Haven't stepped foot in the building before, already have problems. Purchased tickets to Adam Friedland like half a year ago. Options were: rescheduled show, credit or refund. I chose refund. 7-10 days, supposedly. At this point, I don't want to think about the $110 dollar comedy show tickets I couldn't attend. I want that out of mind. I randomly decide to check my card to see if it's been refunded after my May 29th refund request. June 22, nothing in my account. Notify MGMT with receipts. They punt the ball to the ticket vendor on the 23rd (supposedly). 8 days later after correspondence to get this corrected, no response (June 30). I call the vendor SeatEngine, and they've purportedly not heard from Helium. They made it right, processed my refund and sent me a confirmation. Again, I don't want to be thinking about a comedy show I now can't attend because it was rescheduled. Helium, this is on you. You could have at least reached out and said something like "sorry for the inconvenience; we reached out and they're fixing it for you (smiley face business nod). Nope. Called again today, left my information. Like the 3rd or 4th time they've not answered or returned my voicemails. I certainly do not trust this business with my money. Unfortunately, as a new city resident... I will not be visiting one of the (supposedly) good clubs in my new city. You have multiple voicemails and emails, you've given me nothing. Website said open at 5:00 for show, waited in line and opened at 5:30. While waiting in line, staff left to take a 15 min doobie break in front of us and funked up the entire line. Out of all $9 beer listed on menu, said staff forgot to put kegs in fridge (see prior pot break). Great headliner. read more

We had a great time seeing Nick Thune. We didn't realize there was a required purchase of two item per person but we all got a drink and an entree so it worked out great. We arrived an hour early (seats were GA) and after a little wait in the lobby/bar area, they seated us close to the stage but thankfully not front and center, so it was perfect. Drinks were good, food was surprisingly tasty (pro tip: upgrade your chips to the fries. They are beer-battered and delicious. I've been here twice so far. I have been with a date and also by myself to see a comedy show. Overall this venue is on the older side. The seats are a little uncomfortable for me. I do think there is really no bad seat in the house. It's easy to buy tickets online and get checked in at the box office. No digital tickets as of now. Service both times I have been here was slow. I didn't have any food and try to keep my drink order easy. Cider for me. Street parking is fun. Haha be careful not to block an unhoused person's tent. read more

They seem to spread their servers thin so they seem a bit frantic, especially during the show, to get to all of their tables. My one complaint about helium is the incredibly tiny tables. We were a party of 3 sat at a table sized for 1 (maybe 2). With ordering food and drinks it's literally impossible to fit everything on the table. We came here for a show on Sunday (Mother's Day) for shapel Lacey. we were a few minutes late . They gave us a nice two person booth off to the side. Good view and our own table. Again we were LATE! Now the COMPLAINT: We had tickets to Steph Tolev last night 5/15. We arrived 50 minutes EARLY!!! Cuz I love Steph. And had extra time. Tell me why these dumb employees seat us by the KITCHEN DOOR UNDER A HUGE LIGHT THAT NEVER WENT OFF??? And all the at to the fuckn side of the stage??? Told us we had to share our table cuz it's "sold out" I'm like okay? Why can't we sit closer at those you know TEN OTHER EMPTY ASS CHAIRS closer to the stage??? We got here EARLY!!! Had a great first time visiting during the Portland stop of the "That's Messed Up: An SVU Podcast" tour. Some others have mentioned their disappointment with the food offered, but I have to tell you that the Mediterranean platter impressed me. If you're expecting a five-star meal at a bar, you'll probably not get it (in the same price range, at least). But, it was way better than I would have expected! I tried to get information over the phone for an upcoming show, and the phone operator, Sabrina, was very smug and rude. I noticed that when trying to purchase tickets for Ms. Pat for April 17th-19th, her link took me to Helium. It looks like Helium is double-booked with Chris Higgins for the 16th-18th of April. The representative responded very rudely, saying, "I can't change dates." I asked for additional help from a supervisor, but she refused the request. Absolutely horrible place. Dangerously overbooked and overcrowded, incredibly rude staff. As a couple we paid $64 to attend a show here last night. Showed up early and were taken to a tiny 2-top table that had 6 wood chairs crammed around it like Tetris and surrounded by a wall. We were told that they force 6 people to cram into this 2-top, and that we could not even sit next to or across from each other on our date, that we had to sit in single file line with one of us in front (with a wall partially blocking the view) and the other directly behind, in order for the other 4 chairs to be taken by people we did not know. Zero legroom, worse than a plane, crammed into a tuna can with 5 other people. The place was so overcrowded you could barely walk through. I am a slender to average sized person and I could barely get into the front seat as it was literally crammed flush to a wall corner and a table, with a chair right behind it -- so anyone any larger at all would never fit. Incredibly non-inclusive. The person trapped in the front seat also would literally not be able to get up to use the restroom at any point, as you are blocked in by the walls, table, and other seats -- which is clearly a fire and safety hazard. On top of it being unsafe and overcrowded, what is the point of spending $64 on a venue for dinner and a show where you literally cannot look your date in the face because they are stuck behind you, but are staring at a wall jammed in with 4 strangers and a table you can't use? I explained that as a disabled person I could not be stuck in a seat where I could not move my legs or get up for the restroom when needed, or get outside quickly if I overheated to avoid passing out from my POTS and neuro diseases (it was way too hot in there, even for my able-bodied partner, we were suffocating) -- I was scoffed at by the rude staff and told "too bad, this is how we always do it here, take it or leave it." So much for accommodating ADA or just being decent to the customers who give you a paycheck. Not to mention that they REQUIRE each person to purchase 2 drink and food items while there, so we had planned on eating dinner there -- how the fck are 6 people supposed to fit their food and drinks on a 2-TOP, hold dinner in your lap as you awkwardly fumble behind you to try and reach your drink somewhere on the table?! When it's $64 just to get in the door, and the mandatory bar food and drinks are outrageously priced? You have to be fcking kidding me. It was the most horrible overcrowded nightmare I have ever experienced at any comedy club or venue, and the rudest staff ever. The guy just scoffed and said, "If you don't like it you can leave" so we did, and we'll never be back. I have been to comedy clubs all over Chicago and Atlanta and other cities, and this is the worst crap I have ever seen. After reading other 1 and 2 star reviews that say these same things, it is clear that the owner is as rude as the staff (and likely coaches staff to be this way) and that he clearly doesn't give a fck about their paying customers, or our safety or basic comfort or ability to eat their overpriced bar food we are required to purchase. It is clear that they are there to make as much money as possible, and overcrowd the venue to pad their pockets. When a "local" venue cares more about capitalist profit than the safety and experience of their customers -- or their customers' disabilities -- that's a hard no. You don't give a fck about the people keeping you in business? Then you don't deserve to be in business. Avoid this place like the plague. If you want to see comedy at a great venue, go see comedians at the Aladdin or Revolution Hall, or Funhouse Lounge or Kickstand Comedy. You'll have a way better time and you'll be cared for as a customer. read more

The comics were funny, the host even funnier, and liked the interactive option of voting for your favorite comics. The food is what you would expect, picture classic bar food with irregular food temps. The drinks were underwhelming - just stick with beer and wine. Helium boasts some big comedic names for a small unassuming club in a low key neighborhood. It is just across the street from a brewery and a couple quick blocks up from a super cool food cart pod. I found parking easily but I gave myself ample time and showed up at the club over 90 mins early. It should be noted that the few open parking spots surrounding the club were taken shortly after I arrived so if you need or want to be close to the venue, plan to arrive early! Our IDs were checked at the door and up the stairs we went to, around a small corner and we found ourselves in the little bar just outside the comedy room. Once our group letter is called, we have our tickets scanned and are ushered into the room, seated near the door with a pretty good view of the stage. I imagine the people who got there sooner, were seated sooner and got the seats up front. We ordered drinks and food, both were decent enough but nothing to write home about. This is our second time at the Helium Comedy Club and we had the pleasure of seeing Corey B. Its was a funny night. We can't remember our waters name but he was good. Prompt service. Always with a good attitude. He kept my beers coming, soooo A+ in my book. All the staff seemed nice.... maybe not the "Security Guy" checking people as they came in. Maybe not talk to people like their doing something wrong and try not acting like it's an inconvenience to you. It was our first impression of the night and what's up with all the questions and not checking anything. If I was being stupid and had brought something, couldn't I just lie and say I didn't have anything? Anywho. We got there a little early, about 45 minutes and it wasn't bad because the line starts in the bar. Nice. There were two areas to wait. General admission and A Reserved Area. General Admission was just standing in line. Reserved was all the seating area with a rope defining the two area's. We noticed some people sat in the Reserved Area and my Wife was there with an injured leg. She somehow figured out how to get into the special area that wasn't even half full and rested her leg while we waited. I didn't mind the wait because they had Monday Night Football on TV. After the doors opened. Reserved first... ya, ya, ya. Then General, we were seated in the back at a nice table. Our new favorite spot. Drinks and food ordered and delivered fast. We had lots of time to eat casually and get comfortable. They had a decent menu. Not a ton of options but a good variety. Some owners think they need 7 page menus. No you don't. The smaller the menu, the faster the cooks will be. We ordered Cheese Sticks and the Mezza Plate. Both were delicious. The food paired well with one of my favorite beer's, "Apocalypse IPA." AND it's a draft beer! Nice. So, had a few of those. The Wife was drinking vodka crans. She likes em. Me, ya, no. Corey B. was the headliner. I've been following him for a few year's now. He's super funny in person. The whole night was full of hilarious comedians. It was a really good night. My only other complaint would be Parking. It's all street parking. That part of town can be a little sketch but we've never had a problem. I think it's mostly Portland to blame. Helium isn't to far from Downtown PDX and downtown is definitely sketchy after dark. Just be aware of your surroundings in Portland. We're looking at some upcoming events to book. Maybe we'll see our friend Sarah on stage again. read more

I recently traveled to Portland over the weekend with a friend. She had never been to Portland before and I wanted to show her all the amazing things that make Portland such a fun place to visit. I decide to take her to see the Saturday night show -- Gavin Matts.  When we arrived, early, I was surprised that the only option the host gave us for seating was a shared table or a table off to the side. We opted for the side table -- no big deal because the cute theater is so intimate and we could still see the stage.  Fifteen minutes into the performance and I was regretting the choice. We could only see the stage if the performer was standing right at the front of it. The first comic totally did that. He was funny and I liked him. The next performer I couldn't see AT ALL. They stood back a little and was very hard to follow without the visuals of their body language and expressions. I was still hopeful at this point that the main act would stand at the front of the stage. The main act was a bust! We couldn't see anything because of the big wall obstructing the stage. It was like listening to an audio book of a comedy performance. I didn't even know where to look and just blindly stared out at the audience the entire time. :( The thing is, I'm sure that if we had the context of seeing his expressions and body language, I would have loved it and had fun. It was very disapointing.  I wrote this in an email and sent it to Helium. When I followed up my email with another very courteous email a few weeks later after getting no response -- still no response. Very bad business, Helium! I will not go back or recommend this business. Now I am reading all of the other bad reviews and it is all making sense. read more

Went for a cheap $13 comedy show, with the catch being everyone must buy 2 items from the bar to eat/drink. All the cocktails were weak including the mojito that tasted like it was out of a can with no real mint. The truly horrible experience was the food though!!!! The Philly cheesesteak was the nastiest driest thing I've ever tried to eat. No flavor, no moisture, and the tiniest amount of meat they could force onto a hot dog bun. The chicken tenders and fries are just the same you could make from home. The pizza pita for $15 was super duper tiny and straight trash like a kid made it. On top of that, they force pick your seat and squeeze everyone to be in each others laps the way they fit 4 people at a table for 2. Most definitely not safe for emergency exits. No A/C just a couple of standing fans that were insufficient. * Overpriced watered-down drinks * Enrance has no clear signage or instructions. Unclear (for first timers) that "will call window" is upstairs. You need to wait in line outside, then go upstairs to pick up tickets. Then wait in the bar area until they open the doors to the comedy room and hosts will seat you. * No advance info re meet-n-greets. They don't tell you until the end of each show (but if you ASK the staff they will tell you). * Reserved VIP seats are too close to the stage. You will literally strain your next looking up; awkwardly close to the stage. I purchased reserved seating and showed up early. My group was placed in the back along the side. Before being seated I asked about moving tables so we could have a better seat and were flat out told no. But people showed up late and got front row seating. One group even showed up after it started and a table was added right in front. It's not fair when there is only one price for reserved seating, yet other people after you get a better spot. Either start assigning tables at purchase or give to first come first served to be fair. My other issue with the reserved seating was that there were so many people walking back and forth, it was distracting. And the servers interrupt the show by closing out during the performance since it is a 2 item required purchase. There should be an option to pay via barcode or if tables were assigned ahead of time, you could charge the card on file. If I return to this comedy club, I will not be purchasing reserved seating again until they make some improvements. read more
