So...came into Mac's with service dog to grab a bite to eat while visiting, approached the bar and got terrible reception. (22 years of military service and can not even enter establishment). Confronted by patrons at bar about dog, making jokes about me and his gender. I don't even understand why! I politely asked drinking customers not to continue to speak to me and that I was only here to order. the bartender immediately came to there defense and told me that I had to depart. even though I tried to explain, he shunned me and took customers side. with every bit of training taught to me as an 11B(L) Infantry Army Ranger and grandfather, after being told by bartender that he would call police on me (patron just wanting to eat), I departed as my service dog shook. This hurts me more than the feelings and emotions that were evoked, more than the training...a retired vet and his service dog who just wanted to get a bite to eat. Arrived on New Years day and most places were closed or not seating anyone else so we decided to give this place a shot due to limited options. It is definitely a dive bar, however dont let the negative reviews keep you away. My one negative is that there are multiple tv's and they are LOUD. However, it is a sports bar and it is great if you want to watch the game they have on. Food was good, burgers with house chips and sweet potato tots. Unfortunately we didn't try any of their pub grub, since we were just walking through and needed a quick drink. But aside from the kind staff and incredibly cool decorated interior, their draft list was pretty decent and you truly can never go wrong with a Guinness on tap. Late night downtown on a Thursday, and we needed to eat after going to a show at the Gailliard Center. Mac's Place was open. Small crowd. Inside was chilly. We sat at the bar. Thursday night football was on. We got served pretty quickly. I ordered the chicken fingers & fries and my friend ordered the Chicken Wrap & fries. My chicken fingers were delicious. Extremely disappointed. Come here every year, but today the bartender on duty was more interested in talking to her coworkers at the end of the bar than providing service. What in the world did I just eat?! This was so good! I stopped in here with my kids, they wanted some chicken tenders and a place saying "pub 'n grub" on the sign looked like my best bet. Our server, Joseph, was super nice and friendly; this is really geared for adults and I had my kids with me and he was great with them. We started with the fried Mac & cheese bites and the fried pickles, both were winners. The kids both had chicken tenders; they are listed as appetizers but the size is so big these are shareable for 3-5 adults as appetizers or make a whole meal with food to spare (each kid brought home boxes). I had the Chicago Italian Beef sandwich. I have wanted to try one of these for ages; despite a few trips to Chicago over the years I just never had the chance. So glad I did! The meet was incredible and the flavor was off the charts, very spicy and I loved it! I also had a bowl of the stew which I loved too. Great flavor. We hit Mac's Place for late night drinks after a fun evening eating our way through downtown. it's located on East Bay across from the courthouse and it is a happening busy dive bar. To be located in the height of the tourist area of downtown Charleston, this bar is frequented by locals for sure. It has a plethora of booths and hightops along with a long bar. They have some arcade machines to add to the fun and vibe of the whole evening. we had a blast here. It was so much fun, so chill and relaxed. The staff were super efficient and helpful and the customers ranged from people having dinner to people having drinks, both locals and tourists. No expectations... just a place to hang and have fun. Yeah sorry 1 star is a gift. Stopped in Saturday night. Third trip here, waited to review for a better experience. The good: great place for sports . Many screens to watch. Day bartenders are great. It ends there. When we walked in the day shift left and night bartenders took over...We waited 15 minutes for the bartender to look our way to flag down the guy for a drink. 10 minutes later we eanted to order a snack, we waited 10 minutes to get his attention again. Bartender seemed highly insulted we waved him down. Hold on, it gets worse... the cleaner cut bartender comes over to explain to the the people next to us he was upset about the peacock network who changed the second game. He was complaining he had to switch around the HDMI cables so he let everyone know "the f***ing station could suck his d**k" with many more F bombs in his building sentences...wow, just wow. 12 years in the food service industry and never heard something so rude right in front of the older women beside us. The one woman turned beat red. We're not talking about 12am where there are all young kids in the bar. This was 630p at night. Families were sitting around watching the game. Plain rude and obnoxious. We ordered the cheese stuffed pretzel...it was hollow. No cheese...see the picture. In conclusion, I will never step in this place at night again. My two adult sons and I tried this place today for the first time. Living in Charleston we are making an attempt to try new places instead of continuing to eat at the same ones all the time. It was clean, not crowed and the service was excellent. Our Waiter did an outstanding job. The Food- We started with the Fried Pickles. We Love Fried Pickles and make it a point to try them wherever we go if they have them. Theirs were really good. The pickle was sliced thick but not too thick. They use higher quality pickle like a Vlasic. The white ones with excellent flavor. They were fried to a crisp and piping hot. Loved them! I ordered the French Dip. I haven't had one in years and wanted to try it. It wasn't bad but it wasn't all that. It had a lot of meat, was really hot and juicy. I just think it was missing some flavor. It needed something. And the hoagie fell apart from all the juice. The Chips were hot and crispy but needed salt. There was no salt on the table and by the time the Waiter came back I was almost done with them. Vinny Jr Got The Southern Style Cuban with Fried Mushrooms. He said the sandwich was good but he wished he would have tried something else. The mushrooms were hot and crispy but a little over breaded for his tastes. Jon- He got a Mac Burger with bacon and fries. He cleaned his plate so I guess it was great. He said it was good. Overall we all enjoyed it. While it has room to improve they are doing an excellent job in atmosphere, service and food. I think we may have found another option as a regular when we want to eat out. *3.5 stars! Stopped in here on a Saturday afternoon, with three girlfriends, for a quick bite before traveling home. (No one got a drink, so I can't speak to their drinks.) We had no problem getting a table without a reservation and the service was prompt. The vibe in here is really cool! There's some arcade games at the front and plenty of tables, in which you seat yourself. For appetizers we got the Irish nachos, the Guinness stew, cheese filled pretzels, fried pickles, mac and cheese bites, grilled shrimp (it's typically deep fried), and my two friends split a French dip. Some highlights of the meal were the Irish nachos and Guinness stew. Both were incredibly fresh and we all enjoyed the house made chips! Personally, i also LOVED the cheese filled pretzel. It's definitely not homemade, but was great and the cheese sauce provided with it was also delicious. In terms of service, the servers were also kind and mostly attentive (aside from sour cream situation explained below). On the downside, the mac and cheese bites use seasoned mac and cheese, so it has an undesirable kick. Most of us enjoy spicy, but this just did not taste good in our opinion. (No one at our table found this edible.) secondly, our food all came out very sporadicly and was not timed well. We received most of our appetizers then received the fried pickles and Irish nachos as we were pretty much finishing everything else- which was awkward since we got a sandwich, which is more of a meal before our appetizers. Lastly, my friend had to ask for sour cream 3x times to then be told they were sold out of it. (This happens, but we would've liked to hear that after the first time we asked for the condiment.) Overall, the food was good for the price point! Unfortunately, the flow of the meal was a little awkward and the mac and cheese bites were not good. Mac's is definitely bar food, but okay for a quick bite- some things are just better than others. Being in Charleston before, there are a lot better restaurants; but, without reservations, this works for sure! read more

Drinks were served in plastic cups but they have no fresh limes or lemons so you have a little cup of juice provided. It's extremely dark inside, however, the bar is huge and there is a lot of seating available. When I visited the inside was deem and it had this grimy feeling. Mac's Place has ample sitting for a variety of group sizes. I can see this easily being a starting place for anyone looking to start the night of with affordable drinks. They have a few arcade type games so it would be a cute date night starting spot. I only stopped by for a drink after dinner so I cannot speak for the food. The drink menu was a decent size and the prices were much more affordable than back home, it was my favorite part of the bar. The waitress was pretty nice and got our drinks quickly. I had a chance to visit the bathroom and I would not recommend it unless you absolutely need to, meaning you are crawling to get to the nearest bathroom.
