Crushed Cellars is a little winery right off of Route 9. We walked in late on a Sunday afternoon for a wine tasting. The guy behind the bar pouring the wine was a smartass and hilarious! We tasted all the wines available. The Reds were my favorite - the 2014 Petit Verdot was really nice! And we got a bonus taste of their Blackberry wine! Yummm! Hidden gem alert! Great experience at Crushed Cellars - the owner (Bob) is so friendly and welcoming! The merlot was delicious and so smooth - one of the best I've had in the area. Crushed Cellars is an easy one to drive by and completely miss, but don't let its house-like charm fool you! Inside, you immediately walk into the tasting room and see the grand bar. Seating is a little limited at each table, but the huge bar makes up the space. There's also outdoor seating available, as well. They have an excellent selection of cheeses, fresh bread, and delicious jams and spreads. I recommend the Mango Habanero for sure! Pour it on top of some cream cheese and enjoy with crackers! Also, Bob, the owner was such a wonderful host! I love him! Him and our server made our experience here absolutely fantastic! If you're lucky, he'll even offer you some Blackberry wine! This was by far my favorite thing I had tried all day during our vineyard hopping. It was DELICIOUS! This place has definitely become one of my staples and I'll always be back! Awesome customer service, good wine. With almost 10 acres under vine, both here and further south, they are on the smaller side. Crushed Cellars definitely put the 'farm' in 'farm winery'; be careful not to hit the free roaming chickens when parking! The cozy tasting room has a fun/casual hangout vibe, including puzzles and games in the corner. They also have free snack samples, plus lots of farm goods like eggs and even meats. I saw someone get a BIG cheese plate for $8, but I went for the cupcakes. Crushed Cellars is also one of the most dog friendly locations in the area. The tasting included 5 wines for $8, although I also got a sample of their Meritage which was not on the menu. During last year's visit I wasn't overly impressed with many of their wines, but this time I saw a marked improvement in quality. The prices were all really good as well. Whites: 3 stars? Maybe 3.5? I wasn't a big fan of the Chardonnay, but to be fair there aren't many Chards I like. The Vidal Blanc was OK, although the $19 price was good. The Traminette was advertised as semi dry, but I found it to be more 'dry' than not; my favorite of the whites. Reds: 3.5 to 4 stars. The Meritage had a cherry palate. The Cab Sav had a nice nose and was soft. But the big hit was the Syrah/Cab Sav blend, which was somewhat fruity and only $25. When I make space in my wine rack, it will be a nice addition. While wines were generally pretty good, what blew me away was my server's (who as also the owner/wine maker) genuine friendliness. Crushed Cellars is my family's favorite winery. Bob is an amazing person, so fun and knowledgeable. Last time we were there, he was cutting flowers outside for some ladies! The atmosphere is small and intimate, a great space, and a very peaceful outdoor area. We love to rent the upstairs for parties. The blackberry wine is so sweet yet delicious. The Chardonnay is always a favorite too. Definitely do a tasting here, as you're usually offered things that aren't even on the tasting menu, and they're good. Small winery with some of the best customer service you will find around here. I stopped in for a tasting and they could not have been any nicer. They kept bringing us free snacks to sample and made sure our wine glasses were full. They had a good mix of wines, while I did not think any of the wine itself was a "must have", nothing we tried was bad. Based on the wine alone I would have given a solid Four Stars, but they deserve a Five simply for the way they treat the customers here. read more

This is not a big place. In fact you can hardly see it from the road. There is just a little sign that says winery (and eggs). We were feeling adventurous on our way to hike in the Shenandoah Forrest, so we did a quick u-turn and pulled in to the lot. At first glance it looked like they were closed. We almost got back in the car, but then my friend Kevin spotted the yard of chickens and decided he needed to pet one before we pulled away. As he was in hot pursuit for pre-cooked poultry, the man we would come to know as Winemaker Bob came out of the house. This man may be one of the nicest winery owners I have met. Even though it seems they are only open on weekends, he opened up shop for us and started pouring the wine. My favorite by far was the Cabernet Sauvignon. We had stopped at larger winery up the road and no question, Winemaker Bob's wine was MUCH better. Bob was extremely generous with our tasting and even went in the back and brought out many different cheeses for us to sample. We had so much fun drinking wine and eating yummy cheese with Winemaker Bob we never made it to the Shenandoah Forrest. I suppose good wine and great company beats a hike any day. I loved my recent visit to Crushed Cellars, not only for the wine but the great customer service. Rare in my many visits to area wineries have I received such enthusiasm and generosity, much less my the actual owner! Crushed Cellars is a pretty small winery. The tasting room is rather intimate, and there is some outdoor seating. But, it's quaint nevertheless, especially with the free-roaming chickens out and about, peering in at your while you enjoy some wine! We ended up being taken care of mostly by the owner. And he was happy to continue pouring past the prescribed tastings. When he found out that my friend and I really enjoyed the Traminette, we must have received a handful of extra pours thereafter. In addition, we ordered a glass of the 100% cab to enjoy, and he poured us a bit more after we finished our glass. We also were given complimentary bruchetta and bread and olive oil. A few of the other customers were enjoying what looked to be a nicely put together cheese plate. To me, this is how it's supposed to be done. If you love your product and what you do, share that with your customers! Enough with the nickle and diming, because if your customers like the wine and have a positive tasting experience, they are likely going to be big supporters and buy plenty of your wine. Crushed was definitely selling quite a bit of wine while we were there. It was a great tasting experience, as made all the more fun by the owner and his clear love of his wine. The atmosphere was relaxed and casual.. a place to hang out with good friends, have wine and interesting conversations! The windows make the place bright yet welcoming vs. the dark and dreary basement tasting rooms at other places. The Seyval was crisp and delicious and the Cab was a little too dry for me but my friends loved it. They also sell several cheeses and jellies made by local farmers which go perfect with the wine. Stopped here yesterday with a friend from my wine club and we had a great visit. The customer service was impressive- we got a complimentary plate of little pieces of bread with various types of bruschetta and tapenade on top- and the pours were very generous! My favorite wine was the second on the line-up, the Vidal Blanc. Also, you cannot beat a $5 tasting! Rare in this part of wine country. They also had various types of local goodies for sale, including bread, which was something ridiculously cheap like $2? My friend bought a loaf that we enjoyed at our next winery stop. Crushed Cellars has a very, very relaxed vibe and is so quaint and unpretentious, a nice change from many of the more hyped-up tasting rooms in Northern VA. And the chickens walking around, I mean, come on.. Too fun! We were traveling from Sunset hills (right down the road) to our next destination, and saw the Winery sign and decided to stop by, and we were so glad we did! Our server (I can't remember her name) was extremely nice and chatted with us the whole time. The pours were EXTREMELY generous, and she even let us resample some of the ones twice. Then she went to the back, brought out the raspberry wine, and gave us some of that as well. Then, the owner (Bob I believe) came from upstairs let us sample some jams and filled our glasses up again! One of our favorite experiences from our weekend getaway! Definitely recommend! read more

I went today with some friends, and we loved it. It's quirky and not your typical winery at all. Compared to other wineries, Crushed Cellars has such a laid back vibe to it. The music selection was also unexpected (Blink 182 at a winery? Yes, please). The wines were fantastic, as were the jams/jellies and cheeses. All of us walked out with 1-5 items in the end. The service was a little slow, and we weren't walked through each of the wines the way other wineries do it, but that wouldn't deter any of us from returning. Customer service is exceptional! The owner customized our tasting: I'm not a cab sauv fan, so he gave me some Blackberry Wine instead, and brought out complimentary chocolate and a Klondike Bar to go along with the tasting. The location with the chickens was really cute and quaint too, and they accommodated a large group without qualms. There were lots of complimentary snacks to compliment the wine tastings: bruschetta to go with the red wines, dips to go with the whites, and chocolate to go with the dessert wines. This past Saturday a friend and I decided that we would hit a few of the Rt. 9 wineries so off we go! We hit Hillsborough, Sunset Hills, Doukeinie and one other. The star of the show though was Crushed. The sign is no bigger than a postage stamp and is situated right next to the sign advertising eggs.....so we stopped in. We were greeted by Bob who made us fele completely at home and he proceeded to begin pouring wine and sharing cheeses with us. He was offereing three wines that day.....a Seyval, Vidal Blanc and a Cab. While I am not a huge Seyval fan, his wine was spot on for what it should have been and I actually enjoyed it and could easily imagine this being paired with shellfish or cream based pasta dishes. The Vidal Blanc was amazing. Now too sweet with just enough fruit to make this a perfect summer sipper out by the pool. The Cab was fantastic. Simple but not like a huge California cab, but it was a bigger cab. Great light oak, toast and vanilla nuances with smooth tannins and some ripe dark fruit... I virtually never buy wine from VA, but we bought three bottles that day. Two cabs and one vidal blanc and I can't wait to tear into them!!! Bravo Bob. read more

Crushed cellars? Crushed expectations. So we kinda ended up here by accident. Whilst wine hunting we made a wrong turn (not to be confused with but actually go ahead and confuse with "Wrong Turn" the movie) into a driveway of this winery. When in Rome (or rural Virginia) we decided to go inside for a drink. A chicken greeted us at the door. And by greeted I mean ran out from behind the building...scared the poop out of me...then ran away. Welcome? Once inside we were greeted by a friendly/awkward 'hello' and made our way past the rural looking folk at the homemade looking bar. Seating for four was quickly arranged for our group next to the out-of-order popcorn machine (?) and the chaos ensued. Wine was thrown at us without coherent explanation. Quite similar to the parties I throw on my living room sofa but those are free of charge. Some delicious cheeses were served to us by children but I'm sure I could have bought the same stuff in bulk at Safeway without child labor. The owner/host/midlife crisis entrepreneur replenished our wines and awkwardly chatted us up. Which lever do I pull to be crushed by a giant safe? Soon the journey was over and we made it (ran) back to our car. I wish the best of luck to this vineyard but for the time being I am going to pass. I guess they sell eggs too? This is a great new place. They have 3 wines for $3, along with great cheeses and pepper jelly to try along with them. They sell a lot of really cool organic, locally grown fare. Bob is the owner and he's a great guy. He talked with us for a while, and he's pretty excited about growing more wines. I took home a bottle of the Seyval Blanc. He let us preview a Chardonnay that was also stellar. I can't wait to come back as their wine selection increases! If only Yelp had "half star" options. Bob's Crushed Cellars (or, as it appears in his tasting room, "Crushed Celery") would get three and a half for sure. He has eggs, honey butter, jams and jellies, freshly baked bread, honey, pretzels, even "organic" lip balm....wine sort of seems like an afterthought. After chatting with Bob, it became clear that this guy is larger than life to the nth degree. With several years living in California wine country under his belt, getting involved in winemaking in Loudoun County seemed to be a natural fit. Currently he has three wines--Vidal Blanc, Sevyal Blanc and Cab Sauv. The vidal was way too sweet for my taste, but the Sevyal was refreshing, although not the kind of wine I'd drink in the middle of an Arctic December. The Cab Sauv is the winner - and apparently Bob has more reds on the way. He offers everything under the sun for you to pair his wine with - crackers, bread, honey butter, pepper jelly, peanuts, cheese. A few things N.I. (need improvement)---he had a radio station on (not XM or Sirius; not an iPOD; a RADIO STATION). And it was for that new crapola they call "music" (the stuff they play in clubs). Hearing that, along with 20 minute commercial interludes, did not add much to the relaxing vineyard experience. But Bob was so welcoming that I couldn't bear the thought of complaining about it. The tasting room is kind of unfinished and the loft area upstairs is not the ideal spot for wine enjoyment in the winter. I suspect this place will be just fine in warmer months, though. And this must be the first Virginia winery I've visited where other guests had no interest in the wine....the eggs were the stars last Saturday. read more

On our way from a winery to a brewery (yes, it was a good day), we lamented that we didn't have any more wineries to visit. As if the wine gods were listening, we spotted a small sign on the sign of the road--"Tasting Room Open." Screeeeech. U-turn. Pull up a chair at the tasting bar and begin our tasting. The winemaker wanders by and chats a bit. The woman pouring our tasting is friendly and knowledgeable. They give us a little sample of some of the products they sell. Oh, you liked that wine a lot? Would you like another sample? Thanks! As in all tastings, there were wines that we loved and wines that we liked. But unlike most of the tastings we've done in Virginia (west-coasters originally), we enjoyed each wine. The atmosphere was relaxed and more like a family restaurant, where you just happen to also be tasting great wine. We had been looking for a place to relax and have a full glass after our tasting, and this was it. Great decision. We often like to get out for the afternoon to a vineyard to relax, this one has become a new "go to" winery for us. The last time we were there we went based on the Yelp reviews as we've passed it by many times in our travels, but after one visit we were immediately fans. Note of caution, there are a lot of chickens roaming around, the are not the friendliest of vineyard animals but enjoyable to watch. This is one of those wineries that what they lack in pizazz and luxury they have more than made up for in their wine. Some such as their Chardonnay and Cab Sav you will find lighter than usual and very flavorful. We've had the same pourer each visit who is absolutely great and the gentlemen whom we assume is the owner makes sure everyone is having a good time and should be complimented on the wines and ambience. The woman serving us remembered us from our last visit which was probably a month or so before, but was just as cheerful and knowledgable which made for a great experience. Very long story short, do not be fooled by the curb appeal. This is a great place for relaxing wine and great food such as the $10 cheese plate which is huge and assorted meats. Get a bottle or two to go, take a glass to the patio and watch the world and chickens go by and enjoy. read more

We sought out close-to-DC vineyards where we could bring our puppy along for the ride, which brought us to Crushed Cellars. It's a small pretty bare bones place, which is nice. There are a few tables outside and a few inside, and a tiny amount of vines that lead down to a pond. The wine were good, actually - we enjoyed our tasting, and loved that our puppy could hang out with us. It's a bit close to the road, so you don't feel too remote, but worth stopping by and close to many other options if you're on a wine trail. I moved to DC from San Francisco about 2 years ago and when I heard that Virginia had a wine scene, I was skeptical. Lucky enough to taste the fruits of the Bay Area's second-to-none food and wine world, I headed to VA wine country with low expectations. Then we found this place. Crushed totally "crushed" my turned up nose with their amazing wine (loved the Seyval and merlot) and winery. Their sweet 2nd wine was fantastic as well. Not too sweet. Having spent weekends regularly driving up to Sonoma, Napa and Mendocino, I found the Crushed wines to be on par and their tasting room to be like that of one in Sonoma or Mendocino...casual, friendly and inviting. There's an outside patio where you can enjoy a glass or bottle, as well as their homemade breads, imported spreads or cheeses (some made with Crushed wine) as you overlook the vineyard. We had the spicy jelly and goat cheese as well as the basil, tomato, and olive spreads. They even have chocolate goat cheese. In addition to the delicious wines and snacks, the operation is also pushing forward locally grown / organic offerings like eggs, meats and jam. There are random chickens roaming around that produce the eggs. We learned that these are "pasture raised" as opposed to "cage free" (apparently chickens trapped in a coop with a window are considered cage free). The owner's kids were very knowledgeable about the chickens so for a suburb-raised girl like me, it was fascinating. The whole experience had me feeling like I was in California. The 5 stars is a mix of two big things for me, customer service and the wine. And they are very dog friendly. The tasting room is kind of small, but quaint. The bar holds about 8 people and there are 4 small tables in the room as well. There is an upstairs, which I didn't see, but the tables do overlook the tasting room. There is a nice outdoor seating area facing the road and it is covered. The wines were decent. I ended up liking the Traminette and the 100% Cab Sav. I bought a glass of the Cab. Bob was very generous with the pours. I didn't feel I usually do at other wineries when they pour. He let us have extra tastes of the ones that we were more interesting in and those pours were equally as big. We did sit there for a while just because it was so lovely and he was so friendly. He ended up giving us some bruschetta with our tasting and then with our glass he brought some bread and oil. Customer service sells big for me. Even if I love a wine somewhere, if their customer service is bad, I won't be back. Bob has the right idea. His place isn't pretentious in the least, but it is every bit of a quality winery. His customer service is what sets his play apart. It shows too. He was very busy while we were there and many of the people were semi local. Tasting was $5 for 7 wines (6 are listed on the tasting sheet). Their pours are solid and we got no grief or judgment when we wanted to re try a few. Those pours were just as big. As a Wino, I understand that everyone has their own opinion about wine. You have experienced people liking mature wines, inexperienced people liking bad wine, and then even a mix of those. It's shocking how sometimes I may get a bottle of wine at a restaurant, think it's exceptional, then realize it's $8 at total wine. Even when it comes to particular wine and certain wineries, it's all about the current crop, bottle shock, etc. Taking all this into consideration, I normally don't make reviews of wine, because everyone has their own opinion based on endless variables. I do, however, wanted to review this winery because it has potential. It's not your average winery. Don't let the chickens, various products for sale, or the bedside manner of the tasting person deter you. For a brand new winery, they are producing some pretty decent wine. I would definitely suggest stopping by and giving them a chance. I think we're going to see good things come from this place. read more

The wines are really good (for VA quality) but the 5 stars is mainly for service. Most of the wineries in this area serve the same varietals, so customer service is really what's going to set them apart. The staff was overly accommodating. Extra pours during the tasting gave us an opportunity to really decide what we liked. We eventually got a bottle of the Meritage. Highly recommend if you bring kids to this area and need a place that is ready to entertain your kids to keep you focused on the wine. read more

I went to Crushed Cellars last week. I went several times before and found Bob to be friendly and attentive. The last couple of time, that wasn't the case. The wines were ok, the only one that stood out was the Meritage. He did sell me a glass after I waited, but he only seemed interested in helping his fiends that were there. I was also interested in picking up the Organic Sausage as well as some beef to make spaghetti sauce. He seemed that all he wanted was for me to settle my tab and get out, he didn't even see if I wanted to take any bottles with me. He did say that he hopes I will come back soon. I wish I could give a better review, but I can't. As for coming back to visit his winery, let's just say that with over 270 wineries in VA, it's not looking good. read more

I need to do an update. It's only fair to be honest whether the review is good or bad. In 2011 we visited and I was not impressed...you can see my review. We decided to visit again because a lot can change in four years...especially with wine. The change is pretty amazing. The wines are pretty good....nothing special but good. Until you hit the Cabernet Sauvignon! WOW very good. This Cab is worth the trip, please stop by and try it. the rest are good so a nice Chardonnay for the white wine lovers. The winery is a bit small so keep that in mind if bringing a group. Friendly, my son was fine (he's 12) I'm glad we stopped again! read more
