Paul did a beautiful job on our custom maple wainscoting and bar work at Bohemia. This was not a basic install. The project involved a lot of layout decisions, uneven floor conditions, outlet coordination, panel proportions, cap details, and making sure everything would work both visually and practically in a commercial space. Paul was thoughtful throughout the process and clearly knows finish carpentry. What I appreciated most was that he did not just rush through it. He took the time to think through the details, explain options, and flag things that could affect the final result before cutting into the material. He was especially careful with the panel layout, wood movement, grain direction, and how the base and trim should be handled so the finished product would both look right and hold up well over time. The wainscoting came out really elegant and clean, and the craftsmanship is obvious in person. It gave the space warmth and character immediately. The bar work also came out great and tied in nicely with the rest of the room. Paul cares about the end result and it shows. "Disastrous Trim" ...An unprofessional mess. I hired Paul to install wainscoting in my dining room, as well as complete a few other trim-related projects, all of which turned out to be a disaster. The wainscoting was supposed to be red oak to match some of the existing millwork throughout the home. The workmanship was absolutely atrocious. The joints were horrid and amateurish. Nothing was level, straight, or even lined up properly. I had to keep pointing out blatantly obvious mistakes, and each time, he got annoyed with me for doing so. The other trades working in my home were shocked at the quality of his work. At one point, we had to tell him that he had completely mixed different oak grain patterns. He blamed the mill for giving him mismatched pieces, instead of noticing the issue himself and going back to the mill to exchange them--as anyone experienced with wood would do. He also removed some of the door and window casings, and while reinstalling them, badly damaged them by using massive nails and screws instead of proper finishing nails. I had to remove, repair, and reinstall them myself. I also hired him to replace some wood ceiling planks, which turned out to be another mess. He cut many of the planks far too short and simply nailed them to the ceiling, leaving massive gaps on either side. A child could have done a better job. After I raised the last issue with him, he stopped responding entirely--even though I had fully paid him for a job that was not complete. An unprofessional disaster who royally messed up several areas of my home--areas I now need to pay someone else to fix. read more

Paul helped us fix what we thought was an impossible situation to resolve - his perseverance and willingness to find a solution is the most we've ever seen from any of the contractors we've worked with. We originally reached out to Paul about taking out an old bathroom pocket door right at the entrance of our house that wasn't working properly , and replacing it with a swing door. After meeting with multiple other contractors, who realized they couldn't fix the issue, we thought this was the only option. Paul actually recommended we instead try to fix the pocket door. He could have easily told us to just replace the whole door - a big investment- but he had the integrity to try to fix what we already had, and keep what was original to the house, which matched our other doors.  Thanks to Paul our pocket door is fixed! They were nice and I really wanted to like the job they did installing crown moulding in my condo, but I had to work way, way too long to smooth all the overfilled nail holes out because they told me to smooth over the spackle with a damp paper towel, yet the edges of the holes were popping out and not smooth and I had to sand them down and refill them anyways. The caulk and adhesive used on the butt joints (which I didn't say anything about at time of install because I trusted they knew better than I did, but now I really know should NOT be used) cracked and split when the weather recently got cold. Not to mention, it wasn't until I got really up close to some of the corners of the crown moulding that I saw about half of them were not mitered/coped properly, leaving one side slightly lower and almost impossible to smooth out to make the join look seamless. I'm disappointed and honestly wish I would've just done the job myself even though it would've taken my disabled self a week or more to install it. Would've saved me a lot of smoothing out/fixing time. read more

Paul and sons built a custom and historically accurate 1758 colonial mantle in my house. It completely transformed my living room fireplace. Absolutely horrible experience with Paul and His son. He was hired to put base moulding and door frames. The job was sloppy, and that is putting it mildly. Left things incomplete. Moulding were not cut at 45 degrees. His attitude is even worse, complaining all the time that its taking him longer then he expected. Since we agreed on a flat rate. For some reason, he values his daily work at 1650usd per day. And since he spent half extra day due to him not estimating the time correctly his attitude was horrible. Paul, your daily rate should be no more then 150, per the sub par work that you have done on my job. If I hired some unskilled laborer from off of home depot store, the bob would have been done better. By far, the worst sub-contractor I have worked with I am just very surprised where he got all these good reviees Pictures of the sloppy, incomplete job being uploaded. read more

Where to begin. Good first. Paul communicates well. He is definitely responsive and helpful. He passed on his discount for materials on to me. Thank you. Sadly, this is where it ends. We scheduled trim work in a 1300 sq ft home (my brothers house). He told me it would take 2 days to install. I wanted to paint them before install so I picked up materials and had them ready for his install. He bid this job on 2 days of labor. I managed this project for my brother and they moved out for the construction. We started early (NP) but he failed to tell me he was going to do this in one day. I'm sorry, I didn't enjoy being on site for 12 hours. I didn't want to leave the house open for them but ended up leaving anyway around 8pm. He came with one worker and chop saws set up In the driveway. To start with, they were sloppy installers. They said they "over fill" the nail holes so we can wipe it down. I told him I pre primed and painted. Now we have more work because he over filled. I am a project manager and understand that no house is ever perfect. Trim work is a FINISH TRADE. They make crooked "even". This so why they get more money than average labor. When they blame the unevenness of a wall they are sloppy and unskilled. This was a basic MDF product. I was shocked. His corners were not even or mitered. He used 60 grit to sand them together and it was terrible to patch and paint. He bid for difficult cuts and never made them. He just pieced straight edges together and "overfilled" the cracks. Honestly, I kept saying, you're a finish trade, please fix this. He said if he was going to do it like I wanted he would be here forever and charge more. Meanwhile, he did charge more! I paid 150 for a consultation/bid (applied to job of hired). Honestly, he cost me more money in the time I had to spend going over his work. Not to mention the babysitting I did. When I had to leave for the day, at the 12 hour mark, I asked them to please pull the locked door closed and leave one bathroom light on. I arrived the next morning and all the lights were on in the house, he filled all my trash bins, recycle too, with his salvage material and TONS of sawdust in the driveway and some in the house. I'm sorry, but this was one sloppy sloppy finish trade. For those that do not understand a FINISH TRADE may just be fine with his work. Even take him at his word that it's YOUR HOUSE that is the problem. And yes, in the end, your painter will make it look fine.. but this moulding work creates more work than is necessary. I wish I had taken more pictures. He just sanded where he didn't make the correct cuts. His worker patched sloppy dirty fingers marks in the hole fills.. what we were hoping was just trim touch up had to be a complete repaint. So, it was wasted time for the days prior to his arrival to prime and paint. Again, he wasted my time. I paid 1800 for one long day of sloppy labor. I'm sorry Paul, you are a nice guy but I was disappointed with your work and tried to tell you how to fix this during the day, but I don't think you wanted to hear that you were doing something wrong or listen to my concerns. read more

I can't say enough great things about Paul and Spectacular Trim. We wanted to replace the crown moldings on our (new to us) colonial home and replace the baseboards in my son's bedroom that had gaps after we removed some old builtin bookshelves. Paul was super helpful and helped us pick a crown molding that really fit character and style of the house. He also found a molding that was nearly identical to the one taken out of my sons room (he offered to have some identical baseboard milled up, but we chose not to go that rout). He also found a few spots that he could help like a window sill that had its edges hacked off previously, and a beautiful solution for an odd trim piece in a small hallway. He explained his methods and "coping" techniques which really are better then the typical miter joints you'll get from most carpenters. On install day he showed up with just one other worker. They used tarps for all materials, covered their shoes with plastic to keep our newly refinished floors from getting damaged or dirty, and cleaned up after themselves. We've had a lot of people working in the home recently and none have been as respectful, helpful, and pleasant to deal with as Paul and Spectacular Trim. I have to say, my wife and I are very picky when it comes down to small details, and Paul's work exceeds all of our expectations! Can't recommend them enough! read more

Where do I begin !!! Ok Paul is literally a modern day Van Gogh. He takes his craft seriously and is fully equipped with all the latest technology. He came over took pics of my place and then later that night he send me renderings of different options of what we can do with my space. He was able to change the style all from is iPad. At point I wanted black moldings and trim and he sent me a rendering of it to see how it looked. I can assure you that he is THE BEST in the business. We started a renovation on our recently purchased 115 year-old house. The house posed many challenges because of the type construction and age. Nothing in the house was level or even and we knew this would require more than a standard contractor to make the windows look great. We found Spectacular Trim on Yelp and after reading the reviews, decided to give them a try. Not only would the window trim and sills be a challenge, but so would the timeline because the work had to be done in between the general contractors work on the house. We started the process with a call to Paul the owner. He described how he worked and gave us a link to view his previous jobs. Paul suggested a planning session to review the project together. There was a $150 fee for the planning session, and it was well worth it. On site, he pointed out features on the original window dressings that we never noticed and suggested ways to incorporate the original design into the renovation. On top of that, he applied the $150 fee toward the actual work! Paul and his helper setup what looked like a cabinet workshop in our living room (remember the house was empty and under construction) and proceeded to build custom trim for each window on location. The eight windows, one entry door and a custom built-in cabinet took two days and was amazing when completed. Throughout the two-day period, Paul continued to send short videos and pictures of the progress so I knew what was happening. The detail restored the house to what it was when new. We couldn't be more pleased with the job and look forward to using Paul again soon for the interior door trim. read more

Paul transformed my plain dining/living room with the addition of crown molding and changing out the cheap undersized baseboards in my humble 1947 home. He is very thorough in his consultation, has dozens of styles to choose from and makes suggestions based on the age and style of your home. His vision is superb -- he suggested that we remove some old trim from a large beam and wall and drywall it instead -- he even had a great drywall guy that he recommended. We followed his suggestions and couldn't be happier with the results. I now have an adult home! He works very quickly as he knows what he is doing.
