One of the must-dos during Chinese New Year prep is getting a haircut! This time around I washed my hair the morning of and just got a cut at the salon. I booked an appointment for 10:30am and was assisted by Dennis. He was very helpful during the consultation after I explained what type of cut I wanted and offered helpful suggestions before starting the cut. I had expressed that I wanted to maintain the length, not too heavy curtain bangs, long layers and to keep the volume. He also taught me a simple way to style my hair with a flat iron to give it more movement and explained why he was texturizing my hair which I appreciated. He even noticed what went wrong with my previous haircut (which was a bad haircut I had been growing out). You'll be in good hands with Dennis as your stylist! This salon is far from the long lineup on Pell St. It's actually very nice inside and the girl manning the front desk spoke English as did my hair wash lady so that was helpful. They took my sweater to hang up when I went to go get my hair washed first. And they had an itemized bill at the end of my haircut which is also convenient. It's not just scrawled handwriting. It's an actual billed checklist. My hair stylists name was Dennis and he also spoke English although not as fluently so I strained to understand him several times. He cut my long hair as requested but parted my hair wrong so the hair cut came out lopsided feeling. I should have spoken up and parted my hair the way I usually do but he was like "Your hair part is here because that's how it fell when your hair is still wet" Stylistically speaking he didn't really go for the picture I brought up for inspiration and he said it wouldn't suit my face. I didn't agree with him but I didn't push it. Not sure what would have happened if I pushed back but because I just agreed with him to go with his suggestion I left feeling pretty disappointed with how my hair turned out. I went to a more experienced, specialized stylist today who told me that my last haircut (3 months ago) wasn't thinned evenly all over my head; only the ends were and the top half of my head was still very heavy. I do corroborate this work personal experience, as within a month, my hair felt back to its usual thick ways. I'm not sure if this was the case for the first haircut here (I always ask for the same thing: thinned w/ layers), which looked better to me. Additionally, the male stylist with glasses who did my hair the last time blow dried my hair in an unflattering manner. It was alright when I left the salon, but after an hour, it looked poofy and weird. Neal, as always, is amazing. Gentle, sensitive and listens to needs. He was able to keep the length of my hair but thin it out like a true magician. My one comment was when I was getting shampooed, I said to my shampoo lady that I had a sensitive scalp and I had allergies, but normal shampoo is fine. A stylist with short red hair chimed in very rudely and told me they didn't have anything for me, very loudly too. Neal came in and just instructed to shampoo gently and away from my scalp which was lovely. This stylist / colorist came back again and spoke in their language to the lady shampooing me and kept shaking her head disapprovingly right by my side! So obvious and so rude. I really wanted to like this place because my friend recommended. She has been coming to this salon for years to get her awesome funky hair colored. She recommended her hair stylist to cut my hair. This guy that cut my hair may be good at coloring, he is such a sweet guy but his skill set in hair cutting is extremely bad. I didn't noticed how bad it was until I got home, because he quickly curled my hair when he finished. (Btw, he is not good at curling hair either) when I got home I realized it was VERY choppy and I had weird layers. I went back 2 days later (because I had a wedding to go and yes I went to the wedding with my ugly hair). I called the salon and they said they will charge me extra if another stylist re cut my hair. My stylist - Jason; my miracle colorist - turned my uneven $60 (cheap salon) KPOP orangey hazel blonde - into a Cali beachy warm Balayage. Jason took care of my hair and watched the assistant carefully to ensure my hair reaches the color I wanted. 4 hours + $250 (Balayage + tips). I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Balayage! I didn't even know what Balayage was... and now I'm hearing queen B... "I woke up like this - flawless". I came with 2 friends; I think one of them originally wanted a Balayage as well but somehow miscommunicated what she wanted and ended up with highlights instead. PSA: Balayage takes over 4 hours! Bring a friend, unless you love 4hrs of me time. They are also very friendly, will provide beverages at your request and also be sure to take bio-breaks between washes! This is a high-maintenance hair treatment; requires styling and work. I'll need to wake my A$$ up extra 20mins! OMG. Overall experience - perfectly committed! I've hesitated putting out a review for this place for a very long time, simply because I don't want to give out my favorite stylish, Jason, away. I've been going to Jason to get my haircut for 3 years now and he has always been so consistent. I was miraculously sent to him on my first visit; I had about 3-4 inches cut during the first time, and I was so hesitant about having my hair (slightly) above my shoulders for the first time in almost 20 years since I've defied the boyish cuts my mom gave me as a kid. Surprisingly, it came out to complement my face shape pretty well and actually gave my hair a more voluminous look. That (and the reasonable price) was enough for me to come back again as a regular customer. I have yet to walk out disappointed in the many times that I've come back, and that is saying a lot. Jason is a master of his craft and he is very passionate about what he does. If you're looking for a stylist who understands Asian hair, I highly recommend going to Jason. I don't spend a lot of time doing my hair, and it shows a lot. I can't recall a time when Jason didn't politely offer his professional insight and advice to help me get healthier-looking and stylish hair. Not once has he tried to endorse a product from a sales point-of-view. I've taken most of his tips and tried the products that he's recommended because he knows his stuff and he truly means well for his clients. Thanks to a friend for recommending this salon, and thanks to Yelpers for pointing me to Jason as a stylist. Count me in as a new regular here. I have Chinese med/long hair and a Chinese wallet, to boot. So that means: 1. I'm deathly afraid of getting a FOB haircut with too much texturizing -- I.e., getting a mullet style that's popular in Shanghai and Taipei these days 2. I'm afraid of getting too blunt of a cut where you can see the chunky straight edge at the ends, which I fear I'll get with someone who isn't experienced or who doesn't understand stick straight Chinese hair line mine. And 3. It also means I like to spend within my budget of under $50. Here, the regular price for a haircut is $38. And the Yelp special right now offers 20% off if you go during the middle of the week when they're less busy. So, all in all this place was a gem. The lady who washed and massaged my hair gave me incredible service (I forgot to tip her at the end, and felt terrible about it once I remembered halfway home). I will make some nice layers to create some volume + the added waves (which he did!) I had a haircut with Jason today and while the cut was pretty good, there was no styling or blowout at the end of the cut. He primarily used his fingers to blow dry my hair and barely used a brush to style/straighten it. That's how I blow dry my hair at night when I wash it at home! I have wavy hair so if it's not straighten, it will be get frizzy. Maybe I should have said something but I think I was left in shock when he signaled he was done. Came here and had a haircut with Dennis. I went to him 6 years ago at the other Cutting Edge and I remembered that he cut me a nice angled bob. I tend to jump around from salon to salon, so I haven't really stayed put anywhere. However I didn't want to risk a hair disaster, so I decided to go with someone who I had pleasant memories of. It was nice experience. Let me tell you a bit about my hair status: my hair, not like most of Americans'or Asians', is very thin and subject to handful loss. So I really am carefully to be advised to do straighten or coloring. However, Cutting Edge Z is ethical. They know my hair status. They didn't recommend me to do any straighthen or coloring, because of course there is a lot chemical. Instead, they recommend Keratin treatment, which can give my hair some protein, so give my hair some volume and keep my hair straight naturally for 2-3 months. I just did it yesterday.
