On Friday, 2/13, while visiting NY, we were looking for Puerto Rican cuisine after another Manhattan restaurant we planned to visit turned out to be permanently closed with no online update. We found Kiosko 787 while searching nearby options. We tried calling three times, but the phone would ring, play a greeting, and disconnect. Despite that, we decided to give it a try and arrived around 2:30 pm. The exterior was colorful and inviting, reminiscent of Old San Juan. Inside was smaller than expected but vibrant and cozy. The restaurant was empty except for one hostess on her phone. When we asked to dine in (party of five), she immediately asked if we had a reservation and told us reservations had to be made online. She explained they do not answer the phone as it's only for online orders and business information. After waiting a few minutes, she was able to seat us. Three people in our group had never tried Puerto Rican food, so we were excited to introduce them. We ordered drinks and the Picadera Sampler, which was excellent -- flavorful fried chicken chunks and delicious fried cheese. We finished the entire platter. For entrées, two of us ordered the Chuleta Kan Kan to share, and the other three also shared one, adding a mofongo as an extra side. The menu describes it as a "mega thick cut pork chop" and shows a large cut including belly and rib, which is why we chose to share. When the dishes arrived, the pork chops were normal-sized, thin, and nothing like the description or photo. We jokingly renamed them "Chuleta Can't Can't." The server dropped off the plates without knives or checking in and remained distracted on her phone. When we asked about the size, we were told the butcher sends different cuts. We asked about adding extra meat, but were told we would need to purchase another full entrée as they could not sell us a portion of meat, even when we asked if carne frita/pork chunks or a pork chop would be an option. The pork was thin, overcooked, and dry. The rice and pigeon peas were bland and heavy on tomato paste or sauce flavor. The mofongo, however, was moist and delicious with a garlicky butter sauce. Shortly after, another staff member brought out an additional pork chop that they "found in the kitchen," which was appreciated but also very dry. Given we were the only table (aside from one later customer), more proactive service and a heads-up about portion sizes would have helped manage expectations and given us the chance to order differently. The restaurant was also extremely warm. When we mentioned the heat, the response was dismissive. We really wanted this to be a great introduction to Puerto Rican cuisine for our friends. Unfortunately, the service and misleading entrée presentation fell short. The Picadera Sampler and mofongo were the only highlights and the reason for the 2-star rating. read more

One of the best aspects of living in New York City is the ability to have just about any cuisine right at your doorstep. Puerto Rican cuisine is one of those cuisines that is hard to find outside of Miami and, well, you guessed it, Puerto Rico. This little hole in the wall in Carroll Gardens amplifies the cuisine with authentic dishes and genuine service that is hard to beat, even if the dishes are expensive. Before I begin, I know very little about Puerto Rican cuisine. Other than that it contains a lot of banana, and meats from beasts of burden and seafood, there is not much I know. I settled for Pernil because that is a great dish to introduce anyone to the cuisine, like Chicken Tikka Masala to Indian cuisine. The food comes out fresh and tastes every bit of fresh too, but it needs a little extra flavor in the rice and beans. The pork is succulent and delicious. I am happy I saved it for last. I find it best you come before a busy rush. The food is good and this may be better as a takeout restaurant, but there is no way I am hauling this back on a 40 minute subway ride. The character of the food will disappear and maybe taking a star away from this review. For future visits I will educate myself and maybe get something more adventurous. Was a date night destination for my Mrs and I. However with the frigid temperatures in Brooklyn, we decided to order in with their local app. The food was excellent. Like many say, it was just like eating from my grandma's and titi's kitchen. The arroz con gandules was really good, nicely made. The alcapurrias were perfectly crisp, loaded with flavor and filling. The beef empanadas were great too, sorry I didn't grab a pic of them . Wife enjoyed the maduros very much. Now let's discuss the pernil. Nicely cooked, very well but slightly over seasoned but still very tasty. The texture was very likely fall off the bone style, so a lot of time and love was put into the pernil. But I'm guessing for time saving purposes in order to share, the pork was shredded, not something we actually do in our kitchens but understandable. Next time we get to go, hopefully we can get a nice piece of crispy skin. My original goal was for the Chuleta Kan Kan but was sold out so, next time. Food got to us in decent time, still nice and hot and prices were moderate but the food quality was well worth it. This place is absolutely terrible! I came here on my birthday, they said I had to reserve on OpenTable for an hour after which I did. I made the mistake of reserving for two instead of three and they told us we needed to wait another 45 minutes only to sit a Caucasian couple in front of us that seemed to have been asked if they had a reservation and nodded no, yet got seated immediately! I had a Puerto Rican cap on and am a nuyore rican and it was my birthday! The lady in the front made me feel outcasted, dismissed and disrespected! I could never have imagined that they would do this to people from their own culture!!! Shame on you! Here is my response to the owners prior comment and proof of harassment and disrespect. And before you ask, I have it all saved on my phone for evidence: Fortunately for me, you do not know how to control your impulses and called me twice after the review. Once from the business phone, and once from a cell 'calling me a 'so-called Bori', also texted me calling me the Nuyorican self entitled type', a 'so called Boricua' and even wrote in a comment to not come back and to Vete Pa... and left me the room to figure out the rest. I came here with my friends on a rainy day, and let me tell you -- this food was exactly what we needed to turn the day around. We started off with drinks: two passionfruit juices and one mango juice. My passionfruit juice was so cold, refreshing, and bursting with flavor that I had to stop myself from finishing it in two gulps -- it completely hit the spot. Next up, we shared some pastelillos (two beef, one beef & cheese). They came out piping hot, golden, and absolutely stuffed with the most flavorful beef I've ever had in a pastelillo. A solid 10/10. For our mains, we ordered the Arroz Mamposteao De La Casa and the Pollo Guisado. The arroz was a beautiful medley of chopped sweet plátanos, beans, pork belly, and more -- every bite was a whole new experience, and it was to die for. But my absolute favorite was the pollo guisado: tender, fall-off-the-bone stewed chicken soaking in a rich, savory gravy. I'm drooling just thinking about it! To finish, we shared a tres leches cake, and let me tell you -- this is the first time I've ever truly enjoyed a tres leches. Creamy, moist, and not overly sweet... trust me, this is your sign to order one. The vibe of the place is vibrant and cozy, with colorful decor that feels warm and welcoming. Seating is a bit limited, so I recommend making a reservation if you can. Walk-ins are fine too, but you might have to wait a little. I decided to try Kiosko 787 and ordered a quesitos, plain Mofongo, shrimp Mofongo, rice, beans and tostones to go. It's a very cute spot - love the decor. We were bummed when we stopped at a rest stop on our way to MD that they forgot utensils and mayo ketchup (I paid for extra two more). We got some forks and started to dig in. The plain Mofongo was good and flavorful. However the rice was hard and the beans needed more seasoning. My husband wasn't a fan of the shrimp, but liked the sauce and ate with the Mofongo. The tostones were okay, but the garlics flavor sauce did it justice. Quesitos were okay. I will go back for the plain mofongo. read more

Please be mindful there is no changing table in the bathroom so it's really not the most baby friendly space. We did still have a long wait for our table (about 45 minutes). The servers were not very kind or welcoming. We asked for a cup of hot water and she told us she could not give it to us initially.... we were taken back by this thinking how can you cook without having any hot water ? Then after a few explanations, the lady then said ok and brought us the water. We weren't sure what the issue was as it was a simple question as the hot water was needed to just place a jar of baby food in to warm up while we waited for our food. The food was good, however I do feel it was a tad bit over priced for the amount of food we received. The food came in paper dishes and we ate from plastic utensils as our appetizer plate alone was priced at $34. I feel if we are going to pay that much for a dish then better service and silverware would help set the mood. We asked for hot sauce and never got it. We ordered a flan and they originally gave us tres leches. When the server came she was hovering over us as we tried to provide feedback and the tip. There seems to be a disconnect from the severs and the customers. My family and I were looking forward to experiencing and enjoying a taste from my island on Easter Sunday. We were all quite disappointed to state the least. I came across this cute spot via social media. The videos and pictures were mouth watering. Therefore I did not expect the disappointment. The ambiance was cute, felt like I stopped at a spot on the highway in PR. However, the food not so much. The rice was not cooked all the way. The beans needed more seasoning. I get it, we can add salt and pepper as desired. However, approximately $40 per meal, total bill was $222, for rice, beans and fried pork/chicken, I shouldn't have to. I can get the same with a bigger portion for half the price and taster in my own neighborhood. The pork chop 'khan khan' was much smaller than advertised. Both the pork chop, chicharron de pollo and macitas, were all over cooked. I tasted a good amount of adobo but definitely missing acidity. The mofongo was very bland, and the 'sauce' to pour over, was nothing but olive oil, not much seasoning or tang. I can continue, but I think we captured the point. Although I do not mind spending or driving anywhere for food, I left feeling like I should've cooked at home instead of driving from Jersey to Brooklyn. Also, reading the defensive and condescending responses to the constructive criticism reviews from the owner, leaves little to be desired. I am hopeful they had a bad day considering some of the positive reviews. MAYBE I will give them another opportunity since PuertoRican restaurants are hard to find.
