I hit up the Cupcake City truck at Government Center. I went with two cupcakes. The first was the Hot Fudge Sundae. The cake was good and had chocolate chips, which I always enjoy. You can never have too many chocolate chips. The frosting was a bit too sweet for me, though not as sweet as some frostings. The second cupcake I tried was a chocolate cupcake. Again, the chocolate cake was good and had chocolate chips. The chocolate buttercream, unfortunately, was too sweet for my tastes and not chocolately enough. We got 4 cupcakes: mint chocolate chip, red velvet, a hostess football cupcake and a chocolate chip cupcake. Absolutely the best cupcakes we have had in forever!!!!!! The chocolate chip was so light and fluffy and the hostess cupcake was so dense and not dry. (Don't make me say that word). My daughter LOVED the mint chocolate chip. This place is disappointing. They were not inedible like the dry muffin like consistency of whole foods, but nothing better than grocery store quality. If you want real cupcake, Cupcake Charlie's is 5 stars and worth a 45 min drive to Plymouth. Bought 3 flavors, peanut butter, vanilla and salted caramel. Didn't mind the 2.75 price if they weren't so small for the price. Peanut Butter: Store bought candy on top of pre bought tasting frosting with very mild peanut butter flavor. Chocolate cake tasted like boxed mix and I think there was a filling inside but was so mild could not really tell the difference. Vanilla: Dry cake, bland flavor and nothing better than a run of the mill grocery store cupcake with overly sweet frosting. Salted caramel: Nothing salty or caramel-y about it. Again, tasted like out of a cake mix box. This frosting was different, and much worse. WAY too much butter. read more

"Meh" Unfortunately, all hype, no substance. We were totally looking forward to a delicious experience and were very disappointed that we were quite underwhelmed with the flavor and presentation of the half dozen cupcakes we bought. I'm being generous when I say the flavor was on par with grocery store cupcakes. My 20yo daughter thinks grocery store cupcakes taste better. :( Also disappointed that the variety of flavors wasn't very creative or inspiring ... peanut butter, oreo cookie, lemon (usually my favorite flavor but this was just okay, definitely not crave-worthy), chocolate (just okay, not to die for), salted caramel (not a lot of flavor), gold/vanilla (again, grocery store are better in our opinion). Nothing fun or unique or so delicious you'd get a craving for it, unfortunately. The cupcake decor/presentation was also uninspired. Just a swirled blob of frosting that may have had a dusting of crushed Oreos on top for extra color. Don't really know what I was expecting as I've never been to a cupcake place before. Guess I was expecting to be surprised, excited, delighted, to feel like this was a special treat ... and none of those things happened. For almost $3 a cupcake, yikes, I really expected more than a modified grocery store cupcake with mediocre taste topped with a quick, cost-effective swirl of frosting. I want scrumptious flavor that I can't quite get enough of, and I want a beautiful presentation like a colorful flower decoration on top so it looks special. And I want it to be oversized like a muffin! Probably the most telling part of our experience is this: Of the three remaining cupcakes that we brought home to my husband and two teenage boys--all of whom enjoy sweets, two of the cupcakes were left partially uneaten. They're pricey, but the cupcakes are amazing. Usually stick to special occasions when I buy them. The people working there seem very nice. Particularly the older gentleman that helped me. One Friday, I was mistaken about the time that they opened. He saw me in the doorway and very graciously let me in an hour early. They didn't have the entire selection of cupcakes available due to my timing, but allowed me to purchase what was ready. He packed them beautifully and gave me "care Instruction" since they would not be eaten till the next day. He was super friendly and we had a nice conversation while I chose my cupcakes. I was excited to see Cupcake City open in Reading and stopped by the other day to finally buy some for myself and a dozen for a party. I can't speak to the party cupcakes, but I purchased the peanut butter, carrot cake, strawberry, and hostess. Like other reviewers, I've found some of their cupcakes to be on the dry side. Some of the filled ones are super sweet - my kids couldn't finish theirs. That said, the lemon cupcake was outstanding. Pretty sure they are just standard-sized cupcakes - not small as some reviewers have suggested. My wife received a package c/o a few friends of hers for a little recovery / get well gift. I was very surprised myself when the CC van pulled in the driveway for the delivery. Then we got to tasting the wonderful delights, we were so very impressed with the flavors, the look of each and the taste. Cream on top - awesome, cream in the middle, hello!!!! WOW! What a great treat it was to receive these and we paid it forward to a neighbor's kids for a birthday treat. They were very very impressed, and just absolutely loved them. Don't miss out on this wonderful dessert, it's right off the Rt.95 / Rt.128, so it's easy off / easy on. Be sure to check them out. Excellent customer service. I went to Cupcake City the other day. I was not impressed at all. Out of the four cupcakes purchased, three were overcooked and the other one was undercooked. The lemon was undercooked and too sweet (and I love sweet). The signature chocolate one was hard and had hardly any chocolate taste because it was overcooked. Certain flavors just didn't make sense together, mint frosting but it had cream cheese base which was horrible. The only things that are good about Cupcake City is that it is cute inside and they have a cute van. But they don't deliver on the products that they are selling. It is a shame because I was really looking forward to having them nearby. I won't be going back. I truly hope that they read their reviews to improve or they won't be in business a few years from now. read more

Cupcake City is a fantastic addition to Reading. I got an assortment of 13 flavors and all were exceptional. They have flavors such as blueberry lemon, coconut, salted chocolate caramel, maple pancake (with bacon in it!), strawberry shortcake, red velvet, chocolate peanut butter~ ok, you get the idea.... they have a lot of flavors. The bottom line here is that they are all fantastic. The cake itself is very moist, yet dense, but not heavy. A very difficult combination to pull off. The frosting is plentiful, but not too sweet and it has a nice flavor profile and is paired well with the cake beneath it. Everything tasted fresh as well, it didn't seem to have been previously frozen at all. The prices are good and on Sunday's you can you can get a better price if you buy a dozen rather than if you purchased them for the standard $2.75. The only challenging piece is the sign is difficult to see from a certain direction because it is blocked by a large tree, but just know that it is across from Harrow's. Enjoy! read more

This cupcake bakery makes the yummiest creations! Their version of the classic chocolate snack cupcake with the white squiggly icing on top is divine! I just looked over my Yelp reviews and realized it looks like all I do is eat cupcakes, which is not really true. Cupcakes aren't even my favorite treat but with cupcake shops on every corner these days, I end up trying a lot of different cupcake shops. Cupcake City is located in the suburbs but does have a mobile truck that I have found on City Hall Plaza at least twice. I have had the cupcakes from the truck and the regular store and they have always been high quality. The Oreo flavor is my favorite with Strawberry Shortcake a close second. The cupcakes are a good size - big but not overwhelmingly large like Crumbs larger cupcakes. The cupcakes are moisy but not greasy and the frosting is always tasty but not overly sweet. The firsst time I found the truck on City Hall Plaza, I told the guy manning the window that I thought Cupcake City's cupcakes were far better than most of the fancy pants cupcake shops downtown and I stand by that statement. read more

I recently began a gluten-free diet, and found this place after a desperate search for cupcakes I could actually eat. The rest of my family is not gf, so when we went in, they tried the red velvet, mint chocolate, and oreo cupcakes. They did enjoy them - good flavor, good texture, etc. I tried the gf chocolate cupcake in store (couldn't wait!) and took the gf vanilla cupcake home (barely made it through the front door). The gf chocolate cupcake had nice flavor but was so moist that it almost seemed they had not cooked it through, and it was so crumbly that it fell apart in my hands as I was eating (I realize the crumbling is an issue many gf baked goods will have, but this seemed excessive to me; it was quite a mess). The frosting on the chocolate cupcake was good; it was a Swiss caramel buttercream with good texture and great flavor. I can't give you a legitimate opinion of the gf vanilla cupcake. I'm not a fan of vanilla cupcakes but got one anyway just because I was so excited and wanted to try all my options. It was not as moist (in a good way) as the gf chocolate cupcake, probably not as crumbly, can't really speak to the flavor though because I didn't eat all of it. It was topped with a chocolate buttercream, which had a really filmy texture to it and the flavor was off, and it was yucky. There is no point in eating a cupcake without frosting, so after a few bites I just gave up. So three stars for making an effort with the gluten-free and for the regular cupcakes which my family enjoyed, but I will keep looking. read more

I searched online for cupcakes/bakery in Reading MA. and I found Cupcake City, I called on a Saturday, and spoke with Kristen ( a co-owner), I explained with very short notice, what I needed, and when I needed it delivered. Kristen was so helpful, she went out of her to please me. When the order was all said and done. I remembered I needed a gluten free cupcake as well. It has taken me a long time, but I finally visited CupCake City in Reading. I have to say that I was a bit underwhelmed. The shop is nice, but the cupcakes were a bit dry.A chatty old man told me everything was baked on site the same day, but the red velvet and Oreo cookie that we tried tasted like they might have been in the case since the day before we were there. I was also surprised at the size of the cupcakes and the price. I went in to get some for a family gathering, but after tasting them, did not feel that $ 33.00 a dozen for dry cupcakes was really worth my money.
