I have a Ouidad stylist in Scottsdale who I see every year or so, and I had been going to Ambushed for the last several years with mediocre results (it was also extremely costly and the owner has no consideration for your time and doesn't own up to her mistakes - do not go there). As I was sitting in Hannah's chair, I could see the transformation of my 4 1/2 month growth with every snip. She blended the shelf that I had been complaining about to the owner of Ambushed and my hair now actually looks like it's a seamless style. I am in love with Hannah and would have hugged her on my way out, but social distancing would not allow. I have already scheduled by next appointment for September. I was excited to find another place that offers curly cuts/Deva cuts and thought this could be a great alternative when in need. They got me in within a week for a curly cut with a woman who I'll refer to as "J". J had good reviews on yelp so I gladly accepted the appt. Upon arriving, I told her that I only wanted a dusting and she even agreed that my hair was very healthy and barely needed trimmed. I explained that I'll be getting highlights in the next few months and that i don't want to cut too much right now because I'd plan on cutting after the highlight appt (due to the damage processing can do to our curls). She acted like she understood (or At least i took it that way) and she spent about 10-15 mins cutting my hair. I felt like she was cutting a lot but couldn't see from the chair to the mirror (plus the lighting was very dim) so i didn't know for sure. I opted for no wash/style after the cut because i was just kind of bothered by the whole thing. I got up to look at my cut and saw way more hair than I'd expected on the floor. I said "wow, you cut a lot of hair off" and she replied with saying "you have a lot of hair". I didn't think that much more of it at the time until I got home and saw how much shorter my hair really was. While I don't think the actual cut itself looks terrible, I'm very upset by how J completely disregarded my wishes and cut a good 3"+ off my hair. Other curly girls will especially understand why it's so upsetting to have a stylist unexpectedly cut off so much hair. Growing curly hair is a lot of work and i think a lot of us struggle to get to a length we're comfortable with. Thankfully, I was able to get in with my usual salon to fix and re-shape my hair this week. J seemed like a nice person but obviously not a good listener. Plus, to completely disregard a clients wishes is unprofessional in my opinion. I'll include some before and after shots. ** Update: While having this hair "trim" fixed by my usual salon, they noticed that J ruined all the layers that had been in my hair. Where there should be long layers, there were some of the shortest. It was all backwards. So now I'm questioning if J truly knows how to cut hair? Or was she just incredibly careless with me? We had to do damage control and cut more just to even out the damage she did to my shape. I wish I would've known that a simple trim would turn into a huge haircut. I would've better mentally prepared myself.

On my last visit, however, I had shown my stylist a previous picture of myself, hoping to get the same hair style again. What I got was absolutely nothing like what I showed. When I mentioned that it wasn't anything like I requested and that I didn't like it I was told that "well it all comes down to how you choose to style it!" And like, girly that's your part of the job. Rating two stars instead of just one because the previous haircuts weren't as disappointing.

I will say, I'm someone who doesn't plan ahead well,…read moreso when I schedule a haircut/color, it's usually last minute so I schedule with whoever has an opening. As a result, I've had appointments with many of the women here and they all have done a fantastic job. The usual visit goes: I do a terrible job explaining what I want exactly (usually accompanied by a picture or two), they somehow decipher it and make their own suggestions, and I walk out loving my new color (and cut but I usually just trim a couple inches so nothing special there). Everyone's super nice and they're good at reading whether or not I want to chat or just have an hour or two of relative silence/escape from my hectic life. They also always suggest cheaper ways of doing what I want and I'm grateful for that (and it always looks amazing). They also always take into account my infrequency of visits and suggest things that will take less upkeep which is also appreciated. Picture is just the most recent haircut and color; sorry it's just half my hair but it might give you an idea! The only problem is that parking is a nightmare in the area. There are usually some free meters in the area (try a street down from the salon, next to the UDF) but if you're getting something that might take more than two hours, those two hour meters aren't super helpful.

Stylists rent their booths. I like my stylist. That being said there is a decided right wing rant (think Rush) initiated on a regular basis by one of the employees. For me that is a huge mood kill that causes me to stretch my time between appointments. I am now at 5 months and grabbing my own scissors. Politics and religion are best left alone and should never be initiated by employees. A skillful stylist would redirect the conversation not start it. At best you offend half your clientele. At worse you drive them away with a subsequent loss to the salon and other stylists.
