Interesting place right off 81. It's literally a diner at a truck stop. Service is a little slow but the servers were pleasant. Very casual inside. We enjoyed omelettes & I had the caesar salad. Just came back here for my first time in maybe 15 years? Only $60 something for 5 people for breakfast. We all left full. That's hard to do these days. I got the two eggs over medium and somebody was feeling generous and threw some extra eggs in there. I guess they missed the medium on them and were like well whatever just get 'em out. Thick toast and sausage patties. Mhmmm. A friend got waffles and boy did it smell delicious. Oh and then I tried some and they were. Restaurant? More of a roadside Diner/Truck stop. But don't let that stop you from dining here. Asked what the Penn-Can stood for.... Pennsylvania Canadian Highway. That's what Rt 81 was called - way back when. This establishment has been around for a very long time. I had the Fried Chicken Dinner as I was told that that was one of the most popular items. I was not disappointed. The honey batter was awesome. Portions were big, an excellent value for the price. My dad was more interested in the Breakfast menu, and plans on going back for breakfast. We will definitely be returning. See you next summer. read more

It's a restaurant attached to a gas station, which can sometimes lower expectations. And it's not trying to be the French Laundry. But you don't have to grade on a curve to rate this a great diner-style restaurant. The menu is regular American food served standard ways. Everything I or my parties ordered came out well prepared and made with decent and sometimes great (e.g. the eggs.. great eggs) ingredients. You get more than enough food in a serving. And, the prices are very reasonable: you can get a good filling meal for $6, can order almost anything for $10, and the world's largest, hungriest man could have leftovers for $15. The servers are polite, attentive, and pretty quick.the restaurant is configured mostly as booths that seat four, and those are fairly comfortable. Obviously Penn-Can can't be anything it isn't. But, it's about as good at being what it is as it could be. read more

The Pen can restaurant is a casual dining experience with great food lots of personality since 1962 most all food is prepared on grounds which makes it very exceptional with daily specials and homemade desserts. There's not too many restaurants left like this one definitely 4 1/2 stars out of five. read more

This place is the perfect definition of fast American food. My friends and I were in a lunch of what to eat late at night after arriving to the Elk Mountain area, we ordered to go and we did not make it easy for them, we added things not on the plates and made so many changes, I know restaurants hate that but D&H we're so patient and made sure they got everything correct. The ultimate in greasy spoon diner-style restaurants. Very easily accessible from the highway, and large enough inside that short of a traffic induced crowd, I don't imagine there'd ever be a wait. The chicken tender plate was good--generous portions, though the mashed potatoes weren't super great, and the food came out quickly. The taco nacho cheese soup wasn't very cheesy but still had good flavor, and the chicken club sandwich had good marks from my companion, too. A fading star on the trail between the US and Canada. Once more popular with truckers and cheap food enthusiasts, it seems to continue a very gradual slide out of relevance with all of the travel plazas screaming for attention with Starbucks, Cinnebun, and whatever else. Does it matter though? I wonder. Gas is still cheaper here than nearby, the feel is about authentic as it gets, and the food is what Waffle House used to have in the good 'ol days. I like the sleepy open 24 hours ambiance, the dusty gravel parking lot, and the staff that calls you honey, sweetie, or dear. What happened to these places? Are we really better off feeling like we never even left home at the mega travel plazas? I don't think so, but apparently I'm increasingly alone in this. read more

This is a truck-stop restaurant, plain and simple. So I'm rating it with that in mind. The food is basic but wide ranging; you can get breakfast all day and the omelette was sizable and satisfactory. The staff was extremely courteous and friendly. And they're very willing to accommodate you. For example, my daughter doesn't like pickles. At all. And the waitress, of her own volition, realized that the top of her hamburger bun had touched a pickle and immediately had a new one toasted for her. So if you happen to be driving on I-81 by exit 217, and you're looking for a place to gas up your car and stretch your legs, the D & H Penn Can restaurant, open 24 hours, is a fine option for pausing to have a great selection of classic comfort food. read more

Great little truck stop restaurant. Get gas, air in your tires, bathroom break and a home cooked meal. Open until 10 pm is a plus and right off of 81. Looks can be deceiving. After 5+ hours of driving, stopping here and ordering the chili with cornbread, (plus a side of fries) was the best decision we have made thus far. The chili is nice and hot, hearty (they don't skimp on ground beef baby!) and has an exquisite amount of flavor. Putting my family recipe to shame. The cornbread was not the best I've ever had, but they also don't skimp on the saltines provided with the chili, and I am happy. You must watch for this place while in the area it is very easy to miss. We did not want to eat at another side of the road franchise place so... We popped in here on our way back to Ontario from NYC. I was pleasantly surprised at the selections on the menu. I ordered an open faced turkey sandwich with mashed potatoes. My Hubby ordered the turkey club and my daughter ordered a BLT. All three meals were good. I must admit I really wanted to take my hubby's turkey club(real turkey not deli)... next time muhahaha. My wife and I stopped here on our way to Niagara Falls. Just happened to be a convenient stop. The food was way better than expected. My wife got a burger and I got a steak and cheese. All of is was great. Fries were crispy and not greasy. My wife got lemonade and if was really good as well. Not to mention the service. A long wait for shitty food. I wanted something simple grilled chicken with fries and a side of coleslaw. After waiting 20 something minutes The waitress realize my food still is not on my table but been sitting on the counter for the past 10 minutes. WORST SERVICE I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED IN MY LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have never experienced such terrible service from a so called "restaurant". Not much diversity in terms of the customers. First of all when i walked in I wasn't very pleased with the look and feel of the setting. It was dark and dingy. I wasn't even greeted properly. Don't get me wrong, I'm not stating that all "restaurants" are supposed to greet their customers, but these people didn't even have a smile on their faces. They all stared at me as i went to take a seat, which i found very rude just because i wasn't the same race as everyone else in there. I had to call the one of the waitresses 5 times before someone could finally take my order. And the other 4 times she would say "Oh i'll be right with you" and then rush off empty handed to other customers and stand by the bar. And she didn't even take my order, she made me wait for a good 15 minutes before deciding "oh i'm not going to take her order" and then send someone else to take my order, SO OFFENSIVE. They treated me as if i wasn't human. There was a couple who walked in a few minutes after me, and by the time my order was taken, all there food had arrived. So they were greeted properly, had their order taken within a couple of minutes of being seated down, and had there food served within 8 minutes while it took me 15 minutes just to get my order taken. How ridiculous is that. And when the waitress was taking my order she was so ill-mannered. She was being so sassy for no reason as if she had somewhere else to be when she was only taking my order. I have never been so disrespected like this by anyone in all my life. I wasn't expecting the greatest service or food, which i was deeply shocked negatively by the horrible service, but the food was better than i thought it would be. Nothing special just expected less from a grimy old place in terms of the food. i would give this place a 1.5 star rating but that can't be done here, and a 2 star rating would be way too high for the service i received. On my way to upstate new york I stopped hear at 2am for eats (can't beat driving at night to avoid Tri-State traffic). I couldn't believe how upbeat and lively the place was at 2am. A few truckers (next to a truck stop), some locals and even families were eating. medium sized l place - about 8 counter stools and 20 booths. Very friendly service and very good portions. Food was good, not great but at 2am it tasted just fine! And you can't beat the prices - very good value. I would return. read more

Wouldn't stop anywhere else. We all enjoyed our meal. Super friendly, prompt & courteous wait staff. And quick service. Generous portions. My son loved his hamburger and wanted to give the diner a star rating off the charts. Food was excellent. Chicken cheesesteak, burgers & sloppy Joe's, onion rings, French fries and seasoned waffle fries were all delicious. Immediately off the Interstate and easy parking. My fiancé took me here because his family would stop by here everytime they drive to Canada from NYC. He told me this place is very "Chinese". It's right off the freeway. When I got here, there is nothing Chinese about this place. He said... Chinese in a sense that it's cheap with big portions. The food here is very affordable and have a lot of selections. From breakfast, salad, sandwiches, pastas, steak to seafood. Maybe I had high expectations. The cole slaw that came with my grilled seafood dinner tasted like it was made a week ago and kept refrigerated. The seafood was obviously frozen. The best part of my meal was the butter toast and the mashed potato with gravy. My fiancé ordered country fried steak. The mushrooms on top we're extremely salty and the macaroni salad was so dry. Again, it tasted like it was refrigerated for weeks. If I get to pick again, I would rather go to McDonald's. read more

DISGUSTING. Stopped in for a turkey wrap to go. One waitress was tearing up lettuce with her bare hands, in between serving customers and touching their money. The waitress who served me began by heating up the wrap by pressing it on a warmer with the palms of her bare hands ... Then she wipes the prep counter with a visibly dirty rag and puts my wrap down on the wooden section she'd just wiped -- and proceeded to pick apart pre-sliced turkey with her bare hands and put it in my wrap.
