We were big fans of the original Big John's. We stopped in to check the new owner's (Citidel graduate) new endeavor. Everything look great, the menu is nice and the staff is very accommodating. The fake panties and bras were silly but that's okay. We wish the best to the new Big John's. And we also will always miss the original.

Everything a dive bar should be; or a tavern! Nice selection of drafts on the board when you enter. Beers were cold and served in a chilled glass. We had the blackened shrimp nachos and they were fantastic. A large mound of deliciousness! Even sharing, we couldn't finish them all. Lillian, the bartender was friendly, helpful and very bubbly! Pretty sure if we lived here, this would be our hangout!

We didn't try the food, but the ambiance is chill. Great drinks! Lillian is an amazing bartender/server! Great jams! Espresso martinis were delicious and pickle back shot were fire!

Purple Rain cocktail served up. Delicious thank you Dek for your great service!

The atmosphere 5 stars. The staff 5 stars minus the evening manager (Feb 15, 2026). The food and cocktails 5 stars. The evening manager really screwed with the employees who were there before he arrived. Really disrupted their good work flow. Disrupting customer and staff interactions. Made us feel uncomfortable when he seemed to critique or criticize their work in front of all customers. This guy needs leadership and management classes. I would not work for him. Broke all management rules. His employees were doing fine. You could literally watch their attitude change as they worked with him. Everything was great until he showed up. Respect your employees, educate and criticize in the back of the house not in the front. You were a buzz kill for your bar customers. Your staff was doing a great job. Sad to watch your interactions with them. Shame on you manager. Take some classes on how to motivate your people and not disrupt their work flow. Would have been 5 stars without the manager present. But could only give 4 stars because of him. Rating the manager would get 1 star.

Great googly moogly - fantastically welcoming, great drinks made by caring and friendly bartenders in a comfy room with plenty of different seating options to accommodate anyone. Good variety of beers and drinks, but not trying to be everything to all people - just aiming to be a great neighborhood bar and hitting that one out of the park. It's great. That said . . . the FOOD is actually better than that. The double cheeseburger with thinly sliced jalapeños was one of the best burgers I've had in years (and I have a lot of burgers). My wife liked her chili cheese dog, too, but - man, did I love that burger. I'll remember this place and I'll return next time we're in Chuck Town. Big John's Tavern is outstanding.

Great local dive bar. Free parking after 6 pm on week days. Holy City PILS rocks. Zak is the best! Stop by the oldest bar in Charleston, SC.

    Pork Rind in our food

My experience here was truly dissapointing. The service and food output time was terrible. It took about an hour and a half to receive our food. During that time, our server Nicole stood at her tablet ignoring our table, we made eye conta multiple times. She admitted to giving us regular coke instead of diet coke, which could be dangerous for someone with dietary restriction. We also found a pork rind in our curly fries. It's hazardous towards people that have certain allergies. Overall it took over 2 hours for a party of four and only five dishes.

Decent vibes here I like how laid back it feels. The burgers were decent but wasn't amazing. I'd go for happy hour for the best prices.

Food is mediocre. I honestly am not sure what the appeal is for this place. Ambience is also sub par. Overrated and would not return.

Don't let the name deter you if you are not a gin person because they have many options with different types of liquors. One tip: sit at the bar if you can, the set up is stunning especially for taking photos! The cocktail menu was moderately extensive with two full pages of complex and simple cocktails. Honestly, it was so difficult to choose what drink to get because I wanted to get everything on the menu. The bartenders were so attentive and talented - their implementation of each cocktail was even better than the menu descriptions. Not only were the drinks delicious but also beautifully presented. They have some bar bites as well as quite a few small and large plates, we got the pretzels which to my absolute surprise were so good! If I ever go back to Charleston, I will definitely be hitting this place up.

You can tell the bartenders know exactly what they're doing. The surprise star of the night, though, was the grilled cheese. Calling it a grilled cheese almost feels unfair because this thing was next-level. Perfectly crisp on the outside, rich and gooey on the inside, and paired with the cocktails so well that we were talking about it long after we left. Sometimes the simplest thing on a menu ends up stealing the show. The atmosphere strikes that perfect Charleston balance of classy, cozy, and effortlessly cool. Great service, great drinks, and one of the most memorable grilled cheese sandwiches I've ever had. If you're in Charleston and appreciate a serious cocktail program, The Gin Joint is a must-visit. Come for the drinks, stay because the grilled cheese will ruin lesser grilled cheeses for the rest of your life

Finds your table, if you arrive early for a reservation we had luck with them seating us and he says a kind goodbye as we left each time. Nice list of 3 mocktails so even if not consuming alcohol one can look to play the part at the table and enjoy the flavor notes of a well made cocktail. The first meal we had was a bit of a work/get together meal. We ordered an assortment of items off of the menu and created a more tapas menu. The charcuterie board we picked the cheeses for and it was lovely. All as expected and quite surprised to find a cheddar I enjoyed. Came with some grapes, figs, nuts, honey and I think mustard. Glazed carrots were phenomenal. Heartily enjoyed the beet salad and thought the presentation was quite pretty. Lamb lettuce wraps are alright. Not my favorite of all the dishes served but delivered as promised, nicely cooked and presented. Spouse really liked the lamb wraps and were a stand out dish to them. Meatballs are excellent truly great texture and flavor. Escargot was a fun take on a classic dish. Finished with a unique strudel in its presentation it was quite pleasant. Spouse liked the peanut butter chocolate dessert. For brunch, I had the carrot ginger soup. Which I must say was a total delight. The soup had the hallmark texture and base flavor of the carrot ginger but it had a beautiful breath of savory and some heat seasoning wise to it. It was quite an elevated soup and heartily enjoyed! I followed the carrot soup with a French toast. I am all for softly scrambled eggs but the French toast was a touch undercooked. (I did not let the restaurant know or give them the chance to make right. I regularly eat soft boiled eggs and soft scrambled so I felt comfortable with consuming them.) Strawberries were ripe and tasty. The whipped cream was gorgeous in thickness and flavor. One in law had the caesar salad with croutons and grilled chicken. Their bowl was left clean so while they are not the talkative of sorts they did seem to enjoy it. Ordered a baguette with butter. Unfortunately the butter never made it to the table but the baguette was enjoyed. Spouse had the Azur burger with the side of tapas style potatoes. All was cooked properly to temperature and texture. Flavor and taste as promised. Wasn't their favorite dish at Azur as we had tried so many lovely dishes a few evenings before. But it did deliver on what was represented in the menu. Other in law had the quiche and a side salad. They liked the quiche and would order it again.

The service was excellent -- polished, warm, and confidently attentive without ever feeling overdone. They know how to make a night feel special. And let me just say: the wine selection was excellent. Thoughtful pours, great bottles, and spot‑on pairing guidance. It felt curated, not crowded. Our table went in on a mix of dishes, and every single one delivered: * Waldorf salad -- crisp, bright, and beautifully balanced * Cioppino -- rich, aromatic, and full of tender seafood * Elevated swordfish -- perfectly cooked with that refined, coastal flair * Mussels -- tender, fragrant, and deeply seasoned * Filet mignon -- melt‑in‑your‑mouth and plated like a little moment High Cotton blends Southern charm with fine‑dining finesse, and it shows in every detail. My group left happy, impressed, and already planning the next visit. Charleston has plenty of great restaurants -- but High Cotton knows how to make you feel like you chose the right one.

We frequently dine at many of the higher-end restaurants in downtown Charleston and Mount Pleasant,…read moreso we arrived with high expectations, especially given this restaurant's connection to the Halls group. The dining room is beautiful, and the ambiance is excellent. Unfortunately, the service did not match the quality level or price point of the restaurant. When entrées range from $65-$70 for fish, $80+ for steaks, and side dishes approach $14 or more, guests reasonably expect an elevated and attentive dining experience. Throughout the evening, our server seemed rushed and disengaged. Despite our efforts to be friendly and conversational, interactions felt brief and transactional. A drink order was delivered incorrectly, and rather than improving as the meal progressed, the service became increasingly impersonal. We never felt particularly welcomed or valued as guests. A special night out with a $300-$400 check should feel memorable for the right reasons. While the food and atmosphere were good, the overall experience fell short of what we have come to expect from restaurants operating in this category and at this price level. We are glad we gave it a try, but in the future we'll likely choose other Charleston-area restaurants that deliver a more polished and hospitality-focused experience when entertaining family and friends from out of town.
