I spent the morning with my 2 year old daughter working on her bike while watching Duck Tails. We realized we needed new screws and nuts. I figured my local Ace would have what I needed. We had a better time than I planned on. First off, disclaimer - I'm a fan of Ace Hardware. It might be a chain but the ones I've encountered have the personal one on one attitude of an old fashioned hardware store. This one did not disappoint. This one was actually shocking. It's located in Southgate Shopping Plaza and the first time I stepped inside, I was taken aback at how squeaky clean it was. Shiny! Sparkly! The right hand side is the hardware side and the left (actually a conjoined store) is more of a housewares/knickknack/department (?) store. Everyone I encountered working there were super young, but so polite and nice, and not in a condescending way either. They were all eager and willing to help me find what I needed. They would even walk me to where I'm going to show me themselves, but always respectfully. (Every time, they have had exactly what I needed, no matter how odd.) This is a stellar example of a "high-end" hardware store that you could take someone super-picky too but still get excellent service and pay down-to-earth prices at. Seriously! read more

Got an obscure part that needs replacing? This is the place. Not only will you probably find it here, the staff will actually know the name of the gizmo you just brought in. In remodeling my house, I found the surface electrical conduit clips were not only old, it didn't resemble anything carried by any other store. Took it here and they had it figured out in seconds. Although that design of conduit clip was discontinued decades ago, they steered me towards a modern design that fit the bill without modification. Why ding a star? Prices are a bit stiff, but I guess you do have to pay for service. read more

BUYER BEWARE! Please check you receipt before leaving the store. Visited this morning and purchased a screwdriver combo. Upon checking receipt, I noticed I have been charged $8 MORE than the price displayed in store. When I showed the cashier, she didn't seem to care, and asked me to show her, not believing me. When I showed her the display, she promptly grabbed all remaining merchandise, and said they were mispriced. I asked her if she would honor the display price. She said she had to ask "Tal". After several minutes in back, she came out and said Tal would not honor the price. Nor would they honor the ACE online price, which was significantly less than the regular price she claimed was the actual price. It's a slightly longer drive out to Lowes or Home Depot, but after this experience, it may be worth it. I bought more than $100 worth of tools today. Sad they treat there customers like this. read more

I like to endorse local businesses and I wish this was one that I feel safe and comfortable in; however, that is not the case. I have shopped at this store well before it was associated with Ace Hardware, but I can no longer support them. Why? Because the staff do not wear masks or face coverings and seem to show no regard for the safety of their customers. I live in Lakeland Florida which has a mask mandate. Today I went to Publix (they are doing a great job) and there were only two people not complying - one an older man who had breathing problems (shouldn't have been out in the first place) and the second an Ace employee who even wore his name tag. (The Publix is in the same shopping center as my Publix.) So if you cannot mask up for others, this person of a certain age, can choose to shun your store. read more

Crowder Brothers is an excellent local hardware store (ACE I think). It has many of the little "something-or-others" you want to buy just one of to fix a home problem. It has a lavish and fun gift department, great housewares, lots of bird and squirrel feeders, cards, yard art. I bought something too large for my car and the manager allowed a clerk to run it home in his truck--that kind of service doesn't exist any more. Some items are a bit pricey, BUT, they have a lot of items you probably won't find anywhere else (I didn't know you could still get kerosene heaters). You can also buy just one part instead of a whole package, as mentioned before. Very friendly and helpful staff. If you describe what that doohickey looks like, they can tell you what it is and take you right to it. If you have no idea where to find a household item, yard tools, or hardware, Crowder Bros. is the place to start. read more

Today I went to return a item which I purchased at a different ace store , I had my receipt , the manager (Joe) would not give me what I paid for the item but instead only refunded the amount that they charge for it at their store. What made my experience worse is he had a bad attitude he told me to drive back to where I originally purchased it out of town to get the full amount that I paid thats poor customer service . He lost a loyal customer over a few dollars . Businesses should remember that customers choose where they want to spend their money. read more

I also want to say from the start that I love this store. I'm currently in my 50's and I've been shopping there for well over 40 years. I even tried to get a job there about 20 years ago...I was overqualified, I guess I waited too long. Now, if you want to know all of the great things about this store, read all of the great things in the other reviews, they are all correct. I don't have time to talk about how wonderful that store and their staff is. This will be about three things I know for a fact that they absolutely must improve. One, stop running people out of your store near closing time. The tactics are diabolical. They have the usual come back tomorrow announcements, but they dim the lights...a lot. Then staff pours out of the woodwork to "assist" you, more than they already have. You can even hear over their radios how you've gone from an older gentleman in a blue shirt to "we still have one one isle 6". Two, start accepting most returns that are in reasonable condition. Stop giving people such a hard time and dirty demeaning looks. I personally no longer return any items to that store. My grandfather taught me never to return any hardware related items anyway, as you will eventually need them. So save yourself a trip. But, occasionally I have to bend or break the rule. If I have any doubt that I'm keeping something, I go to the big stores first. Unfortunately that means ACE/Crowder Brothers has lost a lot of my business over the last three decades. They continue to do this to people all of the time. I still end up shopping there at least once a month and every other time I walk up to pay for my items they're giving someone a really hard time for returning something. Try it sometime. Three, I'm not even sure how to say this one. A lot of the reviews talk about how this store takes you back to an earlier time or era. Like a nostalgic experienced some kind. That is relatively true, I can't disagree with that. But that earlier time was rife with civil issues that this store has managed to hang on to. It is not overtly so, but it is palpable enough to notice. I'm very observant and an experienced people watcher...yes, that's a thing. I have spent copious amounts of time at or near this store because I find this particular aspect of human nature interesting, sad, but interesting. If you don't know what I'm talking about then you must be a person of the lighter colored variety. Like I said, it's not overtly so, but it is there. I should have taken a star for the first two items and two stars for this last item on my list, if not all of them. But, as with any situation or company, there are also very good people involved. This is a great store with very helpful and knowledgeable staff. There's no denying that fact. Personally I've always noticed that problems like the ones I'm describing here begin at the top and trickle their way down through the staff. Since I have personally dealt with the manager(s) a few times, including the time I tried to get a job there, I'm convinced that if it doesn't start with them, then maybe it's their boss, or the owner(s), whom I've never met. I'm not sure I want to. Well, I hope you've enjoyed my review. I must leave now to visit this very store which opens at 8:00. I never shop there late in the day. Except on the rare occasion that I want to show someone how they treat people as they're about to close. But I digress. Seriously, check out the store. read more

Came in and was personally told that we could return an unopened item bought from ACE for store credit, we left to get the itens and returned only to get sketchy looks from a cashier who requested for a manager to talk to us. Spent half an hour talking only to get nothing, was then transferred to the store Manger only for him to NOT apologize that one of his employees gave us a false promise and tell us he can't do anything and he kept looking at me up and down. We then left only to be given weird looks from another cashier lady who immediately looked bashful when I gave her the same look back. Won't be returning. Passed by this Ace many times always admired the shopping center "it is an absolute architectural gem" finally Sunday June 26th 2017, went in and it was just a wonderful experience, the store is a walk back in time back to maybe 1965!! The staff was super friendly and so well informed and knowledgeable I will have a hard time explaining why I shop at the Big Box stores!!! You have to see this place ITS AWESOME, the shopping center is a step back in time, reminds me of Hoffmantown shopping center in Albuquerque New Mexico. They really have a great selection of EVERYTHING and all the old time services like Glass cutting Keys, a great paint department, a neat and very well appointed gift shop!! Great feel of a local/neighborhood hardware store. They're hard to find anymore. The staff is more than helpful, it's convenient to the center of town and downtown. It's not your super-hardware store but but that's a good thing. they have just about anything you need iin a second to start or finish a project. Had not shopped there in years, first time I needed specialty plumbing they helped me find it with a friendly associate. Second time, the entire younger staff was watching a football game and they were not friendly associates. They didn't know the products.. At checkout their register deducted 9 something from my total automatically. After they had taken my card. They said they needed to put it through a second time. The second was for a balance, she explained something that made not sense. I have over 40 years of experience on different computer systems, build my own and know some code. The receipt was like nothing I've seen before it applied a credit, deducted a second amount. I tried 3 times to explain it to the young lady who said her name was Caitlan. She was rude and mean spirited telling me she was NOT WRONG. She also appeared to know nothing about computing and failed to wait to get my Ace Hardware Rewards Card. She assured me it went through for the correct amount. After wasting my time, I asked to see a manager because I know when I got home there was going to be a problem. After I the receipt was off and I had never seen a register receipt like this he told me he didn't know anything about the computer part and barely was polite. Next day I checked my bank account. Sure enough, the part that took off the credit was wrong I was undercharged. Like a dummy I called the same Manager. He was rude did not thank me for being honest, told me to come down there with my credit card and pay right now. Did not act like a professional business person. I was in train the trainer program for one corporation and grew up with a small business consultant. This manager was watching way too much football, cared nothing about his store's business operations at the register. At that point he still did not care about how it had happened or what his worker did wrong. He was still looking to blame me. I told I would get there when I get there, I never to that way. He was still rude. I would not hire Charles or whomever he was to sweep floors. When I walked out of the Store I told myself never again would I go in, it turns out Walmart carries the same products. Trying to get with the store manager but I'm a very busy person and the only ones who watch TV here are my cats. So maybe Caitlan can get a sex change and work with the guys who just stand around and watch TV, takes the same skill level. It is an outrage to be highly skilled and told to shut up, NEVER GO THERE. read more

I have lived in Lakeland for 9 years, and almost every time I have left any business here, I have felt like the staff was super rude.....Until today!!! This business has it all together, the store is clean, organized and beautiful, the employees are knowledgeable, helpful and kind!!!! If I could, I would buy everything from here!!!! I wish the owners would open up a grocery store and clothing store, there would be no need for me to spend money anywhere else!!! I buy all my stihl equipment at crowder bros. It's time to reconsider the stihl brand. My weed wacker head attachment, the part with the motor, is constantly in the shop for the same issue - the muffler keeps falling off. (This is the KM 56 kombi motor. I use for weed wacking and blowing.) They have given a new cylinder and re-tapped the screw hole before and after the new cylinder - with the same result. Nothing they do resolves the problem. It's obvious that something beyond "repairing" the unit needs to happen but Stihl corporate will not stand behind their equipment. They need to throw in the towel and admit "repair" is not the answer. As for Crowder bros - they are friendly but I wait for days and days to get repairs done. Additionally, I have their power washer. I've used it on the driveway twice. Before completing the driveway the second time the on/off switch broke. I had to wait for it to run out of gas to shut off. My next purchases will not be Stihl. read more

The Southgate Mall is a jewel compared to dreary strip malls and the huge indoor malls. With Crowder bros at one end it is bookended on the other by Publix. Another quality store. I don't review a lot but they honestly deserve the rating. And I've never had to return with a new key for "another touch". read more

I am very impressed with the stock and staff at Crowder Brothers Ace Hardware. Not only are they do the staff have knowledge that the other big chains lack, but the down home charm we have really lost hasn't been lost at all here. My keychain came apart after store hours and yet three employees took their own time and found it on the side walk outside the store.
