I was born in NJ and raised in Cleveland, OH. Some loud mouth from NJ was seated next to me at Recovery Room. I tried to make some conversation and be nice. He had some other big bozo with him and I didn't appreciate their aura. As the kids say "they didn't pass the vibe check." Next thing you know somebody pushed the NJ guy into my stool. I am too old for that mess so I settled up my tab and left. Enter Cutty Bar which is indeed in the cut. This was such a pleasant departure from the busy barroom I left at Recovery. Had a negative experience here -bartender made a scene insisting my out of state ID was a fake, their main reasoning was that the card was bendy. I tried to calmly explain that it is out of state, that this is not the case and showed them the holographic overlay (something a fake id would not replicate) but they ignored this, insisted it was too bendy to be real. I eventually convinced them to give it back and left. I wished they understood that this is a college town and that people will have IDs from other states made of different qualities of plastic, bending it is not a reliable way to prove an ID is fake read more

Cutty's is the definition of a hole in a wall and I thoroughly enjoy it. I'm not sure where to begin but I'll start with the atmosphere. It reminds me of the college days and seeing a guy's apartment hung with random items. There's a fantasy draft on the ceiling, the Cutty's design is a pirate cat with cross bones, the bathroom walls are painted with lovely graphics, pool table, and my favorite is the suggestion box goes straight to the trash. The drinks are the most reasonable you can get in downtown Charleston. I enjoy the fact that they have a 5 buck minimum on credit cards because usually you will have to order two drinks to reach that 5 bucks. Well drinks are usually $4 and beers range from a Stella being $3.50 to local beers around $5 or $6 and then they have dollar mystery beers. They are some quality mystery beers (Busch, Milwaukee's Best and everyone's favorite PBR). I always enjoy bringing my guests in town to this bar right before or after we hit one of the rooftop, higher priced or hand crafted cocktail bars just to keep them off guard. read more

I went here with some friends, and as I write this review, I find myself nodding me head at all the other Yelp reviews because they're so true. At Cutty's you feel worlds away from the fancier, more expensive bars just a few blocks away. I drove past Cutty's a few times before I figured out where it was. It's located exactly across the street from D'Al's pizza, and there's no flashy sign. In fact, the sign outside the door had a small sign that said "Cutty's Notary", which made me wonder if someone's ever discovered Cutty's because they googled a place to get a document stamped. I'm sure it's happened. Cutty's atmosphere reminds me of my high school years- very hipster attitude with random items on the walls (including tons of South of the Border stickers and a pencil sharpener). Forget fancy archetecture or decor- go a couple blocks down the street for that. I've lived in Charleston over four years, and this is the diviest place I've visited. The happy hour specials are from 4-8, which is great for those of us who actually work and have schedules that sometimes mean we drink at 7 or 8 instead of 5 or 6. You can get a $1 mystery beer and all beers are $1 off, along with $3 house infused liquors The bartender made me a delicious mixed drink with the pineapple infused rum. The minimum tab is $5, so plan to have a few mystery beers if you come for happy hour. My friend and I had a good time. It's relaxed and not the type of place to take anyone you're trying to impress. I know this is not a place for everyone and heck, probably not a spot I should think is as great as I find it. We walked in after a fine dining experience at Trattoria Luca. Talk about night and day. Heather and I are probably not the typical guests but we sure did love our experience. The bartender was super cool and we felt at home. There was a NBA finals game on and many of the 15 or so patrons were watching it and I found myself following the game closely as well. The bartender turned the other TV(one in front of me) to the game when she noticed that I cared. My wife found on the menu the Lipstick on a Pig option and it spoke to us. Hamm's Beer with a shot of Bourbon and a shot of pickle juice for less than $5. They were happy to put the shot on ice and Heather loved the shot and I loved the Hamm's. It is one of my favorites for many reasons. The bartender asked if we wanted the pickle juice. Guess not everyone takes it but we took it and loved it. Sipped a little with both our beer and our bourbon. They serve El Jimador Tequila and she noticed that I noticed and sold me on her Margarita served with the Silver. She was right. A lovely cocktail to end our too short a visit. So, I give this place 2 thumbs up and 5 stars but I know that some would not like it near as much but they are not supposed to. Classic dive-bar decor and atmosphere. Good, friendly service. Friendly vibe among the patrons. One pool table. Good cheap drinks. Bad food (the bartender even recommends "If you want good food, go to D'Allessandro's"). D'Allesandro's is the pizza place across the street. You can bring in pizza to Cutty's or even have it delivered there. Only thing missing that would make Cutty's a perfect dive, at least on the time I visited, was a few older regulars holding forth. It was all young people. But that's OK. The young regulars seem like they'll still be at Cutty's 40 or 50 years from now. read more

It reminds me of a ground-level Upper Deck, or a less fratty A.C.'s (or, a pre-remodeled A.C.s?), or a smaller, less perpetually crowded Rec Room.
