My boyfriend and I were lucky enough to have a private session with him and we ended up staying almost 4 hours cooking, eating, and chatting. The format of the class is refreshing compared to other cooking classes. For one, you get to bring mystery ingredients (we brought greek yogurt and avocado), and Chef Karl will decide the menu based on what you brought and what's in his pantry (the options are vast!). Secondly, you do all the cooking - Chef Karl is a great teacher and rather than tell you what the ingredients in a dish should be, he asks your opinion of what might go well and brings your suggestions into the dish. As an amateur cook, I actually felt like I was learning something I could takeaway and recreate at home. With our ingredients, we made a delicious chilled avocado soup with pomegranate juice, lemon juice, and some spices. Then, we created pork meatballs reduced in red wine topped with pink sauce, which is greek yogurt mixed with chili spice (our favorite). For our main, we did lightly breaded fried rabbit Harlem-style and braised bok choy. Finally, we ended with a bananas flambee using greek yogurt instead of ice cream for a healthy option. Chef Karl provided a beautiful Chianti with our meal and gave us our leftovers to take home. An all in all wonderful evening. Would highly recommend!

Because of their training I feel very comfortable allowing them to try new recipes. Chef Toni is extremely kind and patient with the kids, and they have the best time with her! This place is clean and has plenty of work station for a class. I was in a class of 8 but they can fit much much more. The kitchen offers classes almost every night and I heard they get booked packed most of time. Check their website for more information on what classes available and great date idea. So far I learned to make cookie, pita bread and hummus. I ate plenty of them but never know how to make it. They are pretty time consuming. Overall a great experience and had ton of fun.

The class size is small so it's intimate and friendly and cooperative. We all sat / stood around a central island. The instructor was very friendly and helpful, and each person got hands-on guidance. The group was small, just 6 people, so we got almost a private class. Entire class was well planned and organized. Each of us got some hands-on stuff to do, we asked questions, took notes, enjoyed our meal, yet we ran exactly on time. John provided a lot of information not just on specific dishes we cooked, but also on Thai cuisine fundamentals, ingredients, and main tastes. He also shared some cool cooking tips we found useful though we are not cooking beginners. We ended up with a plentiful freshly made Thai dinner consisting of Tom Yum soup with Shrimp, Fried Fish in Tamarind sauce, Thai Red Curry Chicken, and sticky rice. All the dishes came out delicious and tasted like in a Thai restaurant! And most important we've successfully reproduced these dishes at home one week later! She gave us the option off adding heat with a scotch bonnet pepper and showed us a couple of knife techniques to make cutting vegetables easier. We were supplied with aprons and name tags and worked in teams and chatted while chopping, seasoning and cooking. I appreciated the ice water and stools available to ensure I was comfortable for those hours of class. The food came out amazing and flavorful and there was plenty leftover to take home. It takes a week for me to finally call again and we get our credits back, book another class and we're good to go right? NO! Class gets canceled again 3 days before the class is going to be held. Steph, the cooking instructor is a recipe blogger in NYC and developed the idea to provide cooking classes in her own apartment. This way, New Yorkers can learn to cook delicious meals in their tiny, less than welcoming kitchen(ettes.) Steph's apartment is also a very unique space and sits at the very peak (literally) of a tall corner building. The space itself is small, but she has an enormous outdoor patio with beautiful views. The second unique part of this class is that Steph worked to recreate dishes from famous NYC restaurants and gives you the recipes at the end of the class so you'll be able to try them at home. Each class has a different menu, but my class featured: US Open Melon Cocktails Serendipity Frozen Hot Chocolate Jean-George's Tuna Tartare (my personal fav) Momofuku Brisket Buns Levain Chocolate Walnut Cookies (we didn't actually bake these, but she sent us home with some and the recipe) I recommend this class for any foodies, New Yorkers, couples, roommates, a Mother's Day gift, a bachelorette party, a divorce party, or anyone that wants to see how NYC Cookin' works.

When you call them and ask about these classes (which have run forever) you are told that they are not offering any or that they have been cancelled. What they do not or won't tell you is that the company that ran the New School Culinary Arts program, Culinary Center of New York, is now running the same cooking and baking classes under its own name. They were supposed to issue a joint press release about the separation but nothing was done. Was it a deliberate ploy to deny the new venture any publicity? Is The New School trying to drive the Culinary Center of New York out of business by misdirecting people? Are New Yorkers to be denied the cooking and baking classes they love and are used to-- same facility, same teachers, same everything?

My friend went in to the store to try it first and was bragging about it so much that I had to try it for myself. I was not disappointed! I ordered a few mini pies to go while in store. I purchased blueberry crumble, three berry crumble, sour Cherry crumble and apple crumble. My top two favorite crumbles thus far is Sour Cherry and Three berry. The crust is handmade and a good on its own. The fruit is sweet but not overdone and the crumble is what really makes the pie delectable! The service was quick, easy and pleasant. The pies are made fresh daily and from the few times I went in, always readily available. They are packaged neatly with an ingredient label on the front. The ambiance of the store is cozy and historic. I say historic because if you look closely you will see aged treasured recipe books, tools that shaped modern baking techniques/technology and vintage bake shop signs. Each recipe book more than likely has been passed down through generations and tools that touched many hands to make these delicious pies. From the photos below it's a rustic shop. There is no seating available, it's more of a place to pick up and go. I will certainly be returning and telling anyone who will listen about Sweet Chef Southern Style Bakery! I look forward to stopping in soon for more goodies. PRO TIP: Warm your pie at 350 degrees F for 5-10 minutes depending on your preferences and taste buds.
