Imagine showing up for your appointment and getting cancelled. I booked the wash and go which was apparently for returning clients only. The morning of the appointment he said new clients need to get a haircut. I just had one a few months ago so it wasn't needed. But he insisted new clients need one. I was already omw to the appointment so I agreed because I wouldn't be able to find another stylist on such short notice(the haircut was an additional $325)- and then he cancelled because he felt "awkward". Here's the thing. This salon knows how to cut curly hair and knows how to provide useful and helpful tips to manage curly hair. However the service I received outweighs the quality in my experience. I've only gone to this place twice. The first time I went she didn't even know she had an appointment until I called her and texted her so many times until FINALLY getting a response. She had mixed up the dates of my appointment. She arrived 20 minutes later, then I had to wait another HOUR to get into the salon because the Door wasn't opening. I still proceeded to complete my appointment and at the end of it she STILL charge me full price after being late to the appointment and the whole door situation. As a client, I don't feel my needs were met because of the unpreparedness and lack of consideration of the stylist when it came to the overall experience. The second time I went because I decided to give another this place another chance. Prior to arriving to my appointment I texted my stylist to confirm we were still meeting that day. STILL that day she arrived 20 minutes later. During the session she asked me if I had received a reminder email. I said of course I received it, I just wanted to make sure she was ready also. She then proceeded to BLAME the CLIENTS for getting confused on the dates. And again I was utterly disappointed that she made those comments being that the first time she completely forgot about my initial appointment. The reason I have given 2 stars is because both times my hair came out amazing. But I'm one that values an overall experience. The left picture is what I showed him and asked for, the right is what my hair looks like now. I have never colored my hair before so I was really nervous to come in and get it done but as this was my second time with Sergio I had some sort of relief that he would do well by me. But as you can see from the pictures he didn't give me what I wanted at all. It was growing on me a tiny bit after two or three days but ultimately I still didn't like it PLUS it got coppery. I just hate it now. Sergio told me that I could text him if I thought the color was too light or if it got coppery so I could come back in and have him tone it down, but I have now texted him 4 times and he still hasn't responded-- he has his read receipts on so I know he's seeing those texts!!!! I'm super attached to my hair so it looking like this is causing me real self esteem and confidence issues. I'm so extremely disappointed it turned out like this because Sergio seemed like a really nice guy but after this experience and after reading some of the other similar reviews about them not responding and being so unprofessional, I'm completely turned off and will never be returning here again. read more

As a young curly girl, I used to fear the scissors because no one was able to give me a nice cut. I went through the phase of straightening my hair and finally trying to go natural. For a couple of years my hair was still not growing, so finally I decided to do the big chop. I'm so glad I did. Sergio was amazing. He took the time to inform me how to style my hair (put all product on when your hair is soaking wet, whaaaaat!!!). He was wonderful, knowledgeable, and easy to speak to. I've been natural all my life but have never really loved my curls- they are all over the place with so many different textures and patterns- curly to kinky curly. Honestly I was so disappointed in the fact the neither one of these hair stylist even got back to me about any available openings for a appointment. They really dont even deserve 1 star or 1/2 a star. I think it is so disgusting and so unprofessional to not of heard anything back from either one as many times as I tried to reach them, especially when I emailed Sergio personally explaining my situation and needing a appointment if at all possible for my Engagement Photos. If it wasn't possible that's completely understandable but why no effort to contact me and let me know!? To think how excited I was to find this Salon and be let down in such a big way. Sergio is amazing! He now has a client for life. I was EXTREMELY nervous and anxious before my appointment. I have never worn my hair down natural, I live in ponytails and buns. After reading all the great reviews, and seeing his work on Instagram, I figured if he can't get my curls looking right, then no one could. He put me at ease immediately, and listened to my fears, concerns and desires. From the moment he started working on my hair, he began teaching me about products, my curl patterns (I have about 3-4 different textures), and techniques. He didn't use an assistant, he was with me the whole time so the level of care and attention was on another level. We came up with a plan for how I can achieve my long term curly hair goals and at the end he wrote out all the products he used so I didn't have to remember anything. He also told me that if, for some reason, my hair didn't come out the same that I could text or email pictures and he would give me pointers. Sergio is so invested in his clients aka "his curly girls" and I left feeling beautiful, appreciated and more confident. I've been holding off on writing this review for a long time since I was hoping I would grow into the color I was given but 2 months later, I still hate it. I wanted my hair pintura colored (DevaCurl's curl-safe version of color) for my birthday, which is in mid-October. I had been eyeing another popular curly hair salon in LA who is practically known for their beautiful pintura highlights for a long time but their soonest appointment wasn't until late January and I did not want to wait that long so I decided to go with Curls LA in spite of their sparse reviews. I scheduled my appointment through their mandatory online system for a week out from the time of booking which was 3 days before my birthday. I made my appointment with Ashley. Just a disclaimer that this review is in not a bash of Ashley personally as she was decently friendly and accommodating throughout my entire appointment. However, the results I received couldn't be more different than what I asked her for. I wanted an all-over orangey copper color as shown in the image below. When I showed her the image, she told me that achieving that color would take multiple sessions over a year time span and that the woman's hair in the photo I showed her was lightened gradually over time, which I knew for a fact was untrue given I watched the YouTube video of the coloring process for the woman getting her hair done which was done in 1 session and her hair was previously just as black as mine. She told me I'd be better off just getting pintura highlights of that color, which I agreed to because I could tell at that point it wasn't going to turn out right and I figured something is better than nothing. At the end of it all, I came out with the darkest burgundy color as shown in the photo below, which isn't remotely what I asked for. My friends and family who I had shown the picture of what I wanted prior to going were shocked when they saw me because they didn't even notice a difference unless I stood in direct light, which is super disappointing considering the pintura highlights cost $200+. She told me it would get lighter over time and I could always come back for more sessions where we could go lighter, but who has the time and money for that when I know I could've gotten what I wanted in 1 session? Overall I am very very unsatisfied. I figured I could grow to like the burgundy but I have truly grown to hate it and can't wait to dye my hair back black. I can't speak to any of her other skills or service offerings, but if you're looking for color, I highly recommend you choose another place. read more

BEWARE - I booked an appointment here in December and switched the dates on their website to Jan due to having COVID. On the old date in DEC, the hairdresser advised that I was still on the calendar on her side. They charged me FULLY $400 for the service even when I sent her screenshots of the appointment on my side ad my calendar. She said she would credit me back but never answered my texts back etc when I asked for details. I disputed the charge on my card and they are fighting it. Love this place, Sergio is my new hairstylist! He is really skilled in all things "Curly Girl" and has the level 3 (highest) certification as a DevaCurl stylist. That's what led me to him, after a search on the DevaCurl website looking for a specialist in curly hair. I believe he used to work at the DevaChan salon before it went under. Sergio is literally the first person who has ever "gotten" my natural hair! I was always just expected to want to blow out/straighten my hair. He knows how to really work with what you have and get the best results with your naturally curly hair so it's bouncy and flouncy. Prices are up there but definitely worth it. I've been here twice now, it's a studio inside Salon Republic. It's gotten really homey and charming since Sergio and Ashley first opened it. I'll definitely be back. read more

Overall seems inexperienced in cutting 3c hair. Cut my part crooked and cut a box shape in my pixie. All of this for a whopping $325, which is the price for first timers. I decided to have the sides buzzed (even though it was insisted "i think about it") to at least flaunt a new style for the money. I only returned so that she can fix what she created. Luckily, half the price the 2nd time. When I showed a pic yet again of what I wanted including an old pic of me, she was defensive and said "it's not my work." Also kept trimming the top even though I insisted I liked the length. A month a half after this 2nd cut though, it is growing out nicely this time, the part isn't crooked, and an improvement in shape. Here's the story... I booked an appointment with Sergio online through the curls.la website on 5/18/19 for the Fourth of July. This would have been my third appointment with him. I went to him twice in 2018. I have a vacation planned from 7/5-7/9 and I'm off work on the 4th so that was the only day that worked for me to get my hair done. I do not work or live near the Curls.la salon and it's an hour drive for me to get there, so I had to plan WAY in advance. Pretty much, I planned my whole week around this hair appointment. My appointment was set for 4pm. I thought it was odd that the website advertised the salon as being open on the Fourth of July, however, the day was open in their appointment calendar so... I went ahead and booked an appointment. If you're thinking "duh, no one works on the Fourth of July!" That isn't true. I have known nail and hair stylists/barbers to work on the Fourth of July up until a certain time. You can't always be sure and I wasn't, so, I went on a quest to verify my appointment. And a quest, it truly was. In order to confirm that the salon was open that day but not lose my appointment, I contacted the salon by phone with the number listed for Sergio, however he didn't answer. I sent him a text. He did not respond. I also called Ashley, the other stylist that he works with in the same salon. She did not answer her phone as well, or call me back. Lastly, I sent Sergio a direct message via Instagram, that until this very moment he has not read. There was absolutely no way of contacting this stylist where I can get a response to verify if the stylist was actually working on the Fourth of July or if it was a glitch in the system. Today, 4 business days until my appointment, I get an email from Sergio's assistant Steven saying that they apologize but the salon will not be open on the Fourth of July and would like to reschedule my appointment. Well thanks for letting me know LAST MINUTE that my appointment is canceled!!! I asked them to accommodate me with giving me an appointment on July 3rd later in the afternoon. After several email exchanges explaining myself, my vacation timeframe, the distance of where I live/work and the fact that this was THEIR MISTAKE, they agree to give me an appointment on July 3rd but only at 5 o'clock pm. I told them I wouldn't get there in time because of work and I needed something 6 or later. They said their 6 o'clock slot was already taken and they wouldn't take anything after that. I asked them to make a special adjustment for me this time under the circumstances. They refused and sent me back to the DevaCurl website to find another stylist. I will never again attempt to, or give them my business. If you're looking for a reliable Deva stylist/salon, look elsewhere. read more

YES. FINALLY. Thank god for CurlsLA. My hair has been long for FOREVER and I LOVE my curls. I was reluctant to get it cut, being nervous that it might look terrible but after reading such amazing reviews I was sold on this place. The website made booking super easy and they sent me an email reminder a couple days before the cut. Sergio made me feel amazing and knew so much about hair it blew my mind. Not only did he make me feel welcome and comfortable but he won me over with his warm personality and kindness. He's adorable and so easy to talk to. My hair looks AMAZING and feels great. It's so light and I can't stop shaking my head around. It feels like my curls finally got to wake up and get out of bed. She was funny and kind, and very open to hearing about what I currently do with my hair and what my goals are; she used that to guide me towards a cut that made sense, and explained what she was doing every step of the cut and styling process. My hair looks great. It is a small studio (just Sergio and Ashley, as far as I can tell) which meant that since I got there early I had to wait in the hall for a little bit since no one was there. But the building is nice and I messed around on my phone for ten minutes, so whatever. I was so hesitant to go because my whole life i thought I just had wavy hair, but after my appointment I had curls i didn't know existed. My life is 100% better because I know how to fix my hair now thanks to Sergio's advice. As a Latina, there aren't many people who know how to work with Latina curls which are different if you're not afro-latina or african-american, but Sergio knows how. He also didn't overly think my hair and fixed years of bad hair cuts. This guy is so well versed in curly hair, he needs an award. While I didn't get to work with Ashley, she did my friend's hair and it was equally as stunning. They both are so skilled at what they do. I saw Sergio for my first ever DevaCut about 3 weeks ago. I was certainly nervous and uneasy about cutting my hair, but Sergio eased me. Listened to all my concerns, gave plenty of information on how to care for my hair, thoroughly walked me through each step and consistently checked in throughout the process to make sure I was okay with everything being done to my hair. I took all of Sergio's advice/guidance and I absolutely love my hair now! It is so healthy and has given me so much confidence! It has even grown out a bit. I will admit that I did have some difficulty adjusting to the length (I've never had short hair in my life; cut about 3+ inches), but that went away very shortly after. I'm so frustrated with this place I could cry! I wish I could evaluate this business based on its DevaCut abilities, but they really don't want my business! It's such a bummer because I was really looking forward to getting my hair done. First red flag: No reminders from their email system or a phone call. I booked about a month online out because that's the soonest I could get an appointment. I feel like it's standard practice for a reminder to call for an appointment the day before-- dentists, vets, hair stylists all do this regularly. Especially if you're booking so far in advance. Not this place! Especially for a DEVAcut-- you are usually instructed how the stylist prefers you to wear your hair to the appointment. Day of the appointment: I was unsure if I had an appointment, but went to the salon at the appointment time. Turns out there are TWO locations. This was obviously partly my confusion, but the shopping center I went to had one of those car washes you can drop your car off while you shop. I did that so when I went upstairs to the salon and discovered the mixup I let them know that by the time the car wash was done and I had reached the new location, I'd be unable to make the appointment. The reception handled all of this and about 10 minutes later Ashley called me but I missed the call. Her voicemail was very muffled/odd and she said to text her back or call. I texted her as I was in the middle of a store at the moment that I wouldn't be able to get in by the next appointment and if we could reschedule for a different day because I had an extremely painful foot injury that day and my schedule was so tight. I waited 20 minutes and no response then called but no answer. Without confirming, she just canceled the appointment and said it would charge me $75. It's so infuriating! Why would I pay that AND pay $150 for an appointment later? Who would do that? There are other DevaCut places to go to in LA... I recommend looking there before having to deal with what was very bizarre and unprofessional service. read more

I got a devaCut here recently and it was amazing. I had Ashley, who really listened to me when I asked her to keep my hair as long as possible while cutting off all the dead ends. She didn't cut too much and I still walked out of there with length to my hair!!! She even tried out a lengthening product on my hair to see if it would prevent some of the curl shrinkage on my hair. Wow...don't change appts with this salon. They have an online system, but change too many apps (changed appts plenty of time in advance of scheduled appts) and blamo, they block from their site and you cannot schedule any future appts. I'm a conscientious customer. I missed one appt, I called and offered to pay. If I need to reschedule, I do so in plenty of time in advance...not 24 hours prior, not even 48 hours prior...I give plenty of time. I understand being self employed. I'm self employed. I respect time and schedules. I get that. The redness from this salon, I do not get. Me thinks these two Stylists are too big for their britches. read more

I was apprehensive as it took him a week to answer my text, assuming he was a Prima Donna stylist - in fact he's very down to earth, chatty, friendly and completely put me at ease! I've been to several Deva stylists and although the cut is always good, In terms of curls, i've often been so disappointed by the style and shape of the cut, feeling the stylist doesn't get my personality at all. Terrible!!!! For what they charge you'd expect people who are competent with their colors. I asked Sergio to take make my brown a few shades lighter and he turned my hair orange with a few strands of platinum. He rushed me out of the shop and told me to text him with any questions. I spent the next week freaking out about my hair and texting him every single day until he finally decided to respond six days later. When he finally gave my an appointment to fix what he done, he made me wait for an hour and a half before ruining my hair YET AGAIN. This time I walked out fried curls, gray color where the platinum had been, and an ugly brown everywhere else. I am shocked that someone charging $265 for a trim and highlight could be so ignorant at how to properly treat hair, and that on top of that he ignores his clients until it's convenient for him to respond.
