A bit on the pricier side but the quality and responsiveness is worth it. You get what you pay for. They are courteous, clean and most importantly on time! It was a relatively small job (master bathroom toilet and shower) and they did that work on schedule and to our satisfaction. Would not hesitate to use them again to do any other work. read more

We do Not Recommend this Company. We were looking for a construction team that would remodel our very small and outdated bathroom. After reading reviews and interviewing we chose D&J. John Otto (Owner?), came out and assured us we would be working with professionals, the majority of which were employed by D&J, so our project would be seamless. We were expecting a Turnkey Remodel, where we let them do the job with no need for our input or monitoring after all the selections were made for the tile, fixtures and paint. That was definitely not the case. First, a few positives. Each of the many workers that came into our home were always polite. The tile setter, cabinet setter, and hot mop trades were extremely professional and did excellent work. The Tile Tradesman (A+ Tile & Stone), a subcontractor, was a craftsman. He covered everything and actually removed the bathroom door so as not to damage it, although it had already been damaged by the Demolition Team and yes, it eventually had to be replaced. Now a little bit of the experience: The drawbacks were many. Their internal Communication is terrible. No one generally knew what was going on or what was requested by us to the previous crew, with the exception of those mentioned above. One example - Time and again, we asked that our floor and walkway be protected. Finally, after asking again in writing, they put down cardboard, as they were damaging our entryway brickwork, but it was soon removed and we had to request it be placed again. There were many other examples of poor communications. As to actively monitoring the work? They will tell you they have a "Punch List" at the end of the project, so no need to update or monitor the progress. If we had waited for that? It would have been additional weeks to complete. There were quite a few issues, here are a few that We discovered and had to point out to D&J: Removing and resetting the light cans, which were placed in the incorrect spot, not per the Plan. The crew told no one of this move. So that resulted in removing the cans and cutting new holes, patching the old holes, retexturing as well as repainting. Cabinet doors that were damaged, again, No mention from the crew of this, and they had to be reordered, counter top backing not cut/ installed properly, damaged hallway wall to be repaired/ patched/ textured and painted, multiple issues with the Shower Door and Glass as well as the faucet temperature settings, etc., etc. Just those items probably would have required several more weeks to correct, plus it took at least Five visits to get the shower door installed properly, so, waiting for the Punch List? not a viable option if Time is a consideration. Here is an idea, How about have the Lead for the Day Check their work and Note what needs to be corrected for the next day and pass it on? The Attention to Detail was, for the most part, nonexistent. In short, save yourself about $10,000.00 to $12,000.00 and be your own Contractor, and ensure it's done correctly the 1st time. Good Luck. read more

I would highly recommend D&J Design Build to design and execute a project. I will use D&J Design Build for any future projects. The field superintendent was detail oriented and through. The crew was always respectful and considerate. They provided quality workmanship. I used D&J Design build for a kitchen and dining room remodel with removal of 2 walls on a 1960's house. This was huge project for my home and I was nervous going into it. The initial walk thru involved the owner, field superintendent, designer and electrician. This covered discussion of what I wanted to do, was it doable, possible upgrades to electrical and plumbing to meet code requirements. The D&J team was detail oriented, knowledgeable, addressed all of my concerns and listened to what I wanted for my project. The designer was very knowledgeable and easy to work with. She focused on my requests and provided several designs based on my wants and the shape and size of the area. After selecting the basic design, she worked with me on cabinet styles & types, counter tops, appliances, fixtures and flooring. The team provided options thru out the remodel when issues arose such as; the electrical panel was not large enough to add another circuit breaker. Options included having gas cooktop instead of an electric one or upgrade the electrical box or add a subpanel. A start date was established along with an 'estimated' time frame to complete the project, barring no major surprises. The owner sent me weekly updates via email on the status of my project and if there were any issues or material delays. My project was COMPLETED ON TIME and WITHIN MY BUDGET! I stayed in the house during the remodel and D&J was very accommodating and helped me set up a kitchenette in another area of my home. D&J took care to seal off the entrances to other rooms to minimize the dust and they cleaned the job site daily. At the end of the project, they provided a full cleaning of my new beautiful kitchen. I would definitely recommend D&J Design Build to design and execute a project. read more

Hands down, the best kitchen and bath contractors in the city. These guys are pro's -- leaders in all of the local chapters of the national and building associations. But beyond that, they're nit-pickers for quality work, complete projects on time and on-budget, and are super easy to work with. They re-did the 80 year old kitchen in my 1927 E. Sac bungalow, keeping the good parts and modernizing the rest so they fit with the rest of the house. Then I had them re-do a small bathroom, and build another master bath. I can't say enough about the owners (Darius and John) and their crews. They helped me meet my budgets, let me do some "sweat equity" to save money, and always were on-schedule. They are cabinet makers by trade, which means they want everything to be perfect, and always bent over backwards to keep me happy. Its been several years since my jobs have been complete and they are always happy to come back and tweek whatever needs to be done. We collaborated through their design/build process and transformed our modest 1950 starter home into a jewel box forever home - and we felt well-cared for through every step of the process. Designer Amanda Barnhart is a gem, and a great fit for us. Her wit and sense of humor kept the process light and easy. She deftly managed us as her clients, and helped navigate us around and through any conflicts in a multitude of decisions. Beyond what we wanted, Amanda helped us get what we needed. Several things we asked for she would say, "we can do that, but here's why we usually don't and what I would suggest instead..." Invariably Amanda's reasoning and suggestions gave us results that surpassed our expectations. Only after moving out and staying elsewhere did I truly appreciate Amanda's skill as a designer: the airBnB we rented looked great in photos, yet would have functioned SO much better had they used Amanda's design skills. Moving back home gave us further appreciation for Amanda - living in her plan makes us feel like our house takes care for us more than we do of it! Amanda's lighting plan completely transformed how the house feels - it is truly light and bright, open and inviting. Amanda's plan improved our home's function dramatically. Project Manager Tony Lunsford took excellent care of us as he guided the project to completion. Tony's warm courtesy and competence make him a joy to work with. Any and all concerns were handled promptly with grace and professionalism. One of my favorite things in our home is the custom catbox cubby he designed and created for us. We've heard others' nightmare contractor stories, and our experience was the opposite. We trust and recommend D&J whole-heartedly. read more

D&J Kitchens and Baths were an amazing pleasure to work with! From the first meeting with Darius the owner and Nicole the designer, we knew we wanted to have them do our kitchen and bathroom remodel. The remodel involved knocking down walls and other extensive work. Their bid was not the cheapest, but I would not hesitate to use them again - it was worth it. Both Darius and Nicole spent countless hours with us, working out the details of the design, before we even paid them a dime. Once work started, we bonded with the work crew (mostly D&J employees) so much that, when the project was completed, we were bereft that these guys wouldn't be coming to our house every day anymore. The project took approximately 4 months. D&J met all their deadlines and budget and kept us informed along the way every week. We made two change orders which were handled professionally by Erin. Erin also handled all of the complex purchasing and provided expert advice on many aspects of the project. All of the employees were professional and went out of their way to be helpful with explanations and detail work. Near the end of the project, one error that could have been disastrous was handed with such dexterity that I hesitate to mention it. I do, because as the discussion about fixing the error began, Darius told us to make the right decision for ourselves, and that D&J was responsible for any additional cost that would be required. Within minutes, a solution was decided upon and set in motion. That integrity is what we paid for with a slightly higher cost than the other four companies we originally considered. read more

All their employees are nice and considerate when working in our home. They never forget to lock up the house. When I asked a question, they text or email me back promptly. Their office staff and owner answered all questions to our satisfactory. They listened to our needs/wants and make it happen to the best they can within guidelines and space availability, and if they can't, they make good suggestions/recommendations. We remodeled a bathroom and built an extra 1/2 bath. We like the results of both bathrooms, we like how everything was written down to the smallest detail from the beginning and the total price is given to us, so no surprises during the process or at the end. Since details already written down from the beginning, they didn't have to bother us to ask questions when they are working at the house. They took care of everything from getting permits, meeting city contractors at the house... of course everything is included into the price. Their prices are on the higher end, but it is worth it for us with their professionalism and how everything is taken care from beginning to end. So everything was good except 2 items. One, is delayed, 2 weeks delayed to finish as promised. Their time frame is already longer than other contractors that we interviewed. One reason for the delay, even though the project turned out to be harder than they thought, which was fine. Not every day someone was there working, and even when someone was there, they didn't work full days. If everyday someone was there working full time, my project could have been done much sooner, at least on time. Second, the floor is not done as well as the flooring company that we used for our floor project. Because we use the same floor materials, and because they had to take out some flooring and replacing the same flooring in the hallway, the workmanship is not done as well. So if time is not a big factor, or somehow negotiate the finish time has to be on time or else deduction on price, if you need to use the space. I was stressed out because we needed the bathrooms for guests, and so I thought 2 weeks after their promised finished date was plenty of time to have guests come stay. So project finished on the Friday afternoon, our guests came Saturday, People are very nice from the owner, the receptionist, and the employees come out to the house. Lastly, they did a good job cleaning up afterwards too ( repaint walls, vacuum ) the areas that they dirty due to their work. read more

From the prompt return of my first call requesting an estimate, to being on time for the first appointment, to the low pressure design center experience, to the very detailed and thorough estimate, Darius and his entire crew at D and J were a pleasure to work with (and his painting subcontractor too!). They did high quality work and they did it on time and on budget. We had a fairly specific vision for our remodel and they not only listened to us but also made some very good suggestions that improved the outcome beyond our expectations. The other contractors that I contacted didn't seem to listen as well as Darius did and they didn't ask as many good questions as Darius did in an attempt to really understand what we wanted. Darius puts a lot of effort into the design and estimate phase in order to minimize the potential for misunderstandings about what I you are getting, what it will cost, and how long it will take to complete. After working with them I would hire them again and recommend them to anyone that values quality and reliability. D and J was not the lowest estimate we received and I don't regret picking them over the less expensive bids from other contractors due to the level of detail and thoroughness of Darius' estimate (i.e. no hidden costs) and reputation (i.e. high quality work and customer satisfaction). read more

We saw them at the home show a couple of years ago and we made an appointment for an estimate. D&J cancelled the day before the appointment. When we asked about a reschedule, we were told the estimator would need to do it. We are still waiting for a callback. I can't review the quality of their work as I haven't contracted with them. But I'm disappointed that they never thought enough of us to call back. We thought they might be the ones, but I'm disappointed they never called us back. They tell you how great they are, that they are NARI members. They do give interesting presentations at the various home shows in the area, but when you have an actual job, they didn't deliver...at least not for us. I have no idea why they cancelled and never called us back like we thought they were going to do. D&J are not the only NARI members who have cancelled and not called back. I wish NARI kept some sort of statistics where customers could give them some feedback because there's nothing magic about being NARI members-I can give at least three examples of NARI members not following through. read more

Where to begin?! D&J came to the house when we were in escrow to buy, to give us an estimate. I told them what I wanted, walls removed, an island put in, granite counters, solid maple cabinets. They promised to finish the house in 2 months & promised they wouldn't work on another house until it was done. They did a cursory computer rendition of our agreed upon, estimated kitchen remodel (the kind you get for Free at Home Depot & Ikea). Since it was a foreclosure with multiple owners, the escrow took longer than usual. D&J threatened to charge $1000 for the computer print out design of the kitchen if we didn't go thru with the remodel. This shocked us! They never said there was a charge for the print out, they were impatient to start the job. But, we wanted to wait until escrow closed for good before starting the remodel (Normal!). We proceeded when it did. We said we wanted the exact granite counters as our friends Susan & Roy, whose house they did. But, instead of toothpick epoxy & bull-nosing, we got 1/4" SANDED grout (for a kitchen to do bread & pie doughs? Sheer Inanity!) & NO bull-nosed edges! Plus, the tiles were so uneven, you couldn't slide a wine glass across it without it catching & chipping. They insisted that 'the granite tiles can be off the height of a dime!' Not what we agreed upon. They couldn't find the guy who did Susan & Roy's house & this new guy didn't know how to bull-nose. Not acceptable! Since we didn't put it in writing, he said we couldn't change it. (What good is their word then?) The edge of the counter immediately got huge chips when a broom was accidentally dropped against it cleaning (1 week after we moved in). Also, we changed our choice for carpet from off white to beige (before the baseboards were painted). They said 'no way we're on a schedule!" & put in the the white carpet BEFORE the baseboards were painted. So, the carpet (a modified shag) strands stuck to the wet, freshly painted baseboards (PROOF they did it out of order & out of spite, or else, they don't KNOW the right order!). They didn't put down a hall mat to protect the rug, so there was a trampled, dirty path (we had to SHAMPOO the rug BEFORE moving in!). They didn't put in wall sconce lights in the bedroom because they said 'you didn't chose a design fast enough'. The wall was closed up & we got NO sconces! I was given NO warning that 'tomorrow we have to know your decision on sconces'. They never failed to charge me HUNDREDS of $$$ in '$25 'change order fees' if I changed anything. For instance, I NEVER said I wanted (in writing or verbally) TWO sinks in my guest bathroom (only 1 person pees at a time in there), but they charged a change order penalty PLUS a re-stocking fee. I had to take off work a few houses EVERY DAY because there was ALWAYS some awful new thing that was going wrong. They had NO plans for putting in a shampoo shelf in shower (which is Not normal), just plain white tiles (no contracting colors or tiles, Not normal). So they charged me $25 change order fee to ask them to put in a stripe of granite that was left over from kitchen & $25 for a shampoo shelf in shower. They put in a glass shower door on the top on the BATHTUB, which is DOUBLE the height it should be, making it DANGEROUSLY WOBBLY to open/close & it gets STUCK all the time. They insisted that I install a phone line before they started work to keep their cell phone charges to a min. When we moved in, we got a phone bill with $30 of long distance sex hotline calls during 6am-7am over 3 weeks. This PROVED that they gave our key to sub-contractors while they worked on other houses. They offered to pay the piddly $30, that wasn't the problem. The issue was: they did Not work exclusively on our house, they did NOT oversee the workers at all times, they did NOT keep control or possession of the key AS PROMISED. The new oven didn't work when we moved into our house for Thanksgiving (disappointing & inconvenient with guests). The back burner of the stove top never worked, we've had to replace it THREE times now, with a new contractor until it worked!!! The low flow toilets back up ALL the time. The carpet had to be replaced, the painting in the hall re-done. They banged the walls with the carpet! The price also DOUBLED from the initial estimate. This was a nightmare from beginning to end & it continues to be, as we replace flooring, painting, appliances & deal with the chipped granite counters, debating on replacing those & the 'solid' (thin, flimsy) maple cupboards whose varnish has worn off into dust (but the cost would be astronomical). read more
