Class is in session I have never had much success with wearing my hair curly. So for the longest time I just cut it short so I did not have to deal with it. I came back to her for a regular trim and a blow out because i loved the results of my perm the first time i came to her. This time She cut off all the length I had been growing for months saying she was thinning it, and I asked for a blow out but then proceeded to put relaxer in my hair and then charged me 175 for 40 minutes of a cut and an additional 75 for 5 minutes of relaxer that i didn't ask for. I then kindly reached out to her for a partial refund and she has refused to to do it. Completely dissatisfied and honestly devastated . I promise you'll regret going to her she tends to cut you off and get obviously annoyed if you try to say something about your hair not being to your liking. She laughs at her customers who request a refund and then ignores you. (She told me a story about another customer who asked for a refund as she was doing my hair). I hope everyone can see though her fake kindness in her replies, there's no remorse or accountability in her responses to customers who are rightfully upset. She has no experience and she over charges for every little thing. She does not use a diffuser because she believes in you leaving in your car and putting your air conditioner on and that's the way you dry curly hair , Seriously! If you ask for a tiny trim on ends she will charge her starting rate at 120 . She has bounced around to 3 places since I have known her in a very short time so that tells you a lot. I have been coming here for over 3 years now. Best decision for my hair I ever made. Doreen is a find for sure. She is unique in that she really does listen to what I want with my hair and doesn't do her own thing. I get exactly what I ask for as she listens. I have straight hair not curly and she does an excellent job not only on my cuts but the color and her highlights are excellent. What I like about her is she stays current in her field on the latest techniques and trends - always studying some new technique or taking a hands on class in LA or San Diego on the latest. This was a cute little space and Doreen was very friendly and nice. However, despite continuously saying that she knew how to handle people with "my kind of hair" (I have 3C curls) she did not handle them well. I typically use DevaCurl products, but Doreen suggested using a different type of product. I figured I'd trust her since she's the professional. The product she used dried out my hair almost instantly and left it frizzy. The cut itself was uneven and there were still so many dead ends left. I figured it would be ok once I washed it with my DevaCurl products, but it wasn't much better and it took over two weeks to get a good amount of moisture back in my hair. I'm sure Doreen does very well with less challenging and more naturally moisturized curls, but I wouldn't trust her with my hair again. read more

I had never cut my daughters hair therefore I wanted to find a person who knew how to cut curly hair as well as be able to make my daughter feel comfortable as she was getting her first hair cut. She braided her hair and cut atleast 10 inches which was a great length for locks of love, the foundation my daughter wanted to donate her hair to. After her hair was braided and cut, Doreen washed my daughters hair and styled it. My daughter was extremely happy as I was. FRAUD, FRAUD, FRAUD, FRAUD....... Read before you decide to go to this hair DESTROYER. So let me explain to everybody that reads this review. I was looking for a hair color specialist and I called Doreen and told her my situation with my daughters hair. ( daughters hair was already messed up from another hairstylist ). So Doreen said that she would take on the challenge and correct and fix my daughters hair. So the first appointment she did correct it and somewhat fix it, made it look more uniform then what it was. Doreen Had expressed to me and my daughter that she was so motivated now and was going to use my daughter as a model and we were like OK great. High Hopes, right..... Although was charged a very very high price but she did state that the next appointment would be free...... ( nothing in this world is for free ) A month later we go see Doreen the so-called hair specialist, she sees my daughter for two hours and then tells my daughter that she needs to go somewhere else because she cannot complete the job, so now she's made my daughters hair look even worse. Doreen would not even see me in person to express what she was not able to fix and even to tell me where to go next. Called her on her phone and she forgot that I was the customer and started getting rude, loud and talking a whole bunch of shit. She said that she was a failure she said that she couldn't handle the pressure and that she wanted me to go somewhere else she said that she would give me a refund to make me happier, I never asked for one but then when after listening to all her bullshit, I would take up that offer. she wouldn't answer her phone. Called multiple times even waited out front for her for about an hour after my daughter came outside. Many of her reviews are the same consistency of her not returning phone calls she is a terrible, horrible, hairstylist and we are going to report her to the BOARD.........This BITCH is a scammer fraud, she will start your hairstyle and not complete it..... I went to the deva cut website and decided to try Doreen out as I had moved too far from my original stylist. Doreen is a nice lady, but I was not happy with my appointments. I know everyone may have different experiences but here's mine. It's my first time seeing a curly stylist, and the first time she cut off way more than expected like 3-4 inches, and my hair was not damaged to merit the cut. I figured maybe I just communicated what I wanted not clearly, but the following 2 cuts I had to keep telling her to not cut too much I'm trying to grow it. You can see from her pictures that most everyone with curly hair has it cut short in the after picture. She was always pushing my appointments out because she was running late with previous appointments, and then I felt rushed leaving my appointments with hair that was not fully dried because the next client arrived. I live about 30 minutes away so pushing appointments out even later was not working with my schedule. When I first started seeing her she even forgot we had an appointment until I reached out to her to confirm. She does charge way more than other stylists as well. Most reviews I found were from years ago, so I thought I would share my recent experience, because if I knew she always ran late and didn't listen to what a client is asking I wouldn't have come. Like I mentioned this is my experience and may not be everyone else's. I could not message Doreen a response so I'll leave it here. Reviews are meant for others to see, social media is how people get the word out about their experiences so they can choose to visit a business. I did let you know along with in my review that you kept cutting too much. I mentioned in my appointments that my husband would text me, "how much longer I was going to be" because I had been gone so long. So yes I personally discussed this with you while in the chair. My wife went in to dye her hair and get highlights. She stated she wanted light brown hair and showed her a picture of the color she wanted her hair. The stylist acknowledged the request and then proceeded to dye my wife's hair dark black. After the mistake was realized, the stylist apologized and said "I guess I am not very good at listening". I understand that mistakes happen but that kind of statement is unprofessional and shows a lack of care regarding her customers. She did not even offer a discount for messing up my wife's hair. July 11 2018 I met Mrs. Curl Queen Doreen herself. I had been the same family hairdresser for 12 years. The past couple years I wanted to go lighter with my hair color... my hair was always Black. After he started working on it for 2 1/2 years I was ready for something new. I found Doreen from a good friends recommendation to try Deva Curl stylist. I started my search about 2 months I found good reviews about Doreen and met her. She explained on the phone she needs to see my hair and what an average cost would be depending on length, style cut etc. it was very fair. She analyzed my hair, my curls but areas and how this was going to be a PROCESS to get to a place when my hair would be healthy, shiny, back to manageable pretty curls., the picture posted it from my very 1st visit with her. I have been with Doreen for about a year and 5 months now. I will post next month an update of how my curls looks to date!! Amazing!!! I just would to let people know that when you reach out to a stylist the can't work magic in 1 session. They do the best but a continuation of professional consultation with product and guidance over time is where it is. Nobody gets Rich overnight..., it's a process. So when I see posts of people complaining about price or they didn't get the attention on demand they needed they should really reevaluate what they need... a professional will be booked, will need time to get back to you because they are in demand with MANY clients.... so if you are looking for someone that will invest the time in you to make your curls look beautiful, healthy and strong ..... I have been going to Doreen for 15 years. If I didn't think she was above and beyond and knowing her job to the fullest extent I would not have been going to her this long. She is patient and very knowledgeable. She does continuous education yearly so she is up-to-date on the newest techniques and products etc. She is always booked at least two months out so you need to make your appointments the day you leave for the future months. I have recommend several people to her and they have switched from their hairdresser to her because she does a great job on cut, color, curl, Japanese & Brazilian Brazilian BlowOut. She will even call you if somebody has a cancellation to see if you would like to fill that slot. I love the fact that she goes out of her way/ above and beyond to do something like this when in fact she is extremely busy. She always takes care of her clients and is very passionate about her job. I was so excited to finally find someone who could really understand my hair - I have super curly ringlets but the top of my hair is going straight! A nightmare! My first cut with Doreen was great. I went back to get the top part of my hair permed to match the bottom. Not only did the perm not take, Doreen did not wash the perm solution out properly and I smelled like perm solution for months. Then to make matters worse while I was sitting in her chair with the perm solution on she made a negative comment about lesbians. Little did she know I'm one of those bad lesbians!! After reading reviews, it looks like Doreen has a "holier than thou" narsasistic attitude. The pictures show a lot of 80s inspired lion's head hair styles, nothing modern. They look too angular, too top heavy for young girls.i don't write a lot of reviews but when I feel violated or that others are violated, I feel compiled. I won't trust her. I had a horrible experience two years ago with a stylist that knew nothing about curly hair. I finally decided to take the plunge and, after extensive research, I found Doreen. When you get to the building, she is inside and down the left hall (you can find her by the sign over her door). She welcomed me warmly and asked what I was looking for with my hair. I told her I needed something manageable, but my hair lacked curl definition and volume, despite using the DevaCurl products. After touching my hair for a bit, she told me part of the problem was that my hair was thin on the ends and thick at the roots. That meant the gel I was using was pulling my curls down. She trimmed me up and fixed my bangs I was growing out before washing my hair. We both discovered my hair had held on to some of the shampoo and she recommended I swap the No Poo for Low Poo Cleanser so it would come out easier. She then introduced me to the No Frizz mousse (that I promptly bought after my visit) which really helped lock my curls into place. She then educated me on how to pin my hair for volume and we chatted about hair tips as we wrapped up. She was so warm and inviting that I will most certainly go to her again. Use your first DevaCut to get the education on how to care for your curls (the length of my hair ran my cost to $145). Next time, though, I'll get the Deva-To-Go cut since it's quicker and cheaper at $85. But for the experience and wisdom, the price was well worth it. read more

Doreen's been my hairstylist for several years. She's always done a great job and goes above and beyond to satisfy her customers. So, I'm really surprised to read some of the previous reviews from clients. Maybe, they were just having a bad day?! I would not take a small child here. I took my daughter who is 3.5 and Doreen did not seem interested at all in taking her time or giving my child the patience that she needed. I felt completely ripped off. I was charged $55 for her to cut off literally 3 strands of my daughters hair. That is what she called a trim. I insisted that she Co wash it so that I could feel a little better about spending the money and driving all the way out there. She spent maybe 5 minutes showing me that. 15 minutes of attention later and $60 gone, I said this is clearly something I can do myself. Don't waste your money if you are thinking of bringing a child. She could have said this doesn't look like it will work and turned me away, but she did the very very near minimum and spent literally maybe 15 minutes on my daughter and charged me full price.
