Gary is a no nonsense craftsman!! Fantastic work done right the first time, and in my case, lightning fast!!

Had a few things I wanted put on my bike (new tires, frame sliders, etc). Gary went above and beyond and tightened my chain, lubed it, replaced the brake fluid, and topped off the oil... in addition to all the things I needed! Best of all? The bike runs AMAZING!!! Switching from Triumph, to Kawasaki, I'm so happy I found a go-to mechanic I can trust. That's both local and isn't corporate owned. Highly recommend! read more

Service was great. Clean shop. The guy knew his motorcycle which was nice. He was able to get to my bike right away and have it done when said. Not the best location, on a tricky corner. But not a lot of traffic. And I was able to swing my trailer around good enough. read more

Gary Black is a master mechanic and he explains everything. I brought him my new to me 2010 Honda NT700VA and wanted the valves adjusted and a safety check. Gary noticed that my clutch cable was needing adjustment, something l didn't even notice. Services completed included: valve adjustment, spark plug and air filter replacement, clutch cable adjustment and lubrication, oil & filter change, bled and replaced front and rear brake fluid, flushed and refilled cooling system, replaced final drive oil, wired top box brake light and some very arduous fabrication. I am extremely and totally impressed and satisfied with his work and I look forward to visiting him next time I need a mechanic. He's the real deal. I made an appointment for a tire change, then my tire got held up by a major storm. Gary had no problem rescheduling my appointment when it arrived. I dropped my bike off in the morning for the new tires and had it back in the early afternoon. He noticed a couple mechanical issues with my clutch, and when I said I'd probably handle it myself he gave me recommendations on which brand to use. While he was changing my tire, he also corrected a few minor errors a dealership made when reinstalling my hard bags. While I just had my tire changed this time around, I would trust him to do more critical work that was outside of my abilities. Also, Gary, you said I'd thank you about the kickstand, and yeah. Gary works on bikes, and he works on bikes well. That's about all there is to tell. He isn't there to up-sell you on a million little things you didn't know you needed but, gosh, does your bike ever need them now, nor is he in it to see as many bikes as possible as quickly as possible. He works on bikes and he'll get them running tip-top, provided you can stomach the lengthy summertime lead-time. I took my recently purchased '93 Nighthawk 750 in for a general inspection and a tune up in preparation for a long trip ahead. I don't have a ton of mechanical know-how, but I staked a few things out and asked Gary to take a look. The worst was light rust in the gas tank and a potential carb clean. Gary checked it out, assessed my needs based on my circumstances, and instead of insisting on billing me $1000 to address the carbs and tank told me straight that there wasn't much point. My bike ran well owing to some craftiness owed to the prior owner, and such a job wouldn't make it run any better. If I only cared to hang onto this thing for another year or two at the most, I'd be fine if I winterized well come the cold season and kept the tank full of gas. I don't know too many shops that offer the truth. It's lame to say, but I feel like Gary is in it for the bikes and their riders over anything else, and you can bet I'll be coming back should I need to. That said, I reckon I won't be needing to: this service's done my ride well. read more

Gary is your classic no-nonsense kind of mechanic. He will not try to upsell you services you don't need for your bike. In fact, he'll likely recommend you to "not" work on something to keep your costs low. If you have something specific that you want him to work on, make sure to let him know ahead of time. Also note that he's the only mechanic in town that's open on Mondays. If you ever find yourself stranded in the middle of a Monday. Call the AAA and have them send the bike up to Cycle Metrics, it'll probably be the best thing that's ever happened to your bike. read more

Once in a while you run into someone who knows what she or he is talking about. That's called competence. Gary of Cycle Metrics is that guy. I am qualified to make that judgement. I'm arrogant enough to think that I can fix any problem on any motorcycle I own. I got in touch with him when I was over my head about the front forks on a very old Honda ('81 GL500). His shop is nearby. The short story is: He told me how to solve the problem, got the right parts, and even called me confirm that the bike had been modified (I didn't know but he was right). My father has been taking his motorcycles here since sometime in the 90's. He introduced me to Gary with my first bike and I've been going back ever since. This guy lives and breaths motorcycle repair. He's direct, honest, and always willing to tell you how it is. Though his core business is motorcycles, he has worked on my cars on a couple of occasions (most recently my Chevy Suburban). I like taking vehicles to him because I feel like I can trust his opinion and expertise. When replacing the water pump in my Suburban, the new replacement part failed and he swapped it out at no charge and without bitching (except about shoddy workmanship on the part he had put in). Great guy, great little shop. I recommend this place to anyone who rides that doesn't want to take their bike to the stealership for work. read more

I've gone to Gary multiple times over the past 6 years or so with my '08 KLR650. This bike has been all over the West, totaled once, and has needed a tune-up here and there. I try to work on it when possible, and hesitate to leave it with other people who may lie, take advantage of me, or do poor work. As a nursing student, I am super short on time and money. I have been nothing but happy with Gary and the work he's done. I never feel like he's trying to get money out of me. He has helped me to understand what needs repairing and why, offering options when possible to suit my preferences or budget. He has graciously answered questions for me in his spare time over the phone, and did a great job rebuilding the front end when I had an unfortunate encounter with a BMW a few years back. I always felt like he was on my side through that ordeal. I love dropping my bike off with Gary. The courtesy helmet hooks in his office are a nice touch, too! Whether I'm leaving it there or riding away, I always leave happy. As a Jeep owner, too, I just feel like I'm in good company! Logistical note: Bus service to this area is pretty seldom. I recently purchased my first motorcycle. I took it to Gary at Cycle Metrics for it's 600 mile service. I didn't realize how poorly it had been set up until Gary got done with it!! It's like a whole new machine! For example, I had been having a very hard time finding second gear. Starting through an intersection when the light turns green... and finding myself in the middle of the intersection in neutral with the engine revving up is very embarrassing. I thought it was me just being a lame new rider. But just a few blocks into my ride after picking it up from Gary, I could tell that I didn't know what I had been missing. I recently had Gary perform a small metal fabrication job for me, and I could not have been more pleased with the results. The end result is simply beautifully fabricated - professional-looking welds, cuts that needed absolutely no cleanup, and exceptionally precise measurements. It's a shame his work is going to be hidden in the underbelly of my car and not on public display! I found him to be straightforward, communicative, and possessing an excellent eye for the details, and in the end, he was on-time and his price was highly competitive. Gary Black is that rare blend of no-nonsense and personal care. He was recommended to me by my California mechanic's fishing buddy as being the most honest mechanic in Portland. I told him about the problems I suspected, and said I just needed to get my Jeep as far as Wyoming. He called me the following afternoon and said there had been a number of fixes necessary...the total bill for all the fixes he caught was less than the quote I'd had from another mechanic for just one fix. To underscore my comment, I have been coming to Cycle Metrics for over 10-yrs. now and while the owner couldn't tell a joke to save his soul, he has always been straight with me and everyone that I have sent there too. I can't say enough or recommend Gary Black enough! My bike has seen Beaverton Honda a few times under warranty work and another "mechanic", went to him based off of fellow riders recs and not only was he true to his word on time, he fixed stuff I didn't know was wrong! I called this shop because I had a problem with my clutch on my Yamaha XT250. The owner told me that moisture was probably in the clutch plates, and that was my problem. I told him that I did notice moisture with the cover off, so now I'm going to take that clutch apart. How many people would help you like that, instead of staying quiet and insisting you bring the bike in? He helped me and made no money on this, and I told him I would give him a good review, which is the least I can do, so here it is. read more

Gary definitely seems like a nice guy. But the work he did on my girlfriends motorcycle was poor. charged us a lot of money and the bike came back the same it went in. There was a lot of beating around the bush, saying that you can't get parts for the carb in our cb200t anymore which was a flat out lie. Got the hint that he didn't want to work on the bike anymore. I'm sure he's great with other's, just not us. Will be working on the bike ourselves from now on. read more
