Decided to try Curra's Grill for dinner as the black cherry margarita came highly recommended. They specialize in traditional Interior Mexican favorites and new creative cuisines. When we arrived at the restaurant, parking was plentiful and we were seated quickly. We had a reservation because it was Mother's Day but there was no wait. We were greeted promptly and seated. It just so happened to be happy hour as they have HH every day of the week from 3-6 pm. As it was my first time visiting the establishment, I asked the waiter for recommendations and he gave us some of the most popular food items from their extensive menu. I started with a black cherry margarita on the rocks with tajin and mezcal. It had a good smoky and sweet flavor profile. Second drink was a frozen blackberry margarita with tajin, The frozen option was the way to go, I could taste the muddled blackberries in the drink and the flavor was spot on. We started with the elote, roasted corn on the cob, Valentina, goat cheese, chili salt. In my opinion, these seemed like frozen cobs and could have used some cojeta cheese topping. Next tried the tacos al pastor with pork cooked on a rotisserie served with cilantro, onions, pineapple & avocado. The tacos were not served with any avocado which might have been why the meat was a bit dry and bland. It was served with a green salsa, but definitely needed the avocado to enhance the flavor profile. Enchiladas con Chile Colorado with corn tortillas filled with Monterey Jack cheese and smothered with pork tips that have been simmered in guajillo & chipotle sauce. It was served with refried black beans topped with cojita cheese and Spanish rice. This was definitely the stand out with the rich flavor profile of the sauce. cheesiness, tenderness of the pork. Overall, great atmosphere, generous portion sizes. Although some dishes missed the mark, I would return to try other classic Mexican food items and try the Margarita flight! read more

Had high hopes but got let down there and 24 hours later. Got the Huevos Curras, queso, and avocado margarita. Queso and chips were good. The margarita was very refreshing and would recommend The Huevos Curras was the let down. The carve guisada was good but not great. The sauce was pretty bland but where it fell short was the sauce was cool and the meat was cold. And I don't mean cool mean, like 50-60 degrees from storage. It hadn't been reheated correctly. I ate it anyway but should have sent that back. Boy am I paying the price 24 hours later. 24 hours for bacteria to build in my stomach and now I'm spending the day with stomach cramps and diarrhea. Being the only place I ate yesterday, the confidence is high of the food poisoning. I know it's a mistake on their end but they need to know of one the cooks and kitchen managers need to know proper cooling, heating, and service. read more

Curra's Grill was founded all the way back in 1995. The location sits on a small tiny lot off East Oltrof between S. Congress and I-35. This small location runs a great Mexican food restaurant with a variety of menu options. I would consider the food menu less Tex-Mex with a wider variety. Fajitas are great, delicious migas, lots of enchilada dishes. variety of tacos and a wide selection of Mexican style dishes. I highly recommend ordering the Salsa Sampler which is a collection of every single sauce the kitchen serves up. Mole sauce is very bold along with their fire habanero sauce. Alcoholic drinks and margaritas are served strong. Happy hour 3-6pm specials for $7 margs r& appetizers run any day. The seating is available inside or outside on the shaded patio. It has a simple low key style of the restaurant where it still offers great cooking. Parking lot is a bit small but there is plenty of extra parking on the side street. Been meaning to try this Austin staple for a while & finally got around to it. We came on a Sunday around noon and were seated immediately. Getting the menu, you can tell that this is not really a "hole in the wall" place, but more of an established location. The decor inside was very nice & colorful inside too. The biggest downside that we noticed was that they did not have complimentary chips and salsa (like you may come to expect at a more mom & pop type of Mexican restaurant). We weren't looking to pay for the whole salsa sampler (even though it did look interesting). The food was a mixed review for us - my partner really liked his plan chicken enchiladas topped with queso, but I was a little mixed on the shrimp enchiladas (with pineapple both on top of and inside the tortilla). We came into Curra's the Monday after Grand Prix weekend when all restaurants seems overbooked. We were seated immediately for a late lunch around 1-2pm. Staff were very fast and attentive and explained the menu for us. This was very different than what we're used to with California-Mexican food. The spice level is intense, but we really enjoyed the bright flavors as well. The dishes might have been a tad too spicy for us, and we have decent spice tolerance, but we'd come back just to try more of their menu. I ordered the patos en mole tacos, and my dad got the cochinita pixel, both so flavorful and satisfying. We would definitely come back. read more

Seriously underrated gem off the beaten path from the visiting hoards of Austin in Travis Heights. The Avocado Margarita is by far the healthiest way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. This was my first time at Curra's but I will definitely be back! Our waitress was so kind and our food came out quick. We ordered the guacamole to start with and it was fresh and flavorful. I love it when family and friends visit Austin and we get together for a lite afternoon snack and beverages with authority. It has been awhile since I've been to Curra's and some friends were in town so I suggested that we meet at Curra's Grill, one of my favourite Mexican restaurants. I started off with a Cadillac Margarita. We munched on chips and salsa until the fried lamb empanadas, served with a chipotle cream sauce arrived. They were quite tasty but a little on the small side.  For my main course, I opted for the Cancun Relleno, poblano pepper stuffed with large shrimp sauteed with green bell peppers, pineapple and guajillo peppers and topped with chipotle cream and Monterey Jack cheese, served with rice and refried red beans. read more

Really awesome Mexican Spot. The ambiance is fun and relaxed and the booths are super comfy. The chips were thick and actually salty, which is a surprising plus because usually the thicker chips don't deliver on flavor. The salsa was really good too. It was spicy without being painful. The enchiladas were delicious, service was fine. I look forward to exploring more of the menu. I'm surprised this place has such low ratings. I wouldn't have known about this place, though it's apparently a classic, except a friend wanted to come here for the cochinita pibil. It was amazing... and not just the pork, but the plantains and even the black beans that came with it - and trust me, I'm not a bean guy. Service was decent, ambiance is that of a typical neighborhood restaurant, but the outdoor patio is great when the weather's nice. Weird thing is once we asked for a couple of extra flour tortillas to go with some leftovers once and they charged us like 20 cents for them... seemed penny pinching considering how much we'd spent on food and drinks. I wasn't supposed to write a review, Hope doesn't want this place to get crowded. It's definitely nice that we've been able to park in the parking lot when we come after rowing on Sunday mornings, but the cochinita pibil is just too tasty not to write about. There are a decent amount of TexMex options in Austin, and unfortunately I don't think I'll be coming back to Curra's anytime soon. Came on a Friday evening and seating was quick and easy which is surprising for new-age trendy Austin. The vibes are immaculate for the no-frills, all-fun mexican dive bar restaurant. Unfortunately, the food is generally lackluster. The salsa that comes with the chips are watery and flavorless. We ordered queso as well which tasted off (not unsanitary off - just not good, off). I'm a basic b for enchiladas and usually they're an impossible food to mess up, but I also left feeling super disappointed. The one shining ray of hope was the Pozole soup - warm, hearty, perfectly balanced flavor to warm the soul on a cold day. The server was really nice and I wanted to love Curra's given how easy it is to get in and the chill no F***s given vibe, but the food just doesn't stack up against so many options around town (Maudies, Fresas, Polvos, Rositas, Pueblo Viejo, El Alma, etc.). read more

Curra's Grill has over 1200 reviews with the vast majority being 4-5 stars. I ask myself "what am I missing?" that *everyone* seems to love (almost revere) this establishment. Multiple accolades abound and yet as a long time local I avoided Curra's like the plague...until last week when I was reminded why my last visit over 20 years ago wasn't a fluke. Curra's Grill is severely overrated. Review after review gushes about a great atmosphere, great food, and terrific service and yet what appears on your plate is a bad facsimile of interior Mexican cooking. Ordered: Mole Enchiladas with Chicken - This $14 plate includes two "enchiladas" corn tortillas with shredded chicken filling covered with mole sauce and sesame seeds. The kitchen rolled chicken into two corn tortillas, put them on the plate. and added the sauce. The single offered side dish, refried beans, were not fresh and tasted like canned. Mole sauce is a complex concoction with an immense flavor profile. What I received was another cheap facsimile. I felt like I was being robbed. Fail. Camarones Margarita - For $22 the kitchen/waitress returned the wrong dish but we accepted due to the long wait. Received the Camrones Diablo. I *hate* when a restaurant send shrimp in a sauce with TAILS! It forces you do remove them thereby making a mess with your fingers and handling the pieces. If that wasn't bad enough, the shrimp were badly overcooked. Rubbery and tough. There is no reason for me to visit Curra's Grill again. Manuel's is much better for the price and quality. read more

I like this place a good amount - especially after trying their delightful tres leches cake. Granted I'm not a Mexican food snob and little idea if the food here is "authentic" or not. I like their beef tips and their banana wrapped pork. The margarita is alright and service was pretty quick. Salsa has a good kick to it. I used to be a regular at this location they had great customer service and great food unfortunately this weekend I went to the location and the bartender was very rude the food was not good the rice was crunchy on the inside and the refried beans were watery I really hope that it gets better because it wasn't worth it for the price I paid I'm not sure if I will be back hopefully your experience will be different from mine read more

Can't believe I've never gone here before but we were close by and looking for a patio. I ordered an avocado margarita, it was so good! We didn't have any appetizers. I had fish tacos on corn tortillas with rice and black beans. Everything was delicious. I've never felt the need to comment on beans before but the black beans were actually very flavorful. While I'm sad to report that the avocado margarita isn't available for delivery, the Tacos Vegetarianos Plate is still quite a delight to enjoy while remaining painfully sober. You get sliced avocados, nopalitos, mushrooms, and veggie chorizo on two large tortillas (flour, corn, or red corn), plus a side of your choice (rice or beans to keep it plant-based) and a cute little fresh salad of shredded lettuce and diced tomatoes. Simple but well seasoned, it's healthy, hearty but not too heavy, and just the right amount of comfort food. No modifications or removals needed to make it 100% vegan either, which is always a plus. I'll have to go back in person to get the full experience. Given the quality of the takeout alone, I have no doubt it would be 10 stars! read more

Went to Curras Oltorf and were treated poorly. We are two women, sitting across from each other, who have been married for 22 years. My wife was misgendered in a weird way. This place is the best! Interior Tex mex -relleno stuffed with beef potatoes raisins and walnuts, sweet and savory perfection.
