A large group of us decided to head in for dinner one Friday night. We called to make a reservation, which they were able to accommodate with such late notice. Our sever was great, ensuring our drinks were always filled and orders were placed within a timely manner. I decided to go with the Mulita without cheese and added barbacoa. Unfortunately, it wasn't anything to brag about. The rest of table ordered items ranging from enchiladas, to rolled tacos, with a few appetizers and while they were better than mine still not too impressed. This place never disappoints!!! Food is amazing. I had the Carne en su jugo with side of flour tortillas. Just absolutely delicious. The place got busy as I walked in just before lunch time. With a few large tables walking in. The service was wonderful, thanks to Oscar I believe. The food just tasted amazing. My one stop every time I come to visit here. Never disappoints. Overall the food was very good and I would come back when in the area. What would I do different? Well I would eat outside or carry out, as the volume in this place is off the chart. We went because they were open late. We are out of towners and got hungry for something not fast food style. Yelp told us they were open, and we headed over. I shared a pretty big plate of nachos and tried 4 different hot sauce. We had a great seat inside as it was pretty windy that evening. And our table was perfect. The place smelled so good. Whatever you do, DON'T ever order the "three mini empanadas" For $15, I got three empty shells.. There was no manager on duty, so I had to put up with this ridiculous "appetizer" Yes, three fried shells with the ONLY ingredient being, air. The burrito was stuffed full of meat, rice, fries, and more. And it was under $10 (well including tax and tip it was around $12) which was a great deal. The menu has a wide range of mexican foods and the service was great HOWEVER I do have to say, being this close to the border and with so many other options this definitely isn't the best one. My wife and I were craving tacos and encountering a place with a four and a half star rating on YELP, a place so close to Mexican border seemed like a no brainer. I thought about stamping a dead one star on my review but in all fairness because of the great beer selection and the Amazing guacamole and chips I could not do that. I ordered two carne asada, two Al Pastor and one tripa taco. I was hungry and I felt hunger was overriding my logic! My wife ordered the carne en su jugo and an order of guacamole and chips. My beer along with the guacamole and chips arrived and we had hit a standup double so it wasn't difficult to believe that the entrees would bring us all to home plate. I hate to admit that in the past I've been over zealous because of great starts and deja vu showed up again in full fan fair! (Disclaimer: there is delicious fat that makes everything taste better and then there's greasy fat that makes everything taste worse) I started off with the carne asada taco adding the required condiments hoping to slip into an unforgettable experience. Just like that I was tagged out with the salty, greasy, flat taste which I tried to resuscitate my taco with extra salsa, onions and prayed for the best but it was dead! I moved on to the Al Pastor tacos and the stream of bad fat brought back memories of the bad carne asada taco. Salty, full of greasy fat! It was at this point that I put all my hopes and dreams on the good old reliable Tripas taco. I took an enthusiastic bite and encountered what felt like Mexican gummy bears. Again bad salty grease prevented me from moving beyond the first bite. I contemplated calling Chef Gordon Ramsey for a second opinion but deep inside I knew the awful sad truth. I needed to forgive them for the awful mess acknowledging that they did not know what they were doing. In my state of forgiveness I decided to try another dish: Chile Relleno Plate. I felt that I had just made the unforgivable sin by ordering a Chile Relleno plate in a "taco shop". I prayed hard for the sacrificial dish and it arrived looking bloody good. I cut, I tasted and I died of a lethal heartbreak! All I tasted was canned tomato sauce and pure letdown! You would think that a taco place so close to the border would have evolved into producing taco excellence but sadly D'Poly is just D'Awful! The only fix for this place would be to remove the word "taco" from the title and just keep the beer or kidnap a real taco maker from across the border. Not sure if either one of these things will happen anytime soon from the 4.5 stars this place has. My suggestion is to either run for the border to find edible tacos or run to Taco Bell and save some money. read more
