Popped into rec room last night for a couple late night cold ones and I'm happy to say that it still feels the same as it used to. It's true that I don't go out downtown as much anymore, but rec room was a regular haunt for me back in the day. While the age of the crowd has gotten younger or maybe I've gotten older the welcoming vibes that rec room offers to all walks of life is undeniable. I remember it being busy in the past, but never as packed as I saw it last night. Still a great time but cutting through the crowd to get to the bathroom was nothing short of Olympic athleticism. It was pretty packed but the tall guy Connor behind the bar was super friendly and funny. He made us feel right at home. It's everything you could want in a late night drink. First time here but not the last. A dear friend suggested we stop in this darkish quaint dive (said as a compliment) bar. Bartender Ian ensured the newcomers felt welcome for sure. His pours a nice drink and the beer is cold. The other patrons were very friendly too. When our friend walked in to join us, we realized he is the 'prince of chucktown'. Everyone knows him and hard to believe, we became locals (or so it felt) Now was the real test of any place we go. How are the wings? Well, we decided to share 10 naked with a side of jerk rub (delicious, maybe a hint of clove?) medium wing sauce (hotter next time) and blue cheese & celery. Always order fries too when trying a new place. Very very good. Actually outstanding. Our dinner plans were canceled for later. Everything was so good. Would I come here during the day? No. I love a good dive bar but it does feel dirty inside. Being almost under a bridge, I have seen a very large variety of patrons here. Parking is super easy across the street and I really appreciate their staff helping people cross safely. Their drink prices are great and I love the games they have. It's very chill environment but can often have over-served people dancing about. If your a PBR fan your in luck! $1 each and they sell a ton of it! A foozeball table and toy crane machine can be found inside as well. If your looking to dress up, trendy and cute this is not the venue for you. If you are looking for a relaxed, wear jeans and sneakers, even a sweatshirt and just hang for people watching and foozeball this is for you. read more

I feel like this is where all the odd balls of Charleston come to hang out and I love it! I say that with zero malice but one thing I love about this place is you can't categorize the crowd it attract all kinds of people. This is usually one of my last stops in a night out in town. The drinks are cheap bartenders are of decent speed considering there is an overwhelming demand at the bar from open to close with zero breaks. Fun Fact if you don't like the music you can take over the jukebox machine too, but there is still a decent variety. There's a small gravel portion in the back if the inside gets too much for you. Restrooms could do with a bit of a cleaning and more supplies though. This is a dive bar, don't come searching for anything else. Casual people, variety of ages, always a fun time. read more

To start off, the most disgusting place outside. The bouncer was SHAKING as he couldn't scan my REAL ID and took it and said he's done with me. I threatened to throw call the cops and he still didn't give me my id. This place is ghetto, disgusting and the bouncers need to be fired. read more

This was the best dive bar we spent time in during our trip and we hit a handful. Ian, our bartender was great and makes a tasty bloody mary. We walked in the Rec Room on a Saturday morning. It's a welcoming crowd of regulars. We had great conversations and left feeling we would go back again. Just a heads up they don't serve food on Saturday's until after 5pm. read more

So here's the thing- my friends legit thought I was leading them to our deaths. The location of this place is definitely off the beaten path, but THAT is part of what makes it so awesome. This place omg THIS place. I love it. Lemme break it down for you: BUILDING: Low-key old building off a good ways off of the main strip. Actually, there is legit ~nothing~ around it. I will reiterated DIVE BAR so don't go in there expecting it to be some highfalutin fancy-pants place. It is a d-i-v-e b-a-r. Also the decor is epic. BOOZE: They have a great selection of beers and liquors. FOOD: I mean, they have a menu, but I don't know I would actually eat here. I could be wrong. I didn't partake, though. Read what other people have to say about this subject. BARTENDERS: Loved them. They were attentive, expedient, and seemed to love working there. MUSIC: We were there on a Friday night. They had two DJs spinning and they were -I don't know how else to say it- AWESOME. I know not every night would be like that, but I assume the people who run it make good choices. With a name like that, how can I say no? It's a bit north of the happening area in Charleston but there's a few restaurants width checking out nearby and this is a solid spot to get your drink on on the way back down to the city area. It's right off the highway so accessing it could be a bit tricky so map it out and drive slow when approaching. The exterior immediately put me in a good mood because I like those old beat up dive bars with nothing but strong and healing pours of whiskey with a dark wooden interior. There's plenty of parking under the rank although Uber is highly recommended. The drinks are super cheap and even when they're packed, they are still efficient with taking and serving your order. Not everyone enjoys dive bars but I do and this place is a perfect embodiment of what it takes to be a timeless watering hole. read more

Out lookin for some hair-of-the-dog with our pooch seemed to be an absolute fail in this town on a Sunday morning but luckily we found this place. I know it's hipster and divey, but I just don't care. I freaking love Rec Room. Trivia night is awesome if you ever get a chance to go. The bartenders are prompt and are really great about giving everyone attention, no matter how crowded the bar is. If that doesn't sell you, how bout this: TATER TACHOS. Yeah, you read that right. Tater tots covered in melted cheese, green peppers, onions, Jalapenos, and Tomatoes. Seriously, sign me up for that. read more

Always resisted this place, but turns out was my mistake. Looks like a real dive from outside, and turns out it does inside too, but what a great space. First off, it is full of game machines and game tables, including classics and pinball machines. The "art" on the walls can keep you occupied for ages. Gets very busy, at least at weekends, and although mostly a younger crowd, a real mix of people. Sitting outside in their unique beer garden by the side of busy underpass, we met a ton of people who just struck up a conversation. Prices are great, and bar staff very efficient. This is Charleston's best dive. I'll argue with anyone about that fact. They have the best happy hour in Charleston. This is a very economical place to drink and it doesn't take more than 10 bucks to get drunk (don't drink and drive take an Uber or get a ride). Anyway this is a cool bar with a pool table, games, darts, etc. You can drink PBR for cheap during happy hour and that's what makes it one of my favorites. Well liquor and mixed drinks are cheap as well. Food is greasy bar food and if you are okay with that than you'll love it. Great wings!! And a great price for them too. Kitchen is only open at certain times of the day however. Bartenders are awesome. Very attentive at the bar but if your sitting anywhere else besides the bar you have to go up and order. They have a good draft/beer selection as they have a great liquor and spirits selection as well. Definitely on par with some of the upscale bars in Charleston in terms of selection. This place is not for everyone. You have to be really about the dive life to fully appreciate it. The bar brings in people of all races colors and creeds which makes it an awesome bar to hangout. From the outside it look rough and unfriendly but if you walk in you will find a gem. This is one of my favorite bars in Charleston and have had lots of good memories here. Just an awesome atmosphere. They seem to have lots of cool events as well. Great to watch football. During the Army-Navy game they put up a projector and a screen and you could view it anywhere. It's a good thing too, since Charleston needs places that are just chill (not the stuffy fancy trend). They have a wide selection of beers, but what really moves is the PBR. Its price is low and the food deals at happy hour/late night menus are budget-friendly. I had wings and they were pretty good. The bartenders were really fast and nice.
