We stopped into Salty Mike's for an alumni meet-up, and overall it was a pretty casual spot. We headed to the downstairs area, which ended up being much larger than I expected--plenty of room to spread out and chat. The only downside was the wait at the bar; I stood there for about 15 minutes before anyone came over. It was busy, but not so crowded that I would've expected such a long wait for a drink. On the plus side, it is pet-friendly, which is always a win in my book. I didn't order any food during this visit, so I can't comment on the menu, but the atmosphere itself was laid-back and easygoing. read more

It's not what it used to be!!! Yes,we have two bathrooms down stairs and a bigger bar but, what is missing for me is the old crew. A place you could go into and see all the old faces even through you didn't know them. It was a dive bar but there was something special about the place that made you feel welcome as a person and not a number. It was something like the old show "CHEERS". I would give this a 0 if I could! This was our weekly hangout for many years. But, no more! The staff has completely changed and the menu is WAY overpriced! Tonight was our first time in since the new management, and what a major disappointment! We used to love to get the 1 pound popcorn shrimp which was reasonably priced and delicious. It is no longer on the menu. So we looked online to see what they had and decided we would give it a try even though our favorite menu item was taken away. Attached you will see the menu that we saw online, but when we got there it was completely different. The Prince Edward Island Blue Mussels for $9.49 looked good to us, so we went there based on this. After we had already ordered drinks we found out that the online menu is a complete sham!! The mussels were over $20.00! When I showed the bartender the online ad, he said he was going to talk to his manager upstairs. She came down to talk to us and had a very lame explanation that didn't even make any sense. She said that this was not Salty Mike's menu.... Blah, blah blah. Really?! She went on to say "But thank you for telling me because I didn't know this was out there online. We will have to get that fixed" Bottom line, they would not honor the price and we will never go back! Oh, by the way, this happened hours ago and nothing has changed with their false advertising online. A month from now they will still be misleading people. Stay away from here, unless you want to pay high prices for subpar drinks, just to have a view of a little water. There are plenty of places in Charleston with Happy Hour drink and food prices. This is not one of them! And just as a side note, any local person that used to come here, can look at this menu and know that it is a brand new menu. None of the items on this menu were ever served by Salty Mike's in the past. So the fact that someone put these false prices online and didn't the update or change them is just ridiculous. For what it is, Salty Mike's is a good dive bar. They have plenty of canned local beer available, although it's a bit pricey considering the location. No glassware or beer on tap. Park in the paid lot with attendant. I think it's $1 per half hour. So, why the two-star review? I've been to Salty Mike's many times and have complete appreciation for the fact it's a dive bar. My issue is that none of the plastic cups are clean, and it's obvious the soda wand is not cleaned either. Want a water? It will be pink in color with sticky residue on the outside of the cup. Want ice? That will have some black chunks floating in it. You can be a dive bar, but your actual beverage should be clean. read more

Ahhh salty mikes. I loved this place back in the 90s, early 2000s, etc etc. And the one thing that always brings me back - it stays true to it roots. You will never walk in and see it frufru, must wear a jacket etc. Don't get me wrong - I'm a yelpie. I love those places too. But when I come to saltys I know I will run into someone from middle or high school. I know I will always get a cold beer, and be able to play a game of pool while watching a gorgeous sunset on the Charleston harbor. The food is great, order and it's brought down from upstairs. Today we had the hot dog Buffet and it rocked! The potty is upstairs in the restaurant, just a fyi if you read this and go there and need the info. The drinks are ice cold, there is always a special on them, they will give ya a koozie if you need one. Conversation is never lacking, just strike up a convo with anyone around. Play some pool. Stopped in after the Beer Garden at Brittlebank Park last weekend. Met a group of friends there who had already been there a while so I didn't stay too long. Service was quick and the bartender was a straight up kinda guy. I will definitely say that it's tough to beat those views at any other bar around. This place is right on the water. They have pool tables inside and plenty of tables if you don't feel like saddling up to the bar. Honestly, they should focus more of the attention on bringing people outside to the deck. It's amazing out there. Major complaint on the fact that you have to leave the bar and go upstairs in the building next door to use the bathroom. What I love is the simplicity of this bar. Charleston is full of fancy upscale bars but lacks dive bars and taverns. It's a nicer dive bar compared to others. They have a pretty typical beer and liquor selection but it gets the job done. It is a locals kinda place so maybe not for a tourist but also they aren't unfriendly. The staff there was great and they don't really put up with any tom foolery. They will kick people out if they are acting a little too crazy. So very professional staff. Bartending staff was attentive and friendly. Price was very good for Charleston. Highly recommend this place during sunset so you can't watch it while enjoying a nice cold drinks. The drinks are strong, they have a decent liquor selection, the place is a dump for the most part, but its clean and has a deck on the water!
