An expensive treat but gorgeous sunset
    Inverleith F.

After seeing a movie at the theater I walked through the food court and spied a classic fast food stand in Dairy Queen. After shockingly see the prices I nonetheless got a dipped cone. While still classic with the crispy chocolate shell and creamy vanilla soft ice cream, it's really hard to justify $5.99 for a cone. This is nothing to do with the employees, it is what it is. They need to talk to corporate and get their help. They have competition right out their door which make it not easy. I would have loved an OJ too but not at over $6 for a small size. Regardless, this is a classic treat that everyone should have to buy a dipped cone and OJ and support the local owners.

The young man was very nice and muscular. He work so hard. I only see him on the floor he was very fast and efficient. Also have a great consumer service. Great job young man I hope you go far

Only thing missing is that Curly-Q at the top of my chocolate dipped cone!

There are a few things that you never forget as a kid, and for some reason the things that happen to you, can certainly stick in your head like forever...........like, 1. The first time you ever rode a tricycle, or a bike. 2. Going to your 1st prom. 3. Having your first kiss with a beautiful girl. 4. Buying my 1st car. 5. Going to your first interview, and getting your 1st job. 6. Or the time you had your first swig of booze, or your 1st puff of a cig! 7. Driving around town without a driver's license, or permit. And of course, remembering pops taking me to Dairy Queen to get that deeeeeeeeeelicious chocolate dipped cone!!! You know, the cone with the 3 bumps, & a curly-Q at the top? Ummmmmmmmmmmmm! Das what I'm talkin' about!!! While I was heading back to the Kona airport yesterday, nature was calling me cuz I drank too much water..........fortunate for me, I just happen to be not too far from a mall (being that I drove over 150 miles yesteday), & had to make a pit stop to unload the water. While I was using the facilities at this beautiful mall, I came across a DQ / Orange Julius inside a small food court at the Queens' MarketPlace. It was a hot day, so I thought.........."why not?" And I proceeded to order a Medium Chocolate dipped cone - ($4.68). What can I say about my dipped cone? Well, for one thing............I never remembered Dairy Queen to be having a small, medium, or large cone. I just remembered a cone is a cone, and it was just one size............ Also, I swear the chocolate coating on the dipped cone was much thicker in the past..........as when I got my cone, the chocolate coating was not too thick, and I would say it was no better than getting a McDonald's chocolate dipped cone. Only difference is when I go to McDonald's, it's way cheaper. Although I have fond memories in the past about Dairy Queen (as my pops use to take us there all the time).........it's not the same anymore for me, so that's probably why I hardly patronize any Dairy Queen anymore.

    A chocolate shake. Yeah right

That said, a couple of downsides took away from the experience. They're only open from 11am to 6:30pm, which feels pretty limited, especially when you're on vacation and trying to fit everything in. Also, be prepared for a wait. The line was wrapped around the corner, and there's only one cashier taking orders. After ordering, you have to move to the side and wait again -- it took about another 15 minutes to actually get our ice cream. Overall, great taste, but the long wait and limited hours make it a bit harder to justify.

My husband and I arrived early and beat the crowd, excited to enjoy another shave ice before the rush. We ordered two different flavors, and I chose the Pineapple Cream. It looked delicious when it was handed to me, but the excitement ended with the first bite. There was very little flavoring on the shave ice, and what syrup was there didn't even go all the way through. Most of it was plain ice with a decorative topping on top. After a few bites, I was left eating unflavored shave ice rather than the pineapple cream treat I ordered. The presentation was beautiful, but the flavor and quality were nowhere near my first experience. I know this place is capable of making excellent shave ice because my first visit was so memorable. Unfortunately, this time it felt rushed and inconsistent. I'm hoping this was just an off day, but it was definitely a letdown compared to the experience that made me want to come back.

There weren't a lot of options with flavors and there weren't many "deluxe" items either like sundaes and such. Would be nice to offer maybe halo-halo a regular menu item on Oahu's Dave's Ice Cream locations and some other specialty menu items since, after all, they're located at a Hilton. Customer service could use some improving. We went late one evening, about 15 minutes before closing and it was apparent that the employee just couldn't wait for her work night to be over. No greeting, no smile, didn't even ask what we wanted. I just told her my order and she gave me the total. That was that. Overall, if you want ice cream made in Hawaii and need a cool treat, but are OK with subpar service, Shaka Cones is it!

The bf got double with basic flavors of strawberry and vanilla in a cup. The portions are huge! We should have shared a single scoop or a double. All the flavors were great. Only the price but it's Hawaii and at a resort. After you get your ice cream, you can take a stroll and watch the dolphins.

Came here for an early dinner, and ordered the $24 11-inch Hawaiian Pizza, and the $16 chicken wrap. The Hawaiian pizza came with provolone cheese with toppings of bacon bits, ham and pineapple. The crust was too doughy, and bland. Not enough crispness, and almost no tomato sauce. They also shortchanged you on the meat and pineapple. Tropics Ale closest restaurant outside the village offers a $14 12-inch pepperoni pizza during happy hour 2-5pm. The chicken wrap was outstanding, with a tasteful blend of diced chicken, mayo, celery, and cranberry to give it some sweetness. So good that i ordered it again on a return visit. Second visit ordered the $18 18 oz mandarin chicken salad, and $18 18 oz cobb salad. Both came with salad dressing packets, and decent amount of salad additions to the cut up iceberg lettuce. You can get the same 18 oz salads at Island Gourmet in Queens Market for $12. 38 minute walk to Island Gourmet. The salads here do come in compostable packaging. Thinking of eating the salad before your plane takes off at the Kona airport? Laniakea restaurant at the airport sells 18 oz salads for $16. Cheapest food in Hilton Waikoloa Village is like saying cheapest food at Disneyland. They have a captive audience and price things accordingly. You know things are overpriced when they are more expensive than the airport restaurant.

We were only $20 short of reaching the $300 spending requirement for the free gifts, which should speak to how frequently we visited and how much money we spent at this store. Despite being repeat customers, every visit was met with the same poor customer service. All of the cashiers who helped us were rude, curt, and could not even acknowledge the smallest greetings. The customer service was so unpleasant that it was not worth the experience. The food is not amazing, the prices are not great, and the only thing this place has is convenience--nothing more to offer. In one instance, I got a burger and a black milk tea with boba. I specifically told the cashier that I wanted boba, but she did not ring it up. When I inquired about the missing boba, a young employee addressed the matter with the cashier. They talked, and I said that if it cost more, I could pay for it. She rang up the boba with zero acknowledgment of her mistake. Nothing came out of her mouth. Complete silence. In another instance, I asked a cashier what the gifts were if we reached $300 in purchases. She did not say a word. She simply reached for a card with images of the gifts and placed it on the opposite side of where I was standing. She said nothing. I asked if those were the gifts, and she said yes. She then pulled out her phone while I looked at the card, and I simply said, "Okay, thank you." These are just a few examples of the many disturbing encounters we had with all of the cashiers. While on vacation in a tourist area, this is not the type of conduct or customer service one expects to experience. It was disturbing, and we dreaded going there despite the convenience.

The best…read morecomparison I can think of is an old theme park that used to be the place to visit--now only a couple of the rides are running, yet admission still costs the same. Would I stay here again? Probably, depending on the circumstances. However, it wouldn't be my first choice. Biggest Issues: -Cleanliness Unfortunately, our room did not feel clean when we arrived. There were cobwebs hanging from the ceiling, a dead cockroach on the floor, dead moths, and noticeable dust buildup along the baseboards and behind the TV. I know some of the rooms have been renovated, but we weren't fortunate enough to receive one of those. - Resort Size & Getting Around This resort is huge, which can be either a positive or a negative depending on where you're staying. One of the biggest disappointments was that the canal boats were not operating. I found out they had been out of service for over a month for maintenance with no estimated reopening date. My kids would have absolutely loved riding them, so that was a letdown. The tram system also needs improvement. If you happen to miss one, expect to wait around 45 minutes for it to come back. It makes several stops across the property, and there really should be two trams running at all times. We had a heavy stroller, and lifting it onto the tram often felt like more work than simply walking. ** Choosing the Right Tower Matters We stayed in the Ocean Tower, which is the farthest from the lobby and most of the restaurants. The upside is that it's closest to the pool with the lazy river and smaller water slides. There's also a pool bar, a coffee shop with pastries and açaí bowls, a small gift shop, and laundry facilities (although every laundry rooms we checked was out of order). Even though we didn't pay for an ocean-view room, we could still see the ocean from our balcony, which was a nice surprise. If I stayed in this tower again, I'd request either a renovated room or a ground-floor room with direct access to Buddha's Point and the pool area. Even getting from our room to the nearby pool felt like a trek. The Palace Tower has the nicest appearance and reminds me of the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas. It's centrally located, so nothing is excessively far away. I also heard these rooms have been renovated, making it a good choice if having a nice room is your priority. That said, it's not particularly close to the main attractions besides the Italian restaurant, which is only open for dinner. Personally, I don't think I'd choose this tower. If I came back, I'd most likely stay in the Makai Tower. It's closest to the lagoon, the major pools, and several dining options, making it much easier to get around. It's still not directly next to everything, but there's an elevator that makes getting to the pools and restaurants much easier, especially for anyone using a stroller or wheelchair. Traveling with a stroller made this resort more challenging than I expected. While there are accessible routes, they're often indirect and time-consuming. For example, walking from our room to the Lagoon Grill took over 30 minutes. For families with young children or anyone with mobility limitations, that's something to seriously consider when choosing a room location. Dining Having multiple restaurants on-site was convenient, but the operating hours weren't. The three main restaurants--the fine dining restaurant, Italian restaurant, and Tap Room--only opened for dinner. The breakfast buffet was expensive, although there were less expensive plated breakfast options available until around 10:00 a.m. Between breakfast ending and dinner restaurants opening, it sometimes felt surprisingly difficult to find food late in the morning or early afternoon. The good news is there are several restaurants and shopping centers just a few minutes away, and the resort offers a paid shuttle service if you don't have a car. You could easily spend your entire vacation without leaving the property. Overall, we still had a good trip. The staff was consistently friendly and helpful, and there are definitely things to enjoy about this resort. However, it feels like a property that has enormous potential but could really benefit from better maintenance, improved transportation, and more attention to cleanliness. With a little extra care and investment, I think this resort could become a truly great destination again.
