Just went again the other night. I always enjoy going to 1958. One of my favorite restaurants. The atmosphere is great and you feel like you're sitting in a restaurant in Havana having dinner. Luis the owner always seems to be there walking around visiting with the patrons making sure your experience is perfect. All of the staff are friendly and the host Iggy is great. The food is incredible and never disappoints. BYOB but they recently added local wines which is nice in case you forget to bring with you. This place is always a winner. Can't wait to go back.

Great spot to eat good Cuban. The customer service was very attentive and very professional. They do a very good job making empanadas so I'd recommend that. Also there was an oxtail appetizer that was memorable. I think the only complaint is when there a birthdays which happened 3 times during the duration we sat. Birthday Music was playing at levels where table conversation need to be halted. If you're a coffee person end the meal with a nice Turkish coffee with sweets to cap off the night. It's a BYOB but also BYOD (bring your own dessert). That was a joke - We actually bought a box of mochi donuts as a gift for my friends to be eaten at home but the waitress mistakingly thought we wanted to eat it at the end after our meal and plated the donuts for us and even added whipped cream to the plate for aesthetic effect. Super sweet of them to do so!

Wow what a great experience! As soon as we walked in the people were so friendly and had our table ready and waiting for us. The place was beautiful inside, a bit tight but very homie and comfy. The food was delicious! Everything taste so fresh and not too salty ! It was soo good. We had beef and chicken empanadas. I had ropa vieja and my boyfriend had arroz con pollo and it did not disappoint! We came with our baby girl who's one and they were so cool and accommodating! Parking across the street made it an easy experience. Can't wait to come here for lunch.

I finally visited 1958 Cuban Cuisine and it was very good. Right away, I was impressed with the exterior and interior decor. I also enjoyed their menus on individual electronic tablets and the attentiveness of the staff. FYI....this restaurant is BYOB, but they have wine bottles for purchase, which come from NJ wineries. Every item ordered was delicious. The Bistec de Pollo (Grilled Chicken Steak) was tender, moist, and the sides (Moro Rice & sweet plantains) were just as good as the chicken. The Empanada Rabo (Oxtail) was not greasy, the meat was tender and savory. For dessert, we had the Chocolate Hazelnut Cake and it was wonderful. Totally moist, throughout, and the hazelnut was not overpowering. I ended the meal with El Pecado (Espresso with a hint of condensed milk). This was one of my favorite espresso drinks and highly recommended. I highly appreciated, how the owner (Luis) stopped at our table, literally sat down with us, and we reminisced about our upbringing. We both grew up in Hudson County, NJ, and I'm glad that this restaurant made it through the COVID years. I wish 1958 Cuban Cuisine the best of luck, I'll definitely be a return customer, and hope everyone will experience it, as well.

Genuinely amazing Cuban food I wish I could inject the flavors in my bloodstream. Haha but all jokes aside, this is definitely an authentic Cuban restaurant, I am Cuban myself the flavors are absolutely parallel to my Abuela's cooking. I had Macitas de Puerco (Pork Cubes) & Lechon Asado (Roast Pork) and it was AMAZING!!. I came with my mother and we also ordered Chorizo al Vino as an appetizer as well. Our food had lerfectly moist congri, perfectly cooked platano maduro, tostones, and yuca con mojo as well. My mother had Shrinp in a Creole sauce that was soooo good as well! For dessert we had coffee & Guava Cheese empanadas. EVERYTHING WAS DELICIOUSSSS i cannot stress that enough!! (see pictures attatched) The managers & staff are so sweet and personable and willing to make conversation as well! This restaurant gives you a true Cuban experience full of amazing food, hospitality, and comfort. It may be a tad pricey but good food is worth it. We went around 3:45pm. Definitely pay a visit and possibly become a regular

So good my partner and I went back 2 Saturdays in a row. We are obsessed with the oxtails. So savory and delicious. I opted to eat my oxtails with just the sweet Plantains with the recent visit to reduce my carb intake because I always eat way too many bread with the guava butter ( made in house ) I highly recommend visiting if you're looking for a place to have dinner in the area. And the cherry on top of it all is there's so much parking across the street at the train station. I may have mentioned that in my previous review but it's worth nothing again

First time here and very impressed with the food. Very authentic and delicious. So good in fact I only got one picture. For starters we had the tostones de rabo...omg the rabo was cooked perfectly! We have the garlic shrimp which was good...nothing special but no problems. My family got the cubano empenadas and they said they were delicious. For entree I had the ropa vieja with white rice and yuca mojo. Even the whole rice alone was spectacular. Everything was perfectly seasoned and delicious. I was so full so I didn't even get to try the dessert but I will make sure to save room next time. It is BYOB which I wish I would have known but they have a couple bottles you can purchase and that was good enough to pair with their virgin sangria. My only one teeny tiny complaint is that I wish they had warm cuban bread instead of what we got because their guava butter was delicious but would have def been better with warm bread and a different loaf

(I've eaten at the Harrison location multiple times and have always enjoyed my experience there, but this Union location is noticeably larger while delivering the same great food and hospitality. Honestly, you can't go wrong with either location.) The moment you walk in, you're greeted by a colorful, lively atmosphere that immediately sets the tone. The centerpiece of the entryway is a rare 1920s classic blue automobile that commands attention and makes for a memorable first impression. The restaurant buzzes with energy, and despite how busy it can get, the service is friendly, attentive, and incredibly efficient. We started with several appetizers, and every one of them was a hit! The Canoas de Plátano featured sweet plantains stuffed with flavorful Creole ground beef and topped with perfectly caramelized cheese, creating an excellent balance of sweet and savory. The Tostones Montaditos were equally impressive. I tried both the skirt steak and smoked salmon versions, each served on crispy plantains with cilantro crema and fresh cilantro. Both were outstanding, but each offered its own unique flavor profile. The Queso Frito con Salsa de Guayaba was another standout, with the salty, crispy fried cheese pairing beautifully with the sweet guava sauce. For my entrée, I ordered the Ropa Vieja, a classic Cuban dish featuring tender shredded beef simmered in a rich Cuban Creole sauce. The beef was incredibly flavorful and comforting, exactly what you'd hope for from a traditional preparation. Alongside it, I enjoyed maduros, which were perfectly sweet and caramelized, as well as white rice and black beans that tied the entire meal together. From the vibrant atmosphere and impressive décor to the excellent food and top-notch service, Mambo's continues to prove why it's one of my favorite Cuban restaurants in New Jersey. If you're wondering if I'll be back? Yes, yes, a thousand times yes!

I'm not sure if it was because it was midweek or if the chef was simply off his game on this night, but the experience was disappointing overall. The first thing I noticed when I sat down was that my knife was dirty. I ended up taking another knife from a different table. The ambiance, as always, was wonderful, and there were only two other tables occupied, so the restaurant was not busy at all. They started us off with soup, and it was chicken noodle soup. I was honestly very disappointed. When I go to a Spanish restaurant, especially one like this, I expect something traditional like caldo gallego or a similar house soup -- not chicken noodle soup that I could easily make at home. For appetizers, we ordered shrimp in garlic sauce and calamari. Both were absolutely delicious and honestly the highlight of the meal. We also had to ask the waiter for bread, and when it finally arrived, we were each given one very small roll. Our main entrées were sautéed tilapia and shrimp in lemon sauce with mashed potatoes and string beans, and breaded veal cutlet Milanese with mushrooms in a wine and brandy sauce over mashed potatoes. Unfortunately, neither entrée stood out the way meals here usually do. The tilapia was sitting on a bed of mashed potatoes and absolutely swimming in lemon sauce. There was so much sauce that it completely soaked the mashed potatoes and vegetables. I could only eat the top portion of the fish. My husband also mentioned that his breaded veal was very oily. The waiter never returned to ask if we wanted anything else to drink. The water had no ice and felt warm. We also had to ask for additional bread. I'm used to bread being left at the table, not rationed piece by piece. When the waiter asked if we enjoyed our meal, I politely explained that I did not care for mine and why, especially since most of it was left untouched. He looked at me like I had ten heads. I truly hate writing this because this restaurant has been one of my favorites for years, but this visit just did not live up to the standard I've come to expect.

I appreciated the complimentary yuca fritters with special sauce, which was a kind gesture. However, the overall quality, freshness, and authenticity of the main dishes did not meet expectations. Parking is very limited street parking. The Cuban breaded steak was the biggest disappointment. A proper Cuban-style breaded steak should be thin, tender, savory, garlicky, slightly citrusy, well-seasoned, evenly breaded, and pan-fried until crisp and golden. The version I received tasted oddly sweet, the breading separated from the meat, and the steak had a gummy texture with an old-looking color. It did not have the freshness or clean savory flavor expected from this classic dish. The red beans were very concerning. They tasted strongly like vinegar, and I had to spit them out. When I looked closer, there appeared to be a white, murky-looking substance in them. Beans should never taste sour or vinegary unless something is wrong. Cuban-style red beans should be creamy, savory, aromatic, and well-seasoned with garlic, onion, peppers, cumin, oregano, and bay leaves. The white rice was also not acceptable. It was hard, did not taste fresh, and had a vinegar-like smell and flavor. It appeared as if older rice may have been mixed with newer rice. Proper Cuban white rice should be fluffy, clean-tasting, separated, and neutral in flavor. The moro with black beans and rice was better than the white rice, but still lacked depth. It needed more bay leaf flavor and stronger Cuban seasoning. A good moro should have a rich, savory base from sofrito, garlic, peppers, onions, beans, broth, herbs, and slow cooking so the rice absorbs the flavor. The oxtail was tender and okay, but it did not fully deliver the deep, rich Cuban-style flavor I expected. Traditional Cuban oxtail should be slow-braised with garlic, onions, peppers, tomato sauce, wine, herbs, and spices until the sauce becomes rich and the meat is deeply seasoned. This oxtail tasted acceptable, but it seemed as though it may have been prepared a day or two before and reheated. I understand that many restaurants legally prepare certain foods a day ahead, especially dishes like beans, stews, and oxtail. However, food should still taste fresh and be stored, cooled, reheated, and handled according to food safety standards. Sour or vinegar-like flavors in rice or beans can sometimes indicate fermentation, spoilage, or improper storage, and that should never reach the customer. The best part of the meal was the dessert. The vanilla flan was very good, and the coconut flan was excellent. The coconut flan was rich, creamy, and full of coconut flavor, with shredded coconut pieces that added texture and made it stand out. That dessert showed real potential. The prices were reasonable, but reasonable pricing does not make up for poor freshness and low food quality. It did look like they may do better with sandwiches and empanadas, which I did not try and perhaps should have ordered first. I cook Cuban food, Puerto Rican food, and other traditional dishes myself, and I lived in Miami for over nine years. I also learned from Cuban friends who cook authentic Cuban food at home. Because of that, I know how these dishes should taste. In my opinion, the dishes I tried did not represent Cuban cuisine with the freshness, authenticity, seasoning, or care it deserves. The restaurant may have people who know how to cook, but based on this visit, it seems the kitchen has lost some of the authenticity and discipline needed to serve fresh, properly prepared Cuban food. Food that tastes sour, vinegary, old, or questionable should never be served to customers. The service and desserts were the highlights, but the main dishes need serious improvement in freshness, food handling, seasoning, and respect for authentic Cuban cuisine. There are several areas that need improvement. Freshness and food safety should be the main priority. Rice and beans should never taste sour or vinegary unless intentionally prepared that way, and food that seems old or questionable should not be served. The breaded steak should be freshly breaded, crispy outside, tender inside, and properly seasoned with authentic Cuban flavors like garlic, citrus, cumin, oregano, and bay leaves. The rice should be fluffy, the beans creamy, and the oxtail deeply seasoned and fresh-tasting. I believe the restaurant may have cooks who understand Cuban cuisine, but the kitchen needs to reconnect with freshness, consistency, authenticity, and stronger food handling standards. Cuban food is rich in flavor, comfort, and cultural pride, and with improvement this restaurant could better reflect that tradition.

I wasn't a fan of the coconut shrimps sauce, it was too runny, not solid consistency at all. The shrimp itself didn't contribute much, so the sauce was what needed to bring it home.
