I just can't say enough good things about the guys (and girls) over at Curtis Hi-Tech. They were recommended to me by a car-dude friend when I was new in town and thought I was going to have to have my transmission rebuilt. They're super-friendly, fast, inexpensive, and above all they are honest. What could have been a $2500 ordeal turned out to be a $25 vacuum line rupture that they repaired in about 20 minutes, and sent me on my merry way. I haven't gone to anyone else since. I never have trouble getting an appointment, and I'm never waiting for long. I'm a somewhat paranoid car-owner, and they've checked out a few "problems" that turned out to be nothing, and didn't charge me. For a trip check, it was $15. They don't try to sell you anything you don't need, or scare you into upgrades like they do at Firestone or chain places. The work they do is always very solid. They're good people with a good business. I moved home across the country recently after living in Asheville for 3 years, and I realized I'm sad to leave because I won't be able to give them my money anymore. I brought my 2008 Infiniti G37S in for a water pump replacement and paid $1,700. After waiting weeks, I finally picked it up only to notice a loud rattling noise coming from the engine bay that was not there before. Shortly after, the car went into limp mode and threw codes P0524 (low engine oil pressure) and P0011 (camshaft timing over-advanced). These were new issues that started after the repair. I brought the car back, and instead of addressing the problems, I was quoted another $1,600 for an AC compressor replacement--which does not explain the engine codes or limp mode. When I told them I just wanted to pick up my car, I was then told I owed an additional $170 in labor fees that were never discussed or approved. After leaving the shop, my car began smoking from the engine bay. So to recap: I paid $1,700 and left with multiple new problems, was asked to pay more for unrelated repairs, and then was charged fees I never authorized. This has been one of the worst experiences I've had with a repair shop. I would strongly recommend taking your vehicle elsewhere read more

THEY CHARGE A 3.5% CREDIT CARD FEE AND WON'T TELL YOU THAT UP FRONT - THEY RELY ON YOU "READING IT ON A POSTED SIGN." I just happened to see it on my bill, something I never paid much attention to before b/c I just trusted them. That is not the way to do business, in my opinion. Will not be going back because of that. Why not just tell every customer up front? Probably because no one would use them for a 3.5% CC fee, that is ridiculous. !!DO NOT BRING YOUR VEHICLE HERE!! Terrible Experience with Curtis High Tech/ Curtis Tire! Brought my van in to have them check out my suspension and alignment. They said my vehicle was unsafe and charged more than $1100 to replace bushings and power steering hose.. I picked up my car they said It was safe... and it was in worse condition than before pulling so hard to one side I almost hit the curb going home. I took it back, they rotated my tires and when I drove it home it was missing the lug nut cover. After driving it a couple times across town, the smoke returned and now it shakes when braking. When I went back, they inspected it, told me "well its an older car..." They gave me a new estimate for an additional $2300!! DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY WITH THIS BUSINESS! read more

I had the worst experience here that I've ever had with any mechanic. These people are sloppy, unprofessional, barely know what they're doing, and straight-up lied about how much they would charge. First, I had an appointment for 1pm, which I had made a few days in advance. I showed up right before 1:00, but they didn't even look at my car until over an hour later. Then they said I needed a new fuel pump, and that they would charge $85/hour for labor. The job was complete in under 2 hours, and they charged me $250 just for labor on that job (plus the prior diagnostic, plus parts, fees/taxes, etc.). When I disputed this charge and insisted that they promised to charge $85/hr, they repeatedly said, "If we actually charged what we said then we wouldn't make any money. So we need to charge a little more." and they wouldn't let me leave without paying their upcharges. When I finally got back into and started my allegedly fixed car, the engine made a strange and annoying noise that I'd never heard before. I went back to tell them about it. The mechanic didn't believe me until he heard it for himself. It turns out they had forgotten to seal something properly, so I waited standing in the cold while they fixed their mistake. My car is fixed now, but I would never go here again, nor would I recommend it to anyone ever. Update: Since they replaced my fuel pump, my fuel gauge no longer works. Unfortunately I do not live in Asheville so I can't go back and get them to fix it. read more

I have 30 years experience rebuilding Lycoming and Continental reciprocating aircraft engines. I told the lady I rent from not to take her Scion to this Curtis place in Oteen before I checked it out, but she went ahead and took it anyway. Big mistake. All she needed done was a small oil leak fixed, but they made a hole in an engine casting big enough for a cat to crawl through. Then they had the nerve to tell her they did not recommend that she drive the car because it had a crack in the timing cover: When the Scion was cranked it pumped at least 2 quarts of oil on the ground in less than 1 minute. I know just about exactly what happened because I have worked on the Scion, doing an oil change and rehanging a baffle on the exhaust system. *I'm also familiar with Hyundai of Asheville using oversized tools to over-torque the oil filler cap AND the oil filter cover on this Scion.* Now these dishonest "high-tech" people, who are incompetent and will not own up to the damage they did, demand $1400 to fix what they broke. She works. They have her Scion. So she cannot work because she uses her car in her work. I saw the unfortunate results of what they did. I know. I wouldn't even award them one star. read more

I found it hard to accept it as a coincidence, so I wanted to ask the man who checked it out some questions. Never seen an owner of a business with such a foul disposition. I was there several times and he's always on edge. He's very abrasive when you ask him questions and not accommodating at all when there's a problem with the work that he has done. I don't see the same group of mechanics there everytime that i had to go back to followup on the same problem. He's got to be difficult to work for considering how unfriendly and rude he is toward customers. People shouldn't have to pay top prices for work and put up with an attitude from the owner. read more

The third time they actually refused to work on my car and let it sit there for nine days as punishment because I had worked on it myself. One of the mechanics actually admitted this to me. I took my fathers 2019 Dodge minivan in for a simple check of transmission fluid. The technician/mechanic broke the stick off inside the transmission. The office manager said they would have to "drop the transmission pan" to get it out and it would cost upwards of $200. My dad is a 79 year old disabled Veteran. The place is a disgrace! read more

Horrible mechanic shop!!! Took my daughter's car in as it needed a radiator. They forgot to hook the fans back up! They also prepped me to need to spend more money in their shop stating head gaskets might leak. Nope- they just didn't burp it long enough after they replaced everything, causing it to lose fluid. The owner NEVER called me back to apologize, or offer partial payment back for their really stupid mistake. Had to spend more $$$$ to fix their poor service!!!!! read more

I would give them 0 stars if I could. My husband took his car there for a tire rotation and they broke his lug stud on his tire and told him it was going to $290 to fix it. For something THEY broke. They never once apologized for the inconvenience or for their error. They sat there with stone cold faces just saying $290 because it's intensive labor to fix. They also told him his car was safe to drive off the lot so he drove it home. We get home, start making a few calls and find out his car was indeed NOT safe to drive home and that their estimate for fixing it was outrageous. Needless to say we took the car to a different location and had it fixed for only $79. BIG DIFFERENCE. We will never be taking our cars back here again. read more

I dropped my car off (with every alert light glowing on the dashboard) and picked it up after work. i had previously left a five star review about curtis hi tech, after leaving my car with them the first time for squeaky brakes upon reverse (see images) and I brought it in/picked up same day. i was told it was fixed, billed $251.32. I walked down and it was tested 1X. it was obvious there was still grinding etc, and i had to drive another day with my children not safe in the car, until i could bring it in AGAIN, and be billed an additional $302.36 to get the issues corrected. I paid the large fee, got my car and then about two months later took the car to a Firestone to get my tires changed and given a complimentary car check, and informed me my brake pads were grinding incorrectly due to the fact that my rotors hadn't been addressed, the manager of the firestone expressed his sympathy considering what i'd already paid and offered a discount if i go get them resurfaced with them if curti hi-tech would not correct the issue. i called CHT, they seemed to be apologetic, and offered to fix the problem for again, another fee, in addition of having told me that my brake pads had been recalled, yet no one had the courtesy to call and inform me while i drove around my two young children. I was told the price would be $134 over the phone for fixing the rotor issues and replacing the recalled brakes, and i was told we could 'work something out' until payday or i get my taxes back (payday would have been the end of the week, and i'm a single mom with no child support). instead, they never offered to work anything out with me, and simply changed the brakes, holding off on the rest of the work, until i came up with the remaining $134 of what is now a total of $687.68 and four trips to fix my brakes. i said fine, to get this over with, and i brought it in today. i asked them to look at the A/C while they were at it and to please do the inspection for registration. i got a call on my work phone (nice that they use my work line at the VA and i'm extremely busy during a literal global pandemic while I tell an immunodeficient veteran that needs how to avoid a virus lethal to him on hold, because that line is reserved for emergencies with my children, but they insist on calling my private line I had made the mistake of giving despite me providing my cell this morning and email with specific instructions) that it was going to be $477 to fix a HOSE for the AC, finally, hopefully make the brakes safe for my family, and do my registration. this fee included a $65 diagnostic test that i was not made aware of neither when I made the appointment nor the morning I gave the keys this morning, and when i asked for a breakdown of the $477 bill seven minutes later, when two colleagues told me I needed to and I could get some time outside the hospital panic, I was told the rotors were going to be twenty dollars higher than previously discussed, and I told them I would gladly pay the aforementioned registration fee as well as the $134 (a price I had discussed with Courtney on at least two occasions, which I have proof of, as I use a recording app), and I terminated any further work on the vehicle as I perceived the practices to be so unscrupulous they can't even keep their numbers straight. I thought about having my male colleague that drove me over to come into to help me negotiate, but I assumed they might be reasonable. After all, it's 2020 right? A woman should be able to negotiate her way around a mechanic shop without a man.. but instead they decided to tack on an additional "20% restocking fee". I was told as a professional woman for being upset without raising my voice and cursing (I have a reputation for being monotone actually), that I was a "crazy lady" and charged $757.70 and four visits worth of my important time to fix my brakes and registration. Just don't go there. Also, told me today they wouldn't accept my check, when I protested was told they don't accept checks above $200. they had before for $304. DONT NOT BRING!! your vehicle to them.. i had read all the reviews before bringing my 91 jeep yj to have front seals and barring changed was told 2 day 3 if had to rebuild axel.. well 2 week later they still have not even touched my jeep, drove by and jeep was not on lot.. went in and was told it was sent to another mechanic no one had even informed me thats was happening!!! during the whole 2 weeks no contact from them to say what was going on! only contact was myself calling them!! was quoted 2 different price one guy $700 and then by co owner $400???? and then was told could pick up this friday it would all be done! well spoke with kitty today and was told we will not be able to finish, and blamed all of it on other mechanic... im also co owner in a electic company was very hopefull to find a mechanic that could service our company vehicles..... not going to happen!! My Opinion not qualified to do an oil change!!!!" My experience with Curtis Hi Tech Auto Service was terrible. They charged me $50 for a diagnosis on the check engine light, the estimate for repair (basically for turn-up and replacing belts) they gave me was more expensive than others. I did not let them repair my car, but I did pay for $50 reluctantly, because I felt it was my mistake not knowing or asking first whether there would be a charge for a diagnosis. I left with a feeling of being ripped-off. In order to have my car fixed, I went to the repair shop that I usually went to, Mike's Auto in North Asheville, I got my car fixed promptly as promised and the cost was much reasonable. I should have gone to Mike's Auto in the first place, but I thought Curtis Hi Tech was close to my residence in East Asheville, and I would like to give it a try. It turned out I was wrong. One more note, Curtis Hi Tech Auto also quoted me for replacing the timing belt at $500, and Mike's Auto said it would be $300. What a big difference! My recommendations are (1) always asking for any possible charges before a diagnosis (Advantage Auto can decode the check engine light code for free); and (2) seeking for second opinion from other auto repair shops (definitely if you are thinking to deal with Curtis Hi Tech Auto.) read more

Not natives of Asheville, we didn't know where to go when one of my dashboard lights came on while we were traveling through the city on I-26 one weekend recently. We called a local AutoZone who told us to swing by there to diagnose the problem. Turns out it was the alternator. But AutoZone recommended Hi Tech, which was about 50 yards down the road. Hi Tech had just closed for the day, but they took us anyway. AutoZone delivered the part immediately, and the whole operation took just 20 minutes. And the bill was just over $300. I am used to paying a lot more for alternators for the cars of my past. Hi Tech is a family operation, and everyone there was mild mannered, friendly, and more than happy to help out a couple of panicked travelers. We are in their debt! read more

I would not recommend going here, they told me it would be 50 for a diagnostics test, I ended up paying 123. They told me that they HAD to put in a vacuum hose because they couldn't run the diagnostic test without it, but they did not call me and ask me if they could do that so I ended up paying twice as much than I was told originally, then I get in my car and my check engine light is still on, and my car is shutting off even more than it was before. So when I called I got a little heated on the phone and they hung up on me, then I called back and they told me there was nothing else they can do for me. Terrible terrible service at first I thought they were nice but that is direspectful to be hung up on like that by the MANAGER. I'm an out of towner visiting Asheville for a brief stretch of time and needed to find a place just for a routine oil change. It was great that Curtis HI-Tech has some open hours on Saturday mornings so I didn't have to worry about my own work hours and getting an oil change done. They had my oil change done promptly for a very fair price for semi-synthetic oil, and everything worked smoothly. Other customers who were there are the time seemed familiar with the employees and it had the feel of a family business rather than a big corporate operation. read more

Brought my 12 yr old car in and asked to fix the air conditioner or the drivers side window. Got a price for the ac, that was less expensive than doing both. They stated it was a harmonic balancer problem... ok, they fixed it, then drove off the lot, AC still blew hot after 5 min and car idled super rough. Tried to fix the idle prob, couldn't, didn't. Told me AC was fixed, still wasn't. had to take to Subaru dealer to fix timing problem. Subaru told me AC problem was the COMPRESSOR, not once did curtis "hi tech" tell me it was the COMPRESSOR for the AC. Job would be close to 900$ for that to be fixed. I would've fixed the window instead! Asked for full or even partial refund, told me he'd give me $120 off AC compressor job or put my old harmonic balancer back on. What a joke. I'm sure the balancer was bad, and they did a good job of fixing that, but the AC still doesn't work and there was NO disclosure about that, thats what I'm pissed about. Should've told me it was the COMPRESSOR. Gotta eat the 240 and a AC still blowing hot air. Never again. Not even for my free oil change. read more

I have used Curtis High Tech 4 times now, and each time they gave superior service at very reasonable prices. They are conveniently located across the street from my employer, so dropping off the car is quite handy. The last time I used them was when I was about a mile from work and noticed smoke coming from under my hood. I checked my temperature gauge and it was as high as it could possibly go! The temperature was below freezing. Rather than pull over and wait several hours for AAA, I decided to just go for it and try to make it to Curtis. By the time I got there smoke was billowing out of the car and I prayed it wouldn't catch fire. I have to be at work a half hour before Curtis opens so I left the car there with the key and called them when they opened . They had my car fixed by the time I got off work and I was pleasantly surprised at how reasonable the charge was. I needed a new thermostat, radiator, and 2 hoses. I was afraid I was going to have to buy a new car. Staff was pleasant , friendly, and helpful. I was impressed that they were able to do the repair the day as I did not have an appointment. Several of my coworkers have been using Curtis High Tech for years and have highly recommended them. Add me to the list. They are great! read more

The worst ever! Went because my check engine light came on...after I got some tires put on, by them. Went and they said it was two causes. I said ok let's fix it. On Friday they say they can fix one of the parts, but I'd have to come back much later in the day. So I instead scheduled for both jobs to be completed on Monday. I go there Monday they have one part. And ordered the wrong part for the second job. I was told come back Tuesday afternoon. OKAY, fine! I go back Tuesday and they FORGOT to order my part. So I end up spending ANOTHER two hours there for a half an hour job. They finally replace the parts. For two days my check engine light is off. On Friday I go back to them. They tell me the code. I look it up and it's pretty straightforward, a valve needs to be replaced. BUT, they wanted to charge me for a type of diagnostic not relating to the valve... Long story short, DON'T go to them! read more

I have finally resolved a three-month ordeal with Curtis Hi Tech. I honestly don't know why it has such high reviews since I had such trouble with them. I initially had my car towed there because it wouldn't start. They replaced the fuel pump for $300 and I went on my way. Later the same evening, it died at the bottom of my driveway, but started right back up. This problem continued for a few days and got worse as there was less gas in the car, so I took it back to Curtis Hi Tech and explained the issue. They diagnosed it as a bad sending unit, saying that I thought I had gas in the car when I really didn't, so I was repeatedly running out of gas. I knew this wasn't the problem, since I've had the car for five years and know how it runs, so I took it somewhere else. The second mechanic said 1) it needed a new main relay and may have never needed the fuel pump and 2) there was probably a problem in the tank that was causing the stalling, from the installation of the pump, and I should give Curtis Hi Tech a chance to fix it. So I returned to Curtis Hi Tech a third time. The owner assured me that it did need the fuel pump, but they would take a look at the new problem. Again, Curtis Hi Tech diagnosed the issue as a bad sending unit, and I was repeatedly running out of gas. I was literally stalling out at every stop sign and stop light - I knew this wasn't just running out of gas! But they replaced the sending unit, saying it should fix the problem. It didn't, and I told them I would return to test drive it with a mechanic and demonstrate the problem. So I returned a fourth time, and test drove with a mechanic. He told me, again, that I was running out of gas. Seriously? He also suggested that it might be the EGR valve. But either way, it seemed, it wasn't their responsibility, despite the fact that the problem started the same day they put in the fuel pump. I decided to go back (again) and test drive with the owner. On my fifth visit, the owner suggested that it was a problem with a sensor, or possibly something else, but assured me (again) that it wasn't related to the fuel pump. He was confident in saying that if I brought a receipt from another mechanic showing proof that it was related to the fuel pump or tank, he would refund my money. He said "I have no problem with that, I know it's not related" and sent me on my way. So I took the car to another mechanic, who found that the fuel pump and screen weren't hitting the bottom of the tank. So the fuel pump wasn't picking up the gas consistently when it was below a quarter of a tank. Seems simple enough to me! I returned to Curtis Hi Tech with my receipt to ask for my refund. The owner looked at my receipt, grudgingly gave me my refund, and offered the parting shot that "You'll see though, it did need the fuel pump to begin with. It was a bad fuel pump." I would have appreciated an apology for the three months I spent taking my car to various shops to fix their mistake, and for them repeatedly denying responsibility only to be proved wrong. At least I got my money back. I'll never again take my car to Curtis Hi Tech. read more
