We found Daddy's Café while visiting our daughter at the University of Delaware, and this ended up being one of those meals that sets the bar for what a great brunch should be. From the moment we walked in, the place just felt right. Warm, welcoming, and unpretentious. Antonio, our server, was outstanding. Attentive, personable, and completely dialed in without ever being overbearing. He made the whole experience feel easy. The food was exceptional across the board. The chilaquiles were packed with flavor and clearly made fresh. Johnny's French toast was next level, rich, perfectly cooked, and easily one of the best I've had. The loaded pancakes were exactly what you want in a proper brunch, generous, indulgent, and done right. What really took it over the top was the unexpected moment. Completely unprompted, Antonio and Chef Francisco surprised me with a birthday celebration, fresh churros with a candle. It was thoughtful, personal, and genuine. You don't see that kind of care very often anymore. And then the kicker. The entire meal for the table came out to under $70. For the quality of food, portion size, and level of service, that kind of value is rare. Huge credit to Chef Francisco in the kitchen and Antonio on the floor. It was suggested that I try this place out because I'd been whining to my friends about a lack of real Mexican breakfast options here in East Jabip. I've been pining for real Mexican breakfast tacos since I left San Antonio. I decided to stop here on my way to the Delaware Blood Bank to make my usual whole blood donation. It wasn't busy for 8:30 am on a Monday. Maybe I missed the rush. Waitress was friendly and perked up when I mentioned San Antonio. I was so glad that I stopped in. Daddy's Kitchen or Cocina de Papa is a well disguised Mexican restaurant with a menu that is half American and half from South of the Border. Their focus is breakfast and lunch. The space isn't large, with room for about a dozen tables and a small rear dining room about half the size of the main room. We ordered a Breakfast Burrito and Daddy's Special Omelet, both with chorizo Mexican spicy sausage. With apparently only one cook, it was nearly 30 minutes to be served. During the wait the house filled for lunch. The ambient noise from conversation, kitchen, music system and stone walls became loud and beyond reasonable comfort level. It was really annoying. The food itself was okay, but nothing outrageous. Quantity offset its shortcomings to some extent, and while Daddy's O was zoftig with the home fries loaded within the egg cover and the rye toast a nice crisp balance to the savoriness of the chorizo, onion, pepper and melted queso, the burrito had exactly the same taste without the textural interplay. Maybe we should have seen it coming, but we didn't. It was underwhelming. We took half home not knowing if we would actually finish it. I made the 18 minute drive from Hockessin to have breakfast here since it is highly rated. Eager to try new things, I ordered banana pancakes, home fries and an biscuit. The service was friendly. The restaurant is unimpressive, though I like paintings for sale on the walls. Seriously. The pancakes had the cut up banana on top, not in the pancake. The pancakes were about a two out of five. They were a salty and fair. The home fries were salty too- about a 3.5/5. The biscuit was the best thing here- 4/5. If I go into a restaurant, I want the meal to be as good as my home cooking. I am an average cook. I could have made a better breakfast at home. Don't drive here from Hockessin. I rated the restaurant a 3. If the restaurant was in Philadelphia (Philadelphia has better food) I would have rated the place a 2. The hubby and I had a very nice brunch at Daddy's on Father's Day (very fitting restaurant name for the day, I thought!). The menu is a very nice mix of American and Mexican items... I loved the Daddy's Special Omelet (chorizo, bacon, chihuahua cheese and Pico) which came with some very good home fries and a biscuit (my choice). The old man had a Reuben and fries which were both cooked perfectly, and some really yummy mushroom soup (and I don't even like mushrooms!). What a gem! Excellent service and phenomenal food! Stumbled across this place on a road trip, almost in the middle of nowhere. Although the description says Breakfast and Brunch, they also have dinner and lunch items. We tried the chipped beef (best I've ever had) french toast (excellent) and the breakfast quesadilla (AMAZING). A lot of dishes with a Mexican twist which was fantastic and authentic. Love Daddy's Kitchen! We go at least once a week. Breakfast favorites are Greek, Farmer's or Daddy's Special omelets ...great french toast also. Lunch favorites are California chicken sandwich, mushroom soup, New York Reuben or, Santa Fe chicken salad. Dinner favorites are fajitas, meatloaf, country chicken, or any of the Mexican entrees. And don't pass up the daily specials, got fish tacos last week that were the best I've ever eaten . Don't forget the churros for dessert. Service is fantastic...we know the waitresses by name. I had the best mushroom omelet I've ever had- the mushrooms tasted like they were sautéed in butter separately before putting them in the omelet and there were tons of mushrooms! I actually liked my meal, but my wife did not love hers. I had the breakfast quesadilla and it was really tasty. Good coffee too. My wife had 2 over easy eggs, bacon, hash browns and English muffin... The eggs were runny. Not over easy, but truly runny. The bacon was undercooked. Not raw, just undercooked. And the hash browns just were scant - not many of them. I think I'd like to give them another shot. I really did like my meal. The meal was 22$. 2 breakfasts and 2 coffees. After hearing several folks say that Daddy's Kitchen was very good I finally stopped in for dinner. The restaurant is tastefully decorated and has nice atmosphere. It is a BYOB and they did not charge corkage. The food prices are very reasonable, the server was very nice and efficient. They have a variety of American, Italian, and Mexican foods on the menu. We both had Mexican and it was much better than the majority of Mexican dishes we have had in the area. The food was also beautifully presented. We would definitely order them again, though we will try some of the other menu items first. Daddy's is a real gem in sleepy Landenberg. read more
