I can only review the gelato and the "mood." The mood is set by the incredibly unfriendly, unwelcoming sign that says "One taste per customer." What kind of way is that to run a gelato shop? Most expensive ice cream and gelato shops - and this one is expensive - encourage you to taste as many flavors as you care to before making your selection. You ask "What's this one," and they say "You wanna taste?!" Nope. Not here. One taste, Buckaroo. This is especially irksome when you ask what is a particular flavor and you get conflicting answers from two different employees. This is especially disappointing when there are flavors whose names belie their taste. With 3 scoops costing north of $7.00 I'd like to know that I like the flavors. Part of the fun of ordering three flavors in one bowl is the subtle art of mixology. But you need to know what they taste like before you do that. How chocolate is the white chocolate? How strong is the coffee flavor? Is it good vanilla or great vanilla? What is that blue stuff? The gelato we chose was good. Quite good. I guess I'd give it 4 or 5 stars if I'd been allowed to taste a few choices, before opting to just stick with safe choices. Or if someone brought me a bowl of it and I hadn't seen the sign. Yeah, I get it, you're up the street from Phillips Andover Academy and the kids are probably a pain in the... "Damn kids, eaten' all my gelato for nuthin'!" Deal with it another way. Your gelato is good, but you need to treat your customers with more respect and congeniality. read more

I didn't drink the Lavazza coffee products. I didn't nibble the crepes. Based solely on the overflowing scoop (read: 3+ mini scoops) of pistachio and bacio crammed in a baby yellow cup - the small: ~$4 - and promptly devoured by an already-full Lantern Bruncher, Mr. Gelato gets a big Woohoo! from this guy. Smooth, rich, and texturally perfect, the decadent dark chocolate gelato is littered with crunchy hazelnuts in a combo I'd take over too sweet Nutella anyday. If you disagree, they have Nutella gelato, too, so go suck an egg with your dumb ol' Nutella fixation. The pistachio is playful, neither too nutty, too salty nor too sweet. I could take a smidge more of the base flavor, but it also could've been strong armed by the outstanding bacio. Yes, they'll split flavors, even in a small, so combo Smurf (it's blue, not sure the flavor) with - what's this? - strawberry gelato! The "always a sorbetto, never a bride" berry gets actual creamy treatment at Mr. Gelato, and the discerning wife approves with two sticky thumbs up. A resounding 4.5 stars, and a cute patio in the plaza to boot! read more

I first visited Mr. Gelato Cafe when it opened about three years ago. The coffee is excellent and the food is always delicious. The focus of this cafe is on gelato and coffee, but there are also a lot of great food options to choose from: salads, paninis, and crepes, as well as soups in the winter. Everything is homemade and made to order. Everything I have ordered has been excellent, and the crepes are as good as any crepes I've tasted in France. The place is cozy and inviting, and the owner is very friendly and accommodating. My only wish is for the food to be served later in the day since I believe he stops serving hot food at 4pm, but you can still order the sweet crepes, gelato and all of the drinks after that. I highly recommend this cafe to anyone looking for great food and excellent, strong coffee! read more

The word of the day here, with respect to your gelato, is "overloaded." First, there's the container itself. My "large," which is 3 scoops, was full with the second scoop, and the cup was definitely of the "large" size with respect to gelato. Second, there's the flavor. Finally, there's something NOT overloaded, and that's the cost. Compared to what is theoretically the same size vessel for gelato at places in Boston (trust me on this, I was at one last night), you get about 1/3 more gelato for about 1/3 less. You've also got comfy indoor seating as well as plenty of outdoor seating depending on your mood and the weather. I might be tempted at some point to try some of their other products here, but for me, this is a place to come for gelato!! read more

Such a cute little place in downtown Andover! You could go for coffee or for a little sandwich during lunch time. I got a latte which was so nicely designed along with a gelato crepe which was super delicious! It was a little breezy so we ate inside but they did have a little sitting area outside as well! I was thrilled to hear that a local crepe, gelato, dessert, smoothie and coffee cafe had opened in Andover, and upon going I was not the least bit disappointed. I came here last weekend with my friend for brunch and fell in love. We both ordered the Banana Nutella crepes and absolutely LOVED them- a must try! The espresso is also excellent- my iced latte was smooth and delicious, and I'm admittedly a coffee snob. I came here for desert after a late lunch with a friend. We actually weren't planning on getting any since we were full but once we saw the gelato sign we had our minds set. I bought two of the carrot cakes, one to eat there and one to go ( I have thing for carrot cakes) and my friend got the cookies and cream gelato. After sampling probably 6 flavors she almost couldn't make up her mind since they were so good. My carrot cake was good but I definitely loved the gelato! The texture and flavor was amazing. I could taste the sweet goodness in every bite. I basically ate most of my friend's gelato. Whoops! Considering their small size was pretty generous I didn't feel too bad hehe. I have a pretty good feeling that this is going to be my go-to place for gelato. read more

Love this tucked away little shop in downtown Andover. The atmosphere is comfy and casual and fun! Overall I am impressed with the Coffee (I ordered a Latte). It was very smooth and rich. I am sad to say I did not partake in the Gelato, but it seemed to be a crowd pleaser. On a Saturday, there was a constant flow of customers getting the dessert. I did try the caprese Crepes--- they were eh- just okay. Overall this place is very promising- a great place to spend an afternoon reading on the couches inside or the tables outside. As a side note, they are a bit disorganized and frazzled- I think they could use some additional help. read more

I went to the Mr. Gelato Cafe today based on a recent FB review and reccomendation. It's a little out of my way, but i love crepes and gelato, so why not try it. The parking is convenient, the shop is small but plenty of comfortable seats. The menu is varied; gelato, 14 flavors, sweet crepe confections and various hot and cold drinks. I had a gelato crepe with berry gelato. I was asked if i wanted strawberries. It wasnt until i paid that the 5 slices of strawberry cost an extra 3 bucks. I felt duped. The worst part is the owner was kind of a jerk. I introduced myself and said that i came tonight based on a nice review. He looked at me as if i was an alien and then walked away from me. A thank you or thanks for coming would have been nice. Another group had trash from their Gelatos. They brought it up to the counter and Mr Personality said "dump it in the green bucket". It wasnt what he said, but how he said it. I like gelato but with scores of excellent ice cream options around i dont think I'll go back. read more

Food is fine. However, they are overpriced - a small Pellegrino cost $2.50 and water $1.90... The owner also seems like he doesn't want to be there..... The major part of a business is faking to smile so the customers can leave the place happy.....And he's rude to his employees.... expects them to do everything for him and gets angry when they can't make a coffee. read more

A hidden gem in downtown Andover...just FYI it may be a little tricky to find so you want to enter through the archway in the middle of the brick building on Main Street that houses the Dunkin Donuts and UBurger. Inside there is a courtyard area, and Mr. Gelato is on the right. I was there yesterday with my Meetup group after enjoying a hike at Phillip's Academy, and everyone was really happy with their gelato! Service is fast and friendly. I had the pistachio gelato which was a nice treat after an hour's hike and walk into downtown Andover. Will definitely be back, perhaps to try to crepes next time. read more

The coffee is out of this world. It's got a rich, bold flavor that somehow doesn't have a hint of bitterness. The crepes are really good too. They keep the place spotlessly clean, and there's some outdoor seating in the courtyard that's shielded from the hustle and bustle of downtown. This is a pretty good place to drop by if you're ever downtown. I've only ever had the gelato here, so I can't speak for much else. The hazelnut gelato is really good. I got a medium which was two scoops and a good amount of gelato for me. My only gripe with this place is that Mr. Gelato tends to close very early; they close at 9 on Fridays and Saturdays, so they always seem to be closed whenever I come by. read more

What a wonderful place to treat yourself and friends to a delicious gelato. I've enjoyed coffee and dessert three different times and recently branched out to explore the panini offerings. My pesto and mozzarella panino was "da morire" (though a bit piccolo for my appetite that day); the salad garnish added a tasty touch. I recommend the pistacchio in the Affogato al Caffe (Espresso w/ Gelato). Having a choice between indoor and outdoor seating is the best! Conversations inside can compete with the satellite radio but the staff will turn down the tunes a notch if asked. Unfortunately, Mr. Gelato decided it was a good idea to no longer make their excellent paninis and savory crepes available "at night" aka 3:30pm. When I expressed my disappointment, the owner became argumentative. Having been trained in customer service, I believe in the importance of high customer service standards. If it wasn't for the food I don't necessarily know if I'd come back! The gelato, crepes, and smoothies are delicious but the service isn't nearly up to the quality of the food. My wife and I have been in 2 or 3 times and both times we ordered crepes and either she gets hers first or I get mine but then we wait a good ten to fifteen minutes for the next. And when I ask about the other the answer is points to the line and says sorry with an attitude. Love this place! A nice little cafe right in the heart of Andover. Their gelato is delicious - my personal favorite is the chocolate with chocolate sprinkles.
