First I want to say that I booked this room at the last minute after another long standing reservation at another fell through, but that's a review for another page... I am completely aware that booking a frugally priced accommodation in an area where rooms are at least two times the price is going to have its "negative aspects" or "below standard" aesthetics. I like to look at the whole picture and base my reviews, as I always mention, on my experience and in my opinion. My Daughter and I arrived at 3:30, 30 minutes before "check in". We walked in to the lobby and were immediately greeted warmly by a nice hostess. We asked if it was too early to check in and she said "No not at all". After giving her my name she couldn't find my reservation, I started to panic a bit, because of my other reservation catastrophe, but after looking around a bit deeper she found my reservation in another folder. Super easy check in! She told us she was giving us the Horizon Ocean View room, which I wasn't expecting (bonus), and then gave us a map of all the nearby shops and restaurants, which looked overwhelming, but she explained it all in detail, including letting us know the shops close early, where the market was, and where other guests have recommended eating. Another thing she addressed right away was that there was no breakfast provided in the morning and that the owner never did bring that feature back. To me completely okay. I'd rather eat somewhere else than my hotel anyways. We were informed that the beach was about 8 blocks south and that while it's a nice walk to remember that on the way back it's uphill. :) We were then given a paper pass for our car so we could park in the below level parking garage. That's also a nice bonus. No need to look for parking! Everything is so close honestly there's no need to drive. So yes the outside of the hotel is dated, but nothing about it gave me a creepy Motel 6 vibe (no offense motel 6). We went up to our room and everything was nice and clean. Again a little drab, but not dirty, dusty, or full of spider webs... There was a desk and chair, a little bar area where the coffee pot was set next to a sink and mini fridge underneath, a two seater couch in front of the push to start fireplace, another lounge chair with ottoman, our king size bed with bench at the foot. There's a TV with HDMI capability but no USB (I take my fire stick with me and use the usb to plug in to most TVs as the power adapter). There's a balcony with two chairs and a little table. Yes the view right below isn't the most visually appealing but we weren't looking at people in their backyards or dealing with any noise. In fact it was very quiet. In the night it was easy to hear the ocean roaring as we sat for a bit on the balcony. The balcony door needs a little oil it makes a bit of noise and is not so smooth gliding open and closed. That doesn't bother me, but the sound it may make to others around me does. The closet and vanity with sink sits in its own room outside of the toilet and shower area. That is a nice feature also when you have two woman getting ready. There is a thermostat on the wall but from looking at it I guessed it was for air conditioning only. We used the fireplace often and it seemed to keep the room warm enough. For what I paid for the night I was very happy. I have stayed at very opposite ends of quality hotels and motels. I am neither rich nor poor a (complete) snob or dramatically inclined. I like to think, like my reviews, I'm fair and balanced. I hope this helps someone in their search for a spot. We had a great time for a one night get away and the savings on the room allowed us to eat and shop more! read more

We've stayed at this property 6 times over the past 3.5 years. We've been to Carmel ~20 times over the past decade and stayed in several different hotels. The price of this hotel has steadily gone up and the quality has steadily gone down. Originally we chose to stay at this hotel for the following reasons that were appealing as we have young kids: 1. Large room 2. Central location 3. Onsite parking Those are the only positives. The large room is spacious but severely outdated and now borders on soiled. The carpets are matted and dirty, the balchonys are beat up, the bathrooms are falling a part (one of the showers wouldn't drain and couldn't get hot water). The mini fridge isn't the right fit for the mini bar area and the door catches on the bar, it's almost impossible to get open. The TV's are large but out dated, they do not have smart connections/apps, so no Netflix or streaming services, just basic Monterey Bay cable. When we first stayed here a few years ago, the room had a decent (but distant) ocean view. Now the residential neighbors directly behind the room have allowed their hedges to grow so high that the view is very much obscured. In another year or two the view will be gone. The manager (I belive Sergio?) is rude and unfriendly. He's never once said something as simple as "welcome back." He almost seems bothered by the fact that people are staying at the hotel. There are zero amenities or offerings. Just about all of the hotels in Carmel have some type of benefit. E.g. complimentary wine in the afternoon, cookies in the lobby, fresh coffee in the morning, a light breakfast available, anything. This place has generic bottled water that you have to walk down and request at the lobby. No fill station, no filtered water coolors, just lots of wasted plastic bottles. We paid $725.00+ per night and afterwards realized that many of the nicest hotels in Carmel that are completely modeled with a long list of complimentary ammenities and offerings are less expensive. We will never stay at the Adobe Inn again. read more

The reason I picked here is underground private parking and location. Everything else was below average. The lodging facilities are outdated. I saw spiderwebs here and there in the room. We were assigned to a king room although had especially reserved two queen beds at Expedia.com. Room was not ready till 4pm. The receptionist told me it was an overbooking issue with the third party. She helped to put a rollaway bed. No one ever mentioned any amenities to me, except the parking and "no breakfast provided". Not impressed at all. read more

Had an OK stay up until checkout (even though the hotel seemed to be very overpriced for what you get) Rooms are not particularly clean etc. Although I can't of course prove anything, As I checked out and left, I realized I had left my belt (which was my late fathers belt) in the drawer in room. I know for a fact I left it there as I wouldn't have left a belt anywhere else during my stay. Unfortunately upon calling in, No-one seems to have found it. Sadly very suspicious .... I don't believe house keeping is as honest here so please make sure you leave nothing behind. Not a very pleasant thing to have to go through. They had a small pool which I wanted to note first because it's what my kids were exciting about! We stayed here during our overnight stay in Carmel. It's a cute place with parking available underground. There is a small elevator from the parking area to the other floors but it is super tiny so can only fit so many people. I felt like having just four of us in there with our baggage was pushing it already in the elevator. It is run down and breakfast was not served because of Covid-19, which is understandable. The location of the place is central to a lot of restaurants and shopping so we would love to stay here again. read more

Sergio will go above and beyond his responsibilities to make sure your needs are met to the highest degree. The location is ideal. The hotel is located in the center of beautiful Carmel by the sea. The rooms at the Adobe Inn are large and spacious and include all your necessities. The hotel also includes private underground parking and an elevator. My husband and I have been celebrating our wedding anniversary in Carmel for 48 years. We have stayed at the Adobe Inn several times, however our latest trip on October 4th of this year ended poorly. We had to leave very early the morning of the 5th as my husband became ill. Once we got home 3 hours later my husband ended up in the emergency room and soon after in ICU. The manager charged us for the second day stating it was "policy" and initially refused to reverse the charge. After consideration, the manager called us back and reversed the charge. Please thoroughly go through the Adobe Inn's reviews. You'll notice a trend, nothing has improved here. Our family stayed here for a few nights. The rooms along with the furniture, linen, and towels are well overdue for replacement. The carpet and tile floors are worn as stained. All three TVs in each room did not get reception for all nights of our stay. Looks like this is typical. All three rooms had electric outlets that did not work along with a light switch that worked intermittently. One room's bathroom door would not shut. I am aware this is a Three Star hotel. My expectations are definitely scaled, but the condition of this place is unacceptable and worthy of only 1 star. The conditions described are cumulative and obviously neglected. No, it cannot be attributed to the pandemic, these conditions existed long before. Honestly, the whole place is so worn down I even question the integrity of the stairs and elevator. Don't say you weren't warned. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere. read more

When COVID restrictions briefly loosened in June, we took the opportunity to break the monotony of staying home. We visited Carmel by the Sea for 3 days and stayed in Adobe Inn. Although we're just from the Bay, we've never been here so this was a good excursion as the town is beautiful!! I highly recommend visiting. Adobe Inn is a quaint, no-nonsense boutique hotel in the heart of Carmel by the Sea. They are pet friendly which is why I zeroed in on them as a place to stay. When I called to make a reservation, Sergio was quoted an affordable rate for my family of 3 adults and 1 dog. Since COVID has slowed tourism, their promos are pretty attractive. Adobe Inn's Positives (in no specific order) - Free Parking (basement) - Pet Friendly (specific rooms only) - Location and proximity to town center Negatives (in no specific order) - Uncomfortable Beds (we had a 2-queen bed room and man. those beds hurt our backs. When 2 people occupy the bed, when one moves, the other feels it) - Dated Room that didn't feel clean - Ours had a smell that can best be described as "old room." It was large but had NO furniture in it. Just the two beds, a single floor lamp, a single chair and a small table. Maybe they removed all the furniture because of COVID but ours was a sad looking room. On top of that, we wiped down all the surfaces cuz we didn't feel it was clean and the carpet definitely needed a good shampoo. - Room needs more lighting Room context: we stayed on the ground floor. I think our room number was 25. It was facing someone's house and backyard. You can definitely hear the neighbors. It wasn't a bad thing for us but if you're noise sensitive, this is important to know. Would I book in this same hotel? Hmm. Tough question. I would consider it because the location really can't be beat but I definitely would wait for a promotion. No thanks if they asked me to pay full price for the room that we got. read more

My wife, son and I stayed at Adobe Inn the weekend of 7/24-7/26, and unfortunately I have to report that we were not satisfied with our stay for a number of reasons. I booked through Hotels.com and, as per the listing on the site, breakfast for two people was included in the price of the room. When we arrived and checked in, we were told that not only would breakfast not be served, but that our room would not be cleaned daily, either. We were not expecting this. Strikes one and two. I understand that due to Covid-19 that certain concessions and limitations must be implemented, which would have been easier to accept had these concessions extended to the price of the room. We paid a total of $632.59 for two nights, an average of $316.30 per day, and to not have the aforementioned basic services was disappointing to say the least. There were cheaper alternatives where we could have stayed if we were looking for bare amenities. Next, we were also informed that a coffee maker and associated supplies would be provided upon request only. We asked to have a coffee maker etc. brought to the room, and it was promptly delivered shortly after we got to the room. It wasn't until Sunday morning that we realized that the 'Best By' date on the coffee packaging had expired! The decaf packages were dated September 2019 and the regular packages were dated May 2020. (I have attached pictures with this review). We called the front desk and reported the issue, and were told that non-expired coffee packages would be brought up to the room (though, no apology was given). Ten minutes or so later, we received a call from the front desk and were informed that they were only able to find non-expired coffee packages for decaf; they did not have any for regular. We declined as we do not drink decaf. We were told that there were many great coffee places in the area (really?). Again, no apology was given. Strike three. Suffice to say, I will avoid this hotel upon subsequent visits. read more

My fiancé and I are currently in California for business and decided to visit Carmel by the sea for the weekend. We ended up booking a second floor ocean view room at the Adobe Inn at the urging of my fiancés boss. To be honest, I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did, but I enjoyed my stay. For one, I had the best nights rest I've had all week at this place lol. The beds weren't super soft, but they weren't hard either. The staff at the front desk were extremely polite and made recommendations regarding food and things to do. The hotel is also right in the heart of town and extremely close to all the shops. Everything is a walkable distance and very convenient. Also the place provides parking so you don't have to worry about your car. The only criticisms are when reservations were made, we were told we would get a complementary breakfast. However, upon our arrival we were told there wasn't breakfast due to covid. Also the elevator located in the garage is scary and extremely small! Lol...never seen an elevator that small. Besides this two things, I would definitely visit this inn again. read more

I just booked a room for what I thought was supposed to be this Friday through Saturday for a mini vaca but managed to click on the wrong dates. Neither Expedia or the hotel would help me out to change the date for the correct date. Then they told me all hotels had a minimum of a two night stay. I booked a room at another hotel in the area for one night and took the hit for this hotel after making an honest mistake. Way to help a customer out who did enjoy the customer service the first time she stayed there. Will not be staying here after that lousy customer service. They tried to overcharge me but said if I emailed them proof they would honor the price. I emailed and then spoke to the manager. The manager did not share his employee's sentiment that they would honor the price. He refused to adjust the price. When I told him I would dispute it with Hotels.com he threatened to check me out, leaving me with no place to go. NOTE: The price he was trying to charge me for was $400 a night, there is not a room in this hotel that is worth $250 a night. Stayed here over the weekend to celebrate my moms birthday! They're dog friendly, which was a must for us and our pup :) Another plus was the location! Tons of restaurants and shops near by, it's basically in the heart of Carmel. The room was pretty spacious and had a cute little fireplace. We left the window open and turned on the fireplace.. is that weird? Lol.. The breakfast they offer isn't much, I suggest checking out some of the other restaurants near by instead ( Katy's Place was a personal fav). The pool area is really small and only good for a group of 2-4 to enjoy at once. Only 2 lounge chairs available. Although the pool is heated and feels amazing after a day at the beach. Sadly, no hot tub though. And the sauna is... a little different than expect.. idk! But overall had a great experience and wouldn't mind coming back here again! read more

My wife and I stayed here an were unaware the U.S. Open was at Pebble Beach so the prices for all the hotels in the area were ridiculous. The Adobe needs updating badly as it's furnishings are way out of date. Our queen bed was very uncomfortable and needs replacement as it sagged in the middle. And before you ask, both my wife and I are thin! On the positive side, the front desk clerk was exceedingly nice and helpful and I can't say enough about her customer service and great attitude. The continental breakfast was ok but kinda sparse. The grounds were beautiful. I would give this about 2.5 stars. read more

There is much to like here: Quiet, large room, nice people, dog friendly, they have big garage that will accommodate an SUV with a carrier and, most important, it is well located. Much not to like, too: The heat works erratically so that after fiddling with it half the night, I finally put my down parka on and went back to bed. The shower has very little pressure. They use paper cups. The coffee maker is lousy. There aren't enough towels. They aren't serving the continental breakfast that they advertised due to a shortage of staff. They need to put that on the website. I like the place but I'd probably try another next time...and maybe return here. read more

For over $400 a night, you'd think they would accommodate a one hour late checkout. They claimed that there was only one maid to clean 17 rooms that was checking out on that day and that there was no exception for late checkout. I am sure as hell that one maid cannot clean all 17 rooms at the same time. When we approached the girl at the desk, she rigidly said "NO", like someone who loves having the power of telling others "NO". A good service establishment would say "we are very busy at this time, but we will see what we can do", especially for the rate they charge. I kept asking her why can't the maid clean the rooms that had already been checked out first, and she just kept on making excuses why they can't do it. Then she got hostile and refused to print a receipt for us, but eventually did after I told her that they are required to provide a receipt. Dealing with her was like talking to a rock, nothing got through. She should not be working in a service industry, to say the least. As for the room, it was extremely outdated (old carpet that looked like it hasn't been cleaned for a while, light in the bathroom sink did not work, the towels were cheap (like something you'd get at a dollar store), toilet seat that was loose and tilted to one side, the chairs looked old and dirty, and the alarm clock did not work). The nightstand was covered with dust. We had a spider drop to the floor from the ceiling one morning. According to the place, our room was a "VIP" room, which kind of makes me wonder how that is possible. With all being said, our room did have some view of the water, with obstructions by trees. There was absolutely no value in this place. I would never recommend anyone to stay here. read more

This place is amazing, so incredibly accommodating and WOW what service, I felt sooo incredibly special to get to our room and find this fruit basket and note card. We will stay here every year moving forward. Great hosts, close to shopping and dining, our room is huge and has an extra room attached to it for our son so my hubby and I can have some intimate time on my birthday. Still missing the breakfast deliveries and fireplaces! The hotel was super clean, charming and cozy. We were a little overwhelmed finding a hotel in Carmel/Monterey because so many are so pricey! We didn't know what we'd get with the Adobe Inn, but I definitely plan on staying again! We also loved Carmel and are so happy with our decision to stay in Carmel instead of super touristy Monterey. Our room was really spacious, and had a gigantic balcony that you could see the ocean from! The location is great, and is in walking distance from the beach and all the cute little shops in Carmel. It was so relaxing and nice to come back inside and turn the fireplace on. Breakfast was also great! it is only continental, but it's pretty nice having breakfast delivered to your room every morning! Great customer service! The lady at the front desk was professional and helpful. We booked the last room on Labor Day weekend, so yes it was expensive... but they had baked cookies in the lobby, which my kids enjoyed. They continental breakfast was so simple, yet so satisfying; it was delivered to our room - and such a great compliment to the hotel stay. The pool was decent, and our kids enjoyed it... they enjoy any water areas, they can have fun pretty much anywhere. The best was the patio and street view from the room. We were walking distance to all the local shops and restaurants. Although, at nighttime it was a little loud outside, it wasn't anything unexpected. Not sure if they had AC or not but we couldn't figure out how to turn it on. That was the only bummer coz it was hot! Overall, the price maybe steep, but it is Carmel and if you plan to be cheap and picky... then drive home and sleep on your bed.... and if you are here to pinpoint every broken detail this hotel is not for you. Stayed here for mom's birthday, family wanted to visit Carmel for the weekend. Reasonable price for two room suite, especially compared to other rooms in Carmel. Felt like we had the whole town to ourselves, not a winter season destination I guess. Outdoor pool was heated and we had it all to ourselves. Location is great, just a block away from all the shops and restaurants. Has a complimentary breakfast with room which was nice, staff was great as well. Fireplace was a nice touch. First of all -- great location and dog friendly. We stayed two nights and made it to the beach three times. Second -- fireplace, wet bar, fridge, hot shower, sauna and pool all worked well. Downsides -- restaurant and bar are closed. Place feels like its heyday was 1955. We liked it but nothing at all fancy about it. They try-- cookies and mints on the pillow, but first night only. We stayed here this past weekend for our anniversary trip to Carmel. There are so many places to stay in Carmel but we didn't want to break the bank on the room. Everything was really nice - it's not a fancy place but the gardens are really pretty, everything is clean, the bad is really nice and it's great to have a fireplace in the room. Some reviewers have commented that the breakfast wasn't good, but we found it just perfect. The muffins were warm when they came to our room, and breakfast was delivered right on time. The fruit was fresh and presented very nicely. It was so nice to have the parking garage below and just leave the car there all weekend so we could just walk around. You can't beat the location. We are really pleased with our choice to have stayed here. read more

I would recommend this hotel time and time again. There was a miscommunication regarding check-in times but the manager went above and beyond to accommodate us. My husband and I stayed here for one night before running the Big Sur half Marathon in Monterey. I chose this place because it did not have a two-night minimum say for a Saturday night, and the rate was very reasonable. We stayed in mid- November. The hotel itself has a courtyard with a bunch of plants-- it has a very lush feel. A very small pool that we didn't try.There is complimentary covered parking for hotel guests. Extremely central to the restaurants and shops in Carmel-- everything is in an easy walking distance. Its location is certainly the best feature. We had a big room with a king-size bed. The fireplace worked (though we didn't use it-- we only checked because of the other review). Comfy bed and very hot shower that we appreciated after the race. The window opened right onto the street and there was a small balcony. The weather was rainy, so we didn't sit out there-- I think it would have been very nice in better weather. The negatives-- the hotel is a bit on the old side-- the doors were not insulated, so you could hear people coming and going. My husband heard nothing in his sleep-- so this is only my complaint and not his. Another negative is that they actually give you a metal key for the room. That means you actually have to be responsible-- I don't know if there is a charge if you lose it. Last negative is that they have plastic drinking cups in the room-- not glass. This is simply a pet peeve of mine-- I travel a lot on business and find plastic cups in hotel rooms depressing. In sum, we would definitely stay here again based on the location, the rate ad the size of the room. read more

Cute small hotel in a great location, walking distance and central to all the things-to-do in Carmel. Underground parking in a town with limited parking is a plus. I typically stay at corporate hotels throughout the year for business, about 75-90 nights per year, so the Adobe Inn was a nice change of pace. The room was good size, fixtures all in good working condition and the room was clean. Linens were well appointed and we had a small bar and refrigerator in our room. A balcony with two chairs and a small table overlooking the street below made for excellent people watching and a distant view through the trees of the ocean. My wife and I stayed at the Adobe Inn for 3 nights celebrating our anniversary. I honestly don't have a lot to say that is negative about this place, I thoroughly enjoyed our stay. When we arrived after a 9 hour drive we were greeted with friendliness and a quick check-in. I'll try to break down my review for help of anyone considering staying here. Rooms: We had a double queen room that faced the ocean. First of all, don't expect AC, that was our first mistake, but not a deal breaker. They put a fan in the closet that you can put by the door to blow in the cool air, which actually makes a difference. Our room had a decent TV, gas fireplace, mini fridge, and the bathroom was typical. I would almost say it was like a studio apartment type feeling. We had a balcony that you could see the ocean, but you're not on the coast so don't expect an amazing view. Noise: Only complaint was the walls were Uber thin! We had a family below us and they woke up promptly at 7 and it was very apparent. The walls are paper thin so doors shutting, and loud noise carries right in. Breakfast: Honestly, my favorite part about being here. I can still hear the amazing woman's voice of calling out, "Breaaaaakfaaasssst" as she knocks on your door. It's continental but more than filled me up. This stay was great. We had fruit, chocolate, and wine waiting for us when we arrived as a nice gift for our anniversary. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to any that want to stay in the area. The price is fair for the area. read more

Great location: near main shops and beach. Large clean rooms with plenty of space. Nice view of the ocean from the balcony but the balcony itself was useless: tall concrete wall and very old 1970's worn-out outdoor carpeting. Small pool but clean. Even a small sauna. The building itself on the exterior is very old and beat up but they updated the rooms. Breakfast was nice but surprised they didn't provide fresh coffee (coffee maker available in the room). Dog friendly. Good maid service. Basically you are paying for location and a nice comfortable room. read more

My wife and I lodged at the Adobe Inn primarily because of its prime location in the heart of Carmel and because of its reasonable cost. Continental breakfasts and parking were complimentary. Our room provided sufficient space but was in obvious need of reconditioning. For instance, on one wall the outline of a missing framed picture was clearly visible showing grime and indicating the need for a thorough cleaning and/or a new paint job. As another example, the entranceway to the small deck had a sliding glass door but was missing a screen door. That was significant because the hotel does not air condition its rooms. Leaving the entry open door was not an option because birds constantly perched on the deck (which was totally unusable because of the profuse droppings) and could have easily entered the room if the glass door had remained open. As a result, the only ventilation that we had was a small vent through a wall to the outside that was insufficient for cooling the room. The staff, however, was congenial and very helpful. Our breakfasts, which were delivered to our room (there is no dining room), offered a good variety of food that satisfied us. Due to the rundown condition of our room, the Adobe Inn is rated unsatisfactory. read more

We found ourselves exploring beautiful places Christmas Eve while I am working in San Francisco. Had to see the lone cypress & 17 mi drive & ended up in Carmel by the Sea. Looking for a place to spend the evening, while seeking a suitable place to refresh & imbibe. Drove past this cool older place. Gina at the desk was warm & welcoming & full of good advice for dining & exploring. This is a simple country inn, a refuge from the urban crush. Our room had a gas fireplace, a deck with a (distant) view of the ocean. This was a lovely way to enjoy a peaceful holiday. Try Napoli for a meal ! read more
