    Driver #204

The drivers are typically incompetent. They either crank up the heat, or the air conditioning. They are incapable of finding a middle temperature for the comfort of passengers. Today, 2-12-20, the 6 Rapid, southbound, about 1:50 pm, driver number 204, bus number 7115; I asked him to please talk to a passenger (who did not pay the fare), to turn down his loud music. The driver refused. The drivetrain on that bus sounded like a coffee grinder, ready to fall apart. CC bus needs to perform better maintenance on their buses.

I'd like to thank the Culver City and Santa Monica Big Blue buses for providing me an alternative to renting a car. Come on... $30 / day versus $1.50 / day = major dinero I don't need to be spending. There isn't much of West Los Angeles you can't get to using the combined transits of the Big Blue and the Culver City buses. From UCLA to LAX via Culver 6 requires only one bus. $0.75 one way. Door to door service. There's always plenty of room on the buses. The only people who are standing are the ones who choose to be. But there are moments of congestion during peak hours when people are on their way to work or getting off work and heading home. In that case... have your mp3 player handy and meditation helps. You might have to prepare yourself for abnormal body odor (especially on rainy days --- some wet people smell worse than wet dogs) and people who take up 1.5 seat spaces. On my way to work one day, the bus got unusually crowded and seats were limited. Then entered, this larger than average lady who decided to sit next to me and spilled over to my side. Yes... spilled over. She was hanging over to my space. Her arms were pressed onto mine and our spares met in mid-air. Not the most pleasant experience I've had in my life, but I was willing to deal with it. But as our journey began, she slowly became "comfortable". With every turn, she nudged closer and closer and pressed herself against me. I fought the urge to tell her to back off. And trying to be the gentleman that I am, I tried to sit very still and not offend her by re-adjusting my posture. I kept thinking of my exit and counted off the remaining stops. But of course salvation only came one stop before mine when the pudgy lady exited. I finally had my space back and for one last stop, I was enjoying the hassle-free commute.. Mind you, this experience has not hindered my opinion of the Big Blue and the Culver City buses. They're great for getting around in West LA. I highly recommend it and it could be a good break from commuting. Not to mention, gas prices are now above 3 bucks a gallon and rising.

I live in the MTA (Metro) service and Santa Monica Big Blue bus service areas, so I have enough information to compare.

There is no downside to the Vanpool! The service is tailored to UCLA faculty and employees, so the…read morehours are necessarily work day hours. For example, I took the van all summer from Arcadia (about 35 miles east of Westwood), and we left at 6:40 every morning and arrived on campus at 7:30. We left campus at 5pm and got home at 6pm. The bus drivers are nice, as are the other riders (everyone chats a little), and everyone's really responsible about letting others know their ride schedules and what days they plan to show up. If you ever need to ride to UCLA on a regular basis, this is absolutely the way to go. The "part time" tickets (basically one way pay-per-ride tickets) are a little expensive relative to the monthly fees, but still less expensive than the cost of gas. Plus, both rides are much faster than driving myself. This service is for responsible people. We have never been more than five minutes off schedule, so there is definitely no waiting around for people to come. Make sure you're on time! The only trouble right now is that there seems to be too few vans. I guess it's impossible for UCLA Transportation to have half-filled vans full of part time riders, but know that as a part time rider you're not always going to have a seat. It's best to check with the driver(s) the night before. And it gets really cold on the vans, which I love but understand that some people hate. All in all, love this service. It's perfect.
