We made our way to the Union from Capitol Square after dinner, taking Beanie (our kid's new mini dachshund) on a walk through State Street. The ice cream shop is located inside the Union, and had long lines surrounding the store. We got in the nearest line from the entrance, but soon noticed there was another line on the other side for folks who were walking from inside the historical building. We soon got in front, and chose a two scooper ($6) from the 16 available flavors. The student workers are encouraged to give out very generous scoops, so it turns out to be a good deal of ice cream. We've eaten Babcock ice cream many times (usually taking visitors to it when we lived in Madison), and it is good as ever. Very thick and creamy (never any ice crystals since they go through it so quickly), with unusual flavors and clever names. They intentionally don't distribute far outside of Madison. My wife and shared a Carmel Creek/Mocha Macchiato combo, thinking about the past. We took it back outside, and sat on the shores of Lake Mendota, eating our rapidly melting ice cream, listening to the live band on the Terrace, and enjoying each other's company. read more

This wonderful ice cream shop is located inside the Memorial Union on the campus of the University of Wisconsin. They have about 30 different flavors of ice cream and sell it by the scoop in a cup or on a cone. They also have sundaes and milkshakes. I had the Union Utopia flavor on a waffle cone, and it was delicious. My husband had a scoop of mocha macchiato and loved it, too. We saw the Daily Scoop and its insanely long line (for a Sunday evening...) so we decided this had to be the spot to be! It did not disappoint. The pricing was on point. Portion size was huge. Super delicious ice cream in a very unique location! We came on a weekend when it was quite busy, but the line moves quickly. My friend ordered the key lime pie ice cream, which was also very good (and even had little chunks of the graham cracker crust in it). It made things messy. It is true what they say; The messier the dish, the better but when I eat ice cream... the last thing I want to be is all sticky. This place is like most shops. Pick your cone or bowl. Choose your size. Pick your flavors. They have some typical flavors like vanilla, cookies and cream, and mint chocolate chip. They also have other flavors. But when I looked at the menu of the available flavors and I saw BLUE MOON....well, I was over the moon! My mouth watered and I was filled with a joyous rush of nostalgia! Blue Moon was my absolute favorite ice cream flavor growing up. I have not encountered it outside of Wisconsin (although, to be honest, I don't eat a great deal of ice cream any more....). I don't know what it is...apparently the flavor is actually vanilla and orange together, but colored blue. And I don't know how the color might affect the taste, but it doesn't just taste like a creamy orange....it just tastes wonderful! I was only going to to get a single scoop in a dish. But when it comes to Blue Moon ice cream....I am pretty proud of myself for stopping myself at two scoops. A little less willpower and I might have eaten the entire tub in their freezer! I'm pretty sure the Daily Scoop is half the reason I eventually ended up at UW-Madison. Between fourth and fifth grade I participated in College for Kids, and part of the routine was coming to the Union to get ice cream. The view of the terrace, that it's a locally made product (like not food miles but food feet practically), that the purchase supports the university, the reasonable prices ($3.20 for small), a variety of flavors not *too* crazy but not so "vanilla" as to be blasé, they are all reasons that contribute to this five star rating. Look for it inside the union in the first floor, with a stand outside near the doors weather permitting. Allow 15 minutes to stand in line, minimum during peak times. It's worth it! For example, someone I knew had three large scoops all at once one time, did not feel any discomfort from lactose intolerance. The staff were courteous and efficient. The store well organized. There were ice cream drips near the payment area, the staff there did not seem to notice. Would be great to pay attention on payment areas to ensure cleanness, which makes making payments easier. Two drawback is that you are not able to sample it as COVID restrictions is still on. Unlike some specialty ice cream stores, you are not able to get one scoop with 2-3 different flavors.
