This was a hidden gem on our way to the airport. Karen welcomed us warmly, making us feel very comfortable. She explained the cheeses and offered samples. Our favorites were the smoked garlic, caraway, and aged cheddar. Ken, the head cheese maker, explained the process, and we saw the cheese-making in action. Crowley Cheese is sooo yummy! If you are in the area and looking to try some really great, raw milk cheeses this is a nice stop. Crowley was our first stop on a day of exploring the Vermont Cheese Trail (yes, look it up there is a map with all the 411 on creameries that allow tastings all over Venmont- spoiler alert there are about 40+ creameries to try). Here's how it works. You enter the tasting room which also has a little shop adjacent to it filled with local snacks and gifts. If you stop in on a day where there is Cheese production, you can see that from the room. We went on a Saturday, so there wasnt any production going on but that didn't stop us from trying all the cheeses. Annette, the employee was so helpful and set up the best ever cheese display for us to sample thru. Their thing is cheddar, and they have so many varieties of cheddar flavors for you to try. All of this is free! I loved the unusually sharp- which is aged for 2 years! My plus one loved the chive cheddar- so smooth and flavorful! You can taste your way thru as many of the cheese samples as you want. If you find some you Love, like we did, you can purchase them! I recommended having a cooler with ice in the car if you're going to diff creameries because I promise you will have cheeses you want to buy along the way! This spot also had awesome Vermont made sauces and snacks which we bought to take home to the fam. A Siracha sauce made with Vermont maple syrup caught my eye for my dad, and he absolutely loved it. Amazing cheese at great prices. This is one of the oldest establishments in the area that produces some great cheese. We got the sage cheese and the habanero one. Both were great and we kept snacking on them. There are no tastings but can't go wrong in purchasing any flavor of your liking. read more

If you like cheese you must come here! It's small but the cheese is amazing! They have some cool flavors like garlic chive and hot pepper. We also got a cheese that's been ages 5 years! This is a hidden gem off of VT 140! We saw the turn off on our way to Ludlow! During the week, the owner and lead cheese maker gives a tour of the factory and shows how the cheese is made! We visited on a Saturday so didn't get to go on a tour, but we got to sample several excellent cheeses (my favorites were the smoked and hot pepper cheddars)!!! Omg please. We are on vacation in VT. How could one NOT stop here?! It is a very tiny shop with a personal touch. Every single cheese was available for sample. I fell in love with the "unusually sharp" and the chive cheese. In addition to cheese samples they give you samples of jams and syrups and caramels. I walked out of there 60 dollars poorer than before but TOTALLY worth it. It was heavenly!! And I grabbed us some maple leaf candies because...Vermont!! I was so overwhelmed (in a good way) that I forgot to grab a hunk of unusually sharp. So we are one mile away from Crowley's so before we leave to go back home tomorrow, I'll be stopping by there. We were visiting from NYC and of course Crowley Cheese is a landmark so we had to go. Because of covid, they're not offering any tasting and we couldn't even go inside (although we didn't know and did walk in, I thought the old guy working there was going to have a coronary) so after we were tossed out we had to order our cheese from outdoors and then when the old guy recovered from us walking inside, lol, he took our order and brought it out to us. I am a cheese fan. Fondue, plain, flavored, nacho, with wine, on bread, with jam, with fruit any way you can make it I will eat it. So logical step go to a cheese factory when i was in Vermont. Crowley cheese is a Gem. It is in the middle of nowhere and TINY! BUT, it is very reasonably priced and the staff is wonderful. They talk to you about everything from the process to the price to great pairings. You get to sample EVERYTHING! even jams! Now the cheese! Sage cheese is the best! Second best = garlic chive! Third best = extra sharp off the wheel. if you want jam -this is all home made and goes great with the cheeses. the ginger rhubarb jam is my favorite. They were not making cheese at the time, but we did get to walk around, sample cheeses and ask lots of questions. Milk delivery is on Tuesdays and then cheese making begins. read more

The store is cute and welcoming, we had a blast trying the samples and watching the cheese makers. The cheese was priced right and we bought the smoked and the hot pepper one, along with some maple mustard and a nice stick of pepperoni. Then we waited, and waited. Standing in the store like two loon while watching the cheese makers do their thing. No one at the counter or working in the actual store. I can totally understand that being so much out of the way that it would be a waste to keep someone just for the register on a Thursday but we would have appreciated a little sign saying when one of them would be available to cash us out. Maybe, 15-20 minutes later one of the cheese worker came around and cashed us out, explaining that they really couldn't stop what they were doing. read more

Crowley Cheese is in an out of the way small community in southern Vermont. They produce a single cheese that is distinguished by how long it has aged or by additional ingredients (e.g. sage) added to the cheese. They produce a sharp aged cheese that we attempted to obtain but were unable to during this visit. Their factory is open to the public where you can watch cheese-making. Their mild cheese was quite flavorful but not good tasting. A number of grassy flavors were present but did not go well with the cheese. Based on the poor mild cheese, this place should get a single star, however, it seemed at least possible that the aged cheese would fare much better and if I am able to get some, I will update the review. read more

Best ever. They are open, however only curbside pickup because of COVID. The gentleman who helped us was gracious and kind. We ordered 4 blocks of cheese (sage, muffuletta, extra sharp and smoked garlic) and a smoked/spicy maple syrup. All was amazing. Even my 12 year old son has turned into a cheese connoisseur. I have been here several times because this is such a historic cheese making location. If you get there when they are making cheese, it's fascinating! AND the cheese is delicious. Such a great piece of history. Also, very friendly and willing to answer any questions. I love this cheese so much that I bought some for myself for Christmas and had it mailed to me. Loved that!! However, the one block of the cheese didn't seem right. So when I called them about it, not only did they replace it, no questions asked, they replaced ALL the cheese I bought!! Went with my fiancée this past Sunday on one of our cheese runs. Tiny little joint packs a huge flavor punch! Many cheeses to try, I liked the garlic chive but the fiancée fancied garlic so that's what we went with. Both texture and flavor and texture are on point. Rude and arrogant. We arrived right near closing, sampled some cheese and then were preparing to pay $20 for cheese and crackers. The big guy in tshirt was closing the drawer and stood there completely ignoring my wife for 10 minutes as we watched him count his money. Two other employees walked through, said hi, said hi to guy at counter. We continued to wait. Guy at counter asked other guy to close the front door. (Snide reference to closing time. Perhaps we weren't supposed to be there?) So we eventually picked up the cheese and put it away and picked up the crackers and put them away and left as guy kept counting. Barely a word to us. None of the three noticed or cared. Arrogant and rude. No more Crowleys for us. read more

Yeah, whatever, other reviewer. I've flown around the world on a plane, I've settled revolutions in Spain. Well, more like I've been to several cheese dynamos, in Switzerland fresh extruded from a cow, eaten on the street with fried fish in Holland. And this cheese stands out, perhaps because it's soft and accessible in its cheddar-like simplicity rather than some odd, hard combination of nutty and cloying. The hot pepper cheese is the right blend of sharp and spicy. It is probably my favorite along with the sharp (the other reviewer is right, the mild is less remarkable, but the sharper cheeses are quality). Crowley has the potential to attract moochers being as they have a generous layout of samples and are nice enough to let you hover for a while. However, the fact that it's going to get dark soon or you eventually have to drive back to where you came from necessitates buying a block. They also have outstanding homemade jams that go well with the Cape Cod crackers. We came home with the apple butter and rhubarb ginger jam (I think that's what it was called) and I also liked the plum. It must be mentioned that they are the oldest cheesemaker and have an interesting cheesemaking process, etc., plus I know that Mike Rowe of Dirty Jobs must have been pretty disappointed that they don't have the hygiene of a New York tenement and rampant cases of Cheese Washer's Lung. They didn't even know what Cheese Washer's Lung was (don't worry, I gave them the full description). read more

LOVED Crowley cheese. Sure, it's small and rustic, but they are super accommodating and the aged cheddar is out-of-this-world. Really really loved it. The voucher is an absolute steal. There's also another promo on a different check-in tool (hint hint) that gives you a free block of cheese just for checking in. Excellent experience. There was no internet service at the store but the proprietor still honored a Yelp check in coupon that none of us could access until later. The cheese selection was varied and well priced, and they let us sample an obscene amount. Then we bought an obscene amount, and it was awesome. They also sell delicious mustards, jams and crackers. We discovered Crowley is the oldest continuously-operating cheese factory in America, and we can all benefit from their experience. The staff is helpful and knowledgeable and the cheese is amazing! The Hot Pepper and Extra Sharp are distinctive and delicious, but we also enjoyed the Smoked.
