I purchased an off-the-rack evening gown which was about 2 inches too long. I was only in LA for the weekend and the party I needed the dress for was only 7 days away. I figured I'd call a local tailor to see if they did same day alterations to save me time of trying to find one back in the SF Area. I called a couple tailors late on a Saturday of Memorial Day weekend and most shops were already closed. Luckily for me, Tailoring by Fernando was still open, and in the area I was staying. I gave them a call an a woman answered, she sounded extremely busy but she said if I could get there before 6 pm (it was already 5:15 pm), then she would take a look at the dress and see if she could get it done the same day. We arrived to the shop around 5:50 pm, she looked at the garment and said she could have it hemmed by 7. I put the dress on and she marked it up, I pre-paid the cost via Venmo (cash only place), and I was on my way. She noted she'd text/call me when it was ready. I got a little nervous when I didn't hear from her around 6:50 PM but just around 7:00 she sent me a message that the dress would be ready by 8:00 PM. The work was great and she also steamed the dress for me. I felt the price ($65) was reasonable for the alterations to this evening gown, which was a rush request. I had my dress altered and steamed within a couple of hours! This definitely saved me time, money, and stress! read more

Alterations costs have skyrocketed over the years, with the quality actually going down. Not by Fernando! As a petite girl I always need alterations on newly purchased clothing. Fernando always gets the job done right with my dresses and jeans. Other alterations in the area typically cost $10-25 more. I highly recommend Fernando. read more

Can't say enough about this fine establishment!! After getting a huge NO from the grumpy Russian tailor lady in lincoln blvd I wandered into here. I had a usual request some tailoring on a cover for an instrument case. She made the measurements immediately and did and amazing job in just a few days for a great price. I cannot express how much I love coming here!! I've been coming here for the last two years and everyone here is always so friendly and accommodating. They try their best to tailor your items in the time you need and they always do such an outstanding job. I've brought items such as skirts, pants, dresses, and even shoes here to get fixed. They are also well versed in adjusting more complex things like changing sleeve lengths, adjusting torso lengths and adjusting all aspects of a dress. The cost is reasonable and will depend on how complicated the job is. For something like adjustments on pant length, it's $20 unless there is a special request. They take cash or Zelle and they're street parking in the area. I highly recommend this shop if you are looking to adjust anything! read more

Sadly today was my last time patronizing Isabel and Fernando's business. I've been going to them for years because they did great work and I liked them. It's not at all convenient for me geographically but quality work and people took precedence over convenience. In late December/early January I had a very expensive suit altered. I tried it on and thought it was okay. Then I left and after wearing it the first time, I decided the waist of the pants was a little tight. I brought it back and to her credit, Isabel said no problem and offered to tweak them for no additional cost. When I picked them up, I was in a rush and did not try them on because it was only a small fix and they otherwise perfect previously. I ended up not wearing the suit for about six weeks. This week I put it on and was shocked to find that they had altered the pants length absurdly. They weren't even supposed to change the length, only waist. They were capri pants. They stopped at mid calf. They were ruined because there was not enough fabric to fix. I went to the store today and Isabel told me if I could get the same pants she would Zelle me for them. I then drove all the way to the Century City mall and spent 50 minutes tracking them down. Bought them and drove all the way back to Isabel's. First, when I walked in she told me she checked the camera and I had tried the pants on when I picked them up and didn't say anything. This makes no sense as 1) the pants were visually and obviously cartoonishly too short. There is no conceivable explanation. 2) I didn't try them on so there is no way she checked any video of me doing that. Then she tells me she can get the same pants for half off (I don't actually believe that) so she only wants to send me 1/2 the cost of the pants. I said no. She ruined the pants and told me she would pay for them and I just spent 2 hours going back and forth to get them. And if she could get the same pants herself why didn't she tell me that before when I told her I was leaving to go buy the pants (she had no answer to that). Then Fernando came out and suggested I had waited too long to come back. At this point I got offended and gave up and told them to give me the pants and keep their money. I don't need their money. I've been a long time customer with no problems ever. I have no idea what happened but they ruined them and by default the suit. Either they want to take ownership for their mistake or they don't. But I'm not accepting any amount of money from them if they don't believe me. That's it. Everything is fine until it isn't. It's a shitty way to do business and I will not be returning. read more

I went in to have a Bridesmaid's Dress hemmed up. The dress was dragging on the ground by a good 12 inches. I popped in right before they closed a couple weeks ago, chatted with the woman working. We had a good banter, I asked for a certain length taken off, she tried to get me to go shorter. The dress was ready for pickup on the requested date, and for the hemming, it was $50. I wasn't previously informed that they were cash or digital payment (Venmo/Zelle) only, but luckily I was able to send payment digitally. They even saved the excess fabric in case I wanted a basic shawl. I don't need clothes tailored too often, but I would go back. read more

First time I came, I brought my dress, pants, and purse for them to tailor and fix. Total was about $60, not bad!! They did such an amazing job!! I thought my purse was never going to be repaired but it is still in good condition. Liked them so much that I brought another dress. Before I even said anything about what I wanted fixed in this second dress, the nice lady pointed out exactly what I wanted. WOW! Best tailor in LA! Can't say enough great things about Fernando. Fernando understands body shapes, fabrics, care, etc. in an incredible way. He's been a tailor for decades and his vast experience shows in his care and understanding of garments. I took a womens blazer to him and he tailored it perfectly incredibly quickly (within a week or two). I asked for adjustments after and he made those for free. I've now taken shorts, dresses, jackets, etc. and they've all been perfect. He runs this himself - tailors the clothes and runs the business all by himself. He's trying to hire additional tailors but is very picky and discerning to keep the quality high and has yet to find someone that meets his standards. I went into Men's Wearhouse a week before a wedding, and they were unable to tailor my crispy white shirt and suit in time, but they gave me Fernando's number and I went in the very next day on a Saturday. Fernando fitted me right away and took my measurements. I mentioned I needed it the following Satuday, and he looked at me with wide eyes, for I knew this a was a hardy request. I wanted to really like Fernando and his work. However, they were late one week for alterations. I gave them a pass because I planned to allow extra time. I was charged full price despite being one week late. Then they were late again...by 4 days for my wedding dress. I had to keep changing my plans to give them time. This worried me because I knew there was a risk of poor quality work because they were rushing. On Friday, they were still not done and I told them I would give them until Tuesday morning. Tuesday morning the dress wasn't done and shoved in a bag. They asked me to return at 6pm. I did and they were not done. I had to wait there until 6:30. When I saw the dress....it was a disaster!!! Messy work. Stitching inside looked like an amateur completed it (I sew a bit). They didn't even do the work I requested which was the reason I went there in the first place. Then they gaslighted me and making me feel I didn't need any of the work I requested on the fitting day. This really pissed me off. They charged me a lot. While I waited two people walked in and advised him his phone wasn't working. It wasn't...I tried calling before 6pm too. He told his employee in Spanish "it's better that it is not on so people don't call me." I bit my tongue because I already knew I would not do business with him again. On top of it all, he is a creeper! I believe the reviews about his inappropriateness. Told me my bottom looked like JLO's. He is touchy feely. Does not hesitate to touch you. Best price in the area! Great customer service, local. My mom had altered a dress for my cousins wedding and liked his work so we went to get my wedding dress sleeves taken in. It was on time but what we saved in price was lost on us when there were two pink stains! One on the breast and one on the back of the shoulder. None of the cleaners in the area could spot treat the dress in the time we needed it so my mom ended up appliqué-ing lace flowers to cover the spots! They could be a little more organized and careful! But other than that... we had been a repeat customer previously. read more

They were supposed to tailor some Carhartt work pants for me. Told them to take their time and had me wait a week. I arrive at the agreed pickup time in the afternoon (2pm) to be exact and it wasn't done. They were trying to get it done at the last minute. Really don't appreciate that and just be mindful about coming here. Not worth it as theirs better tailors within the same price range. read more

They've altered dresses, pants, and shirts to fit my petite stature, including more complex alterations such as removing/altering collars, taking in busts/waists in dresses, and taking in waists in pants. The first few times I went there he was flirting saying he wanted to be my boyfriend, take me out to fancy restaurants and that he told his mother about me. I was disgusted and told him that I was not interested and to please keep it professional. Then the last time I went there the inappropriate touches and caresses happened and when I said STOP and called him out on it...he literally walked away and instructed the tailor employee from the back to "deal" with me. I don't work there I'm not related to anyone there I just know truly excellent personal service when I see it. I've been going to Fernando for the odd suit repair and what have you and he ALWAYS goes above and beyond. He only takes cash and I constantly forget that and he actually says "Pay me what you have and pay me the rest next time !" ....I'm old so I remember some time ago a couple local businesses would do this but I haven't seen it in a VERY long time . On this order today I have 40 shirts that need to have patches on the front and back for a fundraiser for an animated pilot my daughter night wrote...I told him what it was for and showed him some of the art and explained that the patches were late arriving and we had already pre sold 20 shirts so we were late . The guy lowered the price on each shirt by $3 and said he would come in Sunday to do all 40 shirts himself!! What? Lol Who does that?? Fernando is the best! He had altered several dresses and clothing items for me in the past. I most recently took my wedding dress to him to get it altered. He added a 3-part bustle, swapped out some of the ribbon on the dress, shortened the tulle skirt, shortened the straps, and took the waist in. In a bind needing tux alternations, I thought I'd have to get a whole new one. they were able to help immensely, can't recommend enough!

I'm a petite adult woman and for all of my adult working life, I have been to many tailors of differing skill and cost. All this time, I've been searching for a "go-to" tailor and I thought Fernando's was going to be the one. After searching online, I was excited to find a tailor in my neighborhood with reviews that said prices were reasonable. I went there in the morning, the website said it opened at 8am. At 9am they were not open and it looked like they wouldn't be. So I came back in the afternoon at 3pm. I asked about their hours, the woman who worked there said their hours are not as posted and that they open at noon. (!?) She took my two jackets that needed the sleeves shortened. She measured my sleeves and gave me a slip. In the total line for the order slip she wrote $70. There was no price menu of alterations, but only a sign with big red capital letters that said "CASH ONLY." So I made a mental note to bring $70 cash because like most people, I don't usually carry cash. I went to pick them up and I guess I was greeted by Fernando - he got the order and told me it was $140. I only had the $70 I thought my bill was. I showed him my slip and compared it to his slip that also said $70 in the total line. I told him it was my first time there and I was going by what was written in my order slip. He fought me on the total and called his employee which was his wife. I told him I didn't care to argue because this is what she wrote. It's in her writing, $70. Again he argued more and told me to talk to his wife and I said sir, it's in writing? Then I showed him Alandale's website - a custom men's suit shop in Downtown Culver City, which listed shortening coat sleeves at $45, so it should be market rate. I told him it was my first time at his shop. He told me I should have used them, this is his business and he charges what he charges. I explained their tailor was in Morrocco. He took my $70 cash and told me to never come back. He blew it. I'm a small woman with nice clothes who's been looking for a neighborhood tailor for years. I told two friends that I may have found a great tailor. They asked me to tell them how it went because they too, were looking for a good tailor. Now I have a bad experience to report back. He could have said, "Oh, it does say that. My wife made a mistake. Next time, it's $70 per shortening sleeves on a jacket," and hoped for a long customer relationship. For me to settle on him, go there (twice because they weren't open when they said they were), come back with his exact payment because he is cash only, and have him argue with me over his wife's mistake, was just a terrible experience. What an emotional egotistical man. He should update his website hours and have an alteration price menu posted clearly on the wall for all to see, but the only sign was the one in big red capital letters yelling at me that his business was "CASH ONLY." Maybe they don't honor what is written so they don't post prices? If you go there, hang on to your order ticket and be sure to ask for the prices and total. read more

Fernando is a genius! A friend of mine who doesn't sew took her favorite dress to him along with five yards of a beautiful floral cotton sateen from my stash of fabrics. He duplicated her dress exactly, and the finishing details were exquisite. Finished seams, a perfect collar band, absolutely perfect topstitching all around. The best was how he placed the bird and floral elements, with thoughtful precision. I had a leather jacket handed down to me by grandfather. It was too large for me and cut for a man. I was very nervous about having the alterations done, but I wanted to be able to wear it, rather than just keep it in the closet. Fernando altered the jacket to fit me perfectly. BRIDESMAID DRESS ALTERATION REVIEW: Ladies, you've all been there -- trying on that bridesmaid dress that you were forced to order online for the first time and seeing it be unflattering in all the wrong places. I blame you, Pinterest! If you're like me - you haven't had anything altered outside of Fashion District in DTLA, and are weary of "westside traps" charging much more than you are used to because of the location. Thank the alteration gods for Fernando and his business. He knows what he's doing, charges reasonably, and has a quick turn around time without compromising quality. I tried on the dress on site for an evaluation and quotation - and he pinned where adjustments were to be made and I was out of there in about half an hour. Picked it up a few days later and the length was perfect and the fit actually ended up being flattering (almost miracle-esque after the first fitting!). Parking is mainly street parking (unless someone knows something I don't!), and can be a pain depending on the time of day - but I haven't had an issue snatching a spot yet. read more

Before you read, I'm giving a 2-star rating based on my own experience- I just had a pair of pleated pants tailored and hemmed here. To my disappointment, they altered and stitched it right down the front and center of the pants- very unprofessional. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I believe a pair of pleated pants should have been altered evenly on both the inside and outside seams of the pants to keep the pleats centered and NOT down the front where it is very noticeable where the alteration occured. The only thing they offered to do was to press the pants to "re-do" the pleats to make it look acceptable. I'm sure they've done a good job on other people's clothing, but my result from them is very disappointing. read more
