I scream, you scream, for joy! This place has great selections, and some pretty tasty ones for those with allergy sensitivities. My husband cannot have dairy or gluten, and they were happily able to accommodate him with a gluten-free sugar cone and strawberry hibiscus sorbet. it is super delicious. Classics like Rocky Road are a delight. My kids always love getting what used to be called the Superman before. Apparently there was a cease-and-desist for using the name. It is now known as superhuman. The parking lot is shared with a lot of other businesses, so parking can be a little challenging at busy times of the day. Great spot to go with the fam or when you are craving something sweet and cold. They do sell some of their flavors in pints. Unfortunately, none of them are the dairy free options. I love Chocolate Shoppe ice cream! A great go-to spot on the westside. They have tons of fun flavors. They even offer vegan flavors. I love their Turtle and Heaps of Love flavors. This time I went with Turtle. My mom ordered the Strawberry Hibiscus Italian Ice and it was incredible. Perfect for a summer night, I will be ordering it next time! If you don't want to grab a scoop they also sell pints and other frozen desserts. Their shop is spacious with lots of indoor seating options as well as some outdoor seating. We enjoyed the outdoor seating. The staff was very friendly and moved through the line quickly. A great neighborhood location however the parking lot can be busy since there are many other businesses in the center. I went on a weekday evening after 8. The place still had some traffic, but not crazy. I got the street side parking. There were a good number of seats inside and outside. I went for a flight. this s$@! Just got serious was my favorite flavor. Zanzibar chocolate seems to be the favorite flavor in general. I took that as well. I liked it, but it was a bit too chocolatey for me. Banana cream pie and caramel chaos were my other flavors, and they were good as well. Ice cream was really rich and creamy. It's never too cold for ice cream in the winter even for takeout! Just eat it in your car with seat warmers fully on. I had the bourbon pecan pie ice cream and it wasn't too bad! You slightly taste the bourbon. Their small size is a generous portion. I could have shared it with my sister with just one scoop! We just wanted to try it and we were also full from our dinner. Ultra creamy, tons of toppings, mix ins and combinations to choose from. A little pricey but worth it. Our new go to. They also have dairy free, gluten free, ice cream cakes, and pints to go. They offer specialty milkshakes and sundaes, and a variety of waffle cones as well. They also have house made candy which I have yet to try. Definitely worth checking out. read more

The thing I love about the Chocolate Shoppe are the flavors! Every time I go (almost every two weeks), there's at least 5 different flavors compared to the last time. While the variety of flavors is really important to me, the ice cream itself and the waffle cones that hold up the goodness are also spectacular. Although you do not are able to step into the store and absorb all the sweet aromas, the service of ordering at one door and picking up on the other side made sense for now. The Blue Moon is vibrant in color and taste if you are a proponent of this Wisconsin heritage. One of the best versions I've had for sure. One of my mentors suggested that I try this place - in particular, the Zanzibar chocolate ice cream. I was expecting to order myself one of those with a waffle cone, and then I see that they had an ice cream flight. Good god, that's a fat boy's nightmare -and I went for it, of course. I was then asked for collateral for the tray that the ice cream came in - a paddle type device with 4 wells for ice cream. Small price to pay... sure. Got 4 flavors - the Zanzibar chocolate, the vanilla, the bourbon pecan pie, and the salted caramel. The chocolate was smooth and rich.. very chocolatey. Good sign. Then comes the vanilla - the acid test of ice cream... again, smooth and creamy, without that insecticide flavor from too much vanilla. The only complaint is a couple of slivers of ice crystal - but most of that ice cream was consistently smooth. Then come the bourbon pecan pie and salted caramel. The stronger flavors in both of them (bourbon and salted caramel) were noticeable but not overwhelming. The accenting ingredients (pecan in the bourbon pecan pie, chocolate chips in the salted caramel) gave a nice balance. Basic, non-hipster flavors of ice cream done well. Excellent job. I'll be back again when I'm back in Madison. read more

I had a positive experience, there was a huge line almost out the door. The line went super fast and decided to try the Blue Moon in a waffle cone. Blue Moon tastes like fruit loops/fruity pebbles. Leave it to an overrated Madison establishment to wreck the un-wreckable: gourmet ice cream! How?? Try this. Keep the freezers at about 32°-for hard ice cream! When I've asked the staff to convey the message to management (hard ice cream is supposed to be frozen, not gooey! lickable, not slurp-able!) the staff have on two occasions gone into excuse mode. I didn't ask for an explanation, just that the message be delivered. So I'm delivering it now. One thing I do have to say, the problem is consistent. The State Street location has this issue, as well. But I chalked that up to it being...State Street, where they can get away with mediocrity. I figured a neighborhood location would be better. But no. Not even in winter. Oh and judging from the Chocolate Shoppe's obnoxious graphic design (did they actually pay somebody to create the visual disaster that is their in-store signage?), I suppose the lack of care shouldn't be surprising. Take a pint home, their upright cases seem to be running on full power. Unlike their hand-scooped "ice" cream. Or just go to Michaels, for some frozen custard of a proper softness. read more

If you are looking for a fresh and tasty ice cream treat, there are no better locations than the Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream Co. My local location is on South Midvale at Tokay Blvd. It is usually clean and tidy. They have a special area of kids and is very family friendly. It always smells crazy good in the shop. There are many, MANY, many different flavors to pick from. They are inventive with the types of flavors they create and try to use local ingredients when possible. My treat of choice is usually a chocolate or Oreo flavored single scoop on a sugar cone. But a person can get so much more than a scoop or three of ice cream here. There are Floats, Shakes, and Malts. Sundaes, Splits, and add-ons galore. They carry fresh made fudge of many flavors and they import fun candy that tickles the imagination. The Chocolate Shoppe really does great promotion on their face book page. They will have fun events and specials at times. For the NCAA tournament, every team got assigned a flavor and the Championship team's flavor was given away on the day after the Championship game. Villanova won so Ultimate Oreo was given as a single cone or dish. One of my favorites! Thank you for the free dish of ice cream. I will be back when the weather warms up. read more

In addition to delicious full fat dairy ice cream, there's a selection of vegan ice creams, no sugar added products, sherberts, and Italian ices. Plus caffeinated ice cream (Bang!! product line). I am partial to the super premium flavors, which range from the excellent Ultimate Oreo, which actually tastes like a real Oreo, to zingy Honey Ginger. The ice cream is the real star, although one can also buy fudge, Jelly Beans, and other treats. Great to relax here on a warm day outside with a book from the nearby library. read more

No standout flavors from the two separate locations I've been to. Instead, skip on down to the Michoacana on Odana rd (there may be other locations). That is a Mexican ice cream shop with tons of flavors you will have never sampled before along with a huge array of popsicles (also of a wide variety). We like coming here for their soy ice cream. They have a nice variety for our son with dairy alleries. His favorite's are soy blue moon and soy oreo. There regular ice cream is also really tasty. I like the zoreo. Its their Zanzibar chocolate with oreos and marshmallow swirl. The salted caramel is also really good. A nice standby is the mint chocolate chip. They have a nice play place for kids that recently looks like its been cleaned up with newer toys. Before it looked a little messy and unkempt. The only reason they are not getting 5 stars is the prices are a little high and you can't mix flavors in their "single" size even though it's about 2 actual scoops of ice cream. You can mix flavors if you order a double but its a lot of ice cream and obviously more expensive. read more

The best ice cream around! This place is the reason that I haven't been able to lose those last 5lbs but it's more than a fair trade. It's great, it's unhealthy and everyone I know loves it. They change the flavors around quite a bit and the sherbet and yogurt varieties are great as well. The store itself is new, clean and comes equipped with bathrooms. Since it's located near a library, coffee shop, Whoops, a pet shop and, ironically, a 24-fitness gym so you're pretty much set. I bought a single cup of cookie dough ice cream with hot fudge. However, when I was served my dessert by a young lady, she insisted that no hot fudge had been added to the order. She was extremely rude and entirely off-putting. This is not the attitude of someone I would like to see serving desserts here, where I have been frequenting for many months. I want to love The Chocolate Shoppe--I really do. They're a Madison original, for sure. But they screwed up my son's birthday cake and initially declined to fix it. Then, when it was all over, I got one of the most juvenile comments I've ever received as a customer. Stuff happens; I get it. Everyone makes mistakes. But then they didn't take responsibility for it, and that's just weak. Without getting too deep into the details: I ordered the cake with an image on it, but shortly thereafter changed my mind and called, telling them I just wanted "happy birthday" on the cake. The person on the phone assured me this is no problem. About three hours before the party, I show up to a completely blank cake. I was alarmed, but I dealt with a friendly and responsible young woman named Madison. I showed Madison my cell phone record showing that I had called in plenty of time. Evidently, the information I provided wasn't relayed to the cake decorator. Madison took ownership of the problem. The decorator/manager declined to fix the problem, but Madison gave it another try and convinced her to come in and put "happy birthday" on the cake. Great, right? Mostly. I go back to pick up the cake and the teenager behind the counter is beyond surly. I politely asked if they could work with me on the price seeing as how they didn't deliver the decorated cake when promised even though they had all the information they needed. She stared at me icily and said, "That's not what happened. You never called us back." Never mind that The Chocolate Shoppe's own notes from my call saying "skip the image and just write "happy birthday on the cake" were hand-written on the receipt! As far as I can tell, the cake decorator never bothered to look at the new instructions. Whatever; it's thirty bucks. I paid. As I was starting to walk out, the kid behind the counter says, "Next time, just go to Dairy Queen!" Wow. Way to keep it classy, Chocolate Shoppe! Madison was great; the bratty kid behind the counter at pickup and the decorator/manager who couldn't be bothered to fix her own mistake were not so great. Again: I don't mind that they made a mistake; I've certainly made my share. But I do expect them to fix their mistakes and refrain from taunting customers as they walk out the door. read more

I came here drunk a couple of times on my Madison vacation and it was very yummy. After living out of state for a bit over a year, I can't emphasize how great it was to finally have real ice cream again! One of the best features about this particular place was unlimited samples, minimizes the risk of buyers remorse! They also make their own fudge (which you can also sample for free) and it was delicious! In the back there is a jelly bean kit, and they sell lots of different Candys (Harry potter themed chocolate frogs and Bernie blotts every flavored beans were my favorite). I ordered the chocate marshmallow and my fiancé mixed a couple different flavors, we both left full and happy. The tables were a bit dirty, but it looked like a big crowd was clearing out so we didn't hold it against them. We will be back! read more

The ice cream is a great consistency and there are so many creative flavors like cake batter fudge, zanziberry shortcake, and sh*t just got serious.
