Since this was my first time at this location I went down every aisle. I have commented in the past that all the Publix stores are laid out the same way, which makes it easier to navigate around an unfamiliar location. Well, that theory is exploded. Almost nothing I wanted was in its familiar spot. But that's Ok, I got some walking exercise and it made my shopping experience fun! This store is one of the few locations that has an olive bar ($10.99 lb). They were out of the Greek Olive Salad I love, but still had plenty of other selections for an olive lover, including an Artichoke Salad. They were also out of a lot of things I normally shop for at Publix: Distilled Water, Sweet N Sour marinade, Pickled Ginger, and Chicago Style Giardiniera. Now I understand most of those items are obscure, but Distilled Water? Really? That's like being out of stock on digital gift cards! (Amazingly Bing is out-of-stock on Digital Amazon Gift cards, but that's another story). There are a LOT of employees. I didn't have any trouble snagging one to find out if the item I wanted was out-of-stock or just hiding from me. I talked to about 1/2 dozen employees. 3 of them were on the ball, and 3 were clueless; Which is above average for grocery store employees in my opinion.

After two shopping experiences, I am blown away by the difference as the Publix across the street is deplorable. The staff here is friendly and helpful. Every item I've wanted on sale or not has been in stock. They have every type of publix branded cheese available including the shaved Italian mix and crumbled goat cheese. So far the produce selection has been stellar. They also had a full seafood counter with everything in stock. Perhaps Publix is still a pleasure if you go to the right store.

As an adult, I was my grandmother's caregiver when she could no longer shop for herself. She would send me with her check, her ID, and I'd show my ID. This was never an issue. Ever. Fast forward to now -- I'm caring for my dad. He's feeble, can't walk well, can't hear well, and cannot comprehend things the way he used to. I handle his grocery shopping. I did it three weeks ago the exact same way. No problem. Today? Suddenly I'm told, "No, you're not on the check. It's our policy. We can't accept it." When I asked when the policy changed, I was told it never changed and whoever helped me before was "wrong." I'm calling BS on that. So let me get this straight -- I can present his ID, my ID, I'm clearly the caregiver, and you're still refusing the check? For elderly people who still use checks because that's what they know? Yes, checks may be old school -- but so are a lot of your loyal customers. The ones you claim to care so much about. Thankfully, I had the money in my own account today, and going forward I'll be fine -- I have a better-paying job starting soon. But that's not the point. The point is this policy (or the way it's being enforced) is ridiculous, inconsiderate, and completely disconnected from reality. Between this experience and the way it was handled, I will no longer be shopping at Publix. After a lifetime of loyalty, this was the final straw. Do better.

Produce was fresh, flowers were fresh. The customers can be a little overly-hurried, especially in the parking lot. I'm not telling you anything you dont know. I said coffee. It surprises me that there is not a whole lot of variety in sourcing and roast-styles. This Joe's has a small coffee section in the back left corner, around 40 options. Somehow the selection seemed rather sparse. Maybe they've been outdone by local roasters. Poor me, right? Well, I saw two dark roasts, and I grabbed 100% Trader-Joe's-brand arabica French roast whole beans. At home, they looked gorgeously shiny and the aroma was rich. They tasted quite good! Fresh and bold without excess acid or bitterness. Ok, Joe's, well-done. We headed for the wine corner, and were rewarded with tiny samples of a smooth whiskey and a fresh nut-mix, offered by a bold fellow with a short distinctively-curly mustache. We scanned the wines and got an inexpensive $5.50 Espiral Portuguese Vinho Verde, a very-light slightly-sparkling slightly-sweet white wine. Typically it's thought of as a summer wine to drink chilled for any non-serious pairing with non-serious food. We like it because, as long as it's not flat and not a noticeably sour brand, vinho verde is a nice year-round evening-blurry treat. And we got some mixed-flowers for a bright reminder of a pleasant shopping experience.

Knock out all my weekly necessities with one stop! Nice! Staff are very friendly and helpful here. The store seems well stocked every time I've come in. I normally purchase the wallflowers, hand soaps and the scentportables for my car. I get their coupons in the mail every week...or month? (I dunno, I seem to get them all the time!). So I'll always pickup my freebie and use a coupon for my purchase.

I am 99% certain the first time I went the sign included "for maintenance issues". So I'd assumed it would've been reopened by now. Yesterday another woman was at the door along with me. We noticed numerous stickers from either fedex or ups to indicate failed delivery of packages. I suspect this Gateway store may not reopen. Don't waste your time driving here unless you call ahead.
