I've relaxed and flat-ironed my hair for most of my life and, honestly, I never prioritized my hair at all. I went to Great Clips for trims... that's how much I avoided dealing with it. Last week, I was scrolling Instagram and came across Curlture Salon. I was intrigued (and thank God I was). From the moment I walked in for my appointment, I felt genuinely welcomed. Ellicia at the front desk took the time to thoroughly explain my treatment, answered my questions with patience, and offered me coffee and water, which immediately made me feel comfortable and cared for. The stylist I had originally booked with was feeling under the weather, so I was greeted by Quinn, the founder and owner of the salon. I truly believe things happen for a reason, because I could not have been in better hands. Quinn was warm, knowledgeable, and incredibly present. She took the time to really listen to my hair story, my concerns, and my goals. Before touching my hair, she made sure I felt heard and understood. We started with a dry cut, and she was very intentional, especially after I shared that keeping my length was important to me. She never rushed, never overcut, and made thoughtful decisions every step of the way. Quinn personally performed every treatment on my hair, and the level of care and attention she gave was unmatched. She explained exactly what she was doing, why she was doing it, and even had me feel my hair throughout the process so I could understand the changes happening in real time. What once felt brittle, dry, and lifeless slowly transformed into hair that was soft, healthy, and silky. She consistently checked in with me, made sure I was comfortable, and gently reassured me, especially when I wasn't fully convinced the process would work. When she finished and turned me toward the mirror, a wave of emotion hit me, and then both of us. For the first time in my life, I felt confident about my hair. I felt free. I felt empowered. I finally felt like I could take care of my hair on my own and be proud of it. Beyond the transformation itself, the salon is absolutely beautiful. The chairs are incredibly comfortable, and during treatments they offer heated and weighted blankets (I chose both and highly recommend it). Curlture is also an educational salon, which speaks volumes about Quinn and her team. Not only are clients learning about their own hair and how to care for it properly, but apprentices and interns are actively learning as well. That level of mentorship, intention, and commitment to education is rare and so important, especially in the curly hair world where truly skilled stylists are hard to find. Terrible customer service the second THEY mess up. I was a customer for over 3 years here and this last appointment they decide to email me a reminder (TO A MISSPELLED EMAIL) instead of call me as is my preferred contact and method and how they've always done for my prior appts. The one time I don't show bc I didn't KNOW I was booked due to their error- the front desk worker refuses any sort of first time courtesy waiver despite me pointing out they used the incorrect form of contact. I verbally told her she did not have permission to charge my card and she said the card would be charged anyway. Their appointments are expensive $200-300 -so a full charge penalty is not a casual deal. Spent close to $2000 here in a just a few years and always tipped 20% on appointments- but clearly their customer service doesn't value customer loyalty and long term customer spending over eating the cost of ONE missed appointment that THEY messed up reminding for. I'm not being dramatic when I say that Curlture has changed my life. I have struggled with my hair my entire life. It's thick, frizzy, with curls going every which way. Most of my life my hair has been up in a bun because most hairdressers don't want to deal with my hair. Curlture truly took my insecurities and turned them into appreciation for my hair. They completely brought out my natural curls, hydrated them, and styled them beautifully. Best of all, they taught me how to do it myself every step of the way. As soon as I saw myself I wanted to cry, I was so happy with how my hair looked! I've been trying to grow my hair and she has been able to maintain the length while shaping my curls to perfection. She is also super attentive and nice to talk to. I was interested in trying something different from my regular routine (Deva-type cuts elsewhere). A colleague recommended Curlture, and after months of going back and forth over spending $300 for a cut and "experience," I decided to bite the bullet. The salon is nice and bright, easy to find, and everyone was very friendly. The stylist, Laura, spent lots of time asking and answering questions. She then trimmed my hair and washed, conditioned it. She talked about getting my hair into curl "families," which was informative. Actually, all the info was overwhelming, so it was good to get a follow-up email. She then dried my hair with both a Dyson and under the dryer. There was very little frizz and the curls were sleek. I'm not a big fan of the first day curl look; I prefer a more tousled look, but it was fine. As a parting gift I was given a satin pillowcase, a scrunchie, and a "potato sack" (I think) hair towel. I'm pretty knowledgeable about curly hair, but I have a hard time getting consistent results. For all the stylist's talk about product and build up, she admitted I had very little. She encouraged me to buy some of their product, Innersense, and I bought two items. I got the distinct impression that my product (Bounce) just isn't that great. I made another appointment for a few months later, as they recommend quarterly visits. My wallet was $450 lighter. My next appointment would be $155. A few days later I was looking at Innersense products on Amazon and noticed they have two different curly hair gels. I couldn't remember which was used at the salon, so I emailed, responding to the follow-up email I got from the owner. No one responded. I dunno, but it seems to me that for $450 (plus an upcoming $155), I should get a response. It really rubbed me the wrong way. After much consideration, I canceled the next visit and have decided to go back to my regular hairdresser, who only charges $80 for a dry cut (with a wash and condition). And my last haircut with her lasted a year, so I think that's pretty good. I usually go twice a year, but the pandemic got in the way. I did learn a lot, and would say the info part is worthwhile if you don't know how to deal with curly hair. But after spending almost $500 in one visit, and they can't be bothered to answer a simple email question, well, that's a door I won't be darkening again. read more

writing this review way way late, as my appointment was a little over a month ago, but it's mostly been due to lack of being able to really put down into words how appreciative I am of this salon. I've struggled with my curly hair all my life, I love it to death but have always dealt with major tangles, dryness, and frizz. High school me dyed it, had it botched by a stylist and ended up with platinum blonde hair because of how long she left the bleach in. It's been through a lot of mistreatment, but in the recent years I've been really trying to focus on getting it healthy and learning how to style it. There were so many impressive aspects of this salon, and I have absolutely zero complaints about my appointment whatsoever. Something that was really neat, and I've never experienced, was how hands on each employee was with all the clients. They told me at the beginning that all different people would be touching my hair - and throughout the appointment different stylists would come over to help, and suggest products or treatments etc. I was also shown every step, and provided with an emailed copy of every step / detailed instructions on washing procedures. Seeing it, and being able to 'feel' for what my hair should feel like through every step absolutely changed everything for me. In the past, I've been given a hard time by stylists about having tangles in my hair (even though I always wash before my appointments) - in a very embarrassing moment, there was a large tangle in my hair as they were combing. I felt terribly, even telling them they could cut it out if they wanted. One of the stylists, Love, assured me that this is just how my hair IS. The texture of it just naturally has tangles, regardless of how recently I washed it. Through and through I was taught how to work with my hair, how to put clips in to dry it with volume, and the exact products my hair needs. Thank you all SO much for your patience, your willingness to teach & encourage my exploration of my hair, and for just being absolutely incredible I am so beyond excited for my next appointment. This is truly a curly haven! Everyone here is not only knowledgeable but also so hospitable. I love that the salon is a team dynamic rather than the typical stylist/client relationship. That being said, I had Laura for my curl revival package and she is incredible. We talked over my current routine, addressed what my hair goals are, did a dry cut and then went into full spa mode. The chairs at the washing station can lay you completely flat and I was offered a choice of fuzzy, heated, or weighted blanket to use during the hour long detox and revival process. It was amazing! Because it was my first time there, Laura took me through my new routine step by step and even offered a mirror so that I could watch what she was doing. After the full process and at checkout I was gifted a bag of clips, a satin pillow case, a towel for my hair, and a satin scrunchy. I've been to this salon a number of times and I never tire of the experience. The salon is bright, spacious, beautiful and very well appointed. When was the last time you were offered a selection of blankets when you sat in the chair to have your hair washed? Probably never? Well, they do it here. How about an offer of water, tea or coffee? And the coffee rivals any coffee shop, and the cream was foamed on top! I've seen both Quinn and just this week Laura. Both are pro's, spending lots of time getting my hair perfect. Cutting curly hair is so different than any other type of cut. I always leave having learned some new little trick. I found this salon on Instagram while desperately searching for someone who really understands curly hair after a year plus of growing out my Keratin treatment-- success! Quinn is amazing, and it's well worth the drive from SF to Santa Rosa and back! I wasn't sure it was worth the cost of the initial appointment, but gave it a shot and I'm glad I did. Quinn cuts each curl individually when your hair is dry and then does touch ups after a wash and dry. My curls have never looked so good, and I love the style! Plus, she and her team really take the time to explain how to care for your hair and use the products. I was skeptical about the products/process, but I've been converted to that, as well. Very clean and love the ascetic 2) Stylist: Lydia, if I can give her more than 5 stars I would - throughly walks you through the process and listens what your hair goal is - if you tell her you don't want a big chop, she wont do it. I always had that fear going to a stylist they would cut too much. Quin is clearly a master of the art of curly hair. I had long wavy hair past my bottom and was ready for a change and to see how much body I could squeeze out of my coarse wavy hair. Turns out a lot when you're taught how to manage your hair type. The salon is located in a complex with plenty of parking and is tastefully decorated. The two-plus hour Curl Revival Package appointment started with Quinn assessing the condition of my hair and asking what I was looking to change. I told her I wanted a big cut with some layers and reduction of frizz. Most stylists have been a bit intimidated to work on or cut my long hair. Not Quinn. She looked it it like da Vinci eyeing a piece of marble and went to work while walking me through what she was doing and why. I asked tons of questions. No, seriously, I asked her a lot of questions and she answered all of them. Education is a big part of your first appointment so if you're wondering if the time and money is worth it, it is! Once my hair was cut, she took me back to the bowl for a hair detox treatment which included something I could only describe as a steam like a hair facial before wrapping my hair up with a wrap and pulling the curtain so I had privacy while it worked it's magic for ten minutes. She has THE most comfortable wash station ever - think airline first class. This is where the real education started - she came back with a lightweight hand-held mirror and walked me through each step of how to wash and condition my hair and then how to add product. I watched in the mirror and she was sure to show me how much product to use. Honestly, I've been to a lot of salons in my lifetime and I've never received an education like this. She even had me touch my hair at different stages so I would know how it should feel. As someone that has watched her share of curl girl YouTube videos, I was surprised by how many things I wasn't doing right. Quin patiently explained ALL of it. After taking me back to the chair and showing me more tips on how to style, she put me under the dryer. After drying she showed me how to perform the finishing touches and I about fell out of my seat when she was done - I had beautiful wavy/curly hair with NO frizz. I was sent away with a little gift bag of things to get me going, along with product recommendations. Sweet! No, not going to say what's in the bag - some of your visit should be a surprise! Check out was a snap and although I felt like it was a leap of faith trying a new salon and stylist with a healthy price tag, it was the best decision ever. When I asked to add on a tip, I was told they are gratuity free! The price is reasonable when you consider not tipping, getting a full education, and being given a gift bag.
