The Green Gables is a very unique and interesting place. It's been in business for 100 years, originally as a gas station and roadside eatery. It still has that kind of vibe. I've seen a billboard on I81 for this place for over 50 years but never had the opportunity to visit. I did recently and boy was it fun. It still has a roadside ambiance which I really like. There's a shuffleboard table in the bar area with lots of locals playing on it The food is good honest comfort food with an American/Italian theme. The service is super and inviting. I ate at the bar and the drinks are inexpensive as is the food. This is a great stop and I highly recommend it! read more

PHENOMENAL FIND! The place has been here almost 100 years but was originally a gas station. The bar was full of locals having a good time, while a party was going on in the other room. We had to use the restrooms to wash up before dinner, though old, the single men's and women's bathroom was impeccably clean. Our soda and water were served in mason jars with a nice slice of lemon. The menu was pretty big and there's something for everyone. We decided on mozzarella sticks with a very delicious marinara sauce. My husband order a good looking cheeseburger with curly fries, while I opted for the fried haddock dinner, which was served with both tartar and cocktail sauces, another beautiful lemon garnish, a baked potato and the most amazing carrots!!! I'm not a fan of carrots and was a little disappointed to see them on my plate BUT after tasting them, I literally gobbled them all up. Stop into this place, you won't be disappointed! read more

We went to Green Gables last Saturday for dinner. The inside is small and everyone is friendly. We sat in the room past the bar. Waitress came over and took drink orders. I had lemonade. Menu is the perfect size, just enough of what you're looking for. I decided on the grilled pork chops. Dinner comes with a visit to the salad bar which was excellent. Fresh lettuce, cucumber slices, cottage cheese, coleslaw...the list goes on. Everything I had was very good. After a second visit to the salad bar and another glass of lemonade the pork chops arrive. They come with green beans, apple sauce a slice of tomato and piece of lettuce. My Mom had the tomato slice. The pork is sliced thin and grilled perfectly. Very tasty. I'm basically full of food at this point and take the other chop home with the beans and applesauce. You won't go hungry at Green Gables. Prices are pretty good and service is spot on. If you're in the area (I know New Milford...where is that???) it's a good place to stop and eat. read more

Food is very good and never had a bad meal. Love the salad bar. They do have gluten free pasta but my wife didn't order it because they don't have a red sauce specifically designed GF. This is a great place to get a yummy homemade meal not to mention even the salad bar had homemade potato salad, macaroni salad and coleslaw. ( Family run with authentic recipes) Dedicated staff to go the extra mile extra to make homemade potato salad and it was amazing. We loved our veal parmigiana with rigatoni, shrimp and scampi over pasta, and also had cheesy garlic bread with sauce. There was a cozy bar too, but I stuck with ginger ale. So this would get five stars if it were not for two things first the negatives one no blue cheese dressing on the salad bar. I've never been to a salad bar that Did not have blue cheese dressing!!!Number two the bartender talks too much to people so that it takes a while to get your drinks!!! Now for the good. The staff is always very friendly service is average, which is good. The food is excellent and they give you a great portions so I would definitely recommend going here like I said the only two negatives is no blue cheese and slow on getting drinks even beer, which should be really fast!!!! My first time eating here. I had the Ravs with meatballs. Large portion and it came with the salad bar that had a lot to choose from. Everything was fresh and was a great meal. My friend and I stopped at GG for lunch. Not far off I-81 in New Milford, PA. He had a burger and fries and I had the hot ham on a pretzel roll both with fries and both had fountain drinks. Portions were large. Lunch was $30 total. The ham sandwich was very good. Quick refills on drinks. Service was quick and attentive. They were very accommodating of my friends service dog who quietly laid at our feet through lunch. Booth was tight and the table didn't quite fit. Yes it's dated, as noted in one review. no big deal. It's rural PA not NYC. It's disappointing that other reviews have reduced the rating based on appearance not service or quality. Good home cooked food. I did not try the salad bar. They serve alcohol if you're looking for a beer; the bar is immediately adjacent to the dining area. Ample parking and a large pavilion. Sorry I forgot to take photos. read more

I've been craving Italian American food lately and was happy that we passed this place on the way home from our road trip. It was actually a lot better than I was anticipating. The bargain for this place was pretty great. For a typical lunch entrée price around $10-12 you get free access to their salad bar which I really appreciated. The portions are also very large for lunch. I ordered the chicken parm and while the pasta was a little overdone, the sauce was good. Our waitress was also very sweet. You can tell that a lot of people who come here are regulars as the patrons were all older and on first name basis. I'd recommend if you're in the area and craving some classic Italian American dishes. read more

We've driven by this place many times when we come up to visit family and I've always wanted to stop. This time we finally did. I ordered the baked ham with a baked potato. I have to say, it was one of the best darn potatoes I've had in a long, long time! It was creamy, fluffy, and a normal size too, not giant size. The ham was a healthy portion, 3 slices, each a little thicker than the other and quite tasty. My dining partner had the scallops and home fries. She loved the potatoes, which were perfectly cooked with just a little toasting on the outside and very buttery. The scallops she said had much too much breading on them, were fried too long/crispy and the scallops themselves were on the small side and not very flavorful, so disappointing. That being said, it wouldn't keep either of us from giving it another try. I do like the atmosphere, especially the beautiful old booths on either side of the bar. If it's a busy night you might prefer a table in dining area behind the bar, as it felt a bit rowdy when the bar was busy. read more

We drove by thus restaurant on I-81 for decades and never stopped. We regret doing this. Green Gables is rather old-fashioned in its decor. Lots of dark wood and glass bricks, but it's very clean and well-maintained. To me, that speaks to a place that's valued by the community and puts out a good product. We've stopped here 3 times now and have never been close to being disappointed. I usually end up getting pasta with red sauce and sometimes an added item like meatballs, sausage, or chicken. It's always delicious. The sausage is spicy, so beware. If you want spaghetti and meatballs, order the Green Gables Special rather than spaghetti with red sauce and added meatballs. It's cheaper as the Special. Also, there's a salad bar. My husband loves the potato salad and macaroni salad they have on the salad bar. We look for excuses to head half an hour up the road to go here now. It's easily the best Italian restaurant we've been to between Scranton and Binghamton. read more

Although their food isn't the worst we've ever had out, taking the higher price for many staple menu items, we wouldn't go back. Example: They had Open Face Roast Beef with potatoes on special for $12.95. No veggie and it was no better than the same meal anywhere else. The Bluebird in Factoryville offers the same meal, including a vegetable, for $8.50 (everyday price, not a special price). Again, the food isn't horrible, as some places are, but unless you like spending quite a bit more than you have to for the same meal, there are better choices. Side note, the staff there is generally okay, but the waitress we had on the last visit was downright rude. We miss the previous now retired owners Pete & Carol. Fortunately for local & visiting diners, other long time locals, Chris & Jennifer have taken the reins, thus the locals still have a fine place to eat and have a good time. The new owners are still getting their feet wet, (not even a year) & they're doing an outstanding job. The food is great and the prices are very fair in spite of national problems. The atmosphere is better than neat and clean, it's relaxing & friendly. One of GG's best fortunes is that they have always had an awesome staff. Up front, I'll tell you that 5 stars is a nearly impossible rating to earn. If I handed them out more easily, Green Gables would be a prime candidate. It's homey, as you'd expect in a village along the Interstate. The atmosphere is casual, friendly, and conducive to a totally relaxating dining experience. Wait-staff are friendly and witty, the food came in a timely fashion as expected, and was delicious. Once again tried to eat dinner there with friends and once again frustrated. This place used to be very reliable and the owner and/or bartender made me a nice martini. (Also, best French fries around, but not last night!.) Now this place has become so annoying that I go home ranting and raving. Last night was the fourth time that I had to BEG them to make me a martini and they never get it right! The bartender FORGETS to make it or screws it up in some way. (One time, he was just wandering about inside the bar area idly chatting to people at the bar instead of making my drink.) Last night, trying to head this off at the pass, I went straight to the bar when we walked in and ordered "a vodka martini with a slice of orange" and said I am doing it now since every time I order from the table, they forget to make it. (I don't like it to arrive after the food does - don't even want it by then.) I kept watching the bartender from our table who proceeded to walk around, taking OTHER customers' orders, working the cash register and CHATTING to people. 10 or 15 minutes went by and he never started my drink. (The place was not particularly crowded). Finally, the waitress said she would get the drink and eventually did and it HAD OLIVES IN IT ALONG WITH THE SLICE OF ORANGE. How do you think a martini tastes flavored with olives and orange at the same time. I told my husband that I will NEVER GO THERE FOR DINNER AGAIN and will only suffer it with a group of women I lunch with if that is where the group wants to go. Stopped at the Green Gable for a quick bite on a trip between Rochester and NYC. I expected the typical bar fare and solid but not incredible food, oh boy was I wrong! Their pasta sauce is flavorful and the perfect thickness. Their ham is juicy and tender. I've stopped in here maybe 10 times in 5 years. The food is ok, it's not really great Italian but it's good and probably "family restaurant" fits this place better. The square bar is full during tourist season, mountains & hunting & fishing I guess. Both guests and staff have always been friendly. I'd keep the order simple and you will be fine. Portions very good, prices reasonable. I will say the best thing about the place is seen at night, when they light up the neon facade. It is right out of the 40's, and so out of place in a small town. If you are coming by at night on 81, take a 20 minute break for a beer just to admire it, nobody and I mean nobody is making signs like these any more. read more

We visited the Green Gables on a Saturday night. It had been at least six years since we had last dined here, and our recollection of it had been that the food was a tad below average and the decor was tired. Much to our surprise, we would leave very satisified with our visit in 2011. The owner, who waited on our table, explained that the severe flooding of 2006 had put the resturaunt three feet deep in water, necessitating an entire restoration and renovation, which in my opinon, was very tastefully done. The main room has a bar area in the front and a dining area in the rear, with an adjoining private dining room to the side. The refurbishment has paid dividends, and we were very impressed with how clean and updated the resturaunt appeared. The menu, traditional fare, leaning towards Italian, was good, but on this night we'd only order a pizza, which was probably a 4 out of 5. I also ventured to the salad bar, and had a very good, fresh salad which did offer a pretty solid selection of toppings. Prices were pretty reasonable The service was very good, with the owner speding much time at our table, asking my son about school and his pending trip to Elk Mountain the following day. She was very personable, and it was clear from the way she interacted with the regulars that she has created a very homey feeling with the community. As noted by the other yelper, despite the AFC Divisional playoff game being on (Pittsburgh vs. Baltimore), the bar/resturaunt was quiet and enjoyable...only complaint here was that the nearest TV was on the fritz! In all, they have come a long way in a few short years. Whereas I'd always mention "the Gables" as a dining alternative that was dismissed, I'm sure we will be back soon! read more

Came across this place while on a roadtrip with some friends. We were looking for a quick, cheap bite to eat that wouldn't take us far out of our way--what we found instead was an experience like no other. The moment you walk into Green Gables, you feel like you're a part of the community. People are playing shuffleboard, watching basketball, and just having a genuinely good time. The service was not only accommodating but also super friendly. We quickly learned that the restaurant has been run by a husband and wife for almost 40 years and it is clearly no accident that they have lasted so long. Even though it costs money on the menu, the waiter gave all of us a free trip to the salad bar after we ordered our food. The portions themselves were very generous and the food was top notch. Serving both American and Italian cuisine, I can say confidently that they have mastered both cultures as both my Fettuccine Alfredo and french fries were A1. My friends and I enjoyed this restaurant so much that we actually got a larger group of friends to join us for dinner the next night. We probably should have made reservations, though as they were not able to immediately seat 12 male college students on a very busy Saturday night. Regardless, I 100% recommend this family diner if you want more than just an excellent meal and reasonable prices--but an experience you will remember forever. read more
