My friends and I came here for brunch and we had a blast. Michelle was our server and she was so nice. She explained their menu items to us thoroughly and checked on us often. She made sure we were well-taken care of. Our meals took about 20 minutes to come out after our orders were placed, but when I tell you we could tell our food was homemade and made to order. We could tell. Everything tasted amazing. I had some sweet tea that tasted so good. I was trying to save it to drink with my meal, but it was too good to save. I ordered some peach cobbler to go and enjoyed that at home. This space is huge. They have other events here and there is a large bar on one side with tables and televisions. The other side is where the kitchen and register are located. They have seating there too. I love this restaurant and how they are centrally located in their community. Quiet atmosphere on a cold Tuesday morning here in Atlanta. I was lucky enough to get a perfect parking spot close to the door. The server was an elder, and we loved her. We were a party of three (3). The funny thing is, we essentially ordered the same thing with very minor differences. We each had the salmon croquettes, grits, eggs, biscuit/toast. I didn't order any eggs and I also had a side of blueberry pancakes and home fries. The food was fresh, hot and really good. Prior to leaving, we met the chef and I believe he's the owner. Sometimes you just get lucky. We like to eat local, especially in places where we're not a local. On our way back from Charleston she googled a place not far off I 20 on the west side of Atlanta. We made our way to the location and parked a couple hundred yards away. Walking back, we passed another restaurant and I stopped to look at the menu. A gentleman was sitting outside And said "you can go in either door. It's the same place." I asked if it was any good and he replied "excellent"! I asked him if it was his restaurant, with a smile, and he said yes, with a smile back! He was right! The service was incredible, the music was fantastic. (Frank Sinatra and Sade), and the food was scrumptious! By the end of the meal, we had great conversations with the whole family! Mr. and Mrs. D, their son, the their sister, and one or two others! I don't eat macaroni and cheese, but this was just like my mommas and I ate every bit of it! The greens and pot liquor were on time! I didn't get many photos because I was definitely having fun and eating good but I enjoyed learning about the cafe's history and mission. I love that it's family owned and that they have evolved over the years due to the communities support. They offer a event hall and cafe space with Atlanta themed dishes that they created over the years. My husband and I came for breakfast and were the first customers that morning. We were greeted warmly by the chef and took a seat. The place looks nice and cozy. I ordered fish and grits. They have haddock and Catfish. I picked the Catfish and it was perfectly cooked, so were the grits. I chose a biscuit to go with it. The biscuit was flavorful and soft. Everything tasted amazing, no salt or anything needed. My husband got the magnolia French toast, chicken sausage and a side of turkey bacon. He let me taste the French toast as and it was so flavorful, no syrup was even needed. While we were there, they had an event in their other space, and a men's fellowship meeting. Miss D's spot is legit. The food is great. There's ample seating and the owner is such a sweetheart. My homegirl and I stumbled across this place after deciding not to wait 2+ hours in the Slutty Vegan line. As we were about to head to our cars, we saw this place. The signage doesn't pop out at you on the first time so we literally almost passed this place by. They serve southern food but they have vegan options as well which my friend is. I ordered the salmon croquettes which I can never pass up and my friend got the vegan waffle, scramble and sausage. By the way, the make the sausage in house and it's good. The salmon croquettes were a good hefty size esp for the price. Y'all know how Atlanta can be sometimes! Charging folks $18 for two small patties. And the entree is served with grits, eggs (I got potatoes instead) and a biscuit. All for $13. Parking can be tricky though. Ate here 3 weeks ago and it was fantastic! Food: omgggg best veggie burger I've ever had. There were fresh, not frozen patties with broccoli and carrots in the filling. The patty was not stiff which means it was really fresh. The bun itself could've been served on its own. My choice of side was the kale and collard (vegan) mix which was seasoned to perfection. I first stumbled on this place while listening to Jazz station 91.9 WCLK (love that station but I digress) where they had an advertisement. The ad caught my attention because I had driven by place many times and noticed the name on the door. I made it my business to research the spot online and what I found made me want to check them out. It wasn't until we went to another spot a couple doors down next to the Slutty Vegan called Augie's Cafe that made it a necessity for us to check out D Cafe. Now I will not deny that the food at Augie's is delicious as well, but the place is about the size of my carport with very limited seating and a slow waitstaff. They took so long to serve us at Augie's that we walked out. It was then that I remembered D Cafe and thus began my food relationship with them. Full transparency, I will say that while very friendly with down home charm, they are also slow with service but in their defense, it is family-run and the server not only serves but she also runs the cash register so take your patience with you when you go. Once you taste their food, you will be glad that you were patient as the food is made from scratch and quality takes time (and it is quality food). If you want quick or fast food, then there are a number of other options from which to choose but this NOT the place for you. They have other menu selections, but I always get the salmon croquettes, cheese scrambled eggs, grits, toast and a mimosa (or 2 or 3) and it is always on point! Nestled in the West End, the ambiance is VERY chill, unpretentious, and laidback and makes a GREAT place to go after church or after a night of hard partying and you are in need of a hearty meal to knock off a hangover. My family and I came for the Mothers Day brunch/lunch special from 11 am - 4 pm. There was a pre selected menu and payment was requested upon reservation. It was $40 per person. I arrived at 12:15 pm and we were seated right away. The dining space was small and most parties arrived around the same time. There were no more than 50 people there and everyone's order was taken around the same time. There was a live band to keep the patrons entertained while we waited 2 plus hours for food we never ate. We had the option to choose from brunch (3 items) or build a dinner entree with the items listed. The brunch did not come with dessert yet it was the same price as dinner option. I ordered the steak and salmon, mac and cheese, collard greens and peach cobbler. All lunch meals were supposed to come with a salad. Meals also came with choice of lemonade, tea, or mimosa. No champagne was detected in the mimosa. At most restaurants, bring your salad out first... we never got the salad. My drink was never refilled. When the entree eventually came out at 2:48 pm it was cold and looked undercooked. The salmon was rock hard and covered in a cold cream sauce. The macaroni and cheese was not good (stouffer's tastes better). The collards was too salty. I didn't get my salad or peach cobbler. No one in my party liked their food. My cousin never even got her food. The waiter told her they had ran out of food by that point. Mind you she ordered the same time everyone else in our party did. As I observed other patrons, they did not seem as pleased with their experience either. I noticed everyone at a nearby table ordered chicken and waffles. They did get their food around 2 pm after waiting about 2 hours. Judging by their faces they were not pleased. I asked the woman next to me if she liked her food and she quickly replied "it's horrible." At this point many people were requesting to speak to the manager. I too was in line ready to ask for a refund. We asked the owner what was the hold up on the food. She told us she was short staffed. I totally understand being short staffed. What I didn't understand why that wasn't communicated sooner. They should have known how many people were coming because everyone there was required to prepay. Lack of preparation was obvious. My experience was definitely unforgettable. I wish the owner showed more empathy and was more communicative. There were more excuses than understanding. She had it seem as it was no big deal when my Mother's Day meal for my mother was a complete disappointment. The owner said we would receive a refund within 24hrs as we paid via PayPal. My family and I went for Mother's Day! I must say it was a quaint spot. A very intimate setting. They were very friendly and hospitable. The live music was pleasant. I really enjoyed myself. The food was amazing! I've had southern cooking here in Atlanta and when I tell you, it was all home made. The mashed potatoes were made from scratch and the brisket was tender and juicy. The shrimp and grits was the right portion. Collars and Mac and Cheese reminded me of my moms. Everything was seasoned well not salty. Now the one thing I would recommend is that they explain the dining experience. They do a family sharing style, I felt uncomfortable because a couple sat down and they had different food. I didn't know that the whole table was sharing all the dishes on the table. I ended up making my plate. Chicken and waffles were 5 chicken wings and 4 waffle quarters ($16). Wings were okay and the waffles weren't anything special. Looked dull. My wife got the shrimp and grits ($18). Not many shrimp over a large bowl of grits. I will say though that the sauce was very good. Good seasoning and spices. Service was slow as there was no one to greet us for about 5 minutes or so. D Cafe has become one of my favorite neighborhood spots to visit. When I can, I sit near the window, order breakfast, and read a book. No one ever urges me to rush. Mrs. D and others are attentive to all their customers and are a breath of fresh air. One of the things I love about Mrs. D is that she is open to suggestions and feedback....she even asks for it! So far, my favorites are the homemade biscuits and the shrimp and grits! I had the homemade cinnamon rolls, too. Huge! Too big for me, but would be a delight to someone with a sweet tooth. I haven't gone for lunch, but have heard great things about the lunch menu, too. Will update my review when I try the lunch options. Happy I live w/in walking distance! This restaurant is off to a great start. The local spot best known for brunch (Closed Sunday--that's a problem) feels like home and the food has a touch of a small kitchen to it. Biscuits and pancake batter made in the back. Both are more than acceptable--especially the pancake. The also make homemade cinnamon rolls that are tops when taken home and popped in the microwave for 30 seconds after a late night (I'm just saying). I also enjoyed the grits and eggs. Again, acceptable and leaning on the side of good...perhaps. On a second trip, I trip the shrimp and grits and I strongly believe the base is cream of chicken soup... like there were bits of canned chicken inside. Let's do better together on this one. The location has a local charm. Inside could use a little imagination and attitude. It needs to decide what the culture will be. Could also be a cute dinner spot. As a native Atlien I love D Cafe. She has built a menu that reminds of the real Atlanta. From salmon croquettes to pork chop sandwhiches, D Cafe creates a friendly atmosphere that mixes the old with the new. The wait stuff are young and vibrant and the cook staff are beautifully seasoned Atlanta natives who know how to welcome you to the real Atlanta. My husband and I walked up to D's for brunch on a Saturday morning. We had the Westend and biscuits and gravy with bacon and a side of grits. The bacon and gravy were delicious! The grits were tasty. The biscuit was pretty good, but a little heavier than I like. Service was quick and welcoming and they filled my husband's travel coffee mug right away.
