These ricotta hotcakes were so good & I'm still thinking about it. We've also ordered some tarts & croissants for the table. Croissants didn't look fresh but the breakfast options are a must try. We've ordered breakfast, coffee first and found the table. They brought the food and coffee to our table. It took about 10-15 minutes to get the ricotta hotcakes for not so busy restaurant that morning. It's right in the heart of downtown right next to one of the streetcar stops. Looking forward to go back there for ricotta hotcakes. Haha!

This may be an abnormal review, based on the other reviews that I have read about this place, but the day that we went, they were short staffed, which just caused everything to be a mess to be honest. There was a short line to order, but the line took a long time to move. When we finally got up to the counter and ordered the pancakes, we were told that it was about a one hour wait time for the pancakes. My guess is that people in line in front of us were also wanting to order their famous pancakes and once they got up there, they realize they were a long wait time and had to take the next two minutes to pick another item from the menu, causing a slow moving line. Ordered our food, sat down and it was about a 30 minute wait for food. We ordered the breakfast burrito and eggs Benedict. Honestly, the food was good. Decor and interior vibes were good. Unfortunately them being short staffed sent everything into a frenzy because there were no water cups available. We did not get silverware after ordering or with our food and then had to wave down an employee, who was of course busy doing other stuff to get us silverware so that we could eat. After this experience I am not likely to go back.

It's 12 o'clock somewhere but never too early for an espresso martini. Boozy and frothy ...and Yummy!

HomeGrown In Power & Light had a line out the door so I walked a block away to Banksia and the handful of people here are blissfully enjoying the fabulous food and drinks in comfort and peace. Started with this espresso martini! And Yes, that is the Free KC Streetcar in the background with a station right in front at 12th and Main : )

OMG THE LAMB PIE AND LAMINGTON WERE GREAT! First of all, I don't think I've ever seen a Lamington being sold in America, so I HAD to get it. If you've never been to Australia, the lamington is the equivalent of what an apple pie is in America. Aussies grow up eating lamington and Tim Tams--because they're so freaking delicious!! Anyhoo, the lamington was delicious. (It's a sponge cake with jam sandwiched between the two layers, and then the sandwich is coated in chocolate and rolled in shredded coconut.) I usually make them at home when I CRAVE them but now that I know Banksia has them, I'll just walk down the street for one lol. The lamb meat pie was also delicious. Great rosemary flavor! Also, it's quite sizable. When I first saw it, I thought it was kinda small, but I was definitely stuffed when I was finished with it. (AND THEN I had the lamington lol) I got both items to go but I'll definitely be back to dine in next weekend! I'll get the lamb pie again but I'll definitely get something else to try. Maybe the sausage roll.

I met an out of town friend in the city market, but we quickly realized that it was just to crowded to enjoy a Saturday brunch anywhere without a wait, so we hoped on the streetcar. Banksia is perfectly located at the Central Business stop making it very convenient. They are an odd combination of casual counter ordering, self serve water stations and cafeteria type seating and a few stools at a bar - sleek cafeteria if you will... but the price points reflect a more elevated experience. My friend had a salad with chicken and avocado that she enjoyed. I had a bowl with one biscuit and gravy. The sautéed onions in the gravy made it one of favorites ever! We also shared an English Muffin with vegamite just for the novelty and since we were at an Australian kitchen. We each had iced coffee beverages. A bit pricey for a casual meal but I would gladly return for a brunch or breakfast since the quality is there and great location.

I went with a group for a restaurant week because we just had to try the kangaroo. It was delicious as was everything else that we tried. I highly recommend that you step out of your comfort zone and try some new Australian foods.

Grabbed brunch at Banksia. I'd never been to this location. We ordered at the counter and found a table. I love the little Australian tidbits around. I got the mushroom and beet toast and an espresso martini. The martini was delish- a classic and not too sweet. The toast was very good. There were lots of things I was considering on the menu, so if I went back, I'd probably try something else

Honestly disappointed. The food overall was pretty good, 8/10. Appetizers 8/10, entrees 9/10, desserts 6/10. But the service was terrible. We had reservations for 5 people at 7pm, didn't leave until 9:45pm. Very slow service, the wait staff not attentive, not very apologetic, just really disappointed in the overall experience. Overall ambiance was okay, a little loud, not overly warm and welcoming environment. It took 30+ minutes to get alcoholic drinks, but for one person in our party it took over an hour for their lemonade! It wasn't even a full house, not overly crowded. They didn't seem prepared for KC Restaurant Week. My chili prawn linguine was actually served with bucatini. Although the food was quite good, the overall experience left a bad taste in our mouths. Probably will not return.

We decided to try this restaurant out because of the lamb on the menu. Unfortunately they ran out right before we got there . The restaurant is modern and clean. The service was excellent and very nice staff. My husband and I ordered the same sandwiches that come with mixed greens with vinaigrette. I asked for mine ion gluten free bread though since I have celiac. The food took quite a while for just sandwiches to come out. My husband liked his but both didn't have very much ham in them. They brought mine out with regular bread and I had to send it back. It came back out quickly but the bread was barely toasted so the gf bread fell apart instantly. Their mango tea was excellent.

I miss the old location!! It was so charming and welcoming. New location is much bigger so that's a plus.

Visited Banskia for the first time with a friend looking for something light to eat and possibly share. Between the two of us, that meant something gluten-free and vegan so we're quite the nightmare. Fortunately, it was not very busy at the time and the kitchen kindly modified one of the rotating dishes. The real standout, aside from the great service, were the espresso martinis - these will be bringing us back.

Cute place. I love the walls with the plants on them. You order at the counter and then they bring the food to you. It wasn't very busy so it came pretty fast. I ordered a sugar-free vanilla latte and eggs Benedict. Both were very good. The eggs Benedict wasn't quite what I'm used to. It was a little different maybe because it's an Australian place. It came with arugula salad which was fresh and very good as well. Note to self: always put your finger on the top of the bottle when you shake it because I didn't do that and the hot sauce went everywhere. Oops

Made my first trip to Banksia's new location on 12th street! Place your order at the bar, and they will give you a number and bring your food to your table. The new space feels much larger so there seems to be more seating! This should be helpful on the weekends if this location is as busy as the last! Highly recommend ordering some sweet pastries and sausage rolls to enjoy while you wait for the rest of your food. My favorite is still the lamb and harissa roll! The corn and zucchini fritters make an absolutely delicious breakfast. Super balanced plate, and it tastes delicious! The homemade bread using on the mushroom and beet toast is so tasty and sturdy under the delicious toppings. I appreciate how many vegetarian options they have. Street parking or paid garages/lots in this area of downtown, but Banksia is located exactly at the Metro Center streetcar stop, so it's very accessible from anywhere downtown.

Corn and zucchini fritters topped with a cruelly abused egg and accompanied by some very nice crispy bacon.

What are the gluten free options?

We have a huge selection, most of our breakfast menu can be made gluten free, all our sandwiches and all salads can be made gluten free. We have some delicious gluten free desserts as well.

Really like the look of this bakery, and Im looking for a place that makes great canelés. Does this bakery make them, and what did you think of them?

I have been there several times and I have never seen canelés. You could call and ask just to be sure but, they are pastries lean more towards the rustic side. Scones, breakfast quiches, muffins ,etc.

To step through its threshold is to surrender to the siren song of warmth that curls from the oven like a whispered secret. I have made it my pilgrimage to traverse the entirety of their menu, a culinary odyssey that has yielded no false steps, only a symphony of consistency that borders on the miraculous. Each offering, from the flaky, golden architecture of their pastries to the robust, honest comfort of their savory fare, is a testament to the artisan's hand. Here, affordability is not a sacrifice of quality but a generous invitation, a rare confluence where the exquisite meets the accessible. There is a certain magic in the air at McLain's, a sweetness that feels woven into the very fabric of the establishment. It is a place that understands the language of comfort, speaking it fluently in the dialect of a perfect crust or the rich, dark notes of a expertly pulled espresso. It is perhaps no surprise that such a bastion of authentic delight has garnered a reputation that extends far beyond our local borders; if the standard of excellence is high enough to grace the plate of Taylor Swift, then surely, it is more than enough for us, the grateful residents who claim this treasure as our own. Yet, beyond the flour-dusted counters and the glowing glass cases, my deepest admiration is reserved for their spirit. In a world that often measures worth in cold, transactional metrics, McLain's chooses to honor those who pour themselves into the future of our community. As a teacher, I feel that recognition in the small gestures, the welcoming nods, and the genuine appreciation they extend to educators. It is a profound kindness, a recognition that the work of shaping minds requires nourishment, both intellectual and literal. They understand that a classroom is a marathon, and they act as the essential pit stop, providing the fuel that keeps the light of inquiry burning bright. To dine at McLain's is to participate in a ritual of belonging. It is a place where the passage of time is marked not by the ticking of a clock, but by the turning of the oven trays. It is a reliable heartbeat in the neighborhood, steadfast and true, offering a reprieve from the clamor of the outside world. Whether one seeks a quiet moment of reflection over a cup of coffee or a celebratory feast that honors the simple, profound joy of eating well, McLain's remains an unrivaled steward of taste. It is not merely a bakery; it is the living, breathing soul of Waldo, a place where every bite serves as a reminder that some things in this life are exactly as good as they ought to be.

For the first time ever I used McLain's for catering and I'm officially bumping my review from 4 to…read more5 stars because honestly they did such a spectacular job at such a reasonable price I'm already wishing I had another excuse to order from them again! A few months ago my sister and I hosted a baby shower for our other sister and after looking around an options we decided to go with McLains. It was a smaller group, and we were doing a brunch theme, and our sister LOVES sweets. That paired with our desire to support local, and our shared love of McLains, this was just the most obvious choice. We ended up ordering a cake and first of all I have to say their cake flavor choices are insane - I think we settled on a chocolate cake with peanut butter filling (YUM), but I don't think you can go wrong here. We also ordered one of their pre-set pastry bundles for pick up and honestly everything was wonderful. I think I placed the order about a week out and it was ready when I came to pick it up. What pushed this experience into five star category for me? Just the friendliness of the staff, the serving tools they send you home with, and how thoughtful everyone was. The food was also really just exactly what we needed and it was so good there were hardly any leftovers, I think the kids cleared us out by lunch! At any rate, if you're on the hunt for a great spot to support for your next brunch event consider McLains - they won't let you down!
