Pros: This was a fun little venue. A few drinks and snacks are offered at the concession stand, and there is more than enough room in the lobby to hang out with friends. I got there about 25 mins before the show started at 9pm, and I'm glad I did - I was able to get better seats (3rd row and on the aisle)! The host was fun, the improv staff were hilarious, and I thought the show was great, especially for the price! Cons: Parking is uncool and there were more than enough shady looking street roamers walking about but considering the location, that tracks. My husband and I stopped here on a Friday night for some Improv fun. I have been to Improv comedy clubs before but this one was slightly different. The improv show was family-friendly, which to be honest was a little harder to enjoy. If you know me, you would understand. The audience consisted of the elderly (there was a senior pick up bus available afterward) and a few children. Of course, you have about 25% of just adults. Overall, the cast could be funny and I did enjoy some of the show. There is snack foods, soft drinks, beer and cider available. I enjoyed a few ciders while at the show. You can pre-purchase tickets or buy at the door. We had opted to buy at the door and there was room for us in the bleacher (back room seats). Recently Comedysportz has starting doing some stand-up comedy after the regular Comedysportz program. Some nights they even offer open-mike so any fool can come out and try and be Robin Williams or Steven Wright or Sam Kinison (the holy trinity of stand up). The Wife and I have always enjoyed their Improv shows so we were stoked to try something new there. They featured four comedians, two women, two men... two and half of them were funny. If you are an experienced stand up fan you know that anything over 40% funny is a good evening of stand up. We were impressed. So now you have an even better reason to go back and discover Comedysportz all over again for the first time.. the second time. Or something like that. And why would you need a fly swatter...well..that's how you vote for the comedy team you want to win. Wave those fly swatters everyone. No real rules....except... No swearing allowed, unless you want a paper bag over your head for the rest of the night and don't plan to get drunk and go to this show, they will pull you out and make you the fool. Are you looking for an awesomely hilarious night out?!?!?! Comedy Sportz is the way to go!!!!! Its not comedy about sports, its comedy played as a sport. Genius. The teams we got to see compete were as follows: Blue Team- John, Sam, and Ken Red Team- Bethany, Amy, and Matt The ref. for the night was Shane, and she was amazing!!!! The improv games the teams competed in even had opportunity's for audience participation. The crowd is divided into sections, our night there were the Panthers, Koala Bears, Seagulls, and Unicorns (my section.) Each section gets to offer improv prompts throughout the show, they even have some games that need audience volunteers. The audience votes with their "Judge Swapner" fly swatters (get it... like Judge Wapner, but its a fly swatter.... so Swapner... its groaner for sure.) You will need to buy the Swapner's for $3 at the concession, but once you have them they are good for life!!!!!! If you decide not to invest in the Swapner, thats ok too, but it means you don't get to be a participating judge, and no complaining if the team you're cheering for doesn't win!!!! But lets be honest, everyone wins at Comedy Sportz. I was in tears from laughing so much, and everyone leaves feeling like they were part of the game. Oh how vivid my Comedysportz memories. My friends and I would pile into someone's car (or someone's mom's teal borrowed minivan) and head into Portland! Oooooo, Portland, you guys...the city! It was very exciting for us to go into NW (THE cool neighborhood at the time) to crowd in the little theater room to see some improv games. I'd always get really nervous about volunteering answers 'cause I thought I was kind of funny (not funny) but I was really timid so I couldn't always do it. And I think I had a crush on one of the players. Sweet, sweet little 16-yr-old Lauren. It really is a cool place to go with the fam. It's fun, it's kid-safe, there's crowd involvement. It's just great. Back in Portland, 10 years later, I've been meaning to go back, but I'm afraid it wouldn't be the same for me. Comedysportz is a venerable Portland institution at this point. Running for over 14 years, the gang here consistenly puts up good shows week in and week out. Comedysportz is improvisational comedy that uses suggestions from the audience to build scenes. Done in a "sports" format with a ref and opposting teams, audiences pick the winners and sometimes end up in the performances! CsZ is KID FRIENDLY, with no swearing or blue humor allowed. I wasn't sure what to expect from this experience. The place and organization of the show seemed a little rink-a-dink. I suppose you need people to be a little off the wall in order to do comedy right. Most of the audience were regulars, so it kind of made me feel like I had crashed someone's birthday party. Once the show started the cast did a good job of making everyone feel equal and welcomed. It was dependant on audience participation, which is always fun, especially when they pick your idea. The cast was split into two teams, and after each skit the audience cheered for the team they thought should win the round. It wasn't always judged entirely fair, but no one really cared anyway. Two things I regretted: Not volunteering for the sound effects skit (where the audience member makes the sound effects for the skit), and not telling the people behind me to stop suggesting Hawaii for every damn thing! read more

I'm torn between A-OK and Yay, I'm a fan. Although I'm pretty sure I'd spell yay differently. Went here for he first time Saturday evening to watch my friend perform stand-up. She had taken a class with Alex someone and this 10pm show was the culimination of that class.She was awesome! The other students were pretty good (the Ron Jeremy dude was funny as hell). The teacher/mc Alex also did some jokes, and a guest comic showed up at the end - both were good. I was a bit early for the 10pm show so they had me sit in the back section. Basic classroom type chairs are comfy enough for 2 hours - I prefer the cushiony seats of the Brody theater, though. While waiting I inquired about a beer - I was lucky that Alex happened to be behind the bar, because it seems only a couple folks can sell beer. There were maybe 5 types - around $4 a bottle - perfectly reasonable for the situation. I had a heffeviezen (sp?). I moved to the front section after my freinds arrived and once folks from the first show started leaving. Don't know whether they were alloweed to stay if they wanted to. Looks like a lot of the shows cost $5 - cheap! My show was free! The 20 minutes I saw of the 8pm show were fun! Mostly improv stuff/excersizes (like we do in my improv class!) The bathroom was at the other end of the theater, and I was drinking beer - you do the math! But all in all, it was a fun way to spend some time. Even the bad stuff can be kinda fun and I was there as support anyhow. I will surely go again (but don't call me shirley). read more

I first ran into ComedySportz at work - they were doing a workshop for a bunch of managers and they got us all communicating and collaborating and laughing together so effectively I decided to check them out. Their shows are fast-paced and funny for both adults and kids. This is so important for me because, since they don't "go blue", they have come up with stuff that kids can laugh at but still works on an adult level. It's like a Pixar movie. And it's a great place for a date. Their "Comedy 101" class was great. I learned some great skills I could apply at work (like listening and thinking on my feet) and I met some really fun people who are still friends today. And, because they practice improv values ("Say yes," "Make your scene partner look good" and others) it's the most supportive atmosphere I've ever experienced. Good CLEAN fast moving comedy skits performed extemporaneously based on audience input and participation. Two teams of comedians play against each other, like a sporting event. Comic teams have to actually use their brains QUICKLY and skills to make you laugh and wiggle your funny bones in order to win your vote as the funniest team. There is a referee that controls the action and solicits the audience for suggestions. Some skits a person (adult or child) in the audience works into the skit seamlessly with the help of the comics. Lively and fun atmosphere in a quaint place with good seating for a few hundred. Good for adults and children. Nothing rude or lude. I moved to Portland just in time for "stay at home," so I was really happy to be able to take advantage of live ComedySportz via Zoom last weekend. It was great to be able to participate in my comfy pants with my dog and my wine, yet because it was live it was more engaging and required me to be more present than just watching something on TV. I think it was the first time they did this by Zoom, and it worked out very well. The audience could participate by typing in topics and voting, and it was a fun hour and went by pretty fast. If you haven't seen comedy sportz before, note that it's improv games, not standup routines, so it's not someone telling a bunch of jokes. Comedically, some bits were funnier than others, but I was totally impressed by how quickly everyone could think on their feet and play off each other throughout. All of the players were really good. They used Venmo for donations, so everything was easy peasy. read more

Not really funny. DEFINITELY not funny for teens. Waste of my time it's a clean act so even though they claim it's for people of all ages it's really just for kids. I know it's called "Comedysportz" but I was still surprised by the sport arena vibe. I don't know what I expected. It smelled like a boxing ring which was even more unexpected. If you have kids it's a great place to go because they don't serve alcohol and they censor the performers and audience if things get too out of hand...literally they put a bag on your head...or maybe it's just the night I went. But the format made it entertaining anyway so I can't complain....it just would have been more fun if I was a mother of two and not a single booze drinker. read more

Great clean fun! I took my son and friends for the afternoon show for his birthday when he turned 11 and laughed so hard I cried! We went again last night and had a great time. There is no problem with parking. We used the lot one building away mentioned on their website both times. If you're a fan of the craft of improv, I'd say this wouldn't be for you. This is a fairly heavily produced spectacle, not really a raw showcase for improvisation. The improvisers were very good at what they were doing (a couple of them blew me away, in fact), but the format of this show kind of locks them into quick-hit zaniness, instead of actually developing scenes with any meat. If ComedySportz were billed as a theme park style show, I may be tempted to give it a 4 or 5, but as an improv comedy show, I feel the 3 is generous. read more

Heard about comedy sports online and for the price of tickets you really get your money's worth. I was somewhat hesitant when I saw the number of kids in the audience (10-15) the style of comedy was gonna be too wholesome to actually laugh out loud but me and my gf got more than our share of laughs.
