I have been going here for years. It has gone down in quality and service however I believe in supporting local businesses and my daughter and family enjoy this place. I ordered a 10 inch 75.00 cake a week in a half before the date I needed it. I received an email confirmation that I would be contacted to confirm my order which no one ever contacted as they had always previously. I went to the cake today and the store had a post it that they were closed until 3. I went again at 3 and there was a new post it saying they would open at 330. When I went back for the third time they told 'my order wasn't until the next day which was incorrect. They refused to refund me. This place doesn't have the technology and send a confirmation with a date nor the service to follow to confirm as had been their standard. I was surprised when their Lees Summit location closed I understand why it closed and this plaza location is failing. I have been coming here anytime I need a sweet treat in the plaza. It's kind of tucked away in my opinion so you may not see it right away but once you find it, you might be hooked if you have a sweet tooth like me. They have lots of different flavors to choose from. I have had many of them at this point and you can't go wrong. They definitely taste as described in the name of the cupcake! I wish they were a little bit more dimensional in flavor but every cupcake has been consistent in sweetness, cake moistness, etc. I wish there was more of a seating area, but the space is pretty tight. The pictured cake was what was made - six inches with Havi's name spelled wrong as Habi. The cake looks like a child made it. Let me start by saying that I've been a customer of theirs since roughly 2014. It has been my favorite place to get cupcakes, not on only in KC, but anywhere. That being said, it has REALLY gone downhill as of late and I won't ever be going back. The last several times we've gone, it's getting progressively worse. First, it started with slower service, then it started with a lower quality products and mix-ups or substitutions, and now rising prices for an inferior product. Mix ups: My favorite is Let It Snow. Once recently, it didn't have the correct frosting on it. It's supposed to be a white chocolate cream cheese frosting, and they gave me something completely different, which I didn't realize until I got home to eat it. It was not good. Not sure if the person messed up or they just figured they would use whatever they had. Service: The young lady who has been working the counter the past several times I've stopped in seems annoyed when customers are there. She's not friendly and it feels like I'm interrupting her from doing something more important, by placing an order. After placing my order, she goes into the back, and I can hear her either talking on the phone or to another worker, and the discussion, based on her tone, is one that makes me feel like she is complaining about customers (me) coming in and annoying her. Yesterday, March 8th, my wife and I had just finished a nice dinner on the Plaza. We discussed dessert, and both of us said that the cupcakes and service had not been good the last several times we went. We decided to give it one more try, hoping it was back on track. It wasn't. On this day, we were 3rd in line. One couple had already ordered and they were waiting on their 2 cupcakes, then there was a couple in front of us. As we arrived, no one was at the front counter. We were there for about couple of minutes, then a family of 4 came in and got in line behind us. Then another couple came a few minutes later. Finally after about 5 minutes, the worker came out of the back with the 2 cupcakes for the first couple. The young woman had a very visible look of annoyance on her face. It was the same worker that had been there the last couple of times. We waited in line for close to 20 minutes just to place our order, and during that time, everyone behind us left. The service was extremely slow. There were only 2 couples in front of us! When we got home, we got into the cupcakes (it was about an hour after we received them), and we immediately noticed that there was far less frosting than normal. We also noted how sloppy they were put into the box...we had to wash our hands before even eating them. This has been a trend with them lately as well. They used to picture perfect, now they are just sloppy looking/lopsided cupcakes! The cupcakes we had were dry, and overcooked. The outside of the cupcakes were almost crunchy! This was 100% the worst I've ever had from them in my nearly 10 years of going there! If it was an outlier, that's one thing, but they have been getting worse and worse over the past year or so. They lost a long term customer, and I will let everyone I know about my experience. What once was the best, has now turned into complete trash. The cupcakes are also $5.25 each now, which is fine if they are good, but they just aren't. Who doesn't love cupcakes?! Okay...well funnily usually me but, Cupcake á la Mode holds a special sugary spot in my heart. I grew up anticipating Monday's where the magical confections at the nearby Country Club Plaza store would go on discount and I could start my week with a sweet treat. The seasonal flavors are always switching but, there are also tried and true classics like the Stuffed French Toast cupcake. This cupcake never disappoints with the soft luscious vanilla cake and the buttery cinnamon melding together with rich frosting, totally decadent but worth the calories for sure. Right now the pumpkin cheesecake cupcake is calling my name, call me a basic witch but, pumpkin desserts always warm me up on the inside before even taking a bite and the creamy pumpkin mixed with the tangy flavors of cheesecake sounds to die for. I would like to mention that I am a firm believer in vanilla over chocolate (call me basic again why don't you!) but, honestly, even my mother who usually is the yin to my yang or in this case, the chocolate to my vanilla, prefers the yellow or vanilla based cupcakes because they just seem more moist. Also, just a note, these cupcakes are really best consumed on the day they are bought, they can be brought back to life a day or maybe two after purchasing with a little help of the microwave (only about 10 sec people, don't go overboard and turn your buttercream into pure butter!) but, there is nothing like a fresh cupcake...á la mode or not. This boutique cupcake shop may not be the trendiest dessert concept around nonetheless, it has been around for over a decade and that means something. What does it mean? Well one can only assume it means the people like cupcakes and in particular Cupcakes á la Mode, I have been and will continue to be a part of their loyal fanbase hopefully for another decade to come...yum! read more

It makes me so sad to leave this review, because Cupcake a la Mode has been my favorite cupcake place for over 10 years. They used to make the very best cupcakes and frosting!! But the last 3 to 5 times we've been there, the employees aren't visible, and when you find them they are rude. And worst of all, the cupcakes just don't taste as good anymore. My husband went to the store on Wornall for my birthday yesterday and ordered 4 mocha cupcakes. (Which used to be amazing!!) The employee looked unhappy that she had to make the cupcakes... and while they looked correct, the frosting was not mocha. (It looked chocolate, but didn't even taste like chocolate. No idea what was put on top. It wasn't tasty.) We give up and won't try again. I'm so sad. read more

9/14/2024 @ 825pm I hate to write this review but it is more on the customer service side vs the food. Unfortunately we never had a chance to try the cupcakes due to the very rude employee that was very unhelpful and unprofessional from the start. When we first walked in we were not greeted at all. The young girl who was working behind the cashier registered proceeded to tell us that it was closing closing hours despite the hours posted stating they closed at 9. She then rudely proceeds to tell us that she was working on a door dash order and that there were very limited cupcakes left. We asked should we leave and she stated again with a nonchalant attitude again we are doing closing procedures and I am working on this order "so you can wait but it may take a while and I might not have what you need". There was no I'm sorry or these are the items we have on hand. We felt very dismissed and for us to be visiting from out of town excited to try this place" we immediately felt unwelcome and left. Used to love this place - it was always my go-to when I wanted to get someone a sweet treat. Now, I really wouldn't recommend it to anyone. At $6 per cupcake, I'd hoped that they use butter but there were chunks of unincorporated shortening in the frosting. The cake by itself was also quite bland. Not worth the price whatsoever. Also the cupcake I ordered didn't have the decoration on it that was advertised and the employee gave it to me already tipped over in the box. Went here for my first time yesterday to get my wife surprise cupcakes for a celebration and let me tell you.. absolutely delicious!! The customer service was great where she helped me understand their cupcakes of the month and was patient with me as it was my first time. Wonderful service. I'm not even a huge cupcake guy but the icing was amazing and the cupcake muffin was so well made. So far we've tried the Reese's one which tasted just like a Reese's and the pumpkin cupcake of the month which my wife said 'that was the best cupcake I've ever had.' Looks like I'm not the only one who's disappointed in Cupcake a la Mode. I've been a long time customer and it had been a while since I had been in. I popped in today because I was on the Plaza and right away I had a bad feeling. First off... the store was DIRTY. The display case looked terrible. There was dust pretty much on every surface. I had to ring the bell for service and the girl working looked at me like I had two heads when I asked if I could buy some cupcakes. She wrote down what I wanted and went to the back. I waited almost 10 minutes and while I waited is when I noticed how dirty this store was. I had a bad feeling about these cupcakes I was buying. She finally came back and before I paid I opened the box of 4 cupcakes and they looked terrible! Frosting falling over. Definitely not the beautiful cupcakes I'm used to getting from Cupcake a la mode. She offered to refrost them because these were for a friend. I declined and decided not to purchase them. She apologized and told me she was new to working there. I told her normally I would say yes to her refeosting them but based on the condition of this store, I wasn't comfortable buying them. It is enough to make your mouth water and stomach grumble. The shop is decorated with a pink and black theme and has a seating area of 4-5 smaller tables as well. Price of cupcakes at 3.50 which is comparable to other bakeries in the area. They have a large stock of cupcakes ranging from vanilla to chocolate flavors along with holiday options as well! The cupcakes certainly cover all the classic basis including s'mores, peanut butter, fruity flavors and more. I have tried their raspberry lemonade and determined that I was certainly a bigger fan of any chocolate flavor over the vanilla options. This time, I purchased a Gold Digger for a friend with chocolate cake and a caramel center which I was told is one of their popular items. It was delicious! This place was awesome! Located in a fun area, there's lots of great shopping around. It's just a few steps off the main road. I travel the country and have tried cupcakes in a lot of places and these were truly some of my favorite. I usually prefer vanilla cake over chocolate but this chocolate cake was delicious! A break down of what I ordered: French Toast Cupcake: Their best seller and rightfully so. It tasted like a giant piece of perfect french toast. Raspberry Lemonade Cupcake: Tangy and beautiful. Some coffee/chocolate concoction that I forgot the name of: AMAZING. There was even a chocolate covered espresso bean on top! A mint cupcake of some sort: Haven't tried that one yet, but it looks great! Shortbread Latte: Absolutely delicious. Cupcake A La Mode is the first place I've found with shortbread syrup Brown Sugar/ Cinnamon iced tea: surprisingly delicious! Needless to say, after two cups of coffee for breakfast and then immediately driving to Cupcake A La Mode and consuming everything on the above list, my heart is beating at 100 MPH in a state of sugary overdose (but in the best way possible). I spoke with the manager, Becky, and she explained that they come up with 2 new, special, experimental cupcakes every month. Starting tomorrow, September will feature a Root Beer cupcake and a Banana Split Cupcake. The Root beer cupcake will be made with Root Beer Shatto milk! I'm never disappointed with my visits here! The fun selection of cupcakes at this spot all look incredibly delicious and so far, all that I have had have been! I recently had one called the Mamma Mia with tiramisu influences and the mocha is always great. They always have a few featured cakes which keeps things exciting. Located on the plaza, this is always the best place to come for a last minute treat. The interior is adorable and the packaging for the cakes is fun and *flirty*. This review hurts to leave. I've been a HUGE fan of this business since it started. Stopped in today to get a treat for a special occasion. The young lady behind the counter was lovely. But that is where to good stops. The store was FILTHY. I would be hard pressed to believe they've run a broom and mop in there in months. The shelves were dirty, the display cakes were falling apart. The cupcake case wasn't much better. Filthy glass, filthy tags, even the display cupcakes looked old and neglected. They should really be ashamed at how terrible their business looked. The cupcakes themselves were mediocre at best. The cakes tasted stale, the presentation was terrible, one cupcake had so much icing on it that we literally threw 2/3 of it away - such a waste of product. Thank goodness I didn't have to worry about any cross contamination because they clearly weren't worried about it in their prep area as the underside of the chocolate frosting mixed with green sprinkles that didn't go on the cupcake. Oh, and the pet hair tossed in there for good measure. And, no, it wasn't from my pet. It was on the underside of the frosting pile. I don't know if this is an overall issue or just this store. I do know that I've eaten my last treat from them and they were always my go to for showers and birthdays over the years. I hope this feedback helps them do better. read more
