't for 13 miles. There was no warning, nor detour signs beforehand. Big waste of time and gas thanks to Caltrans or some other agency. read more

First of all, I love that this place is in Tecopa. So cool. We got the pre fixe dinner for two with the rib eye steak. The charcuterie plate was wonderful. I particularly liked the blueberry lavender jam and truffle cheddar. The salad was delicious. The soup (cream of potato) was not terrible but also not great, very watery and potato-y and thats pretty much it. The main course came out looking like a work of art. The vegetables and mashed potatoes were perfect. The balsamic glaze on the steak was amazing. The steak itself: first, you know the man knows how to cook a steak. Unfortunately the meat itself was very lean and tough. Not his fault, just not a good piece of rib eye. No marbling and not tender. Low quality steak. The dessert: wow! A date caramel chocolate syrup, warm and drenching a dense and delicious slice of date nut bread with a scoop of ice cream. Very rich. So good. The price was pretty expensive. $135 for the meal for two. With prices out of control right now, Im sure he had to raise the price just so he can make a profit. I saw several people turned away due to lack of space; the restaurant is not large and I felt lucky to have a seat at the bar. I ordered the Filet Mignon, which was cooked perfectly to the medium rare I requested. Sides included fantastic mashed potatoes and vegetables. I added dessert: a gigantic slice of cheesecake topped with a sublime berry/lavender sauce. Absolutely rich, decadent and delicious. Chef seems to be one of the hardest working chefs around. Judging from the conversation I overheard at the bar, he is head chef, sous chef, manager, shopper, server and host. And somehow out in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere, he creates sublime dishes that will blow you away. Who knew in the middle of the desert oasis that is Tecopa, if you know you know, there's one of the best meals of your life. Steak & Beer serves just that, Steaks & Beers. My friends and I went and ordered the whole enchilada before soaking in the mud. We started with the soup du jour which on this day was a potato truffle and boy was it dank. This alone was worth the 90 minute drive out of town. Second course was the warm arugula & cauliflower salad which is served with a delicious apple butter. This was some voodoo magic. When I heard apple butter, arugula and cauliflower in the same sentence, I was like ew; holy bananas was I wrong! Order it. Trust me. Next up was the filet, which we ordered medium. Cooked to perfection. Served with a beautiful truffled balsamic reduction, mixed veggies and dreamy creamy mashed. Hands down, one of the best meals of my life. Heard about this restaurants from friends, so when we made a visit to Death Valley and stayed in Tecopa we made a reservation for 7pm and was excited about our dinner. We showed up just before 7 pm & was asked if we have reservation, since they only have 6 tables you need one, we were showed to our table for 4, at first we did notice it was on the hot side in the room, it's a small room so with about 20 people inside, it was sort of stuffy, AC would be nice, but we ordered drinks ($8 for a glass of wine, which was a great pour! so worth it) We ordered the $110 prix fix dinner for 2 which included: a Cheese Board for 2 (sorry no pics, we were so excited we just started eating it) but it was wonderful with apples, blueberries with an apple butter and honey sauce, 3 different cheeses and bread. Next came a salad for each person, so fresh and a wonderful dressing, on to the soup but they ran out (we were the last seating of the day) so they served us a pasta dish..now I am not sure who got the better deal, the soup people or the pasta people BUT I will tell you it was the best pasta I have had in a long time! Next came the steak, for the prix fix you get one steak with mashed potatoes and veggies for 2, which after everything I just ate was fine! the steak was cooked perfect!! there was a sauce on it (not sure what it was) but it was excellent! Potatoes and veggies again were great. We finished with the Chefs choice for dessert, which was a Date Bread (from China Ranch) with a wonderful cherry sauce and vanilla ice cream, I shouldn't have eaten it but it was so, so good you just had to finish it! Even though the kitchen was very busy, Chef Eric found time to come out to each table and make sure everything was okay!, the person helping him (sorry we didn't get your name) was excellent and always there if you needed something. We will go back to Tecopa just to eat Steak and Beer and if you are in the area make sure you go!! He has a nice, rustic establishment not to big not to small with an outside patio and I guess sometimes he has music from a live band...it had rained so no music. Gayle and I rolled into nearby Shoshone after a long drive from Genoa NV through the Eastern Sierra via Manzanar and Death Valley. It was around 7:30ish, it was dark, and we were hungry. Unfortunately, the Crowbar Cafe across the street was closed and the only in-town options was the Chevron mini-mart next door to the Shoshone Inn. The nice person at the front desk suggested we take a further 20 minute drive to Tecopa, where she thought Steak and Beer would be open for a little while longer, and that she'd heard good things about. So off we went. After a dark "where are we?" ride, we finally saw the relatively dim lights of Steak and Beer on the right. We parked, walked up to the building, and cautiously opened the door. Inside was a very small dining area, a bar, and a tiny separate 1-table room to the right that Gayle and I rested our weary bodies, and ordered dinner. But first the "entertainment". A few minutes after we ordered, the next room seemed to erupt in an intense verbal argument among 2-3 couples about some undefined subject. One woman in particular got so angry and loud that Gayle and I thought there was a 50-50 chance that she was going to either walk out in a huff, or throw a punch. But before Gayle could hold me back so I could take a look and watch the show (I think I said something to the effect of "Now this is a Party!"), the owner effectively shut the argument down (either stop or take it outside), then making sure that we were OK. Again, this is a small place and sound traveled, even in the romantic area we had to ourselves. The even more enjoyable part was when the now peaceful party of friends (who knew we heard it all) were particularly gracious towards us as we passed their table on the way out. Back to the main course...... The food was fabulous! We split a well prepared filet mignon, a delicious vegetable mash, and cherries jubilee for dessert. I picked out a nice draft beer to start the evening and then switched to Gayle's previous red wine choice that matched up well with our meal. The other menu selections were somewhat limited, but were so interesting that we'd gladly come back and explore the choices a little more. We also came back the next day to see this place in the daylight (hence the picture). Steak and Beers was probably our most interesting and unexpected "foodie" experience in a long time. It's local, it's not candlelight and white table cloths, you can leave any pretentions at the door, and you'll be hard pressed to have a better meal out anytime soon. The restaurant was full when we arrived but we were happy to wait for a table. Hanging out outside under the pink and purple lights was really pleasant and the atmosphere inside was super cosy. Perfect after watching the sun go down over the hot spring. A friend and I shared the $55 1lb ribeye and it was one of the best steaks I've had in my life. I also ordered a coke and was given bottled Mexican coke - a total bonus and how I knew the place was gonna be good. The service was fast and no fuss - the chef came out in his Wolverine tshirt and basketball shorts to take our order, cooked it up, and brought it out himself. He helped bus the tables too! Good food and honest crew. I got the burger because I wasn't prepared to find this spot. I was camping nearby and saw it and wasn't even sure it was a restaurant. It's a hidden gem for sure. I came in with no reservation because I didn't know I needed one. The two chefs were cool about it and let me sit at the bar. Cooking things did take a little longer but I think I was just impatient because I was hungry. I saw every table getting the cheese and fruit plate and I regretted not getting it. Listen- I wasn't prepared for the gourmet food that came out of this kitchen. But I should have been when I saw the homegrown micro greens in the kitchen window. The burger was fantastic. Probably one of the best burgers I've ever had. Two other no reservations came in and sat with me and I convinced them to get the burger as well and they were impressed too. The berries balsamic salad that comes with it is nothing to scoff at either. I honestly almost asked if they grew all of it too because it was great. I damn near licked the plate. I decided to try the dessert. Though they don't have the cherry dessert anymore the other chef with the hat and long hair got me to try the date dessert. I've never had anything like it. It was rich and dense and sweet. So good I let my neighbor try mine. Couldn't be helped. They had to try it. That good. Price for a burger, dessert and 2 sodas ran me about $45 before tax and tip. Not bad for the quality I got. The chef is a take no shit guy. You take it or leave it. He knows he's a good chef and they have reservations booked out. I appreciate this kind of direct hospitality. I will say the chef was relatively accommodating, given he was about to close. The decor inside is quite funny. It's super small. 3-5 small tables. Humorous signs on the walls. They were fun to read while we waited for our food. My steak salad was not as good as I expected. The salad was amazing. Harvest salad. Super fresh fruit. If I could describe this restaurant in one word that would be Extraordinary. The place it self is stuck back in time and its located ways away from city lights and glamour. When you step inside you will find a this small restaurant stuck in time and you will wonder, what did I get my self into. The menu is modest and not many things to choose from. This place is destined to be on a foodie TV show. You will have bragging rights just from eating at this place. It's unique. The food is amazing. Chef Eric is awesome at cooking bomb meals. The filet or the burger is my go-to. Also try the cheesecake. If you come try this place it will give you stories to tell your friends. By no means is this place "normal".... but what's good about normal? Nothing in Tecopa is normal. If you're anywhere within 90min drive of this place it's worth a detour to come check it out. Place has good food. But there is one big flaw and the reason I didn't give five stars. The reason we will never return. We called and made a reservation at 12:00pm for 6 people plus a baby (who is 9 months) and the man on the phone he had availability at 7pm. I said perfect! I also said on the phone that two of the six people were small kids. Anyways we walked in at 6:55 and told them we had a reservation at 7 under Kelsey. They asked how many and I told them again the 6 plus a baby. The man at the front turned to the chef and told him. The chef replied very rudely how did it turn into 7 and was so rude. The man at the front was nice and said he would put some table together. So we waited a little bit and then go said at two very small round tables by the window. That was fine we made it work. I'm the meantime there was another party of two sat by the window. The man at the front was taking beer order for people outside. The chef was cooking and then would come out and take orders too. So the chef came out and went directly to the two men by the window greeted them and took their orders and and then came to our table. He was like what do you want. And we said we'll do you have any menus. He walked away hugged and puffed and returned with some menus. But he didn't hand them to us and apologize for the air or anything, he TOSSED them at us all around the table. I was in shock. I come from a fine dining restaurant background and I've never been treated like that. After he tossed the menus at us he walked away. Didn't explain anything, didn't tell us what the menu was about, but he did with other tables. So we looked at the menu and decided. We then sat there and waited and waited. Eventually my Jain and got up to order drinks from the guy at the front since no one was going to take our drink order either. And the guy at the front got that wrong. He got my husbands beer wrong but at that point we didn't correct them. The chef eventually came back out and took our order. We thought that the prefix menu came with pasta because it was listed above the prefix menu. We wanted the pasta for the kids. When it didn't come we asked and he said he didn't come with the prefix. We said ok and ordered it separate for them. The food was good, but not worth the drive and especially due to the service. When you go here be aware they use goat cheese a lot and truffle. Nothing was ever explained to us and there was no desertions on the menu either. So be careful. We drove out from Vegas to try. Needless to say we will not be back. HORRIBLE SERVICE. As a young musician touring around the newly reopened East Germany, it took a while to get used to "restaurants" where the only option was "The Meal That We're Serving Tonight". If that meal was Bratwurst with potatoes and sauerkraut- and you didn't want Bratwurst- then your options were "Sauerkraut or Potatoes" This place is similar. If you don't want Steak, then your options are essentially the sides that go with steak OR pasta. To be fair, the owner and the menu were both clear about this. Being that we didn't want steak, but wanted more than a salad, we each ordered the pasta, and it was fine. But clearly, this place is as advertised - a Steak and Beer place. If you go in expecting this, you won't be disappointed. Prices are reasonable for the isolated location and cheaper than anything you'd get on The Strip next door in Vegas. 4-stars for advertising integrity and for what looked like some pretty fabulous steaks (even though we can't eat red meat). read more
