here's another coffee joint i finally got to. i sat outside with a friend [it's shaded by the building], and sipped a great cup o' joe. my friend also had a tasty looking strawberry scone. this is a cool place, with great ambiance, to hang out. it will now be one of my regular stops. as as aside, i love the graphic art on coffee cup sleeves [i actually tape them on my bedroom door-believe that!]. this one is the 1st i've seen that is in techicolor. woo-hoo. read more

Cup O' Joe - always good - Coffee & Tea Near Me - Columbus, Ohio

I'm not a big fan of franchise coffee places...normally.However, this place is one of those businesses that I like with a great big asterisk right next to it. See, one of the common complaints in my Yelp reviews is that many of the businesses in Clintonville and the University District stink. They stink because they have a captive audience (students) who will come there because they have no alternatives, or the alternatives are all basically the same (cheap Indian, cheap Pizza, cheap fast food). So many places (read my reviews for more ranting) can get away with the bare minimum and even be popular. Coffee is no exception to this, and I'm not a fan of the coffee places in this part of town...except for this Cup O' Joe. Why? It does everything competently. The coffee is not the best you'll have, but it's better than Starbucks. There's a lot of seating and space to work, as well as free wireless. They have some food that's more like actual food (sandwiches and salads), not sugary-sweet crap designed to provoke an insulin coma. On the other hand, there's enough sugary-sweet food to save you when you're starting to crash. Critically, in the bleak summer months, this place has A/C. So, for the harried Clintonville-based academic, this place is the best you can find without going to the Short North or Grandview. If you can drive like a grown-up and parallel park, parking isn't that hard to find for this place. So, while this place isn't my favorite coffee place by a long shot, it is one of my favorite places to work. read more

Unfortunately, they use Oregon Chai--very ordinary (in my opinion anything I can buy in a grocery store doesn't belong in a coffee shop). I had a really awful customer experience here once, where a very rude barista asked me how many shots I wanted in my latte (that wasn't the rude part, the rude part was when I said "whatever people normally put in" and he said "there is no "normal""). Ok, yeah, whatever, go all Derrida on me, I know you're smart. I guarantee you I get asked the # of shots question maybe once a YEAR at coffee places, so just do what you do those other 363 days a year. Anyway. That's not even my issue with this place (or, issues). I find COJ's coffee to be too acidic, the tables at this particular establishment are all off-kilter, the wifi seems to be impossibly slow whenever I go, and the dessert items by and large seem dry and boring. Generally, my feeling when I leave COJ is one of dissatisfaction and frustration, even though by and large the shop is pleasant, the bulk coffee section on the wall shows off many options, and the espresso drinks are completely acceptable. read more

My favorite coffee shop in town. I'm usually here throughout the week getting work done or hanging out with a friend. The coffee is just wonderful. My favorite thing is a full city with a chocolate biscotti. Not only is the coffee 10/10, but the staff is very friendly and personable. Over the time I've spent here I've gotten to know the staff more and more and love seeing them when I come here! Beautiful, cozy atmosphere. The blue couch in front of the fireplace is the best spot. We all need a good neighborhood coffee shop for pit-stops during Sunday morning strolls down High St, and this Cup O' Joe is the perfect refueling location. Most days there are a few tables available, although I personally would love another couch or two. The patio is relaxed and is puppy friendly. And there are plenty of electrical outlets for those days I just need to be productive. My only grumble is that I haven't seen too many out-of-the-ordinary seasonal beverages. You know, those treat drinks we have to have at least once a season (ah hem pumpkin spice latte). I'd much rather support a local business even if I don't mind certain mega coffee shops, so help me handle my specialty fix! Besides a relaxed atmosphere, the coffee is always good - hot! You should probably try the zucchini walnut muffin - yum! And seriously, a jalapeno cheddar bagel with multiple cream cheese flavors to choose from - you've won me over. In a nutshell: real good coffee, real good people, real bad wireless Internet connection. Cup o' Joe is great because I'm a weirdo and so are the people there. Or at least they're friendly to weirdos. I always feel welcome, and the staff are happy to chat as long as it won't hold up other customers. They remember your name. You can tell they're happy to be at work and it makes for an overall really great environment to be in. The more you go, the more you'll pick up on who the locals are. You'll realize that, suddenly, you're one yourself when they smile and wave at you. When I was a student, and then a TA, I practically lived at Cup O Joe. Now that I have a 9-5 jorb, my visits are sadly infrequent. Their patio is pet-friendly which is a plus. They have a little jar of biscuits to reward your doggy pal for putting up with you leaving them outside to go in and buy coffee. The only thing I don't like about Cup o' Joe is that their wireless isn't awesome. If you're going there to work, you're best off downloading any files ahead of time... or just ditching work altogether and visiting the coffee shop solely to enjoy some reading. read more

I've tried this place several times and it's just not working. To start, I don't really like the roast of their coffees that I've tried. I normally just ask for the 'dark roast'. Each time it's been either way too bitter or too acidic. I prefer Cafe Brioso downtown or even Caribou (Sumatra). Even more annoying is the fact that there seems to always be a boom box behind the counter blasting some crap heavy metal or whatever. I mean, is this a coffee shop or 'Used Kids Records"?? Also, the staff all seem to be attempting the tragically hip, tatted-out, "I'm so mod, so counterculture, so much the rebel it hurts" lifestyle. If they would pay as much attention to their job as they do to comparing their various piercings, it might be a better place. 'Nuff said. read more

This particular Cup o' Joe has been a perfect standby for me for some years. It's always easy to find parking, possible to find a seat (though not always the ones I want most), stocked with Pattycake's (it's not like they're not right across the street or anything), and reliable with the wifi. Plus there's outdoor seating. Granted, there were ashtrays out there when last I went, and am I wrong in my understanding that there's supposed to be a 20-foot non-smoking buffer outside the door? So not the coolest for those of us who'd like some sunshine with our tea but not so much the ciggy smoke. But I'll sit upwind and try not to split hairs. Did I mention the fireplace yet? No? Ok, so there's a fireplace. Love the fireplace, especially (big surprise) in the winter. Nothing cozier than an overheating laptop on your lap (I had that problem with my last one; my current one is usually less temperamental) and your feet up on the ledge in front of a roaringish fire thingy while you sip your tea. This location is mostly good for coming to work solo or in pairs, though. I would not risk holding a meeting there. There's that one booth-esque table, but the rest of the space is all teeny tiny tables that will probably fill up in a manner most inconvenient to your pushing-a-couple-together plans. read more

Cup O' Joe in clintonville reminds me of the bar exam. I spent countless hours there studying, hoarding two tables that I covered with books, and getting hot water refills for my tea because I was super unemployed while studying. This is a great place to study. It is quiet enough, everyone is polite, and there is even a little bit of parking in the back, though the lot is really hard to get out of, even if you are packed with the power of green tea. From the menu, I enjoy one of the frozen banana drinks (something chocolatey), the quad espresso for here (and the look on the barrista's face when I said for here, as if he was going to be responsible for a child bouncing off the walls spouting law words), and of course, the teas are wonderful and really last for about four cups, refills without any resentment too! The bagels were good for midwestern giant dough balls (I mean that in a good way. I'm a carboholic) and the pattycake bakery fare is super nice. The sandwich that I had (hummus and veggie) was not that great. It was soggy and flavorless. If I really wanted a sandwich I should have visited lavash across the street. Anyhow, lots of seating, a cute fireplace, a big giant round table for those who happen to bring giant backpacks full of law books, and a pleasant patio. Right down from my house. Win Win. read more

Like the other Cup-O-Joe locations, the atmosphere is nice and the espresso is terrible. Seriously, you are better off drinking a Starbucks latte. There is some sort of strangely burnt flavor with their espresso, and I don't think it's the baristas, because they seemed totally competent (and friendly!). I've also had a "meh" scone here (way too airy and cakey and strange) but it wasn't terrible and it tasted fresh. They also get in cheesecake from NYC which is actually awesome, and I don't even like cheesecake. I like this location better than the Lennox one, just because there's a better vibe - more people coming and going and meeting people here. The big strange couch here is really, really uncomfortable though - the back is a half moon shape so it's difficult to lean back and be comfortable. read more

I finally went to this Cup O Joe after years of saying I would. Talk about a cup o procrastination. I really dig this place. This coffee shop has a great, relaxed atmosphere. There is ample seating, including booths, tables, and stools at a high-top. They have obligatory baked goods such as bagels, pastries, and cakes (I ate a wedge of this poppy seed stuff - wish I'd bought two!). There are also sandwiches, which would be great for lunch. Did I mention there's a patio? Perfect for this summer weather. They're also open fairly late, which is great if you ever need that late-night buzz or work 3rd shift. The staff was very helpful. I was sitting very near the register, and they sound like genuinely nice people. The location is ideal - right on High St. I wouldn't mind living in that area. Overall, my experience was very positive. I'll reassess this shop after a few more visits. For now...four stars. read more

This Cup o'Joe location is study-central most of the times I've visited. It's proximity to OSU makes sure of that. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. It makes this place a lot more relaxing to go to. When folks come in, they are usually there for the long haul. At most of the other Joe locations, people are coming and going like crazy. If I want to relax and read with my drink, this is where I stop. They have outdoor seating and a great selection of drinks and goodies. As a local chain, Cup o'Joe does pretty well being Columbus' answer to Starbucks and Caribou Coffee (though we have plenty of those too). The atmosphere is a bit more inviting than at those establishments. I think having been birthed by Stauf's helps! read more

This is a great local coffeeshop! Plenty of space to read the news either on paper or on your laptop. Cozy tables and chairs if you come in a group. If you'll be working/studying, plenty of plugspace and of course free wifi. Baristas are friendly and knowledgable. And, an outdoor patio with plenty of tables. The only downside is the place is a bit more expensive than your normal indy cafe. But you get what you pay for, and this cup o' joe is worth it. read more

I like coming to this Cup O' Jo because its close to me and provides good coffee and good service, especially considering the lack of coffee shop competition in Columbus. Unfortunately, it does have one notable problem. Some of the electrical outlets don't work! This is a serious problem for me because I pretty much only come to coffee shops to work on my laptop. I will often skip this shop completely if I notice that there aren't any spaces open near a functioning electrical outlet. Overall this is a nice utilitarian neighborhood coffee shop, but I certainly wouldn't count it as one of my favorites. read more

Seriously the worst, most schizophrenic, inappropriately loud music of any coffee shop in the city. 80s blues with horrendous saxophone solos, the same five songs from the 50s that you've heard incessantly your entire life, and new age massage studio keyboard music----you never know what you're going to get. This is still my favorite place in Columbus for coffee. I walked in here around 4 p.m. last Wednesday and couldn't find a place to sit. I stood around awkwardly for a few minutes before a guy flagged me down, offering to share his table. Kindness wins! The beverages are decent. Service and from staff is on par. The internet works fine lately, seems like they have fixed the Internet connectivity bugs. There are just a few things I would change to make it more confortable. 1: make sure all of the soft seats are comfortable and not broken. (Soft seats vs the wooden chairs at tables) 2: dust underneath everything. I put my bag down on the floor and picked up several dust bunnies. Ick! 3: turn on the fire place. It's currently 36 degrees and it would be nice to have some additional toastiness. 4: fix the holes. Why do businesses do this? There is a giant hole in the base of the fireplace where wood is exposed where tile should be. Just get it fixed so it fits in with the rest of the space. 5: this is the most important **for goodness sakes get a hook in the bathroom for people to put their purses and bags on**ive been in that bathroom with my purse and laptop bag around my neck (because the floor is often wet) one time too many! Some cup o Joe's have closed down in the area. I think the little things matter. People clearly like coming here. Maybe that extra something will keep them coming back. read more

I LOVE this Cup O Joe. This seems to be where the hippie/granola/older OSU students choose to hang out. The Cup O Joe at Lennox can have lots of high schoolers filtering in from Jonnie Rockets or the movie theatre, and the one in German Village is more business/upper-class. Clintonville's Cup O Joe is just my cup o tea. The environment is laid-back and semi-cozy - there's a faux fireplace in the center that's perfect for when it's cold outside. The only thing to watch out for is Sunday's: the procrastinators tend to be there all day (including myself) and it's often hard to find a seat. Something else to consider: sometimes their internet doesn't work, or it takes 20 minutes to log on, so if you're counting on it for something you're probably better off going somewhere else. read more
