Bacon on the carbonara was nice and crunchy with thick yoke. Dinner with Romans who approved. Also had a favorite fried zucchini flowers. What a special place. We enjoyed it so much, we went twice during our stay (it was directly across the piazza from our room!). It's built on top of the Theater of Pompey, and the history and architecture is amazing. The first night we ate in the cave room which was fantastic. We weren't starving so we shared stuffed, fried squash blossoms and pasta Carbonara. The blossoms were a little too anchovy for us but they were well prepared. The Carbonara was excellent, but so rich! Pasta was perfectly cooked. The next time we went we were looking for rabbit, which they had! This time we ate outside and shared the mussels and clams and rabbit. Mussels and clams were delicious with a great sauce for bread dipping. The rabbit was outstanding. Tender and flavorful. We were seated downstairs in this incredible section of the restaurant that's built right into ancient ruins--how often can you say you've had dinner surrounded by literal history? The vibe down there was cozy but so cool at the same time. The food? Absolutely amazing. My husband went for the pasta with oxtails, and it was rich, hearty, and full of flavor--basically comfort food, Roman-style. I had the white truffle pasta, and wow...it was divine. We arrive today after a six month reservation wait. We were anticipating it very much so. We started out good with appetizers and drinks immediately. Then we noticed after 40 minutes of waiting the table that came after us got their food before us. The lady told us three minutes more max and then took another 15 more minutes and took over an hour to get our food . We are in Rome for only two days and time is precious to us. We wasted an additional 1 hour that could have been spent shopping around. Instead we were forced to go home due to it being so late and the kids got tired The kids filled up on bread.. instead of their food. I hope the manager sees this because we ate tonight of July 22 and we got our appetizers maybe about 15 minutes later and then the table who ordered after us got their food first we waited 45 minutes for our food then a huge party came and waited a little bit longer for our food to come in because the server forgot and the manager didn't apologize to us till the very, very end that they're busy but the service here was really really bad. No one communicates with each other and the food was mediocre. I highly suggest making a reservation somewhere else. I made this reservation over six months ago, hoping but it really sucked. Really unique restaurant with so much history built on the ruins of the Theater of Pompey and generations of classic Roman dishes passed down. Hands down one of the most delicious dishes I've had in Italy was the delicate ricotta Tortello with saffron cream sauce guanciale and shaved truffles. Such a cool atmosphere and excellent service by multiple waitstaff. The antipasto was delicious, better than my pic does justice. Mussels and clans were also divine. Loved the grilled octopus, salad was meh. Meatballs, Fetuccini and Rigatoni were all delicious. Ristorante Pancrazio was a delight in every way we had hoped. Things I loved: 1) Our server! He was friendly and put up with my so very sad attempt at ordering in Italian. He was attentive yet allowed us space to enjoy the evening together (my husband and I, that is). 2) The food! It was perfect. We had prosciutto and melon. The melon was perfectly ripe and the prosciutto was tender and freshly cut (I've had it when it was a bit older and it gets dried out so that's why I think it was freshly cut - I probably don't know what I'm talking about here but the end idea is that it was delicious). i wandered into this restaurant while exploring the Campo area. I was seated at an outside table and pretty much ignored. Two other tables were seated and orders taken when I asked if I had a waiter. We actually were introduced to this place via a food tour that we were on and decided to come back for dinner on our last evening in Rome. We were seated on the ground-floor at a table in a little alcove to the right of the entrance. We were waited on almost immediately for our drinks. After we had a drinks for a few minutes, we ordered our dinners. The food came out within a reasonable amount of time and everyone's entree was nice and hot. I had the fillet with green beans and it was delicious! I don't recall what everyone else had, but I do recall everyone really enjoying the meal. Last night in the pouring rain we made our way to this interesting restaurant where we had dinned many years ago. The one dish I really wanted was one called "Straw and Hay" or "Paglia e Fieno," and I remember I had it there. We were the only ones in the restaurant at 7:00 PM. Antonio sat us in the back dining room. We started off with 2 Fried Artichokes (Carciofi alla "Giudia" ) - Jewish-style fried artichokes - oh my - they were beyond delicious and so crispy! The restaurant did have the Paglia e Fieno pasta which is green and yellow noodles with ham (prosciutto) and mushrooms. It was as good as I remember it. My husband had the Tournedos di Filetto alla Rossini. He asked for the filet to be cooked medium; however, it was really on the rarer side. It was served on top of a large piece of Italian bread in a delectable sauce and pate de fois. He also ordered a side of roasted potatoes. We enjoyed a bottle of Roccabella Dolcetto D'Alba. What is unusual about this restaurant is that it was built over the ruins of the 1st century BC Theater of Pompey (close to where Julius Caesar was infamously murdered). The Theater was the first permanent theater to be constructed of marble in ancient Rome. You get to dine among the Roman ruins. We had a delicious dinner in a beautiful setting. read more

One of the more interesting restaurants in Roma, Da Pancrazio,is located just off of Campo de Firori. Although we wanted to sit outside, the best part of the restaurant is on the lower floor. You will find yourself in the inside of a Roman Ruin. Their lower floor was part of the original Teatro de Pompeo (a huge theater complex where Julius Caesar was murdered). I've been to Da Pancrazio a few times now and it has become one of my standard spots when in Rome. I had lunch outside and others have commented accurately on the interior. Sitting outside just around the corner from the madness of the Piazza was a nice cool, quiet, space. The food is solid. Great carbonara, al'amatriciana. In season, the fried artichokes are to die for and the secondos stand up nicely to other restaurants nearby. Nice reasonably priced wine list. But what I enjoy most is watching the waiters work. Most have been with the restaurant for quite some time and they can be a bit curmudgeonly but they are so professional. It becomes so clear as I have my meal and I watch them work their tables.
