I will be honest in starting this review off by stating that I'm a life long, die hard fan of Dairy Queen®. I hail from Ohio originally, so would you expect any less? To cut to the chase, I discovered tart yogurt about a year ago and while it was only a spoonful, I fell in love at first bite. As most people are likely familiar with the pattern developing in Brooklyn, tart yogurt is all the rage. At the end of the day, what sets one yogurt shop aside from the other are the toppings. If you do not have a small Dixie® cup handy to catch your drool, you better go get one. What sets this small mom and pop shop apart from your 16 Handles and Pink Berry is the incredible menu of topping options. In addition to being a house-made, soft-serve, antibiotic-free, hormone-free local milk, they also offer up 4 rotating, unique house flavors. Of course there are the expected cookie crumbles, fresh berries and more, however, what you will take in first is the eclectic array of options including their "Key Lime Pie." The way in which the yogurt is dressed in the cup is worth the money alone. Beginning with adding the graham cracker crumbles to the cup as a base then yogurt which is finally topped off with topped with a tart key lime custard and yet, more of those amazing graham cracker crumbles. This is just one of the amazing options offered. Some other sundaes you should check out include "Vermont Maple Syrup" and "Strawberry Balsamic." Go ahead, indulge yourself Brooklyn, your thighs will forgive you just this one (or two) times. read more

Savoring this frozen yogurt after frequenting conventional, no-name Pinkberry rip-off spots... I think to myself, what have I been putting into my body up until this point? You can taste the freshness of its ingredients. It's not overpoweringly sweet. It's not too expensive either. I usually pop in here on my way home from schlepping groceries at the Park Slope Food Coop. It's a nice breather after walking so many blocks, with my arms are crying out for help. After my second trip to Culture today, I realized it was time to yelp. This afternoon, I visited Culture for their fresh, skim yogurt with honey and chocolate chips. This week was my first time trying the non-frozen yogurt, and now it only gives me more of an excuse to go there twice in one day! Tonight, I shared the usual with my husband - frozen original yogurt with caramel and oatmeal raisin cookie. As always, a simple stroke of genius arranges the caramel and cookie bits both underneath and on top of our yogurt. Culture's yogurt tastes like love. And sometimes like mango, or blueberry pie, or coconut lime, or mixed berry, to name a few. The owner clearly puts her heart and soul into the shop. Not only is the yogurt amazing, but the space is clean, charming, and a perfect place to sit and enjoy the fruits of her labor (literally). I love Culture. read more

This Place would have gotten 4 or 5 stars if it wasn't for the "C-U Next Tuesday" working behind the counter. My ice cream was a melted gelatinous blob... I waited very patiently behind the two 12 year old girls digging for change in their back pockets until my turn where I asked nicely if I could possibly have my sundae made again with the regular yogurt. She explained the strained yogurt was softer and very loudly in so many words said "I can throw it out if you don't want it." She took, two seconds to make me a crappy second... Then boasted over my shoulder to the people behind "I'm so sorry for the wait!" While I got cash out... Listen, this place has great product. BUT THERE IS NO NEED FOR THE ATTITUDE. I HATE that... Drop it. seriously. Its a Monday for gods sake, lets not get our panty's in a wad. I wish I had more cash so I could have given her a nice FAT tip. Be nice next time. Am I being a meanie if I say I just don't get what people are so excited about? Ok, yes, their stuff is definitely healthier than regular frozen yogurt. It's made from live probiotic cultures and low-fat and skim milk. And it's all-natural and organic, of course. It is in Park Slope, after all. And as long as you don't load up on unhealthy toppings, you don't have to feel guilty about eating it in the least. But I don't know. I'm all for healthy, all-natural, organic options. I do live in Park Slope, after all. But I think they've gone too far with the health-food kick. It's super bitter. It's just not fun. It almost tasted like it was going sour. When I want frozen yogurt, I was frozen yogurt. I want it to be sweet and creamy and delicious. This yogurt just made me sad. read more

Ok, look: I CANNOT STOP EATING THIS STUFF. And I am a major fro-yo person...I've pretty much tried every fro yo out there in both Manhattan and Brooklyn and nothing even comes remotely close to Culture. I can't even describe what this stuff tastes like, because trust me: you have no point of reference. You have never tasted yogurt this good, anywhere, E-V-E-R. I'm usually not a fruity yogurt type person, and yet every time I taste the Culture flavor-of-the-day, I discover a new love for white peaches...or blood oranges...or mango! I honestly don't even like mango, but for some reason, I'm in love with their mango yogurt. The organic chocolate yogurt is so good it should be illegal. Their toppings are also not to be missed. I tried the seasonal blueberry pie today on the organic whole milk strawberry yogurt, and my head was spinning. The best part about their toppings is that they layer them! They put some on the bottom of the cup AND on top...which, in my opinion, amps up your yogurt eating experience x a billion. This is, hands down, my fave new Park Slope business of the summer. I admit it, I am a dedicated member of the froyo trend, and Culture is by far the bestest of the best froyo I've found. They have just the right ratio of tangy and sweet to my tastes, and I've only ever experienced total darlings at the counter. Be sure to get a punch card, try the flavors, and don't forget about the kid's size. My fave flavor: original with chocolate chips (they coat the bottom of the cup with the toppings so you don't get stuck with naked bites) + bathroom! read more

Oh. my. stars. I'm a 16 Handles addict, even though I recognize that it's not the most natural or healthy option out there for frozen yogurt. I go gaga over having a wealth of topping options to choose from. But Culture has stolen my heart. Culture isn't cheap - it's more pricey than other fro-yo places, but that's because of the TLC put into making their epic yogurt. A small cup has to be damn good to satisfy someone that's as freakishly in love with frozen yogurt & ice cream as this girl. i've gotten kids' portions, after two massive dinners where I knew that I was going to overstuff myself if I ate just one.more.bite, because I simply couldn't walk by without popping in. The pina colada combo with chunks of pineapple and coconut macaroon, topped with caramel, is a winner, but the Key Lime pie is a real standout. Get it with raspberry if that's the flavor of the day - the combo of key lime curd, graham cracker and tart, juicy berry flavor is unreal. Cleary, I'm a fan. read more

I love the topping here and the staff are super friendly. Why it is so good is that I like that they place the topping at the bottom of the bowl too so you get a bite of topping all the time. To start off, the frozen yogurt is just so good. What's great about the selections is that they have daily flavors that constantly varies. Their varieties never go wrong even though the names of the flavor might make you go ew sometimes. Other times, you're just left wondering, 'wow, they made that flavor?!' In a good way of course because I've tried several flavors that resemble deserts and I am left in awe of how good it tastes and how much it tastes like the actual desert- except cold and frozen. Another goody, they usually sell old flavors in containers at lower prices so you can stock up on it at home. Came here after having seen their Vermont maple on the Cooking Channel's unique sweets. I've had a lot of fro-yo at the chain places but this was unexpectedly awesome. There are not more than four flavors to choose from but they are so silky and artfully prepared that tart 'original' is even a winner. It would be a mistake not to GET VERMONT MAPLE, which brings their froyo to a whole new level. It's a delicious and warm maple-meets-caramel sauce with chunked walnuts which pairs awesomely with tart strawberries and 'original' froyo. The dark chocolate raspberry was also amazing..but it wasn't available the other times I want back. Bottom line, ditch Pinkberry or 16Handles and try this place out. read more

Cute little place open late. Culture makes tart yogurts - I'll disagree with James B. here (can I mention LA is glutted with froyo? I know my tart, dammit) - and carries few flavors at a time, relying instead on having you customize your dessert with any combination of a couple dozen toppings. They're generous with the toppings, which is always a bonus; they even throw some in the bottom of the cup to make sure you don't run out too quickly, which I really appreciate. You get one topping automatically with your order, which is nice. I picked the seasonal yogurt flavor, pumpkin, topped with dark chocolate sauce, and got to try my companions' tart yogurt with a seasonal topping, apple crumble(!). My yogurt was fairly swimming in chocolate sauce (not complaining), and although tart, the yogurt still maintained a spiced pumpkin flavor. The tart was too tart for me, but the apple crumble topping was delicious. The fellows working there were as nice as could be, although said that they weren't allowed to dance (the music was all dancey), which is a shame. It's totally possible to dance and work simultaneously. Overall, since I'm not into tart yogurts, this probably isn't the place for me, but with their commitment to healthy/local ingredients, friendly employees, and delightfully thorough list of topping choices, I'd recommend Culture to people who like tart desserts. read more

OMFG! Organic whole milk yogurt that's made on the premises! (They have skim too if you think milk fat is worse than all the sugary toppings you know you are going to put on it.) Real whole milk yogurt stands on its own with nothing added! Delicious! Creamy, fatty, tangy delicousness that reminds you of why buying lame fat-free yogurt with pie filling on the bottom of the container will never compare to real fresh, plain home-made yogurt. And the frozen yogurt is excellent. Made with real sugar and not corn syrup or some other fructose-based sweetener. If you know how amazing fresh yogurt is, you should go check out Culture. Actually, if you have no idea what I'm talking about, you NEED to go taste what you've been missing. You will reflect on your deprived childhood and will wonder whom to blame for having so neglected your need for fresh, home-made yogurt. I hope foodies of Park Slope discover this place and keep them super busy because real, fresh wholesome yogurt like this is not so easy to find as a jaded NY-er might think. Love love. Love love love. If you're going simple, try fruit on an original flavored yogurt, or graham cracker crumbs on one of the special flavors. OR try one of their all our toppings. My favorite this spring was the strawberry rhubarb pie: strawberry rhubarb compote with pie crust pieces. Best part! They put toppings on the top AND bottom of the cup, so you never get to the end and wish you had more of the good stuff. Watch for long lines, even late at night, and a ton of kids, but the line moves fast and the employees are super nice. Their original flavor is pretty great, but they'll give you free samples of all the flavors of the day if you ask. Gotta love small, local businesses. Lovely place for yogurt. And overall a wonderfully great place to come for yogurt. First, the space: lovely, spacious and just feels so inviting to sit at. I've been to a few yogurt places overall and I just love how this place just makes it so comfortable for you to sit and enjoy your dessert. The staff is always really friendly and accommodating - so they also get a huge thumbs up from me! But who cares about that? How's the yogurt? Great! They have rotating flavors as well as specials altogether. My favorite that I've had here was their Red Velvet special, with my favorite toppings. YUM! read more

The frozen yogurt at Culture is wonderfully tart, fresh, and delicious...much better than Pinkberry, Red Mango, or the other similar yogurt chains in the city. My standby is the plain yogurt with fresh strawberries...I love that they put the berries on both the top and the bottom of the yogurt. Delicious. I was curious about what Culture does during the winter months, so I decided to stop by for breakfast on a chilly Sunday. I discovered that they offer fresh strained yogurt- neat! I tried their special, which was a small yogurt parfait and small coffee. Honestly, I wasn't impressed with the fresh strained yogurt- I found it bland and even with the granola, strawberry topping, and syrup, I thought it was just okay. However, if you're into the locavore movement, this yogurt would be in line with your philosophy. The staff was still nice, so yay for that. Part II I'm loyal froyo fiend, so I was back here over the weekend to eagerly get me some froyo. As froyo fate would have it, the machines were being cleaned and rumble rumble went my tummy. However, the woman manning (or womanning?) the store was super duper friendly and gave my friend and I complimentary froyo for our wait. I ordered the Vermont Maple with blueberries. Basically, plain froyo with vermont maple syrup and nuts. It was syrupy, sweet goodness. The plain froyo was definitely fresh tasting and knowing that they make everything in-house has the green part of my heart all a flutter. Oops. A few days after my first visit to Culture, I made the mistake of going to 16 Handles. Now I think I've turned into a yogurt snob. Culture's plain, tart yogurt is so fresh and creamy, perfect by itself but better as a palette for one of their creative toppings. When it comes to froyo, I prefer to get my sugar fix by way of a sweet, oozing sauce rather than a flavored yogurt. Plain yogurt + one topping is the way to go. I've only tried the Vermont Maple topping (so good, but so sticky...use plenty of napkins!), so I'll be back to make my way across the toppings menu. Also, anyone can order the "kids" size. Pretty awesome frozen yogurt. I knew I was in for a treat when I saw the door to the kitchen open up and noticed there was a guy with a bucket of freshly made yogurt ready to be scooped into the machine. The original yogurt had great consistency and flavor. The strawberries were fresh and I was delighted that my yogurt was not only topped with strawberries, but there was also a bed of it at the bottom. The only issue I was I felt like the cashier gave me a little bit of sour attitude when she asked "Is that it?" and I answered, "Yeah." She then said "Well, I don't know what that is," and started what appeared to be mockingly looking into my yogurt cup... That sour attitude couldn't do anything to detract from how delicious the yogurt was though! read more

It is seriously too close to my apartment, which is about all I can find to say bad about the place (because that's also a good thing). I am a yogurt addict and this place won my heart. I came here after work to treat myself and I see a creative flavor every day. The froyo here is creamier and denser than your average froyo stations. The original tart is delicious and refreshing, but it's flavors like cherry almond (with dark choc sauce topping), watermelon cilantro, strawberry rhubarb, pear ginger.. etc that really makes this place stand out. Not to mention the delicious and wonderful toppings they offer. It is a little expensive but totally reasonable (one free basic topping with every order!). But just a note, this place is mostly filled with toddlers and their moms all the time. There is more of a rant but I'm so tired of seeing new generic self serve froyo place opening up. Culture has amazing product. For those who love greek-style parfait, this is the place for you. For those who haven't ever tried greek-style yogurt, then this will will be a nice foray into the world of artisinal yogurt. And for those who just simply love frozen yogurt, it will not get more pure than this. I tried four different versions including the tangerine frozen, the key lime pie frozen, and then the regular yogurt with wet nuts and blueberry, and the pina colada regular that had a macaroon on the bottom. Each one was distinct and special in their own right, and it was difficult to pick which one was my favorite. I especially loved that the maple syrup was fresh as well as the fruit and everything tasted refreshing. There was a perfect blend of smoothness, and creaminess, with just enough bitter taste, so I could tell that a lot of care had been put into this batch. They definitely know what they are doing. The space is also beautiful and the owners are so pleasant. Clearly they are working hard so I think that hiring people to work for them is helpful, despite the initial challenges of training them and ramping up. I will definitely go back. read more

Yogurt here is okay. This place is another cult of Brooklyn though--the praise is completely disproportionate to the quality/cost. As with any yogurt place, frequently all flavors just regress to 'sweet'. Oh, this is apple pie? Tastes... Sweet. Is this lemon meringue? Lovely. I don't taste lemons, but it certainly is... sweet. Relatively expensive, though again, this is Brooklyn--there's almost no sensible basis for comparison. I just got upcharged for picking a certain flavor in my two flavor, small serving--the same upcharge as if I'd gotten a large. A small serving with one topping shouldn't cost $7, yeah? Honestly, don't even bother going here. The 8th St location in the city is a million times better: more variety of flavors, better quality of yogurt, better presentation, and fresher fruits. Service is fine, but the overall yogurt itself is just .. not it. There's a lot to be desired. Go to the West Village location! Dear god, I adore any place that bills frozen yogurt as a meal. I mean, they open for breakfast. And the thing is, I believe that it's actually good for me. What makes this clean cut yogurt joint unique is they make all their yogurt in house and freeze it the very same day. Flavors are fun and seasonal, so I recommend always trying something new. Topping are also made in house and you probably should probably just go with the oatmeal cookie and thank me later. So I made my way to the raved about Culture. Their flavors change on a daily basis and because today's sounded appealing, I decided to head on over. I got the lavender wild berry which didn't have much of a taste. It tasted mostly of lavender (if that) with a slight wild berry aftertaste. I kept taking more bites to see if I would finally taste some sort of flavor but eh, totally underwhelmed. For a topping I settled on their famous blueberry (pie) one, which ended up being a few not-well-thawed blueberries with a slight dusting of crumble, which barely had a taste. Now the blueberries were said to be fresh. Puhlease! I then thought I'd get their Nutella-flavored one. Thank goodness I tried a sample this time because it was so disgusting. It tasted like sour chocolate milk--not even like Nutella. FINAL VERDICT: I think they need to be cultured on what good frozen yogurt is. read more

If you haven't been here and live nearby, what are you waiting for?!? Culture is delicious, refreshing, packed with probiotics, and unique flavors to keep you coming back regularly to try them all. Blood orange, lychee, triple berry, and original are some of our favorites. Their regular Greek yogurt is also amazing. It's super creamy with the perfect amount of tang (which isn't a lot). Even our pup enjoys a bit of the original froyo and loves the regular Greek yogurt as an occasional treat--she loves it so much that she usually tries to plant herself in front of the shop as we walk by in hopes we'll stop for a treat. During the peak of the pandemic, we'd regularly stopped by for a pick me up and happily ate froyo bundled up outside in 30 degree weather.
