Whenever I'm staying at a hotel on Virginia Ave, this place is a MUST. I have eaten here as much as I possibly could/can over the past 4 years. First the food was actually tasty. Very overpriced but tasted good. I had the pot stickers as an appetizer and they were decent. But for $7 it feels extremely cheap to have veggie potstickers (and not state that explicitly on the menu). Most places charge $7 for pork or shrimp potstickers. Then for my entree I had the panang curry with fish. My first issue with this is for an additional charge of $8 or $9 DEEP frying a fillet and plopping it on top feels extremely cheap. If it was $4 I'd expect that for almost $10 I'd think pan frying it at least like the salmon they have on the menu would be the default or at least informed to the customer. The extremely high price for the pre prepared curry with veggies with a protein not even mixed in but on top and veggie dumplings is one reason for a star deduction. The service this past time I went was absolutely abysmal. When I came in the server didn't seem to want me to sit at a table (I was a party of 1) so she nudged me to the bar which was alright but when I sat at the bar the bartender rolled his eyes and looked annoyed that I was sitting there. Then he eventually came over didn't greet me and just put menus in front of me. Then when I was ready to order he came over still without saying a word took my order and afterwards asked "do you water or anything to drink" (he hadn't given me any water when I sat down). I answered yes and a Thai iced tea please. My food came out quickly and he brought my Thai iced tea. But never got any water. Then after trying to get his attention for 10 minutes I eventually got him to request my check and he brought it once again with not a word spoken. The ambience has chill vibe with a comfortable and relaxing place to hang with your friends, loved ones or meeting a new friend. The old brick decor makes it feel historical. 4 Stars Server - Tu. A delightful young man with a wonderful smile who answered our questions on the different dishes. He was professional and pleasant. 3 Stars to 4 Stars: Though the food options were limited to the large Thai cuisine, the cooks did a decent job on the items we ordered. All the plates had plentiful amount of food. 3 Stars: Tofu Pad Zu - spicy Hot: the wide rice noodles soaked up the sweeten soy sauce with a hint of tamarin. However, the fresh vegetables and tofu did not. It tasted bland.It could be better with a slice of lime for acidity or add and or have additional seasoning. With that said, the vegetables were fresh, steamed hot, and crunchy. The tofu was slightly firm. 3.75 Stars Chicken Pad Thai - spicy Hot. Plentiful amount of the thin rice noodles, which was covered in the Pad Thai sauce. The chicken was chewy and was thinly sliced. Some of the chicken was tender, while others were dry. Hit and miss. The Pad Thai sauce was slightly missing something. The tamarind paste brought the sourness. However I think it was the lack of fish sauce and sugar. With that said, the dish was still good. Just not great for our personal taste. 4 Stars Squid Garlic Stir Fry - spicy Mild The squid were tender, chewy and was a good choice to hold the garlic sauce. Cooking squid is a delicate matter. 1 minute more on the cooking can make the texture of the squid chewy and rubbery. The fresh veggies were al dente and the jasmine rice was cooked perfectly. However, we thought the sauce was lacking in the garlic flavor. We thought it would be more garlicky. Even though there are Pros and Cons on the dishes, each plate was "cleaned" off. Only thing that wasn't eaten was the lime rind. Hahaha. Special Note: Event Manager - Amanda Amanda brought us up to tour The Loft and explained how they work their events. After listening to her, it definitely made us want to use this venue for a future event. She was delightful to talk to and was so personable. It was hard to find parking though there was a sign that said there was public parking not too far away but it was dark and I wasn't going to walk by myself in this area. I ended up doing a to-go order because the only spot I found was in the 15 min pick-up parking area. It took exactly 15 mins for them to provide my order which was quick and when I got home it was hot. The chicken pad kee mao was excellent. The hot level was great and definitely spicy. It was a lot of food. I was only able to get through half of it and saved the rest for lunch the next day. The noodles were cooked perfectly and the peppers still had just enough crunch. The potstickers with the sauce were perfect. Some of the best potstickers I've ever had. You have to try this place. Their servers are also so sweet and attentive. But unfortunately their Thai food was not authentic or tasty. I ordered pad Thai and pad kee mao. The pad Thai was mediocre and just overwhelmed with a sweet flavor but the tofu was cooked well. The pad see ew was my least favorite - the noodles were hard and the sauce was once again sweet while this dish is mostly savory. Fast forward a few years since I was the first to review this spot and they are going strong, with a great bar and a great food game. The service here is always good! The atmosphere is quite honestly one of the best in town! I most often have the Panang Curry with ground chicken as my meat. It is really good! The other dishes don't miss either. I would say that their Pad Thai is one of the best in all of Atlanta. Their cheesy rolls are so good! They make an array of fancy cocktails that are well made! This place can be a little bit pricey but I believe it's worth the expense if you can afford it. The rices are good, the curries are good, and really you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. I would come here more often if I could. I love seeing a good restaurant like this take flight in Hapeville and I hope we can get a few more like it. Note: Parking can be a bit difficult sometimes when it gets busy so just be aware you may have to park down the street occasionally! Come on down for a visit if you are craving Thai! My friend and I dined at Paper Plane this past week, and it was easily one of the strangest dining experiences I've had. It started with a lychee martini that arrived pinkish-orange--already a red flag. One sip confirmed it tasted like a cosmopolitan with a lychee dropped in. It neither tasted good nor resembled a lychee martini in any recognizable way. I order this cocktail often, and this missed the mark entirely. When I asked to switch to a glass of Prosecco, the server (who was very sweet) had to get the manager. He explained their version is made with cranberry juice. We shared that if a drink is made so differently from what most diners expect, that should be communicated upfront. He refused to fully comp the drink--despite only a sip being taken--and offered only half off. Adding to the frustration, this cocktail isn't even listed on the menu so there's no way to know how theirs is made. The interaction took an uncomfortable turn when he attempted to mansplain something about "ethnic" food, which was both unnecessary and off-putting. Regardless of cuisine, this is simply not how a lychee martini is made and if not included on the menu it should be clearly communicated that it is made differently here. We did offer constructive feedback that better communication around drink preparation would help set expectations in the future. As for the food, we ordered the spring rolls to start and two orders of crab fried rice with added shrimp. The food was decent, nothing exceptional but enjoyable enough. There is parking available in and around the restaurant. Overall, the experience was overshadowed by poor communication and an uncomfortable interaction with management. While the food was fine and the service from our server was kind, the handling of the situation left a lot to be desired. I like this place. Arrive around 2pm with my guest (Mom) for lunch. Considered to be a neighborhood fav. Tony was our server. She was direct but friendly and essentially warmed up to us more overtime. Especially AFTER my Mom dropped the infamous crab fried rice ALL over the floor...soooo sorry Tony. She handled that well. The food was everything, clean. Clean ingredients, hot, fresh. We had the following all requested to arrive at the same time: 1. "Egg" rolls - cabbage filled only but a beautiful and delicate pastry shell. Probably one of the most unique and versatile apps, I've had Asian style in a minute. 2. Crab Fried rice - honestly the star. Fresh and real pieces of crab with peas and carrots chunks similar to that of a traditional fried rice. This was my Moms' dish and as a seafood cook and connoisseur she appreciated the fresh cucumber garnish and the spice to accompany (go hot here). 3. Pad Thai (shrimp added) - I had the pad Thai and it was delicious. The shrimp plump fresh abundant, the sauce not too sweet and the heat, again spicy but not too much. The only thing I would advise here is that the pad Thai is swimming in a bit of sauce and scrambled egg. IF you took this to go, and for those folks who love pad thai like me would enjoy the extra sauce the next day ensuring the dish is not dry. Me on the other hand would have preferred a less liquid approach. But overall, I would still order again will moderate accommodations to the egg thingy and maybe even the sauce. 3. The side of veggies is at best a mixed blend of random veggies that felt maybe mid and maybe even a blend of microwaved options. I genuinely loved this place. It was my lunch spot for the past year or so. I got one dish every time, the Pad Zu. Loved it down except, prepared normally, it's very dry. You can barely taste the sauce and flavor which is so good. You just want more of it. So I typically ask for extra sauce. This was no problem for 3-4 visits, no extra charge. The "extra sauce" is what should be included in a noodle dish in my opinion. Extra could be a little more - however I was happy. A couple of weeks ago, I place my order as normal and was told that extra sauce was a $5.00 up charge. Let's put this in context. The lunch special is only $11 without a protein. Besides that being astronomical in comparison it actually makes no sense. I could buy an entire bottle of sauce for less than $5. Let alone the cost to make it from scratch. A few tablespoons of sauce that should be on the dish anyway is $5? I get inflation but this is taking advantage of the consumer. I spoke with management who gave me a one time courtesy but he confirmed this was the decision of the owners. An attempt to be fair, I emailed the restaurant with my grievance before writing this review. No response to date. So unfortunately, my run with this place has ended unless that charge changes. I run a business as well but taking advantage of your customers this way is unethical in my opinion and I won't spend my money there. Also, to not respond to a customer complaint is quite telling. We asked for additional peanut sauce which added a nice bit of flavor and a little heat. Try it. The service was excellent. The staff was polite, attentive and open to offer suggestions. We started with the spring rolls for appetizers. It was decent (just cabbage, no other veggies). For drinks we ordered a margarita and hibiscus French 75 - both tastes good and fresh. Such a great spot in Hapeville for lunch or dinner. I've visited a few times and each visit has been wonderful. It's not truly "hidden", but it's definitely a gem! There is not only indoor seating but a number of covered tables outside in a super cute courtyard that includes a little turf area with cornhole and ample space for groups and friends. Inside is beautifully decorated and the perfect vibes for a drink for one, or a dinner date for two. The hostess stand could be missed if you enter from the cornhole area, but it's there! The menu is diverse without being overwhelming and I love that. Full of delicious Thai favorites, there's really something for everyone. I love that they have a sort of DIY portion of the menu where you can choose from curry, stir fry or fried rice with your choice of protein and heat if you can't choose from their specialty options. My favorite is the chicken stir fry and I like it hot! I appreciate that it's actually *hot* and not wimpy like some places try to pass off as hot lol. On my last visit I asked for extra spice and sriracha on the side but I absolutely didn't need it because the heat definitely kicks in after you take a spoonful. It's always delicious and the portions are always plentiful, I get a takeout box on each visit. The drink menu is also amazing. Full of different wines, beers and craft cocktails, the bar really takes the experience to the next level. If you're looking for non-alcoholic drinks, the Thai tea is also delicious. I waited in the lobby b/c I ordered to-go, but made a note to self to sit outside the next time I return. The reason for the four stars is that I didn't appreciate the reply I received from the young guy who took my order at the front counter. I misunderstood the bill and asked for clarity on the price. I rarely eat meat so when I ordered the basil stir fry without a protein, I thought the entree would simply be $14, plus tax. When the bill was more than expected, of course I asked. Upon asking, it was explained that the entrees are ordered in three parts. Select the dish, then select the protein, then the level of spice. Fair enough. But, I guess I didn't look at the protein options since I knew I wasn't adding one. My mistake b/c apparently, you are charged a double helping of veggies if you don't order a protein. If that's how they do things, that's fine, but the guy who placed my ordered proceeded to say something to the affect of, "you select the entree, the protein and then you have to add the taxes." The last part was patronizing and insulting AF. Of course taxes, sweetie. I just wanted to know why the bill wasn't $14 plus tax. I overlooked the extra cost associated with sticking with just the veggies. That's all that needed to be pointed out. I informed him that I am aware of "taxes" and that was not what I was inquiring about, but his response rubbed me the wrong way. I have not had a bad experience at Paper Plane. I will say over the years, the portion sizes have decreased, but I have noticed that in several establishments. Thankfully, the quality of the food has not diminished and that is what is most important (at least to me). My last visit was with a couple of friends. We each tried something different along with cocktails. There was even a band or someone singing the night we were there which made the night even better.
