This review is long in coming since today was like the 5th time we have had brunch here. Rating is 4.5 to be accurate. Great spot on Smith Street especially for brunch. A sister restaurant to "THE" brunch spot on Smith. So while others are waiting up to 1.5 hrs for those pancakes...trust me head on over to Cubana Cafe. Food is delicious. Pancakes are DELICIOUS!! La espinaca omelette is amazing. CUBANA omelette is good but needs more chorizo.$6 mimosas and traditional latin dishes make this place a MUST. This little treasure might just have it all. First, the atmosphere is fantastic - very photographic, if that's what you're hunting for. Instagrammers look no further. You might, though, struggle to order as I did because you crave the entire menu. Not the worst problem a restaurant can have. Luckily the food lives up; I enjoyed a fresh salad while my friend dug into an enviable burrito. Also, I ordered a latte made with coconut milk and I've never been more excited about a latte. For this latte alone, I consider this spot to be a prime brunch location. I must offer a warning to LGBTQ+ folks: Perhaps dine here with caution. The man who I presume to be the manager or owner seemed consciously transphobic. There wasn't an issue until I noticed him sussing me out (if you know then you know) after which he consistently misgendered me in a way that... could've been accidental or could not have been. I'm not sure what to make of the whole thing, honestly. They do, though, have a single gender neutral bathroom (again, if you know then you know) which is cool. Whenever I see a guy who's attractive, I'll say, "My ovaries want that!" The same can be said for Cuban and steak sammies. This was the absolute worst Cuban food I've ever had in my life. I ordered grilled fish, which came tasteless and bland. I sent it back and had the chef remake my dish. He actually remade it twice and it was still awful. So instead of having the chef remake it a 3rd time I gave up and awkwardly pushed the food around on my plate. It felt like that moment when you're at a friend's house who is a horrible cook and you just can't bring yourself to 't tell them... only this time there was a bill involved. Really cute little Cuban place. I was gonna say quaint or pleasant or anything but 'cute' to be honest. But the place is cute, what can I say. Tables are small and I can see where this place could get crowded. Fortunately, we went at an off time - 2:30pm - on a Weds. so it was us and just a few other tables. The food seems to be traditional Cuban food fancied up a bit. I thought it was quite good. I had the pulled pork with yuca and red-onion relish. The dish was served with rice, no beans. Really juicy, tender pork, boiled yuca (I prefer fried) and a sweet relish. I liked it, but it lacked pizazz. Maybe a little heat or some sauce on the side. My cute (yes, I said cute again) gf had the ropa vieja which came with rice and beans. This dish had a little more umphh to it and was probably the better of the two dishes. Maduros and tostones on the side were perfect and came with a sweet mango relish. The gf also reported that her mojito was very good. As mentioned by other Yelpers, it's all cash. Also noted by other Yelpers, service started off a bit cool and to be honest I was put off by it. But by the end of the meal our server was very sweet and the good meal and ambiance had softened my mood. Wheelchair access: Not really. There's a medium-sized step, about 8" getting in. My gf asked the waitress to help by simply holding the door (we'd do the rest.) Let's just say, she wasn't eager to help. Maybe she thought we were asking for a 'lift' up the step, who knows. I think a place like this could easily have a small folding ramp they could pull out as needed without incurring any financial hardship. So yes, I got in with a little help - she did hold the door. I can't and won't call it accessible, but if you want to eat here don't let a step stop you. Who knows, maybe they'll see the advantage of getting a ramp. read more

I agree with Jeff O. - how are people giving this place great reviews? I understand that it might be better if you eat in than get delivery, but my experience was so laughably bad that I won't be giving Cubana another chance. Boyfriend and I ordered delivery while sitting at Bar Great Harry. Not being familiar with the neighborhood, we didn't realize that we were actually just a few doors down from Cubana Cafe, and should have gone to pick it up. But the weird thing was, they acted like they had no idea where we were when we called - we told them the intersection and the name of the bar, and they insisted that we give them the full address. So we assumed they weren't located nearby. An hour passed. I'm pretty patient with delivery times, but an hour is pushing it. We called, they said "Just a few minutes, we promise." Another 20 minutes passed. We were starving at this point. Finally a guy comes walking in with our food, apologizes for the long wait time. We're so relieved to finally have food. Until we take it out of the bag and look at it. It really did look like a tray of airplane food. I got chicken with mango salsa, rice and beans. The rice and beans were each a tiny, tiny portion, and the beans were so liquidy that the actual number of beans was insanely low. And they were both tasteless. And of course, after an hour and 20 minutes, completely cold. The chicken was so rubbery I couldn't cut it with the plastic knife and fork. The only thing remotely edible was the mango salsa, but after the long wait and a few beers, that really wasn't going to cut it as a meal. When we left, we saw how close they were, and the long wait and cold food became even more inexcusable. I usually don't give a crap about waiting, or bad service or anything, as long as the food is ok. But the food was total crap, they lied to us when we called to check in, and they took an hour and 20 minutes to deliver 2 dishes to a place 2 doors down from them. Blarg! read more

I will prefix this review to say, our orders were relatively simple meals and the restaurant was not crowded by any means. My friend and I decided to go to this restaurant for a chilled bit and drinks Friday evening. I arrived a bit earlier than my friend, I ordered tostones from a waiter before my friend arrived. My friend arrived, and a man, appeared to be the manager asked about our orders. My friend told the man her order, and I indicated that I ordered tostones and I will look at the menu further. The waiter came over, and I placed my order and the tostones arrived a few moments latter. The table next to us, ordered tostones and the plates, portion size, and presentation varies from us although we paid the same price. The man returns and asked if our orders arrived, my friend and I order did not arrived. The man became snappy, clearly had an attitude problem, when I indicated that my order did not arrive, he said all you said you ordered was tostones. I told yes, but I order something else afterwards from the waiter. He stopped off About 5 minutes later my friend got her order, then an addition 8 minutes latter I received my order. We started eating, things started to go smoothly. Then, the check arrived. I noticed that they scribbled over a receipt and the final amount did not add up correctly. I would also note, the establishment had a 4-6 tablets by the bar running Seamless, Ubereats, etc, but they didn't have a POS (as this is a cash only restaurant) for the restaurant itself. I informed the man, he seemed to be confused, had a bit of a attitude and said he would look into it. A few moments latter, he came back and mumbled that is calculated wrong and the updated total was at the bottom. I left the restaurant feeling a bit appalled and underwhelmed by this establishment, especially since there are several other good restaurants on the street. I can't believe people are giving this 5 stars. What a joke! We got delivery.. My dinner platter looked like it was from Boston Market. The beans were not bad, but there wasn't really that much in there. I could have probably counted 20 beans at most. The pollo in my arroz con pollo tasted like airplane food. The cuban sandwiches tasted good but were only a bit bigger than a sandwich from an standard supermarket slice of Italian bread. I won't be going back to investigate further. The first time I went to Cubana Cafe was for lunch. I ordered the shrimp "quesadilla" and to drink, a Havana special. I say "quesadilla" because it was more like a taco. It doesn't matter though because it was oh so yummy and spicy, good god. I washed it down with my Havana Special, a total candy drink but again, goooood. The quesadilla came with a little chickpea salad on the side, a mixture of chickpeas and cotija cheese, perfect for balancing the spiciness. We also ordered the jicama and green apple salad...it was huge! Enough for two people and very good, perfect for a warm day. The second time I went, it was for dinner and I ordered the exact same thing because I'm a sucker for a)shrimp and b)tacos. Again, it was just as good as the first time, which is a good sign in a restaurant...it means there's a consistency to the preparation and quality of the food. When we went for dinner, it was crowded, so be prepared for a wait, and yes, be prepared to sit elbow to elbow. I didn't mind though because the food is yum. I was so into my food both times that I can't remember what my dining companions ate. Oops. Update: I went for a third time, recently, again for lunch. I decided to order something different, so I got the chile relleno, stuffed with shrimp and calamari, with chipotle mayo. I wouldn't get it again. It was drenched...I mean, drenched, as in drowning, in the mayo. Underneath the mayo was a layer of melted cotija cheese, which would have been fine on its own but with the mayo, was just gross. The pepper itself was kind of warm but the seafood inside was cold. I couldn't find all the seafood since it was lost in the massive amounts of mayo. I got rice and beans on the side, which were goooood. My sister got the mango chicken (paillard-style, but not breaded) which was nice and spicy with tons of mango on top. I got the sangria this time around, and that'll be my new drink, instead of the Havana Special, which is really too candy to have with a meal. read more

I liked the food. It's flavorful, colorful, and covers pretty much the basic food groups. It's obviously no gourmet cooking but for me, the flavors remind me of comfort foods I grew up with. But my adoration for the place stops here. The place is cramped; so cramped, I'm thinking, you could listen to your fellow diners' conversation against your will! Lucky for us we went on a cold, wet Sunday afternoon. We were the second of 2 parties in the place. Even then, service was so slow. Or, maybe it was because of the waitress who had this super-aloof attitude. She seemed so vexed; as if she was just filling in for someone else's shift. She was obviously not happy about working there. She'd only come when called (and boy, do you still have to put a whole lotta effort to catch her attention) and yet, she would just be loafing behind the bar sulking even more. So, maybe next time, I'll try ordering take-out or will call for delivery (if they do that). That way, I avoid Miss Not-Happy-2-Serve-U and I will be able to enjoy my Cuban meal in peace. After some research, I have also found locations in Park Slope and SOHO. We stumbled into Cubana Cafe without the slightest clue what we were hungry for. I'm always down for Mexican/Cuban fare - so I was excited when our fickle minds made a decision on Cubana Cafe. Very casual atmosphere and standard service. I enjoyed the Cuban Sandwich - roast pork, sliced ham, swiss cheese, sliced pickle & chipotle mayonnaise ($7.50). It was standard but great. Perfect ratios of the two meats and cheese. The chipotle mayo gave it a perfect kick and with some added hot-sauce - my taste buds vivaciously approved. However, the coup de maître was the happy little Chickpea salad that was served with my sandwich. This tasty lil-treat was superior!! You can order a full-portion of this lyrical Chic Pea Salad with roast corn, tomato and lemon garlic vinaigrette ($6.50) and have your mouth singing in joy at first bite. Their Cubana sandwich is the best I've tasted with slightly crunchy bread crust like that of French bread. Generous amount of sauce coated the meat inside, allowing each bite to be just as flavorful. My wife ordered their vegetable burrito and it was refreshing and light. The second time I went back I decided to try their stuffed plobano chile. Sometimes you can be impressed and disappointed all in the same seating. When this happens I am much happier when the food is impressive and the rest disappointing. That is what happened during my random visit to Cubana Cafe on a Saturday afternoon. The place is supremely unimpressive from the plastic tablecloths to the two-tops literally jammed together. Possibly only Olive Oyl could sit on the bench side without moving a table to the side in order to get in there. Fortunately the place was not packed so I did not have to dine with two "new friends" who were basically sitting on top of me yet still at another table. The menu is full of interesting items and handwritten which I liked. But then there was a specials page, laminated and given, which made the place seem less independent and more potentially disastrous. With this intro, I put it all aside and still moved forward to the ordering portion of the meal. I had a pineapple cuban milkshake i.e. a Pineapple Julius which was excellent. Flavorful and frothy, it was a nice intro to the meal and a nice complement when the food came. With so many options, I went with a half Cuban Sandwich. The Cuban was well-made - the bread was toasted perfectly, the cheese melted the right way and the pork and ham was nice. Overall, this was a very decent Cuban. To go with the half-sandwich I added a side of coconut rice* and maduros, which were both very good. The food balanced out the kind of random service. The food came out quickly, but it was not easy to get the bill. However, this was not rude service at all, it was more just oblivious or working on their own clock. Overall, I would definitely come back here and enjoy the food again. ______________________ * I love coconut rice. I would do almost anything for it. My gf and I went here after a late show at the Cobble Hill Cinema. We'd had popcorn during the flick, but we were still quite hungry at 10:30 p.m. Your basic Cuban restaurant, the cafe is well decorated, and the menu highly inspired by Castro's isle. It was an appropriate place to try following his handover of power to his brother. I tried my hand at the roast chicken, which came with beans and rice. The chicken was excellent -- half a bird, cooked well, and neither too moist nor too dry. The beans and rice were also good. I recommend you blend them rather than eat them separately -- although the rice came complete with bits of corn and other vegetables. Tasty! My gf tried some sort of beef dish that was basically a stew with strips of beef in it. She says it wasn't that great, and she didn't eat much of it. I tasted it and thought it was fine, so it might have been a case of unmet expectations. Two complaints: The density of the seating -- all of the tables and chairs are extremely close together, and even if you sit on the edge of the front windows, you feel like you'll knock elbows with those sitting outside -- and the speed of the service. When we ordered, I ordered a mojito (my first!). It didn't arrive until after our food arrived and we were well into our meal. I might return to try their Cuban sandwich -- I'm a fan -- but otherwise, there are plenty of other places to eat! read more

No need to travel far from Brooklyn anymore to get a good Cubano. Cubana Cafe makes an awesome sandwich. The pork is tender and tasty, not tough like some other places I will not mention and big enough to share. They use a chipotle mayo and although it's not typical, it works well. I have made a complete 180. This place has steadily been raising their prices year after year. The steak sandwich that used to cost about $13.50 is now $17.50. Incredible! I cannot fathom how a restaurant has the unmitigated gall to raise prices by so much in a matter of 2 years. Other items on their menu have increased as well. I think they are thinking a little too highly of themselves. If they want to appeal to a high end clientele that may be looking for an expensive brunch, then fine. But I'm afraid their loyal customers will become less loyal when faced with the startling realization that Spanish food should not cost an arm and a leg. Decent Cuban food for a great price. I live right around the corner so the cheery bright blue restaurant always seems to invite me in. The happy hour specials here are great, and the drinks are nice and stiff. Great empanadas, average elotes (nothing beats Cafe Habana's), and huge mains. I tried the Buena Vista Pollo (thin pounded chicken topped with mango salsa) and wasn't particularly impressed with the dry piece of meat, but sticking to some of the more classic dishes like Ropa Vieja, Arroz Con Pollo and the Cuban Sandwich didn't disappoint. There were we were on a Saturday night, a bit strapped for cash but desperately in need of a solid meal and some good drinks. Cubana Cafe to the rescue! You swooped in, filled us up with delicious and perfectly cooked beans, scrumptious stuffed peppers, sweet plantains that dreams are made of (seriously don't skip these) and stiff drinks. So I've been coming here for a couple of years now and I just love the vibe. I just love the staff who are like family to me. The food here is sooo good and for practically peanuts you can east like a king or queen whichever you prefer. Mojitos...best ever. Loaded with lots of fresh mint! I think the taste does however exceed the alcohol content which is fine by me. Never pretentious and with a staff that awaits you with open arms.. this is truly perfect for a laid back, cool vibe meal. read more

Sometimes when a cuisine is underrepresented in a city the few restaurants are more like theme parks than places to eat. Cubana is clearly Cuban and even a teeny bit kitschy. Having never been to Cuba (or Miami) I can't vouch for the authenticity of the food I can only say that I have never had a bad meal here. The menu is pretty straight-forward with a lot of options for meat-eaters and vegetarians. Everything is wonderfully fresh and simple. The ambiance is cozy and friendly. I found the music a bit loud in the "porch" area but that is my only complaint about this place. Edited after another visit to say that the food isn't THAT great, tasty but nothing special. This time around I got the chicken with mango and it was literally a grilled chicken breast with cubed mangoes on it; absolutely boring and I only ate it because I required nutrition at the point in my day. My date had some pulled pork thing with whipped plaintains; the pork was good but we both agreed that the plaintains were so sweet as to be inedible. The sangria was good, as others have said, but eventually you will have to eat something to go with it. I doubt that I will go back to this place. Just like Trina R., I bounced across the road to Cubana after discovering that Chestnut is not open for brunch on Saturdays. The food is tasty enough, and the menu is full of yummy-sounding, unique options, but I have to admit that despite my excitement, my overall impression of the food was that it was only okay. But you cannot beat the price (I think we paid something like $14 per person including drinks), and the sangria was amazing ($4.50 per glass and also comes in a pitcher!). Plus, I really liked the decor, which was just kitschy enough to be cozy. Might not rush to eat here again, but I know where to satisfy my sangria cravings. read more

Came here with my friends. Great for dinner and drinks. Authentic food and I love the Havana feel. The area is nice for the summer time. Would definitely recommend for a small group to gather, eat and chat. read more

Tasty Mojitos! Sangria is decent, but not all fancified with fruit, at last not by the glass. Good prices for good Cuban eats, $4 for black beans and rice up to $10.50 for shrimp and calamari stuffed poblano. The sauces were flavorful and had more spice than many Cuban sauces. My palate is more accustomed to Mexican, and a lot of Cuban food can seem bland by comparison, but not here. Cash only. read more
