In all honesty, it is hard to find fault with Cuda Ridge, either with the wines or the tasting room experience itself. The $15 fee to try five well crafted wines sourced entirely from Livermore Valley vineyards can be applied to a bottle purchase. The majority of the wines made are French-inspired Bordeaux red blends, plus Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Cuda Ridge also offers an American style Black Label series of wines crafted with a bit more fruit and new oak (Sangiovese, Syrah, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon). A third tier of Reserve wines are chosen from specific barrels and vineyard parcels for longer term aging and are mainly allocated to club members due to their limited nature. They likely won't be on the tasting menu, but you can inquire about purchasing them if quantities are available. The winemaker-owner at Cuda Ridge likes to let lesser varietals like Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc shine, and they are among the most popular wines with tasters for their rich fruit, deep colors, alluring aromatics, and lingering finishes. While I enjoyed these wines, I was smitten with the Cuda Ridge Merlot, sourced primarily from the One Oak Vineyard east of Livermore in the rolling foothills of Crane Ridge. The 2015 vintage ($32) I tasted had small additions (15% in total) of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot from the Smith Ranch Vineyard in the final blend, giving the finished wine extra body but still at a restrained alcohol level (13.9%) that enhances its food pairing possibilities, with an earthiness that added a savory, umami edge I especially like in red wine. It is one of the best Old World styled versions of Merlot I've tried in recent years: fruit and acid in near perfect balance with a long, clean finish, the kind of Merlot you need to taste to rekindle your on-again, off-again love affair with this often misunderstood noble grape. Next time, I'll ask about the current vintage of the Melange d'Amis, a reserve wine at Cuda Ridge inspired by the Merlot-dominant wines from the Right Bank AOC of Saint-Émilion. The tasting room, housed inside the winery, is relatively new and is quite spacious, with a small estate vineyard surrounding it on several sides. There is ample seating inside and out, and the winemaker, Larry D., is often present, giving visitors the chance to shoot the late summer breeze, while fat purple clusters of Petit Verdot ripen on the vines you walked past on your way from the parking lot to the main entrance. Inside you will find nice artwork, attractive wine glasses etched with the Cuda Ridge logo, conscientious, outgoing pourers, and fairly priced white and red wines in the $20-30 range, with reserve wines commanding a slightly higher price point above $50/bottle. You'll be able to join one of two clubs if you'd like to become a repeat customer and get access to special wines released a few times a year. Otherwise, pick a favorite wine or two, thank the winemaker for his superior efforts, and move on. Is a 2015 Cuda Ridge Merlot, Cabernet, or reserve red blend better than those made by Livermore Valley legends like Steven Kent, Wente, or Concannon? Do they deserve to come home from the San Francisco Chronicle's highly regarded annual wine competition with double gold? Are they 95+ point wines according to critics at WE, WS, and WA? Do they beat Sonoma, Paso, Mendocino, or Napa? Fortunately, I don't have to choose, to rank, to rate. Nobody pays me to write this stuff. I outgrew 100 point grading scales when I left high school, and medals no longer move me. Why should we subject talented adult winemakers to such childish ways? Why provoke needless jealousies, rivalries, and anxieties? Cuda Ridge reveals the quality of Livermore Valley wines in ways that invite comparisons with other prestigious places in California and beyond. But it's not an invitation you necessarily need to accept. Some things in life simply can be enjoyed, merely for what they are. read more

I really enjoyed our time here. We started with a semillon- which was interesting. Then we had a merlot (with a delicious complimentary turkey open face tasting "sandwich"), a malbec and a cab. Cuda Ridge was a stop we would refer to as a must do! We started with a Sauvignon Blanc which led into a Semillion.. We preferred the latter of the two however their superstars are the reds. Big bold easy drinking breads, we found the Malbec and Cabernet Franc to be the standouts. We visited Livermore Valley last weekend to celebrate a birthday. We visited several wineries with friends that live in the valley. They are members at Cuda Ridge so we visited and really enjoyed the red wines. Larry was a real pleasure and his son Neil sampled some wines with us. The wine should get 5 stars, the 4 stars reflects the grounds at the location which isn't as nice as Darcie Kent or Murrietta's Well for example. Apparently Livermore, CA has Wine Wednesday where one winery is open until 8pm and they have music as well. Lucky for me, Cuda Ridge was that winery the week I was in town for work. I went with 4 other colleagues and we walked into the tasting room which was kind of small. I was a little disappointed that they weren't doing tastings that night, since i wasn't sure what I would like of theirs, but I got over it. We opted for 2 bottles of their Cab Sauv. One was reserve and one was their regular. They both were very tasty and we were all happy with our decision. We sat outside on their patio and it was so nice to look at the vines and watch the sun set. This winery is one that I would definitely come back to visit and hopefully I'll be able to taste more of their wines next time. read more

Came in to do a little wine tasting from out of town. Started off well, then realized this place is pretty snobby. Ended up leaving with a bad taste in my mouth with the realization of the staff rolling their eyes at customers that weren't aware they were doing it and also the fact they tried to not notice they didn't pour my last pour that was paid for. We have been a member of Cuda Ridge Winery for many years. They produce some of if not the best red wines in Livermore, a hubby favorite is the Petite Verdot. Today I was compelled to write them up, THEY WERE FABULOUS! We went to our first club tasting post Covid and I felt extremely comfortable. I wasn't sure how I would feel, even with reservations but there were no worries. It felt like old times, with new processes but everything they did were steps in the right direction, steps I hope others do so we can experience a fun #newnormal and start getting out of the house without the fear. I also saw things I think restaurants can mimic. When we arrived we were greeted and pointed in the direction of tables and told to pick the table we wanted to sit at and someone would be with us shortly. They explained how it would happen and the coolest thing was the QR code but if you don't have that app on your phone, your phone camera will give you the URL to visit. The website was our pairing and wine selections. This could be how restaurants save money on printed menus and have everyone use this QR code method and not have hard copy menus, ingenious :). It is kinda like how some restaurants have a tablet but this is a way to let people use their own devices. We were brought our first tasting in a glass and subsequent tastings were delivered in these cute little mason jars to share and pour into your existing glasses. Our food parings were also delivered by the food truck caterers. It was all very seamless and I want to thank Margie, Larry & Annie for making this a relaxing taste of what #newnormal can be for now but making it feel like a better normal; I loved it and will be making future bottle table reservations. It was a lazy Friday afternoon with my Mom in town for a few days so I took the day off and Mom, wife and I hit a couple wineries. I like the fact that Cuda Ridge has the grapes surrounding the tasting room you feel in the middle of a working winery, not just a vintner. The day was beautiful and the wine was delicious. We shared two tastings between the three of us and did not buy a bottle but the service from the staff member never went cool as happens some times. We told him we were new to the area and he pointed out some other wineries to try and some information about the region. It was a very nice experience and my wife and I will surely be back.
